FdA Counselling

Level 4 & 5 Foundation Degree

Overview

This foundation degree is for students aspiring to work as a counsellor, or for those already practising as counsellors who want to work towards professional accreditation and develop their practice.

Course duration 2 years full-time, 3 years part-time Centre Ashley Down Entry requirements Students will usually need: 56 UCAS tariff points from A Levels with at least one in a relevant subject 5 GCSEs at grade 4 (C) or above to include English Language and Maths OR Level 2 Functional/Key Skills Minimum Level 2 in Counselling Skills OR equivalent work experience All candidates must undergo an interview with a course tutor and be deemed suitable for the course. You must also obtain a satisfactory DBS check, reviewed annually.

What you will learn

The course covers a variety of topics which may include counselling skills, creative and theoretical approaches to counselling, solution-focused therapy, working with loss and grief, and mental health in a counselling context.

How you will be assessed

This course is assessed through coursework-based methods including written assignments, presentations, practical skills assessments, critical reviews, creative pieces and a portfolio of counselling and supervision logs and reports. You will be asked to complete a minimum of 30 hours in a vocational placement, some of which can be undertaken prior to starting the course. In stage two, you will start an approved counselling placement and practise as a trainee counsellor to achieve 100 counselling hours under supervision.

Where it can take you

On successful completion of the course, you may be able to progress on to the BA (Hons) Counselling top-up course at the college to convert your qualification to a full degree. Please note that there is a deadline for progression applications and places may be subject to availability. You can also progress into employment as a qualified counsellor or use your qualified counsellor status in another profession.

Counselling

Level 6 Top-up Year BA (Hons)

Overview

This course is for students who have completed FdA Counselling and want to convert their qualification to a full honours degree.

What you will learn

This course covers topics including managing sustainable delivery, teamwork and collaborative practice, responding to vulnerability and crisis, working with eco-anxiety and developing transcultural competencies. It also covers higher-level skills including counselling research, collaborative practice, leadership, coaching and mentoring.

How you will be assessed

This course is assessed through reports, presentations, simulated coaching/mentoring sessions, case studies and a dissertation.

Where it can take you

After completing this course, students can pursue further counselling training at Level 7 such as a Master’s degree. Graduates can also progress into employment in a variety of counselling or healthcare settings, or enhance their existing role as a private practitioner.

Student Finance

If you are applying for one of our foundation degrees, the process of getting tuition and maintenance loans from Student Finance is the same as if you were going to university. To qualify, you must meet certain criteria like residency, previous study, age and whether the course meets the criteria for public funding.

Your tuition fee loan is a loan for all eligible students paid directly to the College by Student Finance. You do not have to start paying anything back until after you graduate and start earning more than £27,295 per year.

Higher Education Progression Bursary

City of Bristol College’s Higher Education Progression Bursary is a non-repayable grant allocated to students who study a full, eligible Level 3 course with us then enrol onto one of our higher education courses. The bursary is calculated as a percentage of the course tuition fees, and will be paid in three equal instalments to eligible students during the first year of study.

Financial Support Fund

This fund is to support students who are experiencing hardship and may not be able to complete their course without financial help from the College. The fund is limited and finite, and you must speak to a welfare officer before making an application to the fund.

Disabled Students’ Allowance
