TAYLOR From Cairns
Hair, Make-Up & Photography By “As You Like It Hair & Beauty” With the Race season upon us and the Beautiful Sunny Winter Weather we have created a beautiful Summer Race wear look. Taylor needed some ideas with styling and how to create different looks. With Taylors hair we started by extending the length with temporary hairpieces for this occasion. We used 2 different coloured pieces to add a little interest and texture. With the added length we braided the hair in several different forms to create this unique & femine style. To finish we styled with our Custom Made Headwear.
TIP OF THE MONTH
With Taylors Make-Up we went for a classic Summer look, we evened out the skin tone, added a sun kissed look with our beautiful Mineral Powders. A hint of soft Pink Blush, extended and opened her beautiful eyes and to finish a hint of gloss to the lips to seal the deal.
With Winter here moisture will disappear in abundance, so re-hydrate your skin every Day, pop on a Hydrating Mask once a week & don’t forget your hands lips and Hair too. Re-hydration is essential for Body, Mind and for keeping your youthful glow.
Each winner will receive a gift pack valued at over $180!

At last, a Spiegeltent is on it’s way to Cairns! featuring... cabaret, song, dance and aerialists in two world class shows. The Herald Sun announced Jason Coleman’s Spiegelicious to be “the hit show of the Coast”.
Jason Coleman’s Spiegelicious and Animalastic Opens August 26, 2015, Spiegel Zelt by the Lagoon Eastern Events Lawn, The Esplanade, Cairns Last summer, Melbourne audiences were treated to two sell-out, phenomenally successful shows, Spiegelicious and Animalastic. Both shows are performed in a 96 year-old original Belgium Spiegeltent, known as the “Spiegel Zelt”. From their first performances, ticket sales took off, and in no time the whole season was sold out! Now it is Cairns’ turn when the Spiegel Zelt opens on the Eastern Events Lawn on August 26, 2015. For almost 100 years Spiegeltents (Dutch for mirror tents) have travelled through Europe and have been used as dance halls, bars and entertainment salons. These elaborate handmade timber and canvas structures resemble circus big tops and are adorned with velvet, brocade, stained glass and mirrors. Featuring a wooden floor encircled by glamorous booths, these structures are a delight to behold.
“tantalize, titillate and amaze!”
From August 26, 2015 Jason Coleman’s Spiegelicious is playing in Cairns at the Eastern Event Lawn, The Esplanade.
The Australian’s Chris Boyd described the show as “...polished and sophisticated.” Papabayj added that “Dancing that makes it look like Broadway in there... boundless energy from curtain up to curtain down... it’s a true gem... rustle up your friends and get down there while it lasts”.
“a true gem... rustle up your friends and get down there”
Jason Coleman’s Spiegelicious is an explosively charged show designed to tantalize, titillate and amaze! As a celebration of all things delicious, Spiegelicious is a humorous hybrid of world class cabaret, song, dance and circus. In two 35 minute acts, you’ll be amused, amazed and awestruck! Do not miss this Premiere Event in Cairns! During the day, the Spiegel Zelt will feature an all new children’s show – Animalastic. This unique purpose-built show has a distinctly human twist! It is an incredible opportunity to experience the wonders of the animal kingdom through the art of clever puppetry, state of the art costuming, and set to a funny and entertaining score! The journey commences in the quintessential Australian backyard. It is here that we meet our Hip-Hop based teen characters that lead us through this allsinging, all-dancing hilarious feast of wildlife. Witness the Fairy Penguins dancing, see the Rosellas flying, and even hear the roar of the Lions in this clever, all-human animal experience! Jason Coleman added, “By the time you and your kids leave, you may even speak WHAAAAAAALE!!!!!” Tickets* for Jason Coleman’s Spiegelicious and Animalastic are on sale now. Spiegelicious tickets start from $69.50 per person and Animalastic from only $34.50. There is also a great deal on the Animalastic Family Pass for only $99.00, which admits four. BY EMILY SHUMBORSKI Armstrong, Peggy Lee and Frank Sinatra. If her musical leanings aren’t indication enough, Monica has a great affinity for New York. Her love of the city will shine at her show at Tanks. “This show I’m singing songs from my New York repertoire,” she says. “It’s a varied show, that I have been working on for a couple of years: ever since I wrote my second cook book A Bite of The Big Apple”. This is Monica’s first time performing as a part of the Jazz Up North Series at the Tanks Arts Centre but she has been performing in North Queensland for over 25 years. One of her first experiences in Cairns was back in 1986 when she performed with her brother, Ignatius Jones in Pardon Me Boys. A highlight for her return to the tropics is a personal connection. “My brother Luis is a long term Cairns resident so I’m really looking forward to performing in his town and spending some time with him,” she says. Her diverse background means audiences should expect the unexpected, Monica says she’s always got a trick up her sleeve: “I think good entertainment should have an element of surprise,” she says. Monica Trapaga will perform at Tanks Arts Centre on Friday 18 September. Tickets are available through Ticketlink. For more information, please visit www. tanksartscentre.com

ong before Monica Trapaga was one of the beloved presenters of ABC’s Play School, she was a fixture of the Australian music scene: performing with her brother Ignatius Jones in Pardon Me Boys, fronting the swing band Monica and the Moochers, and performing as a solo act. Now, Monica is coming to Tanks Arts Centre as a part of the highly acclaimed Jazz Up North Series this September. Jazz novices and lovers can find common ground in Monica’s music. Her musical career is a testament to her vast appreciation for music and jazz subgenres. Pardon Me Boys was her professional debut to the jazz world. The band was informed by the swing jazz cabarets of the 1940’s but with a bad boy spin. Monica got hooked on the fast paced jazz lifestyle as the femme fatale for Pardon Me Boys. Her love of jazz and the Australian music scene encouraged her to further her career as a jazz performer. The band let Monica begin crafting herself as an all-around Jazz entertainer and gave her the oomph to foray further into the world of jazz. “I love to work with real swingers and musicians that I’ve known for years and who treat every gig with respect and a good sense of humour,” she says. Following her time with Pardon Me Boys, Monica found her stride in Monica and the Moochers where she released two ARIA nominated jazz albums. The band celebrated jazz greats: Ella Fitzgerald, Louis

Courageous. Brave. Powerful.
A
ll are words that denote strength, and translate from the Latin Fortis.
Harnessing that strength and aspiring to soar above the rest is Fortis Group, a multi disciplined firm incorporating business and consultancy with accounting and taxation services. Headed by powerhouse duo Elmarie Gebler and Graham Caldwell, Fortis Group is positioned at the forefront of the business community in Cairns. Originally from South Africa, Elmarie has called Cairns home for the past twenty years. With a background in Commerce and Organizational Psychology, Elmarie created Fortis One, a business advisory and consulting firm, in 2009. Utilizing her significant international experience gained from her time in both South Africa and the United States, Elmarie drives the idea that business growth doesn’t necessarily come through numbers. It comes through people. “Although I can rely on the numbers, because the numbers are a really good measurement, my focus has been on growing capacity within organizations,” says Elmarie.
40
According to Graham, who joined Fortis in 2010, it is Elmarie’s strength of never letting things stop moving that has added an interesting dimension to the business. “There is no such thing as inaction,” says Graham. “Even if the action is wrong, you keep going until you know it’s wrong, then you change and take another action.” Queensland born and bred and with a background in both Law and Business, Graham hails from corporate financial group WHK and Hall Chadwick. After selling his partnership in the firm in 2006 and transitioning Hall Chadwick through the subsequent management change and the Global Financial Crisis, Graham now leads the finance team of Fortis Group. “My focus has been predominantly in the area of finance and that links into things like taxation and accounting, but it also links into things like raising capital for clients, setting up structures for clients and transactional type work,” says Graham. Trusting in each other’s area of expertise, formed from a longstanding business relationship, has been key to the success of Fortis.

BUSINESS PROFILE
“You have to decide what it is you want. It’s your business, by your design”.
BY MICHELLE STACPOOLE
In 2013 Fortis One continued to strengthen their business with the purchase of an accountancy firm and the Fortis Group was formed.
According to Elmarie, working closely with a client at both a strategic and hands on level is paramount to creating a deep engagement.
Trading as Fortis Numbers, the tax and compliance area of the firm works alongside the business and consultancy arm to provide a more streamlined service experience for clients.
With clients from local business operating in FNQ and beyond, the Not-ForProfit Sector and corporate heavy weights, engaging the services of Fortis Group to go from initial concept through to possible listing on the Stock Exchange, Elmarie and Graham certainly have their fingers on the pulse and an eye firmly focused on the future.
This in depth focus on client needs also enabled Elmarie and Graham to recognize that their business model was not yet complete. “When people come to us and say “I’m going to start this business”, I’m going to say, “Well what’s your exit strategy?”” explains Elmarie. “It’s really important for us to understand that when clients go into something, their exit strategy is understood. We then realized that there was a gap in the market for our business model to go into the brokerage of businesses.”
So what advice does this dynamic duo have for new businesses starting out in Cairns today? “The trick is to be true to yourself,” says Graham. “You have to decide what it is you want. It’s your business, by your design”.
Fortis joined with national brokerage group Supertrac and, trading as Supertrac Fortis, now have the ability to take a business from initial concept stage through to facilitating the end sale. “It’s a natural organic direction for what our clients are asking for,” says Graham.

Late last year, I touched down at Cairns Airport, in a pair of unforgiving denim ‘daisy dukes’ bursting at the seams, a white tank top with more than just a hint of ‘arm-pit vagina’ and tired, uneven skin that would have made a perfect ‘before’ shot. Furthermore I was waddling in an attempt to avoid chafing. I mean I had just arrived from the capital of indulgence, Darwin and I was dressed for comfort not for speed! Despite the challenges of my flesh, I managed to more or less adroitly throw myself into the nearest cab. En route to my destination I noticed a vast number of people exercising on The Nard, the Esplanade for you out-of-towners. These gorgeous superhuman creatures were happily jogging, cycling and performing squats and push ups at various work-out stations scattered about the Parklands. “Is there a Triathlon this weekend?” I asked the cab driver. “No”, he scoffed “Welcome to the home of fitness!” He then proceeded to inform me that each evening on completion of his 12 hour shift at midnight, he ‘hits up’ the 24 hour gym for a 2-hour workout! I should have been in awe of the cabbie’s commitment but instead I felt more than a little conspicuous and very intimidated by his success. How on earth could I keep up with a fit lifestyle like this,
I thought? Up in the Territory I had kept my exercise regime simple and mercifully short. By short and simple, I mean a slow canter along the beach, at most twice a week. I had no intention of seriously exerting myself, especially not raising my heart rate above 90bpm and, what’s more, Oreo McFlurrys had become a staple in my diet and I simply didn’t want to abandon their saccharine, velvety goodness. Fast forward 6 months and I’ve lost 8kgs, I’m no longer afraid of the Blue Arrow and I now understand what a dead-lift entails. I guess, at least in part, I can thank myself for getting off the couch but on the whole I owe it to ‘FNQ’s Fit Effect’. Let me explain: Far North Queensland offers spectacular tropical landscapes that inspire both visitors and residents to venture outdoors and to enjoy the surroundings. For this very reason, FNQ is the perfect backdrop for many large-scale sporting events such as the Cairns Airport Adventure Festival, featuring the agonizing IRONMAN Cairns Event – FYI the leg run is a mere 42.2 km! – as well as the Cardiac Challenge, in which participants cycle the 330 km from Cooktown to Cairns. In fact it’s almost impossible to live here without coming into contact with someone who is either training for a marathon or has signed up for a 6, 12 or 16
week fitness challenge. And on a clear day, if you position yourself close to the Lagoon you may be fortunate enough to witness a rectus abdominis phenomenon, the ‘eight pack’. To provide further perspective, ‘FNQ’s Fit Effect’ is the antithesis of the ‘Heathrow Injection Syndrome’. You know what I mean: Your mates rock up in the UK and before you know it, they begin to up-load their happy snaps to FB. At first you think that somebody has hacked into their accounts but then you realize that their erstwhile tanned, toned and chiselled bods have been transformed into beer guts, chunky chins and muffin-tops. Why? Well, they’re embraced the UK’s specialty combo of beer, fish ‘n chips and, due to the disgusting climate, a predominantly indoor lifestyle. Bite the bullet, if nothing else, and embrace ‘FNQ’s Fit Effect’. At the very least it will give you a fighting chance in reclaiming your waistline after your next fat-drenched holiday to the Old Dart!

NEW ZEALAND CITIZENS IN AUSTRALIA Many New Zealand Citizens present here in Australia are unaware of their Australian immigration status. On arrival in Australia, most New Zealanders are automatically granted a Special Category Visa (SCV). This visa is a temporary visa which allows the holder to remain and work in Australia indefinitely for as long as they remain a New Zealand Citizen. After arrival at an airport in Australia New Zealand Citizens simply present their New Zealand passport for immigration clearance and they are considered to have applied for the Special Category Visa (SCV). Subject to health and character considerations they automatically receive the SCV which is recorded electronically, the only evidence of the SCV is the entry stamp in their passport. It is not necessary for a New Zealand Citizen to become an Australian permanent resident as the Special Category Visa allows for an
indefinite stay with full work rights. On 26th February 2001 however, in conjunction with a new bilateral social security arrangement between Australia and New Zealand, changes were made regarding New Zealand Citizens in Australia. It was announced that any New Zealand Citizen who arrived after 26th February 2001 will need to apply for permanent residency if they wish to access certain Australian social security payments, obtain Australian Citizenship or sponsor family members into Australia for permanent residence. Under transitional provisions these changes do not affect New Zealand Citizens who were in Australia on the 26th February 2001 as SCV holders or who were absent on this date but spent twelve months in Australia in the 2 years
prior to that date. If you are a New Zealand Citizen who was in Australia on these dates then you are eligible to apply directly for Australian Citizenship, may access certain social security payments and may sponsor family members for permanent residence to Australia. If you are a New Zealand Citizen who arrived in Australia on or after 27th February 2001 and you intend to apply for Australian Citizenship, access certain social security payments or sponsor family members to Australia for permanent residence then you will need to apply for and have a permanent residency visa granted first. There are various permanent residency visa options that may be able and you can seek advice from a registered migration agent to discuss your visa options.

Starting and growing your own business has to be one of the greatest personal and professional growth experiences a person can have. When I started my coaching business 3 years ago, I was not the person I am today. I have grown and changed in a way I never could have foreseen. I am so full of admiration for anyone who has a successful business; I now know personally what it takes. There are many hurdles to jump over and as you grow, the higher the hurdles get. There are sacrifices to make and lots of times when things don’t work out. At times you can feel like you’re failing and sometimes you plain just feel like giving up! The major thing I have learned while I have been building my business is that mindset is paramount. It is essential that you learn to look at things in a way that will benefit you and your business.
at the choices you make and what you can do differently. • Become solutions focused. You will never solve a problem by continuing to focus on the problem. Only focus on the things that you can control and influence. Focus on the solution and ask yourself what you can do to change the situation. • Always keep your eye on the end goal and celebrate your wins. Stay focused on what you want to achieve, no matter what is happening at the time. Stop beating yourself up for what you haven’t done and acknowledge yourself for everything you have achieved, regularly celebrate.
And, this doesn’t just apply to having a successful business; it applies to achieving success in anything. It’s incredibly important to look at each situation that presents itself in a way that will help you move forward, not in a way that will hold you back:
Your success is totally up to you. There are external influences for sure, but that doesn’t mean that you can’t achieve what you want. What it does mean is that when you focus your mind to doing whatever it takes no matter what, you will eventually reach your end goal. When you do this, the amount of confidence, empowerment and achievement you will experience will astound you.
• Learn to take responsibility all the time. Blame on the economy, the city or other people, isn’t going to change things. The only way to change things is by looking
Make a total commitment to doing whatever it takes to achieve what you want, develop your mindset and never ever give up on your dreams!

My desire is to help people manage their lives better by exploring with them the resources and qualities they already possess, and if necessary help them develop new skills to overcome the difficulties that face most of us at some stage in our lives. This includes anxiety and depression, addictions, grief, trauma, marriage and family issues. As a therapist I look at the past and present to uncover hurt, trauma and damage and using cognitive behaviour, experiential, insight and systemic therapy models introduce tools to help my clients facilitate the change they need to have happy fulfilling lives. My focus is on providing a safe environment where people can explore. Building the therapy relationship between myself and the client is paramount and needs to be established first before any tools will be employed. I have learned to be flexible in my approach and have counselled both men and women, teenagers, families, couples, indigenous and people from other cultures. I believe in order for therapy to be effective the therapist must understand the client, the client’s extended family including their original family, their culture and their beliefs in order for them to be empathetic and adapt the therapy to every individual’s needs.

Cairns Women’s Imaging opened its doors on 7 October 2010. The clinic, now located at 121 Sheridan Street, is easily recognisable with its signature big pink ribbon on the building. Cairns Women’s Imaging is a privately run clinic with Dr Kevin Daynes as its senior specialist. Cairns Women’s Imaging offers a full range of x-ray services for women including ultrasounds for obstetrics and gynaecology, breast health services and bone mineral densitometry (to detect osteoporosis).
Obstetrics & Gynaecology Cairns Women’s Imaging provides obstetric or pregnancy ultrasounds (such as dating scans, Nuchal Translucency and Morphology studies) in a comforting environment. Staff are highly specialized and strive to make the experience memorable. ‘Our machines have 3D & 4D capacity giving better results to diagnose effectively and patients will be able to see the scan ‘live’ on their exam room TV monitor,’ says Dr Daynes . Ultrasound images of your baby are also available on USB.Ultrasounds for gynaecology examinations are also provided to meet the needs of each patient.
Breast Clinic ‘Our breast clinic is like no other in the area. You can have your mammogram, tomosynthesis, ultrasound, MRI and biopsy (if needed) the same day and our radiologist will speak to you before you leave should there be any area of concern,’ says Robin Gordon, CEO Cairns Women’s Imaging. ‘It’s a comprehensive same day service so patients don’t have to agonise in waiting days, sometimes weeks to find out about their results,’ says Dr Daynes. There is also a separate waiting area for breast patients that is soft and inviting to help
create a degree of comfort during a time which is uncomfortable for most. Breast health services include risk assessment, detection, education and screening. State of the art equipment is used to complete diagnostic procedures of mammography, breast ultrasound, MRI and biopsy. This includes 3D Mammography (Tomosynthesis), a revolutionary screening tool for early detection of breast cancer. ‘Our advanced technology is coupled with our highly qualified staff, each expertly trained in their area of specialty,’ says Robin. Nurse Navigator services are also available to help patients deal with the emotional stressors of breast cancer. The clinic also works as a multidisciplinary team holding weekly meetings with Breast Surgeons, Medical Oncologists, Breast Physicians and Nursing staff to review patient care. ‘Cairns Women’s Imaging is committed to offering the best services in town,’ says Robin. So when you need a ‘baby scan’, bone density or breast imaging of any kind think Cairns Women’s Imaging. All referral forms are accepted. Phone 4042 6888 for an appointment.
BE YOUR OWN BREAST CARE ADVOCATE When you need a mammogram, breast ultrasound and or breast biopsy, take care in choosing the radiology clinic that’s right for you. At Cairns Women’s Imaging, we aim to provide every woman with the best possible care and help in dealing with being breast aware. It’s your life. It’s your choice. LOSE WEIGHT? To lose weight you must create a calorie deficit between what you consume (eat and drink) in a day and the amount of energy you expend (calories burned through basic daily activities and any additional exercise) in a day. Of course many people will go on a ‘diet’ to achieve the deficit and then adding exercise increases the deficit and [hopefully] increases the weight loss. This is not always the case since there are many variables and not everyone can simply increase exercise to achieve a greater weight loss, but that’s a whole other article. So, how much exercise is needed to lose weight? In my personal opinion the ideal (and it varies between people such as total beginner and more advanced) amount is 120 - 300 minutes per week. Yes I said minutes and not sessions. Your accumulated activity over the course of a week will have more of a weight loss effect than a set number of structured exercise sessions, even though structured sessions or classes are great.
By this I mean 120 - 300 minutes broken down into short, medium or long duration will send a consistent signal to your body that you are serious about weight loss. It will also make it easier to achieve the weekly total by allowing you the option to perform shorter sessions at times when you are busy.
just make up the minutes on another day and you can do as short or as long a session as you like. If you prefer sessions and not minutes then aim for at least 4 days out of 7 since any less is less than 50% of the week and not enough stimulus (unless you’re doing 3 x 2 hour sessions but I doubt it :)).
Say you can’t make the gym for a 45 minute or 1 hour class but you can go for a 20 minute powerwalk, then the powerwalk is a great idea and will add to your weekly total. The added benefit here is that you will not be as frustrated for missing a session.
Cheers,
Bottom line is the more minutes you can accumulate the better and exercise does not have to be a set and structured session, it can be any physical activity at all. Each time you are active you give your own metabolism a boost and send a weight loss signal to your body. So, I’d suggest you set a target of 120 150 (beginners) and 300 minutes or more (intermediate/advanced) and aim to hit that over a 7 day period. The beauty of this strategy is that missing a day is no big deal,

Scanned Alive Prostate MR Center of Excellence
multi parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) With the advent of multi-parametric Magnetic Resonance Imaging (mpMRI) the ability to find prostate cancer early is significantly increased. The likelihood is that with early diagnosis there is a greater chance that the man will not suffer from prostate cancer. The “multi-Parameters” are as follows: The multi parametric MRI scanner has the ability to define the anatomy of the prostate and therefore show the distortion of the normal tissues as shown in the first image (picture 1). Diffusion Weighted Imaging or DWI is a method of measuring the movement of protons which are particles smaller than atoms as they move through water in the body. In cases of cancer there can be different patterns of movement which can be shown in picture 2. The cancer appears like a “black hole”. It is particularly useful for picking up more aggressive cancers but may also show non-aggressive cancers which do not require aggressive treatment and can be followed up with serial MRI’s instead. Dynamic Contrast Enhancement (DCE) is a method of showing the properties associated with the transfer of fluid between the blood vessels and the tissues themselves. This is affected by the blood flow and the “leakiness” of the blood vessels. Cancer can have characteristic changes which are different from normal tissue and can be shown in a 3D colour image as shown in picture 3. Unfortunately, it is still necessary to take samples of the area to be sure that it is cancer and what type. Usually, only one or two biopsies of the detected lesion under MRI guidance are required. This is carried out with the aid of a robot device which enables us to accurately pinpoint the lesion concerned. In fact, in 90% of cases MRI detects the tumour at exactly the right location and around 50% of the tumours found are non-aggressive
and do not need treatment. This process of imaging and diagnosis was developed by Prof. Jelle Barentsz at the Radboud University Medical Center in Nijmegen, The Netherlands and is now available in Cairns. In fact, there are only eight centers of excellence worldwide with the availability of this technology and expertise. It is important to note that the Dutch Institute for Healthcare Improvement (CBO) guideline 1.3.3.1.1 states that modern MRI is the best option for the detection of prostate cancer in the case of an increased PSA and a previous negative TRUS biopsy. Also, 1.3.3.1.2 of the CBO guideline states that an MRI must be done prior to treatment for prostate cancer. In addition, the MRI is able to detect signs that the disease may have spread to other areas using special contrast studies for that. It will be possible to carry out localised prostate cancer treatment using focal Cryotherapy to small lesions within the prostate without the need for major surgery. I hope that this will put MRI screening as the standard of care in Australia so that management can be more tailored to the individual in the future.
• Gives an overall picture with highly defined 3D colour images • Particularly useful for those men with an elevated Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) blood test • Only one or two biopsies are usually required

Rachel Fennell Better Living by Design from left Andy Taylor, Prime Constructions, Rachel and James Fennell, Urban Properties
WORDS BY PIP MILLER
O
nce a corporate solicitor and professional musician, now a property developer, board director and mother of four. Meet Rachel Fennell, the Creative Lead Director of Urban Properties and the woman who modestly admits these strings to her bow. Having relocated from Brisbane just 12 months ago I am keen to know more about this multi-talented newcomer to Cairns. Together we talk business, family and her passion for music. Along with husband James, Rachel established Urban Properties – creative developers of residential, commercial, retail and special use developments. After numerous successful developments across regional Queensland, the Fennell’s decision to relocate their family of six to Cairns made perfect sense. Urban Properties is currently at the helm of three significant residential developments in the Far North comprising Millhouse Estate in Edmonton, Bluewater Park Estate at Trinity Park and most recently, The Village Edge, Manoora. Added to this, the company has commenced the construction of a commercial building with a public-listed tenant and numerous other sites are under contract for 2016. With many long-term projects in the pipeline, the big picture looks bright for Urban Properties in Cairns, both now and well into the future. According to Rachel the move to Cairns was not solely about being in the centre of the action with their projects, but also about striking a healthy balance that Cairns would afford their busy lives. Rachel says the tropical climate and natural surroundings also played a major role in their decision to move north. “There is beauty in the environment, everywhere I look – it is so inspiring. From the rainforest covered mountains, with clouds seemingly growing out of them, to the lush, tropical landscape, the beaches, the wildlife and the big blue skies. “There is real appeal in living in a place where you can interact with nature. Cairns and northern Australia is such an exciting place to be – it is the land of opportunity. Where else in Australia do you find such
a livable, dynamic and exciting combination for now and in the future?” As someone who moved to Cairns from southern climes many years ago, it is always good to be reminded about what it is that makes Cairns so special. Yet, part of me wonders how someone so dynamic could not miss the cultural trappings of a big city. As a non-executive director of SunWater Limited, Rachel says she has plenty of opportunity to revisit Brisbane and quite honestly doesn’t miss a thing. “I love flying home to Cairns - the mountains and nature in all its abundance that confronts you from the air, just before landing, is simply beautiful and breathtaking.” Getting back to career, Rachel says her role at Urban Properties, as Creative Lead Director is a culmination of all she has learned and experienced to date. Rachel’s husband James agrees and says Rachel’s corporate skills, spanning law, directorships and government work, have proven invaluable in Urban Properties’ success. “Knowing how to deliver a vision, not just create the vision is vital,” he said. On any given day, Rachel may find herself working with architects, designers, engineers, builders, contractors, agents and numerous other professionals to see a project from inception to completion. At the moment she is overseeing the building of new office space including a boardroom comprising floor to ceiling windows with panoramic views of Cairns and the rainforest hills in a collection of randomly sized black steel window frames for a spectacular modern take on Art-Deco style. It is a significant project that will ultimately provide a truly unique place for the Urban Properties team to work. “It is a collaborative process with a good team – my job is to brief all consultants with the vision, organise and manage them effectively, meet the needs of the project and the team members while maintaining control of the overall development. It is my responsibility to ensure the vision and ethos of the project is maintained at all times. “Our point of difference as developers is based on

that thoughtful, collaborative design process from start to finish, predicting trends, giving attention to the smallest detail, and rethinking a better way to do things.” As a busy person, Rachel knows the practicalities involved in day-to-day life and what matters most. “I understand what it is like to have a busy life, a big family, the importance of being organised and more importantly, the positive impact of good design. This understanding of life’s demands makes a good development, incorporating well-designed ‘spaces’. These factors create desirable places to live and an investment with long-term capital growth.” Rachel’s commitment to excellence and thoughtful design is well and truly evident in the company’s latest development project, The Village Edge. Spanning three hectares on the border of Edge Hill and Manoora, this $20 million development is already underway. The Village Edge is 57 freehold, villagestyle and executive homes combining functionality with low maintenance features and the latest in NBN communications technology. According to Rachel, this is a residential project in a prime location that will introduce the concept of urban renewal to Cairns’ residential landscape and in effect, is the first ‘urban’ village of its type. Working alongside Andy Taylor of Prime Constructions, the new urban residences will be ready in 2016. While family and career factor highly in Rachel’s life, so does her passion for the arts and particularly music, which dates back to her earlier role as a professional musician. As a member of the Allan Brown Big Band, Rachel didn’t just play one instrument but three. “I played saxophone, flute and clarinet.” Citing, performances with Harry Connick Jnr and playing at the opening of the State of Origin as highlights, you cannot help but feel impressed. “I am now learning the piano and ukulele and so far I have performed at an open ‘mic’ gig in Cairns! I love how Cairns is a platform for such diverse and exciting acts from the big stars to the emerging and established local performers. There is a great cultural fabric to Cairns and I am enjoying immersing myself in everything the city has to offer.”

CLIENT SAYS... We had been contemplating for quite some time whether or not to upgrade our present kitchen with a few changes or to go the whole hog and replace everything. With that in mind we visited some of the kitchen display premises around Cairns for some ideas and the one we were most impressed with was ‘Artizan Cabinets’. We spoke to Russell, the owner, about our wants, likes and dislikes. He explained what was available and forwarded a few ideas, which resulted in us eventually agreeing that he draw up some design plans for us to have a look at before coming to a decision. Needless to say, once we saw the plans we were hooked. Our old kitchen with its ‘handles everywhere‘ look, was to be taken out and replaced with Russell’s design. Russell also suggested that if we wanted to sell the old kitchen he would make sure it was taken out in a way that it could be fitted easily elsewhere. We hadn’t given any thought about doing this and we thought it was a good idea, so this we did and the selling price helped offset the new kitchen costs. We were kept in touch with all aspects
DESIGNER SAYS... of the build prior to viewing the assembled kitchen on the workshop premises so that any alterations or problems could be ironed out’ We now have a kitchen which we think is special. With its induction cook-top, complete with its hidden range hood system deleting the need for an overhead one and giving us even more cabinet space. Himacs bench tops; Servo-drive overhead cabinets; LED lighting under cabinets and bench tops; all appliances fully integrated; All complemented by a scenic waterfall splashback to add a bit of ‘Wow’ factor. All in all, a top class result. We must give full credit to Russell and his team. Everything was first class and their attention to detail commendable. Nothing was too much bother for Ben and the rest of the boys and their willingness to please and friendly attitude made the end product well worth waiting for. For anyone thinking or intending to upgrade their kitchen, I highly recommend that you go and talk to Russell at ‘Artizan Cabinets’. We did and the result was probably one of the best decisions we ever made.
This kitchen was a pleasure to design and it was a pleasure to work with the clients. They were a lovely couple who engaged me to renovate their existing kitchen and took advantage of our complete Design Service. Their home is set in a relatively new sub division, and the kitchen in fact was not run down and terrible, but was basically a standard project home style kitchen that was ineffective to their requirements. I approached this design with the idea of increasing storage space, functionality and style. I introduced multiple drawers using Blum Antaro soft-close mechanisms. We used motorised Blum Aventos mechanisms for the bi-fold overhead cabinets which allows for taller cabinet space, without the concern of being unable to reach the door to pull it down and close.
Best Renovation Kitchen over $20000
There are drawer systems inside the double door pantry. The island bench, with its curved shape flows from one side of the kitchen to the other, houses an undermount sink with integrated draining board made from Himacs solid surface bench top material, and a sliding butcher block style preparation board. The cabinet doors are made from a gloss Stylelite material which has taken over from two pack polyurethane, and gives an ultra-glossy flat finish without the concern of chips and scratches. The BORA induction cooktops were chosen due to the unique down draft ventilation system which eliminates the need for an unsightly overhead style range hood. We introduced LED down-lighting at the front edge of the bench top, this adds accent lighting at night, and illuminates each
drawer as it is opened. The colour scheme, in black and white is timeless, but without a doubt the main feature of this kitchen is the graphic in the splashback. This image was chosen by the clients after much consultation and my suggestion to choose something which held meaning from them. We toyed with photos of the Scottish Highlands which is where one of them is from. We also looked at the Sounds of New Zealand’s southern island, but settled on this stunning waterfall scene. I really believe that this is a way of bringing character to a kitchen, and a way to individualise the space to make it one’s own. Overall, this was a lovely project for a lovely couple, and I am very grateful that they chose Artizan Cabinets to be a part of their home.

A chance to
There’s been a change in the market recently with existing home prices on the rise, making it better value for money to build a new home.
YOUR NEW HOME Whether you are building on a strict budget or larger budget for upgrading to a long term family home, when you build a new home not only do you get a home that is tailored to your family’s individual needs, it can have modern and the most up to date fittings, and you have a home that will need a minimum of maintenance for many years. Building a home gives you the option to choose the location, the design, the inclusions and level of finish. You get to personalise your home with colour schemes and a design that compliments the land’s best features and it’s suited to your family’s needs and tastes. I advise clients to do some homework themselves and see if what they are looking to build will fit into the suburb and location and that the home will always have a good resale value in the future. You can do this by comparing prices for existing homes for sale in the suburb.
Once you’ve decided on which block of land to purchase consider the layout and design of your new home, as this is extremely important. It can make the difference for you being excited to come home each day and enjoying the lifestyle your new home offers. A good energy efficient design can save you dollars whereas a home that doesn’t take into account our tropical climate can increase your home’s running costs and add to the amount of maintenance needed over the years and ultimately the selling price of your home in the future. A knowledgeable and experienced builder will be able to work within your budget to give you numerous options for your new home in designs and inclusions. They can guide you to the most suitable products and should be able to give you advice on best value for money for your personal choices.
Posh Lifestyle is a contemporary indoor/outdoor furniture design company importing quality products from around the world to enhance the look of commercial and residential properties at affordable prices. We specialise in the styling of display homes and resorts and are able to work with architects for any customised designs.

“If there are no dogs in heaven then I want to go where they went”
L
ast night I was reading a library book with my daughter about a dog called “Toby”. The story followed the life of a family and their beautiful dog from its humble beginnings to the very end of their journey together. As the characters farewelled their beloved pet we were both in tears as we said goodbye to a dog we had never even met. So strong is the impact of bereavement shared between anyone who understands the loss of a dog. For many owners their dog is taken too early leaving behind disappointment and sadness that they were never able to cement a lifetime of memories together. Accident or unforeseen illness cutting short a relationship that never had the chance to grow and flourish. The time spent with our dogs is not measured by quantity and the level of grief can be just as deep no matter how long a period spent together. In other situations our most treasured companion grows old and we are faced with the heartbreaking decision of saying goodbye to a lifetime of memories. It is never an easy process and trying to consider the quality of life for a senior dog is a difficult progression. It seems so unfair that our lifespan is so different and that we must say farewell to one of our most loyal friends. There are many options to consider when we have lost a pet. For many of us it is not possible to bury our friend at home

so cremation is a wonderful alternative. In some instances we cannot bring them home and I guide people in my belief that their soul will always remain with us though they are gone in a physical sense. It takes time to heal from the loss and heartbreak, and every person’s grief process is different. Where possible I encourage anyone to open their heart to another dog. The knowledge gained from owning one dog is invaluable for the life of very companion that follows in their footsteps. We never replace them we simply open our hearts to another precious animal. We all wish for more time together and we hope they understand how much they are loved. I have lost several treasured canine friends in my life and will never forget the years we shared. I believe that every dog we own leaves behind a special imprint, treasured memories of the way they have touched our soul throughout our life’s journey. How lucky we were to be able to walk together and though the loss is so heavy I wouldn’t miss sharing my life with a dog for anything.

“We provide enrolments to our partners, but at the same time we help our customers – the students – compare the courses so that they enrol in the right one for them to get the career outcomes they are seeking.”
“They have very engaging and in depth conversations with people about helping them achieve their goals.” The Cairns based national course brokerage company is the brain child of Directors Steve Corradi and Peppi Ivonella, who recognised the need for courses to be offered in Cairns outside the scope of the hospitality market. Partnering with as many registered training organisations as possible, they launched I Want That Course in 2010 to become the one stop shop for training Australia wide. Aligned with over twenty national training providers, I Want That Course offers over 200 training courses, both online and in campuses around Australia. “We are a Sales and Marketing machine,” says Krystal.
I Want That Course’s free service makes it easy for students trying to find the most suitable course option. “We step them through the process and ensure that they have the right training organisation and right training course that will meet their career outcomes,” adds Krystal. A recent refocus of their business model has enabled I Want That Course to concentrate on the VET FEE-HELP program. Similar to HECS offered at university, VET FEE-HELP enables students to enrol in a Diploma or Advanced Diploma course with no upfront fee. Once students start earning over $54,126, the Government will then deduct extra tax from their pay over a period of time to pay off the course debt. “Traditionally you always had to pay for your qualifications,” explains Krystal. “This is a better way now for people to be
65
CairnsLife
able to invest in their future.” With courses available at campuses nationwide or online, many people are seeking the flexibility and convenience of studying from home. Popular courses such as the Diploma of Beauty Therapy combine online study with work placement options. “How it works is you do all your theory online, then you do work placement in a salon that has clients and you’re supervised by a qualified beautician,” says Krystal. With the goal for next year firmly set on becoming Australia’s leading educational sales and marketing provider, according to Krystal the big picture for I Want That Course is to be game ready to launch globally. “We’re actually looking at New Zealand and the United Kingdom, so watch this space,” says Krystal. With the philosophy of the business echoed in their slogan “Change the course of your life”, this proudly Cairns owned and operated company will continue helping people in Australia change their future - one course at a time.

AUDI review
A5 1.8 TFSI COUPE
What is it? This is Audi's entry point for the classy A5 range comprising more than 20 variants in sportback four door hatch, coupe and cabrio variants. It also ushers in a new 1.8-litre, turbo petrol four cylinder that's economical enough to win Luxury Car Tax concessions gotta like that. What's under the bonnet? There's a small capacity force fed petrol 1.8 under the bonnet of this particular model. It has direct injection and turbocharging as well as variable valve lift and timing to boost efficiency as does auto stop and start, recuperative energy from the brakes and a CVT eight step "auto" transmission with sport mode. It's good for 125kW and 320Nm from a low 1400rpm. How does it go? Really well with plenty of kick in
the mid-range and a strong topend. But the stop and start system causes rather lethargic acceleration from a standstill. Takes too long to fire up and start driving the car. Is it green? Yes, passes Eu 5 emissions and has a swag of economy technology that also cuts emissions. Is it safe? Five stars. Is it comfortable? Comfort levels are high with sporty, well shaped seats and leather upholstery. Electric front seat adjustment is handy and the driving position offers plenty of options. The cabin is roomy enough for four adults and the load space under the large hatch is big. Good audio, plenty of driver assist technology, Bluetooth phone and audio. Pretty much all you need. What's it like to drive? Sporty with a firm, well controlled ride, sharp steering response, powerful brakes and grippy rubber. Typical Euro sporty drive feel with a half decent exhaust note (when you can hear it).
