e’s the man behind the last five covers of Cairns Life. Mick Fuhrimann has over 10 years of experience in commercial advertising, fashion and beauty photography including commercial and editorial post production. “I studied visual arts in Switzerland, but I am a 100 per cent self-taught photographer. I’ve learned through assisting, workshops and mentoring with some of the most talented photographers in Europe and Australia that I was fortuned to work with in the past,” says Mick. “During this period, I picked up a lot of different techniques both in studio and location photography. “Photography is a global language; it’s the opportunity to communicate a n d e x p r e s s t h r o u g h i m a g e r y. I e n j o y the effect that images can have on people.” What goes into a cover shoot? It’s important to capture an individual’s personality; that to me is a good cover. Behind Mick’s Cover: After a long day in the studio, I was retouching some images and watching the movie Men in Black in the background. My partner Alisha came in with her dog “Manny” and suggested taking some photos of the dog. Inspired by the movie MIB, we played around in the studio and captured some funny moments. “It’s important to have fun. It is a serious profession, but if you discover your passion, it’s important not to take it too seriously and burn out. Finding the balance between staying professional, focussed and having fun i s k e y. ”
Strong Visual Impact: I enjoy helping local businesses and individuals get better visual exposure. Local businesses need to pay attention to creating a business portfolio that stands out. It is important to have a strong visual impact. We are overloaded with images every day; you want to stand out as a business or individual. The power of an image can do so much for your business. How does your experience benefit your clients? As a Technical & Creative photographer, I can accommodate a wide range of photographic and post production needs. How do you turn your client’s visions into reality? Communication (before, during and after) is the key to understanding what it is that my clients are looking to achieve. How have your skills and portfolio evolved over your career? • Wider range of different techniques • More versatility • Stronger individual impact of images • More national and international exposure What do you love about your profession? The interaction with people – I meet a wide range of amazing, talented and interesting people. I’m also passionate about sharing my skills and knowledge with others. Secret to Success: • Work hard – hard work will outperform talent any day. • Be honest to yourself as an artist. Be who you are, and express that. Don’t try to be somebody else. • Don’t be afraid to be different. “Click outside the box” • Learn – educating yourself is so important to progress.

“Everything we do is unique; it’s a prototype. It’s always a new challenge every day; no project is the same and each client is different. It’s the challenge of the creative process, being able to influence outcomes and creating something – taking an idea and making it a reality,” says Managing Director, Ian McNichol. Secret to Success
• Client focus • Understanding our profession • Being good at what we do • Technical excellence • “Did I mention we’re good looking buggers,” Pat teases. “We live here, we drive past our projects every day, and we’re proud of what we do. We’re long-term Cairns residents, and we are personally invested in outcomes for our community,” says Director, Liam Kenny.

We’ve got background in providing planning and engineering to the tourism, leisure and service sector that is second to none – evidenced by our portfolio of projects. We think Cairns and Northern Australia is on the cusp of growth and opportunity because of projects we are already involved in,” says Pat.

Automotive (GTA) is comprised of highly skilled mechanical and electrical technicians. Led by local mechanic Gary Tenni, the team shares comprehensive and extensive experience as leaders in automotive mechanics. As a RACQ Authorised Repairer, Gary says that “combined overall my staff and I have more than 135 years experience.” As a fourth generation Redlynch local, Gary was raised on a cane farm, where his interest in all things mechanical began. “I have always been mechanically inclined, since helping my father repair farm equipment. My family has farmed here since 1890. I am committed to the local area and my customers are my neighbours, friends and family,” says Gary. “I fell in love with cars along the way, and loved working on them. It is very important for someone to be passionate about the automotive industry in order to be successful as a technician.” “I believe it takes something special to repair vehicles. If you have that, you can take it as far as you want, which I have done.” “If you’re not passionate about what you do, you’re not going to put forth the effort needed to learn all you can about the newest technological advances. I have always enjoyed
modern technology, performance cars and the variation that my trade provides me.”
“The auto repair industry is based on trust; trust built on knowing that your staff are doing the work correctly. Business is a lot easier when customers know the mechanics that they are dealing with.” “At the end of the day, the business is all about honesty, integrity and doing the job right. It’s the best learning experience anyone could ask for.” “I am surrounded by experienced and expert mechanics who are dedicated to their profession and always eager to update their existing skills. When it comes to problem solving, we are always working together as a team this is what I believe makes us leaders in our field.”
Gary’s advice for car owners:
Regular servicing ensures continued performance and reliability from your vehicle – maintaining its value and reducing overall maintenance costs. Regular car servicing and inspections can detect minor problems, which can easily be sorted out before they become a major problem. Clean and correct engine oil is vital, as it is the engine’s lifeblood. Keeping up with an evolving industry:
Constantly working on a variety of different vehicles, ongoing training of new technologies and problem solving. We are a friendly workshop. Our highly trained technician’s carry out all types of servicing and repairs – including diagnosing electronic problems which are carried out by our auto electrician, Mick Hall. Commitment to customers:
Honesty is first and foremost for me. Building a rapport with my customers in a language that they can understand, and keeping them informed along the way, keeps things running smoothly. Our aim is to provide our customers with a down-toearth and honest appraisal their vehicle’s condition so that our customers are aware of urgent repairs required and others that require monitoring. As the top consultant when it comes to family law matters and issues of wills and estate planning, she has the life experience to relate to her clients and the training and resolve to get them through desperate times. “You have to have the right personality to do this type of law. I have the ability to interact with people and empathise with them. Clients you deal with are going through the worst of times – they’re breaking up, they’re not seeing their children, or somebody’s died. It’s always traumatic,” says Lisa. “People’s emotions just take over when they are in these situations. I have to be a strong support person for them and get them through it.”
“It is my job to offer strength when people need it most.” “I never give up, I’m tenacious and I don’t let my ego get in the way. It’s not about me; it’s about my clients. I’m objective when looking at the facts of a matter and I use my skills and training to give clear and concise advice, and achieve the best results for my clients.” “15 years ago, I was the client. Biggest Challenge:
“The misconceptions people have. People search around on Google, listen to a friend of a friend’s case or accept advice from a Hollywood movie – it’s not like that at all. Every case is different and falls on its own facts and facets of Law. People must get proper, professional advice. For a nominal fixed fee you can benefit from an initial consultation with Lisa to receive the best advice. “There are always changes in the law and you need a consult on the facts of your matter to be given objective advice that fits your personal situation.” Most Rewarding:

What challenges do clients face when trying to go at it alone?
• Too much ‘working IN the business’ and a shortage of time ‘working ON the business.’ • Business is multi faceted and requires a range of skills – technical, management, financial and marketing to name a few. We seek to assist by bridging gaps in a client’s skill set and experience • Rapidly changing environments; political, economic, social, technological, environmental and regulatory must be anticipated and responses formulated and implemented. • Know your markets and anticipate changes and trends. • Dynamic focus on improving competitiveness. • Significant drivers for increased innovation. • Globalisation Many businesses have had it rough over these last couple years. What is your outlook for 2015?
At a local regional level, we are running a two-speed economy. By and large, tourism is now doing well, experiencing good numbers and yields are returning to what they should be. However, there is a real need for new investment, and renewal and refresh of a lot of tourism products if we are to continue to be internationally competitive. Other industries continue to be reasonably flat and in need of economic stimulus. The Singaporean development on Spence Street, due to commence mid-year, will be a significant boost. Needless to say, the Aquis development would be a terrific thing for the region and indeed would be transformational. Retail will continue to face challenges, particularly from online shopping.

Joe Vella By Stacy Wong
Managing Director of Joe Vella Insurance Brokers
V
Joe’s advice for clients to help them reach their goals:
Since commencing his insurance career in February 1978, Joe Vella credits his profession for the experience he has gained through various industries and people from all walks of life.
Speak to a real person who is prepared to LISTEN and UNDERSTAND you, much like what to expect from your doctor or lawyer. Insurance does not allow you to generally have a second attempt at the same claim/loss. You can’t taste, enjoy or say it is a pleasure buying insurance; just want to make sure it works for you just like the consultant.
ella Plaza, originally The Plaza Movie Theatre, is the iconic head office of Joe Vella Insurance Brokers (JVIB). Now operating from three offices, JVIB has grown from relatively humble beginnings because of strong business acumen and dedication to clients and the community at large.
“I love what I do; yes, even after all these years,” says Joe. “Insurance and representing clients has been good for me, my family and my staff. The life experiences, friendships and the ability to help people are very rewarding.” “I would like to think we have been good to our clients and the industry, to give Insurance a face and name you can rely on.” “I am very much a hands-on consultant, insistent on getting a true understanding of my client’s environment as often as possible. This gives me the understanding to properly diagnose and advise.”
Secret to successfully achieving goals: • Be honest, genuine and true with your intentions. • Have passion and persistence in what you do. Add to the mix humility and most importantly treat people the way you want to be treated. • To care for the community and being a contributor, this comes in many aspects. An old friend once taught me that you need to hop on the bus sometimes and not always drive yourself to work. • Put your feet in the other person’s shoes for their perspective. As trust is integral to any consultation for sound advice, JVIB offers reliability and integrity. But Joe says, “it’s important to believe in yourself as well to achieving your goals.”
As a top consultant, Joe regards his position to be an “entrusted one,” he says. “I am giving advice and advising clients with the protection of their assets, investments and importantly this includes the future well being of their business and income for their staff.” “I have a goal I want to achieve with the task at hand; generally it is to serve and achieve a result beyond what my client is expecting”, as a result the motto of JVIB is “Business without boundaries.”

Top Consultants Steve Meers Design Specialist
Full Service Commitment: From concept design to quality built homes, I believe we have been leading the pack for a long time now. Some people still get a little shocked at what we offer before they have to spend a cent. I can also say that I have never done the same design twice unless requested; every home I work on is a custom design and takes all factors into account.
By Stacy Wong
8 full time years with Allaro, Steve has worked on hundreds of concept designs. Steve learned under the builder’s tutelage to specialise in local construction methods and designs to suit all requirements and situation. “This benefits the clients to achieve budgets and site requirements and eliminates any big surprises throughout the build,” says Steve.
What makes you a top consultant/expert?
Steve’s advice for clients to help them reach their goals:
• Providing the best possible service and caring about the client and reputation of the company. • Understanding that this is a large investment for every client and providing the respect and service they deserve. • Enjoying the custom design process of every home. • Providing honest advice. • Local knowledge.
• Be aware that you are not buying anexisting product. • Be sure to do your research to find a reputable builder who will provide the best service and not cut corners for the sake of initial cost saving. • Before just choosing a home off a menu, have a chat with an Allaro design specialist, as it costs nothing.
What do you love about building homes? There is a little pride in knowing what I am designing and working on will be there long after myself. You are not just creating an item; you are creating somewhere people will be calling home for a long time to come.
Gil Foster Design Specialist
Secret to success: • Providing the service the client deserves for such an investment, and listening to what they want. • Adapting to different clients, design styles and using the best technology to take all the guesswork out of what they are purchasing. • Remembering that long-term reputation and word of mouth is worth more than a quick dollar.
40 years experience in design and construction experience over a wide range of fields, enables Gil to provide innovative and cost effective solution to clients’ design needs. “The knowledge that this will probably be one of the largest investments that a client will make in their lifetime the advice that is provided needs to be current and based on experience,” says Gil.
What makes you a top consultant/expert?
Gil’s advice for clients to help them reach their goals:
What do you enjoy most about your profession?
I have a passion for design and client relations. I enjoy turning a client’s dream into reality. Having lived and designed in the tropics for some 30 years, I have an intimate understanding of the requirements for a tropical living environments and I can impart that knowledge to each project.
• In the process of designing your home you need a clearly defined design brief that lists your specific requirements, and photographic reference that indicates your preferred building language this will assist the designer in interpreting your requirements. • A home is not a manufactured product. There is enormous difference in the level of detail and quality of finish between builders. Make sure that you have the right builder.
I enjoy the journey that I take with every client in realising their dream and imparting a little of myself on that project. To have created a living environment that has exceeded your client expectations provides you with satisfaction and pride in your work.
Secret to success: The process of bringing a project from a dream to reality is a long process that requires a lot of listening, advice and encouragement. One must clearly interpret client requirements, providing an unbiased and respectful service to each and every client.

atholic Education in the far north is keeping pace with projected population growth in the Cairns southern growth corridor and growing demand by parents with a new college opening this month and two more new schools opening next year. A Prep to Year 12 college will open for the 2016 school year at Mt Peter near Edmonton, initially with years Prep to 3, with a possibility of further year levels in the starting year. The college will grow quickly to full Prep to Year 12 status in following years to meet the needs of the growing community. When complete, it will be a multi-stream school and have enrolments of more than 1,500 students, similar in size to St Andrew’s Catholic College at Redlynch. Construction of nearly $4 million in support infrastructure including roads and other on-site essential services has already been done, in time for the school’s construction to start in early April. A new primary school at Weipa will also open in 2016 to meet demand by the community. To date Weipa is the largest township in the Far North Queensland region not to have a choice of education provider. The Weipa school will open with Prep to Year 3 and develop to be a Prep-Year 6 single stream primary school with expected enrolments, when completed,
of about 180 students. Construction will also start in early April, on a site adjoining St Joseph’s Catholic Church in Boundary Rd. “It is apparent that more families across the State are seeing a Catholic school as their preferred option,” Executive Director Bill Dixon said. “We are very grateful for the support we have received from those in the Mt Peter area between Edmonton and Gordonvale, and the Weipa and Napranum communities,” he said. Parents may register their interest for both schools by visiting the Catholic Education website at www.cns.catholic. edu.au and following the Home page links. In a strong initiative towards social justice engagement, Catholic Education has opened Holy Spirit College - a Flexi School for disengaged young people in Cairns and Cooktown. The college will cater for students aged 11-17 years who have disengaged from education or for whom enrolling in a mainstream secondary school is not the best alternative. The Cairns campus at Moignard St, Manoora opens this month and the Cooktown campus in Hope St will open in April. Holy Spirit College will enrol up to 52 students in Cairns and up to 38 in Cooktown, including up to 32 weekly boarders from the wider community including HopeVale and WujalWujal.

Like Pope Francis, who is taking church to the streets, we recognise that we too have a responsibility to strengthen our mission and what the tradition of Catholic education is, which is education for all,”

I want to build a
new home
… w h e r e d o I s ta rt Firstly you should talk to a bank or mortgage broker about how much you will be able to borrow. Ask about a combined loan for house and land rather than 2 single loans. It’s more economical on fees and you only have to pay the interest on what is drawn down on the loan until the home reaches completion and final payment. Your bank or mortgage broker will be able to give further information and walk you through the whole process. Once you’ve established the available $$ budget then look around and what suburb you prefer. This is when you should start talking seriously to your builder and designer. Your builder should be able to do a conceptual budget for your new home and that will help determine whether what you want is within financial reach. Do get a few alternatives and be particular that
the home design you select will compliment your lifestyle and be the most suitable for your land. Experienced local builders will know if your land is subject to specific covenants, or possibly covered in planning schemes or policies with the local authorities. This may include flood prone areas; Hillslopes approvals that require geotechnical information; environmental issues such as electric ants; and some areas will even require approval of colour schemes. In some cases there are extra costs involved in obtaining these approvals and you should be aware of these. If you are contracting land that has not been constructed yet you may find that services will be located on or near your block that will affect the design requirements. Make sure you have good access to your land and are not impeded by existing structures or vegetation.
Talk to the developers at this stage and get as much information as possible to make the process flow smoothly. You don’t need to be a builder but you do need to be aware. Some of the best information is obtained by asking the local authority as they provide the town planning schemes and are usually very helpful. Land prices differ from suburb to suburb so this can make a great difference in the total budget for your new home. Some blocks of land will require more site works and preparation and you may want to include a pool or landscaping in your budget. Start with the total $$ budget, take off all these other costs and then see what you’ve got left for your new home. Find a builder who will listen to you and will incorporate those requirements in the design, and budget, of your new home.

1. Loose hinges/handles – Usually a quick spin with a screwdriver can fix any wobbly bits on cabinets, drawers, doors and furniture. 2. Wobbly/loose towel rack – Unscrew the fixture, and replace with toggle bolts to better anchor plasterboard. 3. Squeaky door hinges – A puff of WD-40 or powdered graphite along the pin will eliminate squeaks. 4. Creaky floorboards – Lubricate floorboards with a dusting of talcum powder to quiet creaks from the friction of boards rubbing together. 5. Rusty shutoff valves – Check valves at water supplies to make sure they can be easily turned on/off. Over time, they may have rusted over. WD-40, or machine oil, can help loosen them. 6. Blistering shower ceiling – Heat and moisture are paint’s worst enemies. Scrape off old blistering paint, and recoat. Use high quality exterior grade paint for maximum durability.
1. Carbon Monoxide & Smoke Detectors – Fire departments recommend replacing batteries once a year. 2. Clothes Dryer Vent – Vents clogged with old dryer lint are the leading cause of home fires. Disconnect the vent pipe from the back of your dryer, vacuum lint out of the pipe, and wipe off any excess lint. 3. Check for Water Leaks – Anything you find that shouldn’t be wet or damp needs to be checked out by a professional. Water damage is the most problematic and costly damage to a home. 4. Electrical Cords – Eliminate electrical fire risks by replacing any frayed, damaged, or cracked cords/plugs.

LET CAIRNSLIFE MAKE YOU UP by
MARCIA EBDELL-BLANCH Hair Design With Kirsty’s Hair there was a lot of broken and beyond damaged hair, the Colour was too light and drained Kirsty’s Skin Tone and produced a lot of Pink Tones. So a Complete Overhaul was in order. We created a shattered, textured cut that tapered into the neck with still keeping some length. We tousled the hair to add bounce & Life.
Colour Specialist
With Kirsty’s Colour it needed to be completely changed. We added Protein and Keratin pre-treatments to strengthen the damaged broken hair. Once we had injected some nutrients we filled the hair with some warmth and intense Copper tones. We achieved a beautiful Rich Deep Copper that started at the roots and softly Pastelised towards the ends which gave us lovely Peachy & Coral tones.
Make Up Artistry
Kirsty had a lot of redness to correct within her skin tone, so we started by evening out her tone and complexion with our Mineral Make-Up. We wanted to keep it simple yet elegant so we gave Kirsty a very subtle Smokey eye with a decent application of deep black mascara to extend and give those lashes a gentle curl. We Tapered & Shaped Kirsty’s eyebrows and gave them some much needed Colour. We finished Kirsty’s makeup with a dusting of bronzer and soft blush and gave her lips a pretty Coral tone of gloss and soft liner to complete the look.
TIP OF THE MONTH
Summer Time is now in full swing and we must replenish our Moisture for our Body & Hair. Try our Pure Indulgent Facial Treatment to revive and Our Fabuloso Temptress Treatment for your locks, these will help you combat the harsh Summer sun and replenish your Nutrients.

Valentine’s Day Valentine’s Day is one of the most popular days of the year to propose. It’s a day that’s already romantic, and that you know you’ll be spending together. If you’re planning a Valentine’s Day proposal, check out these ideas for making the moment special and memorable. TAKE $5 OFF WHEN YOU SPEND $20 OR MORE ENTER CODE CAT05
Say it with Candy Buy your sweetheart a heart shape box of chocolates and replace one with the engagement ring. She (or he!) may be surprised that you’ve gotten her such an inexpensive gift, but if you can get her to open it, the surprise will be on her! Another idea is to buy a bag of conversation hearts and find one that says “Marry Me”. Recreating a First Date or Special Moment: Make reservations for the same restaurant, get a tape for the car of the song that was playing on the radio, or make a picnic of the foods and wines you had that day. Don’t forget to wear a similar outfit! In your own words, say that you’ve recreated the moment because it was the moment you met the person you’re going to marry (or knew that you wanted to spend the rest of your lives together), then get down on one knee and pop the question!

Cairns Acupuncture and Natural Therapies
At a Restaurant: According to a wine merchants survey, restaurants are the second most popular place for proposals (at home is the first!). It makes sense that restaurants are so popular, as you’ll have a host of people to help you make things perfect. If a restaurant is in your plans, start off by selecting someplace truly special – perhaps a usual favorite of yours, or one with magical ambiance. Secure those reservations early and while you’re doing so, ask to speak to someone about proposing that evening. They’ll be experts on the nicest and easiest way to do it at their particular location – whether it’s writing Marry Me on the dessert plate rim, or going for a walk nearby to propose before returning for champagne and dessert.

GOOD NEWS FOR
NORTH QUEENSLAND
Wedding industry!!
With the lowering Australian dollar, tourism and destination weddings are becoming increasingly attractive to overseas visitors and a new fast growing website aimed specifically at our region is planning to capture a big slice of this market. It is the goal of Greg and Andrea Mullens to bring more and more couples to the region and to grow the wedding industry in Tropical North Queensland by focusing on the overseas and national markets as well as the gay community for future weddings and they invite the wedding industry to take a look at their new website www.australianweddingcapital.com and to become a part of this booming and growing market. Andrea says “There is no middle man; these potential brides and grooms will be looking at your listings and will go straight to your website and make contact with you directly. If you haven’t signed up yet, it’s a great time to get on board and SIGNING UP IS EASY”.
Here are some interesting facts on how the website is performing:
FACTS:
In just 4 short months since the launch the Australian Wedding Capital site (www.australianweddingcapital.com), there have been some very promising results with Google Analytics. The average viewing time per session is currently 4 mins 30 seconds which means that potential clients are having a very good look around the site and viewing multiple pages. The number of page views and the number of sessions have also grown significantly.
Here are some of the exciting results in recent weeks from Dec 15, 2014 to Jan 14, 2015;
260 sessions from Brisbane 168 from Melbourne 58 from Sydney 41 from Brazil 24 from US 17 from Sweden 15 from UK 12 from Canada and a variety of other countries
In December AWC was coming up on page 5 for the google search terms “australian weddings” and by mid-Januarty coming up on page 2. This is very good for a new site to be coming up organically. Greg and Andrea are currently working on the SEO for a variety of important keywords to increase results over the months ahead as well.
SIGNING UP: To list on the website they are offering standard listings for $200 that rotate position, so each business gets an opportunity to have a higher position on the site. Featured listings are $250 which appear above the standard listings and are highlighted in yellow with an additional scrolling banner ad at the top of the category. These listings rotate as well. Both options now have video capability so you may upload up to 3 videos on your listing page, in addition to 10 photographs. Signups can be done directly via the website homepage: www.australianweddingcapital.com. Please get in touch if you have any questions via info@australianweddingcapital.com Start tagging your photographs with “Australian Wedding Capital” and help grow the recognition of our region nationally and internationally.

Raising awareness on health issues in the community is paramount for health education, making health issues more visible; it’s the best defense we have. Knowledge really is power. We’ve decided to take a stance on health education and focus on health awareness initiatives each month – featuring the insight of our local health professionals providing knowledge, preventative measures and support.

World’s Greatest
Sh av e Event in Cairns
This iconic event is one of Australia’s biggest and most popular fundraising events. Every March thousands of people are sponsored to shave, colour or wax their hair to help people with blood cancer.
A
cute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is the most common form of cancer in children and is characterised by an overproduction of immature white blood cells. These cells crowd the bone marrow, preventing it from making normal blood cells. Due to their immaturity, these cells are unable to function properly to prevent or fight infection. February 28th marks International Rare Disease Day. Each year in Australia over 300 people are diagnosed with ALL. Overall, ALL is a rare disease, accounting for 0.3% of all cancers diagnosed. My name is Belinda Francis and my daughter Charli Francis is currently going through treatment for ALL. She was diagnosed at the age of 2 (28th June 2013). It is a parent’s worst nightmare to be told your daughter has cancer. The day after diagnosis we were rushed via Royal Flying Dr. to Brisbane Royal Children’s Hospital for treatment. Charli faced many surgeries and intense chemo treatments over the next 8 weeks in Brisbane and by week 7 she lost her hair. She was so little the hair loss didn’t worry her at first, until she started getting stared at and pointed at and then the questions started. It was so sad as it wasn’t the children (as you could deal with as they are just curious), it was the mature or should I say ‘immature adults’. As soon as I heard there was a SHAVE 4 CURE I knew I wanted to do it for a few reasons, but mainly to show my princess that if she can go through intense chemo, being very ill at times and lose her hair, the least I can do is lose all my hair: It’s only hair it will grow back.
To find out more about ALL and World’s Greatest Shave go to: http://worldsgreatestshave.com http://www.leukaemia.org.au
Another 2 reasons I’m shaving: For all the children we have met over the years at Royal Brisbane Children’s Hospital fighting for their lives enduring intense rounds of chemo and radiation treatments and also for the little ones who unfortunately gained their angel wings, their memories will live on and never be forgotten. We were very fortunate to be supported an amazing charity Leukemia Foundation who supported us from the second day of diagnosis to present. They accommodated us in one of their lovely villages in Brisbane at no cost at all. This was very helpful to us as hubby was still at home in Cairns trying to function our business, support us and pay the mortgage. We had only just moved into a newly built home 1 week before Charli was diagnosed. So we had a lot of bills we needed to pay, as well support Charli in Brisbane with food and extra medical costs of medicines and toys to keep her entertained. We feel very blessed to have been supported from a charity that we didn’t even know existed. So I am doing this as a thank you and to give back to community to help assist with costs of new families who will be accommodated just like us and who will be faced with terrible news of their loved ones in future. I feel privileged to give back to the community, as without them I don’t know how we would of survived through such a difficult time in our lives. Charli is now in remission. She is looking amazing and currently has a full head of hair and has 8 months left of treatment. We are so lucky to still have her in our lives. My goal of shaving my hair is to fundraise $10,000 for Leukemia Foundation. I have raised $3,000 so far and with help of community I know my goal is achievable as I know from previous fundraising friends did for Charli, the community is very generous and caring. So please help make this happen.

February Health Check
Red Feb, Heart Research Month
Caring for your Heart Writing & Photography
– Cairns Heart Clinic
By Stacy Wong
This month is not just about love and Valentines. February is national Heart Research Month, a month where all Australians are encouraged to make their heart health a priority and proactively participate in the fight against heart disease. To celebrate, Heart Research Australia’s REDFEB campaign promotes a heart healthy lifestyle. Our local heart health heroes are the doctors at Cairns Heart Clinic, helping patients manage and prevent cardiovascular disease. “Sedentary lifestyle, obesity and smoking of course are most threatening to heart health,” says Dr Joseph Ling, Cardiologist. “The older you are, the higher the risk. But family history of premature chronic artery disease increases your risk. These patients should have a heart check, preferably 10 years before the index case, when your parents had a heart attack.” “These days, we can work out your genetic disposition to start prevention earlier.” An alarming 50 per cent of patients die because they didn’t recognize the symptoms of a heart attack in time to get emergency help. “Patients should have awareness of the symptoms of what a heart attack could be. Your chances of survival increase dramatically with early recognition,” says Dr Ling. “Most heart attack symptoms manifest as central chest pain, or chest tightness.” “But it doesn’t have to be pain. It can feel like indigestion; it can be felt in the shoulder, midback, back of the neck, tightness of the neck, or jaw ache. For some unusual cases, they can have aches and pains in the elbow or thumb.” “If patients feel sick, and have symptoms lasting more than 10 to 15 minutes without explanation, they should call an ambulance to get to the hospital and get checked out.” Dr Ling’s Heart Smart Advice: The population in general needs to devote more time to regular exercise. Overall, our lifestyles have become very sedentary.
The Mediterranean diet is the most proven diet to reduce risk of cardiovascular disease. • Less processed meat • More fish • More fresh fruits & veggies • Whole Grains • Olive oil • Herbs & Spices for flavour, instead of salt Vascular Health When looking at heart health, it’s also important not to ignore your vascular health. Dr Roxanne Wu specialises in vascular, arterial and venous diseases. Older populations, and particularly diabetics, are at risk of such diseases. “We are an aging population and there’s rising incidents of diabetes. Old age and diabetes attacks your arteries, and venous diseases occur as you get older,” says Dr Wu. “You really have to be aware of symptoms and problems that can be due to diseases of the circulation. It affects your ability to walk properly, and obviously walking is incredibly important for exercise as you get older to prevent other problems with your health.” “The most alarming problem that you can have from arterial disease is to get gangrene. This is an extreme and last stage of blocked arteries. It’s much more common with diabetics. Diabetics need to take care of their feet and legs.” “Going to a doctor regularly for check-ups is important for prevention. If you have high blood pressure, diabetes, or elevated cholesterol – these can be managed with a combination of diet, medication and exercise. And of course, stop smoking.” Diseases of veins are mainly a concern of vanity for women. “However, there are other serious venous problems that can occur, such as ulcers, swelling and thrombosis. Looking after your weight, exercise and regular checkups are important for preventing serious complications.”

Cairns Radiology brings
NEW CT TECHNOLOGY to Cairns!
Cairns Radiology is excited to be furthering its investment into the Cairns community by installing a NEW dual source (2 tubes) high speed CT Scanner called the definition FLASH. This scanner affords us the opportunity to provide the fastest, most precise and one of the lowest dose scanners available on the market today.
What is the FLASH all about? The Definition Flash is a premium dual tube energy source, high speed CT scanner. Our Flash is the newest, second generation scanner with the latest software systems making it the first of its kind to be available to patients in our region. What does this mean for you? • SPEED – You will experience much faster scans – frequently as low as sub-one second scan times with a table speed of 45cm/sec. This is especially important for children, patients unable to hold their breath and trauma patients where a whole body scan can be performed in less than 4 seconds. • ACCURACY – The Flash enables us to provide scans with far more accuracy with very high resolution unmatched at 0.3mm. This enables us to see the tiniest structures in high detail. • LOWER RADIATION DOSES – This scanner redefines low dose!

• LESS CONTRAST MEDIA – Scans require significantly less contrast media to achieve brilliant imaging. This enables, for example, many renal-impaired patients to undergo media enhanced scans with a higher degree of safety. What will this cost you? As always, Cairns Radiology provides a Bulk Billing service for ALL our patients where Medicare eligible. And there is no waiting list so you can be seen the same day or shortly thereafter. What does this mean for your referring doctor? Your doctor can look forward to seeing the best information and the best quality service from the only locally owned and run Radiology firm in Cairns. From our new premises at 121 Sheridan Street, we strive to offer you the best individual care and service with the most advanced imaging systems available. And, we accept all referral forms.

There are many factors which influence intimate relationships for a couple. One factor is that of male erectile dysfunction, E.D. which is the inability to achieve and maintain an erection to be able to complete satisfactory intercourse. This is usually called impotence. In order to achieve an erection, it is necessary to have blood flowing in to the penis faster than it flows out, a bit like filling a bucket which has holes in it. The single most contributing factor to cause impotence is smoking and a number of studies have shown a direct relationship between the sudden onset of impotence and heart disease within the subsequent six months. As men age their natural level of male hormones (testosterone) decreases. They may put on weight, develop diabetes or have high cholesterol. They may need to take various medications or have other physical conditions including high blood pressure, diabetes or prostate problems or may suffer from depression all of which can contribute. A visit to the General Practitioner is the first step in seeking treatment for this condition. The doctor will take a history, perform an examination and perhaps arrange for blood tests or other investigations. Treatment may involve the use of tablets which may be taken before intercourse is likely to take place or alternatively, some medication can be taken daily in a low dose which allows more spontaneity, rather like being “on the pill”. It is important to note that a recent study has shown that 77% of tablets purchased on the internet have been shown to be counterfeit and that 80% contain less than half the dose of active ingredient that they claim. Some men may find assistance with a Vacuum
Enhancement Device (VED) which is rather like a bicycle pump which is placed over the penis to “pump it up” and then a rubber ring is placed at the base of the penis to prevent it going down. It is important that the ring is only left in place for about half an hour and not forgotten! These devices are somewhat cumbersome and some people find they lack spontaneity. Another alternative is to inject a substance in to the side of the penis which increases the blood flow. It is important not to “overdose” on these substances as the erection may not go down within half to one hour as intended and permanent damage may result. The injection technique should be taught by the doctor and a test dose given to avoid that. Usually the injections are supplied as a single dose. The usual cost for a single dose on prescription is around $15.There are some companies on the internet which supply “cocktails” of medications to be injected at grossly inflated prices or have annual subscriptions for supply. Finally, in some cases it may be necessary for the man to have a penile prosthesis inserted. This is a device which is inserted by a surgical procedure and works using a hydraulic system where the device may be inflated to create an erection and deflated when not required.
Male Erectile Dysfunction • Inability to achieve and maintain an erection • A visit to the General Practitioner is the first step in seeking treatment for this condition. • Treatment may involve the use of tablets • High blood pressure, diabetes, prostate problems as well as depression can contribute.

Having an overseas spouse just got more expensive, with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP) deciding to increase the visa lodgement fees for Partner Visas by a whopping 50%.
The decision to lift the partner lodgement fees was made by the Australian Government to assist in repairing the budget deficit and to fund policy priorities. The price rise came into effect on 1 January 2015 and is expected to increase Government revenue by $48.6 million in 2014-15, $102.8 million for 201516 and $108.3 million for 2016-17. For the onshore visa subclass 801 (Partner (partner permanent)), this amendment will increase the Base Application Charge from $4,575 to $6,865, and increase the Additional Applicant Charge for secondary applicants under 18 from $1,145 to $1,720, and for secondary applicants over 18 from $2,290 to $3,435. For offshore visa subclasses 100 (Partner (partner permanent)) and 300 (Prospective Marriage (temporary)), this amendment will increase the Base Application Charge from $3,085 to $4,630, increase the Additional Applicant Charge for secondary applicants under 18 from $770 to $1,155, and for secondary applicants over 18 from $1,545 to $2,320. In addition to feeding the budget deficit another probable reason for the massive price increase is that the partner visa program currently is the largest visa program outside of the skilled migration visa program with the queue of partner visa applicants continuing to grow with processing times currently between 12 to 15 months from lodgement. The increase to the partner visa lodgement fees will make potential partner visa applicants look at their alternative visa options such as the cheaper and faster skilled migration visa programs thereby reducing the growing partner queue.
Alternative visa options include visas under the Skill Select visa category or the Employer Sponsored visa program. The Skill Select program has the Skilled Independent, Skilled Nominated and Skilled Nominated or Sponsored options which are points test based programs. These require applicants to be skilled and invited, nominate an occupation on a skilled occupations list, have a formal skills assessment for their occupation, have at least competent English and meet health and character requirements. Applicants need to meet 60 points against points test factors such as age, English ability, qualifications, working experience, Australian study, state/territory or relative sponsorship and other factors. The employer sponsored visa options include finding a job offer and having the employer sponsor the applicant using the permanent visa classes such as the Regional Sponsored Migration Scheme for regional employers or the Employer Nomination Scheme for city employers. These visas require the applicant to work in their position with the employer for two years following the visa grant. Eligibility includes having an eligible job offer, meeting a skill/education requirement for the occupation chosen, competent English language ability, be under 50 years old and meet health and character requirements.
To discuss your visa options you can speak to a Registered Migration Agent who can assist in choosing the right visa option for you.

Canine Style Have you ever considered how dogs really socialise in the natural world? Territorial boundaries are established and interaction is confined to members of the immediate pack. An unexpected encounter with dogs from another group is unsettling and extremely dangerous. Verbal warnings and physical displays are often the pretence to aggressive clashes in defence of domain and the family unit. Consider how uncomfortable you feel when someone moves into your space and you are forced to communicate. As humans we expect our dogs to engage in socially acceptable interaction with every dog they meet. We visualise the encounters at the beach and the excited play at the park as the ultimate in canine happiness. Inadequate supervision and ineffective control means interaction in an off-lead environment can become problematic very quickly. Negative experiences during these encounters can directly impact the behaviour of your dog, contributing to the myriad of anti-social problems we see today. Walking in the neighbourhood ensures your dog is familiar with its domestic territory and the other canines that live within the boundaries. An afternoon stroll with friends and their dogs or enrolling in a well organised obedience class is just as valuable as taking them to an off-lead exercise area. Time spent with familiar dogs is the most beneficial way to enrich your dogs desire to socialise. On-lead interaction should always be controlled. Engaging in this manner will become routine for your dog and ensures that encounters are always calm and finish with a positive result. Allowing your dog to pull on the lead and lunge towards another dog
is dangerous and socially offensive. In many cases this can progress very quickly to a display of either nervous or dominant aggression between the dogs. Early socialisation, individual temperament, age and sexual maturity all play a crucial role in determining the way your dog will accept the company of other dogs. Just like their human counterparts not every dog will get along. Regular interaction with familiar dogs is great but always avoids areas with large numbers of animals off- lead engaging in rough and over stimulated play. Your dog will not be disadvantaged by having to interact in a calm and controlled manner. Allow them to enjoy the company of their own kind without forced interaction and unnerving physical and verbal confrontation. Ultimately dogs that are socialised this way lead a more balanced and content life within our community. Positive socialisation maintains physical, emotional and mental wellbeing for your dog. Cairns S.I.M. Trans Pty Ltd (Cairns SIM Trans) specialises in marine transmissions and diesel engines. The team at Cairns SIM Trans shares extensive knowledge and experience with marine vessels and related components; also with expertise in rebuilding diesel engines, transmissions, gearboxes, spray-painting and supplying spare parts for land-based vehicles. Locally owned and operated, this dynamic and growing business is led by Greg Sims, who personally has over 28 years experience. Established in 2006, Cairns SIM Trans is dedicated to repairing, servicing and rebuilding all makes and models of diesel engine and transmissions in all types of marine vessels and land-based vehicles – including mining, agriculture and industrial applications. “My team is dedicated to excellent service, superior maintenance and back-up checks on all the products we sell or repair. The workshop houses a dust-free, air-conditioned engine rebuild room. Cairns SIM Trans has recently expanded into a new second workshop – which accommodates the spray booth, spare parts department and warehousing facilities that house the many new, second-hand and rebuilt transmissions and diesel engines. Cairns SIM Trans aims to diversify into generators – fixed, marine, and portable, with generator hire service for use in remote locations or in the event of a power outage. “Remote work is also part of Cairns SIM Trans’ commitment to our customers. Whether it’s Double Island in FNQ , Thursday Island in Torres Strait, Darwin in the NT, Perth in WA, or Noumea in New Caledonia – no place is too far to travel to ensure our customers’ vessels are repaired.” “We’re here to help you continue your work or pleasure boating with as little disruption as possible.” A complete overhaul of engines can be daunting for vessel owners. Cairns SIM Trans has installed an engine Dynometer, which has the capacity to Dyno test and report engines up to 1300HP. This will facilitate the testing of engines prior to installation into vessels, giving owners peace of mind when they steam out of port. DON’T IGNORE THE SIGNS • Pull over if you notice a burning smell, see steam or smoke coming from your engine. Permanent and costly damage could arise if you don’t. • Check your gauges. Stop if there are unusually high or low readings. • Radiator overheated? CAUTION - Do NOT remove the radiator cap when the engine is hot! • Let the engine cool down, and then make sure the engine is running while you add coolant so that the sudden change in temperature doesn’t damage the engine. AIR CONDITIONING • When drivers can’t cope with the heat, air conditioning keeps us refreshed and alert for a more comfortable drive. • Avoid driver fatigue by making sure your air conditioning is flowing efficiently. • Have a qualified professional check your air system.

with We’ve all heard horror stories surrounding “Dodgy” mechanics either by word of mouth or on Current Affairs type television shows. These hurt the industry as a whole and creates mistrust between honest business owners and their customers.
Many people are uneasy when they take their vehicle to a mechanic for service or repair. It’s something they generally know nothing about. You could be told your Flux Capacitor has changed the Space-Time Continuum and has to be changed! (Of course a Flux Capacitor is a made up thing and has no part in a motor vehicle). I’ve worked on vehicles where customers had marked oil filters with paint just to test if the filter is actually being changed as part of the service. It adds peace of mind for the customer to know that these items have been checked or replaced, but can be embarrassing for both parties if the oil filter is a cartridge type that utilises a lid instead of a whole spin on unit! Best one I’ve seen is a strand of hair, glued between the air cleaner box and the engine! It’s the same with repairs. Was the job done? Was the job done correctly using quality parts?
Being able to talk directly to the technician who worked on your vehicle is valuable. Mechanics are like hairdressers in a sense. Once you find a good one who does the job right and to your liking you rarely deviate. I take pride in forging a relationship with my customers. Giving straight up front answers and being as transparent as possible. It’s not my car, it’s yours, and you have total control over it and how you want to treat it. I can only offer advice and suggest a course of action for a repair or service requirement. We hope to see you in the future and would love to help you take care of your vehicle. Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook!
When I complete a repair on a vehicle I like to show what parts I’ve used. I can then explain what went wrong or show how worn the part was which justifies the money the customer has just spent. In my experience customers love it! They can see with their own eyes just how worn the part was; They got their money’s worth, a new part has now been fitted, they have confidence in their motor vehicle and have a trusting relationship with their mechanic. Larger shops have a front line staff generally consisting of people who don’t know your vehicle. Any information you give may not be relayed nor understood about a particular issue you’re having. More so they don’t know the right questions to ask. The car goes out the back, the mechanic works on the car, paperwork is processed and you’re advised it’s ready for collection. Great news! Did you check the spare tyre for me?...... Umm, sure? Did you check my Flux Capacitor? Of course we did, didn’t even need adjustment!
