North Queensland Regional Home of the Year
For the second straight year in a row, Brendan Grant Homes has won the HIA Far North Queensland Home of the Year Award, but this year the win was even sweeter as the home went on to win HIA’s prestigious North Queensland Regional Home of the Year honour. The sensational house on acreage at Kewarra Beach, which was up against homes from Mackay and Townsville, is now a finalist in the national awards, which will be held in Perth next year. “Winning the Far North Queensland Home of the Year was excellent and then winning the North Queensland award was very special,” said Brendan Grant, owner of the locally owned and operated business. “To now be in the national finals is very exciting.” Words by Janie Barton | Photos by Red M Photography
The judges were impressed with so many features of the fivebedroom luxury home, which also won the Custom Built Home of the Year award, describing it as having excellence in design, creativity, functionality and contemporary décor.

A raised deck leads into large timber oversized pivot doors that create an impressive entry into the architect-designed home. A sunken lounge room and internal garden with floor-to-ceiling awning windows are seamlessly connected by bifold doors to large alfresco outdoor entertaining areas, an inground lap pool and spa and an outdoor sunken lounge area. The home also features a separate guest wing with its own bathroom and private balcony, state-of-the art kitchen and butler’s pantry, a playroom for children and separate living areas. It is filled with light, inviting in the sunshine through oversized windows and high-set louvres. High five-metre ceilings circulate gentle breezes and combined with a fresh white colour palette and leafy outlook creates a sense of space. The award-winning home is built on a leafy block framed by parkland and picturesque mountains and also includes a six-bay block and rendered shed, horse stable and a white timber-lined horse paddock.
The home is owned by Brendan and his wife and business partner Tracey, who have three young children. “We designed it around the acreage where you can see a lot of the property from the main area,” Brendan said. “We have chickens, ducks, sheep and a nice playground and places for the children to play while we can keep an eye on them. It was designed as a family home.” Brendan started in the building industry when he was 15 years old as an apprentice carpenter and learned everything about the industry before starting the multiple award-winning business 11 years ago. Together with their team, which consists of trusted contractors and skilled craftsmen they have worked with for years, they specialise in delivering high-quality and elegantly-designed custom-built homes of all sizes and within all budgets. “We work closely with our clients from the initial stage all the way through the building process to completion, so they know what’s

going on at all times,” Brendan said. “We believe every one of our clients is unique and that to truly satisfy them we must build a home that has been individually designed to meet their unique lifestyle expectations and requirements.
We’re passionate about partnering with our clients to create their dream home.” Brendan Grant Homes Ph: 0439 952 405 www.brendangranthomes.com.au
The award-winning Kewarra Beach home, which includes the business office, is indictive of Brendan and his team’s ability to build a unique home designed specifically for their clients. “We wanted to build something special where we could show people what we’re capable of,” Brendan said. “One thing about our building company is we always look outside the square. No job is too hard. “I think our secret to success is that we have a really good team of high-quality tradesmen and craftsmen. Every success we achieve is a total team effort.”

Renovation to Relaxation “When we first bought our house, Joe actually hated it – It didn’t always look like it does now. It used to be a brick bungalow with a bad 80s reno, but I had the vision of turning it into a Hamptonsstyle home. Thanks to Linea™ weatherboard, lots of patience, and some tears and laughter along the way, we got the forever home we dreamed of – somewhere our kids can always come back to.” Visit scyon.com.au for design ideas to help transform your customers’ homes.

ARTIZAN CABINETS are very pleased to have collected another three awards at the recent HIA Housing Kitchen & Bathroom Awards in Cairns. Showcasing their endless talent for design in all areas, the new awards cover new kitchen builds, an amazing kitchen renovation, and a very classy outdoor kitchen. Taking out the New Kitchen from $30,001$50,000 was a contemporary styled kitchen in a gorgeous new family home in the Gordonvale area. This was built in the home of one of
Cairns’ leading builders, and Artizan Cabinets are pleased to have had this kitchen on display recently. The Kitchen Renovation up to $25,000 category was collected for a very smart, functional kitchen in a beautifully renovated property near the city. Dream design team
Words by Janie Barton
We really like working closely with people to help them achieve their dream design.” Driscoll Carvey 3/111 Spence Street, Cairns Ph: 4031 3111 www.driscollcarvey.com.au
Designing a new home or renovating an existing one are exciting milestones in the life of a home, but they can be daunting processes. Luckily for Cairns’ residents, Driscoll Carvey Building Design make the entire process easy. Tony Driscoll and Lisa Mackee (nee Carvey), two of the leading building designers in Cairns, have extensive experience in all aspects of design, from small home renovations and extensions to designing stunning new homes that suit our tropical climate. They also go above and beyond for their clients. “We focus on making sure we give our clients one-off, personalised solutions and to make sure they have a really good set of documentation to make the process easy for them,” said Lisa, who also has a Diploma in Interior Design and offers clients that service as well. “If they need development approvals, we take care of that. We also take care of all the plans including structural, electrical and drainage plans and can assist with selecting a trusted builder, so we can offer our clients that one-stop solution.” Tony and Lisa, who are members of the Building Design Association of Queensland, joined forces in 2012. Previous to that, Tony ran his own design business for 24 years, with Lisa working
H o m e L i f e 21 M a g a z i n e
alongside him for eight years while studying Building Design externally at Central Queensland University. “We really like working closely with people to help them achieve their dream design,” said Lisa, who has recently married. “A lot of people have never built a house or renovated before, so it can be daunting for them. We work closely with other consultants and builders to make everything as easy as possible for our clients, so they get exactly what they want.” They offer an obligation-free meeting to discuss the project and budget before putting together a proposal which also includes any other costs that might be associated with the project, such as council application and structural engineer fees, so there are no surprises. Tony, who has a passion for designing new houses and renovations that suit the tropical climate and lifestyle, will be retiring in six months and handing the reigns over to Lisa and their up-andcoming designer Katrina Girling. “Tony and I have worked together so well over the years,” said Lisa. “I’m very excited for what the future holds as the business moves forward.”
It’s simple really - install solar and save money immediately. It’s smart, sustainable and the best way to future proof your home against high living costs. It has also never been more affordable. Replenishable Energy are the solar specialists. They work with clients to create customised solar solutions. “Solar is the smart option for home owners, and if you’re planning a new property, now’s the time to contact us,” said Amanda Sherriff from Replenishable Energy. “We specialise in quality solar systems, ensuring we maximise your power production potential.
If you choose solar, this time next year you can turn your air conditioning on all weekend and not worry about the electricity bill. Replenishable Energy 29 Hartley Street, Cairns Ph: 4031 2251 www.replenishableenergy.com.au
“If we’re involved from the beginning, we can provide advice on the best materials and orientation for your roof to maximise your solar power generation capabilities. The choices you make today can help save you big dollars down the track. “We take lots of factors into consideration when designing each of our solar solutions, including pitch, orientation and your current electricity consumption and future needs. Factors like landscaping and surrounding natural and built infrastructure can impact your solar capabilities. We liaise with builders and designers customising the best solution for your property.” Replenishable Energy is a locally owned and family operated business, with inhouse CEC Accredited Installers & Designers and has attained the status of Approved Solar Retailer with the Clean Energy Council, being accepted as signatory to the Code of Conduct which aims to lift standards among PV retailers in the solar PV industry.
They’re also proud to be the only Authorised LG Dealer in the region. LG diversified into solar in the 1980s, and today their fourth-generation solar panels benefit from years of research and development. They have highenergy production efficiency, stronger framing, lower long-term degradation, excellent corrosion protection, increased wind loading and superior low-light performance. Not to mention stylish good looks. LG also have the lowest cost solar panel with a 25-year product warranty, which is a full replacement warranty. Not that you’ll need it, as from March 2018 only 10 LG panels have ever needed to be replaced, from the 550,000 panels installed across Australia since 2011. Replenishable Energy is a member of the Australian Solar Council and Clean Energy Council and accredited Clean Energy Installers. They can design, create and install residential solar systems with battery storage or that are battery ready. Their systems have live monitoring, enabling you to take control of your power consumption. You have the option to incorporate a solar battery now or later and they can even advise on tariffs and rebates. If you choose solar, this time next year you can turn your air conditioning on all weekend and not worry about the electricity bill. People choosing not to install a solar system are going to continue to pay for their electricity indefinitely. There’s only one winner there, and it’s not the home owner.
