PUBLISHER’S NO TE

It’s a deceptively small four-letter word, but oh how much punch it can carry. Our home is our whole world when we’re kids, and when we grow up to be adults, we often unconsciously carry around that childhood home inside of us, even when it’s not the kind of home we want to recreate in our lives. Home isn’t just the place where we live though. Home is also a place where we are truly ourselves, where we let our guard, and our hair, down. Home is the place where we feel comfortable, and comforted. Where we’re safe and secure against the world out there. This issue of CairnsLife is dedicated to the people and businesses that help us create our homes and give us this sense of comfort and security.

Even when she sleeps, Nicole Bragg is thinking about real estate. Whether she’s getting the best price for a client or working to secure a quick sale, her focus never waivers. She is just as passionate now as when she started her career in the industry almost 10 years ago. “There was no real reason, the passion was just instinctive when it came to real estate,” she says. “And it still is today, I am constantly thinking about ways to improve and be better, to the point I think about it all the time. It makes me happy knowing I am improving and raising the bar in the industry. c o n t i n u e d o v e r. . .

What should you look for in an agent?

1

Ability to meet your actual requirements (not impose their own)

2 3

Clear interest in meeting your needs

Professional designation and membership of the local, state or national real estate institute

4

Positive word of mouth and references from previous clients

5

Knowledge of the area in which you’re selling your property

Knowledge of the price bracket you’re likely to sell in Commitment to frank, realistic dialogue about the market and your situation

Born and raised in Yungaburra, Nicole has always had strong family ties to North Queensland. And after travelling overseas for several years, Nicole and her husband Warren returned to Cairns and started their young family, Bella, 8, and Braith, 6. “I couldn’t think of a better place in the world to raise my children” Nicole says. Wanting to return to work after having her children, Nicole joined Betta Real Estate in 2009. She says it was difficult to find an agency that encouraged licensed agents to operate as independent contractors, while offering the support of an established real estate company. “ After 5 great years, my vision to develop and build my brand to my own personal taste has progressed and my dream to open my very own Boutique Real Estate Agency became real in June 2014. Offering a dynamic structure to reach unprecedented levels of excellence in industry I absolutely love has been a lifelong dream.” Nicole is known as an enthusiastic communicator and motivated salesperson, and has an evident passion for the local

area and its people. “The infectious excitement I get when I make people happy, I also get when I come up with a new idea,” she says. “I love thinking of new and innovative marketing, and developing and implementing those ideas.” Bragg Real Estate provides a standard of excellence in marketing and service that can be recognised against any sophisticated agency Australia wide. TAKING LIVING

Outdoors

When you live somewhere as beautiful as Tropical North Queensland, you want your home to embrace the great outdoors. Trips to the beach and rainforest walks are great, but wouldn’t it be nice to soak up the sun and fresh air in your own piece of paradise? That’s why Austart Homes has developed the new Hamilton 287. The home celebrates outdoor living, featuring a complete outdoor kitchen and expansive entertaining area, along with an inground swimming pool and outdoor bathroom facilities. As Austart Homes director Charmaine Matthews explains, it’s all about taking the inside, out.

“We’re no longer looking at huge houses and tiny patios,” she says. “We’re living differently now and people want homes that support an outdoor lifestyle.” Open-plan living spaces inside the home continue the natural, cool and airy feel, accentuated by large bi-fold doors. The Hamilton 287 features a combined kitchen, dining and family area, and separate butler’s pantry to hide the mess, the laundry tucked away behind the kitchen with its own courtyard, high raked ceilings and three bedrooms with dedicated lounge and office areas. The colour palette features light neutral tones to complement the cooling feel of the home.

19

Austart Homes is set to unveil the Hamilton 287 display home shortly after Easter at Castleton Entrance, Smithfield Village Estate. The home is specifically designed to suit a narrow block, making it a costeffective option for a wider range of budgets.

through Austart Homes Cairns, Port Douglas, Innisfail and Tablelands. “This is a very special home and it really delivers that wow factor,” says Charmaine.

Austart Homes is one of the most awarded builders in Cairns. In business for more than 45 years, the company director has built more than 3000 homes across Queensland and New South Wales. . Charmaine and husband Phillip are both directors and shareholders of Austart Homes Australia. They also own and run the franchise in the Cairns region.

“We’ve listened to what people want, and we feel this is it.”

Eclectic & UNIQUE By Michelle Dryburgh

The hot days and steamy nights of the Queensland tropics set the perfect scene for a touch of bohemian style. From Moroccan tiles and lighting to exotic furniture, mirrors and soft furnishings, Lantaka is a treasure trove of artistic décor, both eclectic and unique. Built on a deep love and fascination of ethnic and tribal art, ancient traditions, culture and craftsmanship, every piece at Lantaka has its own story to tell. “We currently have a beautiful range of traditional Moroccan baskets hand woven from date palm,” says owner Summer Spencer. “These beautiful baskets come in an array of sizes either in a natural weave or with colour highlights. Natural fibres are often the perfect choice in our tropical environment.” The Moroccan basket adds a distinct bohemian feel to any interior, while offering a unique storage solution. Lantaka will also be introducing a stunning

new range of Moroccan lanterns and pendant lighting this season. Summer says textiles will also be big, with a whole new range of block printed and hand stitched throws and Katha blankets arriving from Rajasthan, India. Also in the coming months will be the opening of Lantaka’s online store. The launch is just part of Lantaka’s growth following its first birthday in December. “We have had a very enjoyable first year, and it has been a pleasure to import and deliver unique and beautiful products, and hear such positive feedback from our many happy customers,” says Summer. “We have also learnt a great deal more about what our customers want and have started our second year of trade with this feedback in mind.” For anyone seeking ideas and inspiration for their own decorating projects, Summer and Nigel are available to help.

Lantaka

“We are not interior designers, however, we love our product and have plenty of vision and passion for how it might be used in the home,” explains Summer. “We can offer our ideas and advice, and online apps and Pinterest albums are also used as a tool. Here we might show a client how an in-store product can be styled into a space and mixed and matched with other themes, or furniture they might already own. “This enables the modern home decorator to actively participate creatively in their decorating projects.” Lantaka will be showcasing its exotic furniture and homewares at the Cairns Home Show in May.

Bring the colours of Morocco into your home In 3 easy steps

• Stick to neutral shades. Selecting a colour scheme that leaves you plenty of freedom to style with your chosen pieces will make your decorating process more enjoyable. Stick to a single feature wall if you feel the need to add a splash of colour or texture. • Fall in love with a statement piece. It is always a good idea to purchase a major statement piece first and style your room around it. This will ensure your space achieves a cohesive and harmonic look. • Reflect with a mirror. Mirrors are always an amazing option when space is an issue or knocking out a wall isn’t possible. A statement mirror positioned carefully can open up a space with the use of reflection. lantakacairns

PaintRight Cairns, The Paint Specialists celebrated the store relaunch on 6th March. Store owner Dwain Exner was overwhelmed with the fantastic attendance with nearly 100 people coming on the night. Both Matt & Tim Haymes from Haymes Paint were also there to help celebrate the relaunch and thank customers for their continued support. The store has been proudly servicing Cairns for almost 30 years, and like Haymes continue to remain a family business. The store revamp was necessary due to the growth of Haymes and the strong belief of continued success in the Cairns region. Whilst the store revamp looks amazing, not all changes have been aesthetic. There has also been significant capital investment in start-of-the-art equipment to support the growth into the future.

The delicious catering was a real hit. Thanks to the team from Taco Loco.

The key

to your protection

By Stacy Wong

Criminals target small and large businesses alike. It is essential to protect your business’ assets. When it comes to security consultation and installation, Troy Cummings Locksmith provides reliable security systems for your business. “You work hard to build all your business knowledge and information. You deserve a professional security system to Protect your assets,” says Troy Cummings.

If you feel vulnerable you normally are! Don’t be the victim. Protect your property now! What are the common mistakes that business owners make with regards to security? If they haven’t been broken into, or believe nothing has been taken as of yet, thinking “It be alright Mate.” They’re carefree until it happens. You know what it is like when you have all your cards stolen imagine your classified information or operating equipment. Advice do you have for small business owners: If they have mechanical locks make sure your locking devices deadlatching or deadlocking, And put all the locks on a restricted key system. You need a letter of authorisation with the signature, which is on the file and needs to match before a key can be cut. We also keep an electronic record of your system and can give you an update of how many keys you have out.

How can larger businesses protect their assets/property? It doesn’t need to be larger or small business depending on their budget. Just as with small business, a restricted key system with deadlatching or deadlocking locks can be installed. Surveillance Cameras and Alarm System are a must. Some Business owners seem to think Surveillance Systems are spying on their staff. But you have a record if something goes missing, or someone falls over, or if there has been a complaint from a customer their car has been damaged, or any little incident that happens – It is Proof instead of Suspicion. Advice for maintenance/upkeep of systems? Surveillance Cameras need to be cleaned and refocus half yearly or yearly. This ensures that when you need the evidence, it is the most accurate as possible. What’s new in security systems technologies? We have systems that tie all in the electronic Security to be accessible on the one app on your Smart Phone, Tablet or PC anywhere around the world. What are the Top Business Essentials you recommend? • Secure locks and Restricted Key systems • Surveillance Cameras • Alarm System • For bigger businesses: “Electronic Entry Control Systems”

Is it the right time to build your new home? Latest statistics around the volume of tourist traffic at the airport indicate that we are in for a bumper tourist season. We now have more direct international flights with increases in international passengers, domestic visitor’s numbers are at an all-time high and the Australian Dollar is expected to fall to 70c US by the end of this year. Australians are holidaying more within Australia as they become aware of the value and safety of domestic holiday destinations. This means we are back on the affordable list of holiday destinations and Cairns is near the top of that list. This also leads to destinations like Cairns becoming more popular for people and their families to live in, whether it be short term for work to cater for the

new projects or permanently for lifestyle changes. This will affect both building and property prices because at the end of such a great season we see building numbers increase. Like most things, when something is in demand the price will increase. In housing this is due to a number of different factors. It can be because building suppliers may have held back on price rises they have incurred because the market simply hasn’t been able to afford it in the past. For land it could be due to low sales volume so that when sales increase the developer can get a better return. For construction it may be that workers have not had a pay rise for some time and now it’s simply the right time to do so. Also this could mean having to import good labour from metropolitan

With all the different things happening around Cairns and the north recently; like announcements for so many new projects from residential to commercial both large and small; its having a very positive effect on the region. areas at a higher price to fill labour shortages. Existing house prices are increasing and the time it takes for an existing property to sell is decreasing. It is becoming a much more affordable option to build a new home that will have all the ‘mod cons’ as well as low maintenance, rather than purchasing an older home that is out of date and needs work done on it. Rental vacancies for houses are still very low and this is resulting in rent increasing. There needs to be supply more investment properties constructed for rental housing. People knowing this are already coming in to see us as they are aware prices will be going up and homes will take longer to build. We currently have good home and land packages at affordable prices.

Posh Lifestyle is a contemporary indoor/outdoor furniture design company importing quality products from around the world to enhance the look of commercial and residential properties at affordable prices. We specialise in the styling of display homes and resorts and are able to work with architects for any customised designs.

Building Homes NOT HOUSES By Michelle Dryburgh

They say it’s what’s on the inside that counts, and that’s especially true when it comes to building a new home. We all want a shiny new exterior, but the inside needs to be functional, practical, beautiful and complete. With Summers Homes, all the hard work is done for you, so you can enjoy your new home sooner. “What others call extras, we call standard,” says Summers Homes owner and director Greg Summers. “Our focus is on quality, from the front door to the back.” Summers Homes offers the convenience of preselected home designs and the flexibility to customise as well as renovations and extensions. Complete house and land packages are available in Mareeba, Yungaburra, Gordonvale and Edmonton, or homes can be built on previously bought land. “We are extremely flexible with our designs and we cater for budgets big and small,” says Greg. “You can either modify one of our designs or we will build your own custom design. Our aim is to deliver exactly what the client wants and meet their budget.” Importantly, Summers Homes come complete with everything a home needs. “Every Summers Home features quality floor tiling throughout, extending to the alfresco dining area and porch,” says Greg. “Stone benchtops are used throughout the home including the floating vanities

and laundry benchtops, and we use 900mm quality appliances like a gas cooktop, electric oven and canopy rangehood.” Summers Homes also feature Daikin air-conditioning, soft-close cabinetry, security screens, driveways and paths with a 1200mm-wide front entry door. Prospective home buyers can see the Summers Home difference in person when the new display home, The Maison, opens later this month. Located at Woodlock Drive, Edmonton, the Maison is a 257m2, four-bedroom home. It features a large alfresco area with access through stacker doors and is packed with clever and practical design functions. “We pride ourselves on outstanding personalised customer service,” says Greg.

“We are dedicated to our clients and to exceeding their expectations, while ensuring they have a Premium Living Experience.”

The stone benchtop

Specialists

At the heart of every home lies the kitchen. Whether you’re a master chef extraordinaire or sitting down to a bowl of cereal for dinner, the kitchen is often the central focus of any home. Now more than ever, people are looking for a space that is not only functional and practical, but beautiful too. The use of natural or reconstituted stone benchtops is a perfect solution, providing a hard-wearing surface and aesthetically pleasing exterior. And it needn’t stop at the kitchen. Stone benchtops are also a popular option for bathrooms, laundries, outdoor entertaining and barbecue areas. “Natural granite is a great fit for outdoors,” says Everest Stone director Ray Lamari. “More and more, people are taking their kitchens outside and want a quality product that looks good and is going to last.”

By Michelle Dryburgh

While it’s true good quality comes at a cost – stone benchtops can be more affordable than you think. Ray recommends people contact him or his friendly experienced staff Julie and Tali for a free, noobligation quote before making a decision. “A lot of people think they can’t afford stone and don’t even look into it, but if you’re not after a full slab bench, perhaps just a vanity or smaller bench space, we may have material on hand just perfect for you at a very affordable rate.” Established in 2004, Everest Stone boasts expertise and quality of workmanship, with an experienced team renowned for the finest results. “Our core team members have been together since Everest formed,” Ray says. Ray brought his background in building, timber and hardware to the table when taking over the business four years ago. Everest Stone is now a

34

preferred supplier for both commercial and residential customers, and demand is continuing to grow.

“Things are looking up for Cairns and there is no time like the present to renovate your home,” says Ray. “Premium quality stone benchtops will always guarantee a good return on investment.” The Everest Stone team specialises in manufacturing and installing natural stone benchtops, such as onyx,

marble and granite, as well as engineered, reconstituted stone. Examples of the available stone options can be viewed at Everest’s exclusive showroom, 7 Industrial Avenue, Stratford. “Some customers come to us knowing exactly what they want, while others can take advantage of guidance from our highly skilled team,” says Ray. “We ask questions to determine how it will be used, how often and of course what colour scheme you would like. “There’s also the option for us to work with you directly, or coordinate the build and installation with your cabinet maker.” Whether you’re building or renovating, contact Everest Stone for a free no obligation quote today.

It’s no secret that we do things a little differently in Far North Queensland. For this very reason, it is important to tap in to local expertise and knowledge when considering the design and construction of your home.

Affinity Designer Homes

Affinity Designer Homes has been building in Cairns for nearly 20 years and is somewhat of a quiet achiever in the design and construction industry to date, but as residential development continues to grow throughout Far North Queensland the ability to deliver custom designs with a local edge and most importantly up to date conceptual budgets, has been hard to find. It’s safe to say that the ‘Affinity’ secret to happy home building is to have all this under one roof. Roslyn Smith, manager and designer with Affinity Designer Homes said the market was going through a period of realisation. For that reason people consulted local building experts for personal interaction and tailored specialist knowledge of climate and customised building design. Roslyn said “At Affinity we build our clients’ homes with the tropical lifestyle and climate in mind, considering new and innovative building products, energy efficient housing requirements and best practice construction methods for our cyclonic region”

Building a new home is one of the biggest tasks you will undertake in a lifetime and is also potentially one of the most stressful. When you build with Affinity Designer Homes our aim is to make the building process as simple and trouble-free as possible. Design choices That Maximise By Bronte Skaines

In 2012, Andrew Thomas, Managing Director of Dixon Homes had a vision for creating an exclusive subdivision that would bring to the Cairns market a contemporary and minimalistic living solution that would suit the growing demand for lowmaintenance and easyliving housing. So when the opportunity to purchase the old Forest Gardens display building and surrounding land came along he knew he had found the perfect location. With an existing operational works permit for 11 new blocks already in place, Dixon Homes went about doing what they do best and designed a range of 11 two-storey architecturally designed homes, most with swimming pools, and beautiful outdoor living zones tailored to suit the needs of the Tropical North Queensland lifestyle. With only a few weeks left until completion, Lakeside Village has risen from the ground and Lago Street, Forest Gardens has become a landscape of

modern and stylish homes similar to those found on the Gold Coast and the big cities. What makes these homes unique to North Queensland however is the backdrop of the mature tropical trees and the beauty of Red Hill. “We have deliberately made design choices that maximise the size of the living spaces,” says Andrew. With each home having its own title and boasting a small landscaped garden with automatic irrigation system, they offer a lowmaintenance way of living similar to apartment living, but without the extra body corporate issues and costs. “Not everybody wants to spend their weekends mowing lawns so these homes offer a great alternative for those looking to get their weekends back but don’t want to live in a unit.” Whilst the external colours and design of each of the homes works in unison, the Dixon Homes team have designed each home to best suit its individual land size and shape and

41

have created a unique and contemporary internal colour scheme for each home. With three homes already sold, Andrew is excited that the project is near completion and is proud of his team’s achievement. The Lakeside homes are not only built and designed to meet a growing demand in the market, but are also in keeping with the Dixon Homes’ ethos of building homes that are practical, sustainable and energy efficient. During the project, the old Forest Gardens display building has also had a spruce and is now partly leased by Nicole Bragg Real Estate, Core Nutrition & Fitness and there is still 200m2 of commercial space available for lease.

“We would love to get a café in there….or a wine bar!” CairnsLife

This is particularly important forAlaine with the progression of MND symptoms which make just the simple movements increasingly difficult or impossible, but of course we still wanted a good hit ofStyle to boot. Pauline: With Pauline we wanted a complete change. This was the Day she has been waiting for. We Took off almost all the length. Pauline was having issues with curl and frizzyness and was battling every day. So off with it,Taper,Shape, invert and embrace the curl. Beautiful sheek 20’s inverted bob. Wow!

celebrates award-winning retailers An annual event running for over a decade, the Retailer of the Year awards are judged on several different criteria such as sales performance, customer focus, business and marketing strategy, merchandising and leadership, safety and sustainability. The overall winner of the 2014 major prize was Pandora, a locally owned franchise. Cairns Central Centre Manager, Christie-Lee Jackson said Pandora had been selected as the winner of the major award due to their exceptional all-round performance. “All the nominees are exceptional retailers who have been proactively driving their own businesses throughout the year. Pandora stood out as 2014’s best retailer by being outstanding on all levels, with a high level of growth, exceptional service, beautiful merchandising, consistent messaging and a strong marketing calendar. Pandora has a particularly

loyal customer base and this is a credit to the brand and their strategy hitting the mark.” Pandora Cairns Central which is locally owned and operated was the first Pandora Concept Store in Australia to open as a Franchise Store in 2009. The Family business began nearly 50 years ago when Ron and Diana Crowther opened Crowther’s Jewellers. Ron and Diana have since retired and have left the business in the hands of their daughter Peta and her incredibly committed and devoted team. Peta said “I attribute the ongoing success and growth of the Family Business to an incredible Sales Team, strong branding and a remarkable product.” Ms Jackson said other outstanding retailers were winners in the awards other categories. “The awards other categories are designed to recognise retailers who excel in particular areas, each making a great contribution to our customers’

family matters

The happy couple are blissfully in love, they are having the dream wedding and plan on living happily ever after. Long may that continue. However, for some the fairy-tale romance sadly comes to an end and the blissful beginning filled with rainbows and butterflies and sprinkled with fairy dust can end in a puddle of tears, regret, harsh words and arguments over asset division. More and more couples consider whether they should have an “insurance policy” to outline just how they should divide property on relationship break down and to avoid the stress of deciding how to “split the sheets” and have a civilised separation. It is possible. This is where you hear the term “prenup” being used. Prenup is the common term applied to a Financial Agreement, sometimes called a Binding Financial Agreement or BFA.

A BFA is used for the division of property commonly in 2 situations – before marriage a ‘pre-nup’ or after a relationship breaks down. The agreement does not have to be sanctioned by the court. Nor does it have to be just and equitable and can favour one party over the other.

and Sybilla Francis senior solicitor, a family law specialist accredited in the United Kingdom and now practising in Cairns, we offer this expertise and can assist you to make the decision on whether a BFA is the right solution for you.

Provided that the agreement is entered into freely, both parties provide full disclosure of their financial circumstances, and they both have the benefit of independent legal advice, a BFA is binding and enforceable. This area is complex and can be very expensive because of the detailed nature of such agreements required. It is not our practice to recommend a BFA for simple property division because of the complexities and costs involved. If you are considering a prenup/BFA, you will need expert advice on the intricate nature of such an arrangement. FINDING PROSTATE CANCER?

Dr.Daynes on the left and me on the right.

Y ES, We Scan!

There have been major advances in the detection of prostate cancer over the last few years. The most significant of these is the multi parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI). This can be done with a Three Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner and the use of specific software called ProCAD. This gives an overall picture with highly defined 3D colour images down to the molecular level1. These images provide information about aspects such as cell density, circulation and about the aggressiveness of possible prostate cancer. This compares with a conventional two dimensional MRI which is made in black and white where a tumour may be observed as a grey mark. Dr. Neil Gordon (Cairns Urology) and Dr. Kevin Daynes at Cairns Radiology have completed training in multiparametric MRI at RadboudUMC at Nijmegen in the Netherlands under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jelle Barentsz whose department leads the world in this field. They are members of the Prostate MR Centers of Excellence Network which include 10 other sites worldwide. Cairns is one of three sites in Australia and so can be considered at the forefront of prostate cancer diagnosis and management. In addition, Cairns will be the first site to have the Soteria Remote Controlled

Manipulator. This is a “robot” which is used to obtain extremely accurate biopsies of the prostate which must be carried out to find the exact type of cancer present. Multi-parametric MRI is particularly useful for those men with an elevated Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test who have had previous biopsies which have shown no sign of prostate cancer to define the prostate more accurately. This will improve their continued management significantly. Multi-parametric MRI requires the man to lie on his back for usually less than half an hour. It is not necessary to use probes in the rectum. If the “screening” MRI detects an area of suspected tumour, a biopsy will be required on a separate occasion. Only one or two biopsies are usually required with MRI. This compares with the previous 8-10 and sometimes up to 40 in some clinics being under general anaesthetic with a night in hospital! A lot of prostate cancers have been found to not threaten a man’s lifestyle or lifespan and are therefore not regarded as requiring major treatment but can continue to be monitored in case changes occur. Dinner Theatre Cairns Dinner Theatre is set to unveil it’s first interactive show on March 13th at The Cairns Hilton Hotel entitled “Tony N’ Tina’s Wedding.” A unique blend of conventional wedding festivities combined with interactive dinner theatre where the audience acts as the guests to this outrageous Italian wedding gone horribly wrong. In a market flooded with reef tours and nightclubs, owners Brooke & Wes Evans set out to give the locals and tourists an alternative to the typical dining experience by opening Cairns’ only interactive dinner theatre. “By

producing multiple shows throughout the year we hope to keep our audience coming back again and again, we’re already starting to plan our next two shows and will continue to look for local talent to fill those rolls.” Says owner Brooke Archer. Brooke & Wes have both come from an entertainment & hospitality background, Brooke has travelled the world dancing in multiple touring shows and on cruise ships while Wes has had experience producing & directing theatre Off Broadway in New York and Toronto Canada. The

couple met in 2010 while working onboard a cruise ship and have since settled back in Brooke’ home town of Cairns. The pair are excited to bring Cairns Dinner Theatre to life and to showcase the many talents of the local arts community. Cairns Dinner Theatre

Grand Opening March 13th!

No matter how wacky the wedding of your sibling, cousin, friend or coworker was, it still won’t hold a candle to the chaos of the Vitale/Nunzio nuptials. A unique blend of a conventional wedding ceremony and interactive dinner theatre, “Tony n’ Tina’s Wedding” is guaranteed to fill you up with good food, fun and, perhaps, even love.

457 Programme Visa

The curre nt 457 visa pro gram all o ws Aus tral ian e mpl oye rs to sponso r ove rse as worke rs in ce rtain skill e d occupations in the ir busin e ss. The visa is o n ly e ve r te mpo rary up to a m aximum of 4 ye ars.

The nominated occupation needs to be on the 457 occupations list and the sponsoring employer must meet training benchmarks, labour market testing, sponsorship obligations and other criteria to become an approved sponsor. 457 sponsors also have the obligation to pay market salary rates to their overseas workers. The 457 employee filling the position must have the skills, qualifications and an employment background which match those required for the position. Applicants must also meet English, health and character requirements and hold their own private health insurance. The Australian Government has just announced upcoming changes to the 457 visa programme. The changes include less onerous English language requirements for visa applicants. The current English requirement is a 5 in each band (reading, writing, listening, speaking) of the IELTS English test. The English level will be lowered to an IELTS average score of 5 overall with no less than a 4.5 score in any band and alternative tests to the IELTS are also to be announced. The current training benchmarks for employers will be replaced by an annual training fund contribution requirement based on each 457 visa holder sponsored with the contributions scaled according to the size of the business. Funds

raised from this contribution will go to Department of Industry which will then invest the funds towards training and support initiatives for Australians. Standard business sponsors will be approved for longer terms of five years for existing businesses and start up business sponsors for eighteen months. Australian employers complying with the sponsorship obligations will be rewarded by streamlined processing for their future nomination and visa applications. In addition the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) and the Australian Tax Office (ATO) have signed an agreement whereby the DIBP can request from the ATO salary compliance checks to ensure that employers are paying their overseas workers the correct wage and entitlements. It will also be made a criminal offence for any employer to accept a payment from visa applicants to be sponsored. Age limitations and the time a 457 visa holder spends working with the employer before transitioning to permanent residency are also being reviewed. At the time of writing the DIBP indicated most of the changes above in addition to other recommendations would occur within the next 6 months but some which require consultation with stakeholders may not come into force until 2016.

n a natural state canine life is simple and their emotional character remains balanced and consistent. Survival is the most crucial factor and their lives revolve around the daily activities of hunting, eating and sleeping. They enjoy social interaction within their group and maintain emotional stability throughout their lives. This lifestyle is moulded from birth and these animals develop a calm and resilient disposition that doesn’t require any medical treatment or behavioural consultation. It is impossible to completely understand their emotional capabilities and it is almost believable that they experience so many of the feelings that are common to our world. I have witnessed them in deep stages of grief and have also been privileged to share in the adoration they experience when producing young. Dogs are able to form strong emotional attachment to their owners, other dogs and a variety of other animals. They experience anxiety when confused or under stress and have been known to endure all of the intricate side effects of depression. They are the masters of courage when called to battle and yet they can be fearful and insecure when they feel threatened or overwhelmed. They display happiness when reunited with their owner or an established companion and can be easily overstimulated into a state of excitement. How much of these emotional displays are in fact common to the feelings we experience in our own lives? Domestic dogs appear to have inherited a myriad of emotional issues and insecurities that are not seen in their wild ancestors. It must be questioned that the number of dogs that are on prescribed medication

MENTION THIS AD TO RECEIVE

and are undertaking behavioural training is increasing and therefore are we simply conditioning our pets to be overanxious and unstable? I believe their lives are very simple and they do not want to be so entwined in the emotional roller- coaster of our human world. It is important that we educate ourselves to understand and recognise the natural state of mind of a well-balanced dog. Dogs are not human and so much of their behaviour can be contributed to confusion or the conditioned routine, response and reinforcement of their owner. It is unfair to over analyse their emotional response when we should be working towards having a clearer understanding of their behavioural requirements.

Love them, care for them and protect them but never forget THEY ARE A DOG.

We’ve all heard the statement ‘You are only as old as you feel’, take a positive approach and why not embrace this sentiment, by delving into any number of preventative health measures early in your mid years, rather than waiting until you start to see or feel the signs sneaking up on you. Look forward to enjoying the golden half of your innings, by being well and having fun to spend time doing the things you love. HE upcoming Masters of Jazz show at Tanks Arts Centre as part of the coveted Jazz Up North Series will be more than a little special. Aside from featuring seven leading jazz musicians – Bob Barnard, John Morrison, George Golla, Paul Furniss, Kevin Hunt, Jonathan Zwartz and Carol Ralph – the show will also act as a birthday celebration of sorts for revered jazz guitarist George Golla who turns 80 two days after the show. For George, the evening will be a chance for himself and his musical peers to play the music they love. “Much of [the music] comes from what is known as the Great American Songbook,” he says. “Songs that everyone knows and loves.” He encourages jazz and music lovers alike to attend the show. “If they like great music that will feed their souls, they should definitely buy a ticket,” he says. “Having us all on the one stage – it will be a very unique gig.”

rapport, we decided to do a duo album. The album celebrates the songs that tell a great story – that go past the standard 32 bars. We chose several older songs that have long forgotten verses. It’s been terrific to revisit these wonderful songs.” After several decades in the music industry, George still derives great inspiration from the music around him. “I get inspired listening to lots of different genres, including classical, Latin and also singers,” he says. “I absorb a lot of things just by listening. I hear a huge difference in my playing across the years. If I listen to a recording from 30 years ago I hear a massive difference in my approach compared to today.”

George started his career in the 1950s in Sydney after immigrating to Australia from Poland. He has had a long-term working musical partnership with Don Burrows and has toured the country frequently. His most recent recording project is with Jacki Cooper, titled Tea For Two, due for release later this year.

Reaching a milestone birthday like your 80th gives a chance to look back and remember the good times. There have been many highlights throughout George’s incredible career. “I’ve been fortunate to play with great musicians such as Gary Burton, Martin Taylor and Dizzy Gillespie, and Don Burrows and I were on the same bill with Oscar Peterson,” he says. “[It was] quite an experience to play with them in the flesh. Over the years I’ve really enjoyed playing with female vocalists and I’ve had several great singers in my ‘harem’, as my wife puts it. In particular, I truly enjoy the talents of Sharny Russell, Elizabeth Geyer and Jacki Cooper.”

“Jacki and her husband John Morrison invited me to be a guest on their last album, The Journey” says George. “The following year we performed at many festivls and jazz clubs around the country as a quartet or duo. I loved it so much and Jacki and I have such a great

ILARIA G

erman philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer had a theory about human relationships which he called ‘The Porcupine Dilemma’ which I’ve renamed ‘The Echidna Dilemma’ out of respect to our mammalian compatriot. ‘The Echidna Dilemma’ explores the parallels between the challenges of human intimacy and the Echidna’s on those long, cool dry-season nights. Like humans, Echidnas get cold and need to huddle together, not only because of the falling temperatures but also because they crave connection. However as a result of their proximity they prick each other with their spines and, ouch, it’s painful and to avoid the pain, they retreat from each other. All too soon the temptation to get close again proves irresistible, they lock spines and the dilemma repeats itself. This struggle between warmth and connection, and pain is all too apparent in human relationships as well. There is a need to be close, which is often followed by a need to be alone in an attempt at self- preservation.

The Echidna Dilemma

I’m facing ‘The Echidna Dilemma’ in my current relationship. We perform this curious dance - stepping, leaping and weaving to avoid the spikes but to indulge in the intimacy. If you cared to observe it, you would witness me gyrating between an ethereal, poised ballerina and a lurching, out of control Napoleon Dynamite. Regrettably I’ve been known to sprout spines at a moment’s notice and to execute some killer ‘spikes’. Once, I proceeded to give my boyfriend the silent treatment all the way from Palm Cove back to the city, even after he had kindly picked me up and bought me a bouquet of tulips. Double ouch! But everyone gets their retribution and I have endured a few very nasty ‘spikes’ myself. Whilst in the courting phase of my current relationship, my boyfriend took over 6 weeks to reply to a text message I had sent him (Note to self: Submit that figure to the Guinness Book of Records for consideration). Then

there was the time an ‘ex’ put a sizeable dint in the roof of my Suzuki Swift. Thank goodness it was road worthy! On the flipside, I have shown my significant other ‘warmth’ by sending him a care-package brimming over with goodies and pharmaceuticals because he had complained of a scratchy throat. Aaaaw! Human behaviour is a mystery and inconsistent to say the least. In order to transcend this condition, the temptation is great to create a solo inner world of warmth safe from the intrusions of the prickly behaviour of others. However, I find it much more preferable to seek out an Echidna who is willing to swap their sharp spines for a fur coat every winter.

Testimonial “I had heard wonderful things about Ochre Catering and I was impressed by their food at a couple of events that they had catered. So when it came time to secure a caterer for my wedding, I knew that I wanted Ochre. Obviously wanting to make sure there wasn’t anything better out there, I had sourced a few quotes and assistance from other companies. When it came down to it, the service and food offered by Ochre was definitely the best value of all of the places I had contacted. Carley was an absolute dream throughout the whole process, assisting me with the whole package I required due to our venue being The Sugar Wharf, Port Douglas. Nothing was too much hassle for Carley and when it poured with rain the day before my wedding and we had to change our game plan to an inside function, I knew I could trust Carley to handle it. I left everything in her capable hands and I could not have been happier. In fact, I was speechless at how she had transformed the venue. I had so much positive feedback after the wedding from our guests about how delicious the food was and how impressed everyone was with the service and the venue overall. I cannot thank Ochre Catering enough for the absolutely outstanding job they did for us. Carley and the team were all absolute gems and if I could do it all over again, they would be the definitely be the ones I would call upon.” Written by Tamara - Bride
