The City Lights program engages local and national artists to create large-scale projection and multimedia installations and depicts the culture, history and lifestyle of Tropical North Queensland, transforming spaces into outdoor galleries of pictures, sound and light. Mix Tape has been developed collaboratively between AGB Events and artist Vanghoua Anthony Vue. The digital artwork re-

interprets Vue’s ‘tapeaffitis’, tape-based installations. The work reflects the artist’s experiences growing up in Cairns and the complexities of his HmongAustralian heritage, drawing on Vue’s experiences during cyclone seasons, the tropical surrounds, the do-it-yourself approach, the resilience of Vue’s parents and the push and pull of language, culture, identity and place.

AGB Events are specialists in creating public celebrations, innovative experiences and 3D artworks that are responsive to place, audiences, local stories and culture. This collaborative artwork adds a new dimension to Vanghoua Anthony Vue’s work, bringing it to life while sharing with a fresh audience. It will be running from 7pm to 11pm August 24 to September 2 at the Cairns City Library on Abbott Street.

Kimono-clad and wielding traditional drums, swords and noodles, will be featured as the Japanese Bon Dance Festival is presented by the Japanese Society of Cairns on September 2 at Fogarty Park. This event is reminiscent of the Bon Festival held annually in Japan as a celebration of family, especially ancestors. It is a folk art boasting a 500-year history and has long been associated with the Japanese summer. Originally, the dance was performed to amuse returning ancestral spirits and to send them back on their way. It also served as an important form of entertainment in rural communities where hard-working farming people who had little in the way of amusement would dance the night away. The Cairns event will include a range of delicious Japanese food, cultural performances and a communal Bon dance in which everyone can partake. The thrill of Bon dancing lies in joining the circle and dancing alongside the others. You can jump in and participate at any time, just follow the steps of the other dancers. Last year the event attracted more than 7,000 visitors. The festival runs from 2pm to 8pm.

Ten acrobats from award-winning contemporary circus ensemble Circa take audiences on a stirring journey of what it means to be human and how our bodies, our connections and our aspirations all form part of who we are. Presented in the intimate setting of Tank 3 at Tanks Arts Centre as part of 2018 Cairns Festival, Humans is a new show that sees acrobats explore the physical limits of their bodies as they are pushed to the extreme and question how much we can take as humans. How much weight can we carry? Who can we trust to support our load? They lead us to reflect on our lives, our loved ones, the burdens we carry and the physical and emotional strength it takes to overcome them. Created by Circa Artistic Director Yaron Lifschitz, the stage is stripped bare as the vulnerability of a team of highly skilled acrobats is exposed.

With incredible strength and integrity, they connect each moment seamlessly with the next in a thrilling and heart-stopping performance. Glimpse their humanity as they find redemptive power in strength and celebrate what it means to be fiercely human. Circa Contemporary Circus is one of the world’s leading performance companies. Since 2004, the Brisbane-based company have been touring the world, performing in 39 countries to over a million people. Circa is at the forefront of the new wave of contemporary Australian circus – pioneering how extreme physicality can create powerful and moving performances. Artistic Director Yaron Lifschitz has directed over 60 productions including mainstage theatre, physical theatre, large-scale events and opera.

In 1991 he graduated from the Directing course at National Institute of Dramatic Art (NIDA) in Sydney, Australia where he was the youngest director ever accepted into its prestigious graduate director’s course. He was founding Artistic Director of the Australian Museum’s Theatre Unit, Head Tutor in Directing at Australian Theatre for Young People and has been a regular guest tutor in directing at NIDA since 1995. In 2002 he was instrumental in founding the Circa Brisbane Training Centre. The two Humans shows will be held August 30-31 at Tanks 3 and the Tanks Art Centre. Doors open at 7pm and the show starts at 8pm. Tickets are $36.75 or $31.50 concession and are available at Ticketlink www.ticketlink. com.au

Jazz Under the Stars, an annual event presented by the Friends of the Botanic Gardens, featuring Cairns’ finest jazz musicians, will be held September 1st in the Cairns Botanic Gardens. Bring a picnic blanket, chair or rug and basket of delicious treats and join your host Harry Rivers as he guides you through the program that features Captain Jazz and the Bandicoots, Cairns Young Musicians, Fingerprint featuring Nikki Doll, Tom See Poy Band, Bernard Lee Long Trio, Di Queen and special guest artist Wilma Reading. Special guest Wilma Reading, who began her singing career in 1959 after singing for friends at a Brisbane jazz club, has performed on The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson, had a residency at New York City’s Copacabana nightclub and toured with Duke Ellington.

Additionally, she made numerous appearances on The Morecambe & Wise Show in 1973 and 1974. She has also performed with the national orchestras of Belgium, the Netherlands, Iceland and Germany and toured with the Moscow Symphony Orchestra. She appeared alongside Jim Brown in the film Pacific Inferno and in variety at The London Palladium and performed on BBC TV’s The Good Old Days. Host Harry Rivers was born in Pago Pago, American Samoa. His father and brothers were all musicians and at the age of 18 Harry moved to Australia with an all-Maori show band and worked the Sydney club circuit before embarking on a world-wide tour. He did gigs throughout Asia and then went to London and toured Europe. Eight years ago, he came to Cairns “for

a three-month break”. Like many others who came to Cairns for a holiday, Harry loved it so much he stayed. Cairns jazz band Captain Jazz & The Bandicoots, which has had an impressive 30 years in the jazz music industry, Cairns Young Musicians, Fingerprint, Tom See Pay Band, Bernard Lee Long Trio and Di Queen are all well-known and popular musicians who always draw an enthusiastic crowd. Gates for Jazz Under the Stars open at 4.30pm and the concert runs from 5.30-9.30pm. Tickets are available at the door (cash only) or can be booked through Trybooking. Admission is $15 and school children are admitted free.

A highlight of Festival Cairns’ 2018 program is the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, which will fill Munro Martin Parklands with the sounds of cinema during its Superheroes performance on Saturday, September 1. A full 60-piece orchestra will perform famous musical scores from such films as Superman, Harry Potter, Star Wars and Pirates of the Caribbean under the baton of conductor Guy Noble. The full orchestra has not performed in Cairns since 2015, and it will be the first time Queensland Symphony Orchestra has performed in spectacular Munro Martin Parklands. Sing and dance with popular children’s TV presenter Jay Laga’aia as he leads the Queensland Symphony Orchestra on a fun musical Superhero

adventure. There’ll be super-power sounds, Jay’s favourite songs and the full force of the orchestra. Wear your costume and get ready to join in. Jay has performed in a number of television shows including Water Rats, Street Legal, Home and Away and Playschool. He is well-known internationally for his role as Captain Typho in the films Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones and Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith. Also featured in the program at Munro Martin Parklands are two emotive works arranged by Cairns local Rubina Kimiia and performed by group Sounds of AustraNesia and soloist Edward Lampton. AustraNesia Music highlights artists of Australian Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Melanesian and Polynesian heritage. It was created to give a platform and voice to artists’ original

music from these regions in an effort to preserve the languages and maintain the use of traditional instruments as they tell our stories through contemporary song. The Queensland Symphony Orchestra is renowned for its high-quality performances of both classical and modern compositions that engage audiences of all musical tastes, interests and ages. This program is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. Gates open at 5pm with the showing starting at 7pm. Cost is $31.50 for adults, $15.75 concession, $77 for families and those under 12 are admitted free.

CAIRNS AFTER DARK

Cairns nightlife is unique and largely undiscovered. The tropics combine the weather and location to offer the residents of our magical city and visitors with an abundance of after dark pleasures. Whether your pleasures involve el fresco dinning on some of the best boardwalks and waterfrontages or relaxing with some friends over a beer or cocktail Cairns has it all. Perhaps the lure of the sea is beckoning? You can also enjoy a night dive on the majestic Barrier Reef that will leave lasting memories. Never felt the fight from a magnificent Red Emperor being brought up from the dark depths, well you can with night reef fishing charters leaving the Marina. Dinner cruises help you combine two pleasures to provide a memorable experience that places Cairns at the top of night

time entertainment. Picture the orange red sunset as you cruise out of the inlet bubbles in one hand and the other taking that picture that will be the envy of all your Insta followers. We have shows that will take your breath away or leave you hurting with laughter. Markets that are a melting pot of cultures and unique gifts. There’s speedway racing throwing dirt and that smell of racing fuel into the thick humid air amazing the kids with all the noise and colour. Nightclubs attracting every nationality and locals alike to come together in a celebration of music and arts. You can dance like no-one is looking or like everyone’s looking all night. We are so lucky to have all the elements aligned to create such a wonderful canvas for us to paint the town. Its cultural, exuberant, fresh and completely diverse. Its Cairns after dark.
