A year in the life of City of Bristol College

Over the last 12 months, our students have participated in worthwhile community projects, excelled themselves in exams and cooked up a storm at local gourmet events (to mention just a few). Here’s a snapshot of what we’ve been up to.

Top of the class This year saw City of Bristol College students build on last year’s A Level and AS Level success. One student, Maria Kling, is heading to Oxford University to read English Literature, which she says is “beyond her wildest dreams”. Other University destinations include Cardiff and Birmingham. The results were impressive across the board, with 13 out of 23 subjects achieving a 100% pass rate and 17 subjects achieving a 94% pass rate or above. Cliff Shaw, Deputy Principal at City of Bristol College, said: “The really strong results achieved this year are a testament to the hard work of students and staff… we are extremely proud of each of our students and I wish them all every success for the future.”

Flying high The Aviation Environment class of 2015 have all been snapped-up by a local employer, with 100% of our students being offered jobs with Swissport at Bristol Airport! Helen Mortimore, Senior Lecturer at City of Bristol College, said of the stunning achievement: “This programme is an example of how meeting the needs of the industry results in employment for young people. We’re passionate about supporting our students and it’s fantastic to see how many of our students go on to employment.” The Aviation Environment programme is part of the City and Guilds Aviation Programme.

Razor sharp skills A group of our students recently competed in the WorldSkills UK National Skills Competition Finals. The competition, which was held at the NEC in Birmingham, saw students vying to be the UK champion in their chosen industry. We were represented by four talented hairdressers and an expert make-up artist and as Simon Bracken, Director of Creative and Leisure at the College explained: “Our students work long hours to prepare for these competitions and their level of professionalism is always impressive. We are very proud of the students competing.” WorldSkills UK plays a vital role in raising standards, esteem and levels of expertise in further education, skills and Apprenticeships through competition activities and local initiatives.

Brilliant Bristol fashion Our fashion, hair and make-up students dazzled the local style industry at the Style Forum event, last year. College students got the opportunity to assist in demonstrations and meet some of the top talent in the fashion, make-up and hairdressing industries. “These events offer a fantastic opportunity for us to expose our students to new industry techniques and skills which support and enhance their education.” Simon Bracken, director of Creative and Leisure at City of Bristol College.

Our cooking counts

Bristol is a unique city with a passion for good food and a nationwide reputation for producing great chefs. Here at City of Bristol College, our Catering and Hospitality department plays a big part in training the food heroes of tomorrow, and we’re gaining a reputation with the country’s top celebrity chefs.

S

tudents from the College’s Catering and Hospitality centres were recently applauded by a string of TV and Michelin-starred chefs at the BBC Food and Farming Awards and the Bristol Food Connections events. Under the guidance of highly experienced teaching staff at the College, students served up a host of dishes to gastronomic giants such as Tom Kerridge and Hugh FearnleyWhittingstall. “The students were inspirational. The food was delicious and helped tell the story of the awards and everyone involved was warm, welcoming and ultra-professional,” said Dan Saladino of Radio 4’s The Food Programme – organisers of the awards. Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall said he refused to move from the backstage area because he wanted more of the devilled kidneys. City of Bristol students are constantly exposed to the heat of the professional kitchen, and many pick up apprenticeships with food and drink businesses throughout the city. In the past year, catering and front-of-house learners have worked alongside Michelinstarred chef Josh Eggleton – a former City of Bristol College student himself – and also Michelin starred-chef Peter Sanchez-Iglesias of the city’s Casamia restaurant.

In two minds about where to study? Don’t be. If the College courses and superb facilities can’t seal the deal, may we introduce you to ‘simply one of the best places to live in Britain’?*

Big-up Bristol! UK’s first Cycling City

Banksy & street art

Thousands of people get around Bristol by bike, and there’s a massive (and growing) network in place to help encourage a car-free lifestyle. It’s why the first part of the National Cycle Network was built here and why we were given the honour of first Cycling City.

Scour the city streets and you’ll struggle not to find an acclaimed piece of street art on a nearby wall. Bristol street artist Banksy has reached international acclaim and many of his works can still be found around the city. Bristol also hosts Upfest – Europe’s largest graffiti arts festival.

Bristol Pound The Bristol Pound is the UK’s first city-wide local currency. You can spend Bristol Pounds at participating businesses throughout the city using either paper currency, or from a Bristol Pound account with any mobile phone or over the internet.

European Green Capital 2015 Bristol was awarded Green Capital status in 2015 and has long been committed to helping the planet through major environmental initiatives. The city was given the title by a panel of European experts for its concrete and innovative improvements to the local environment.

Festivals Throughout the year, Bristol is alive with a full calendar of major festivals celebrating music, gay Pride, cinema, food and animation – as well as hosting the International Kite Festival and Europe’s largest Balloon fiesta. AND, we’re just up the road from a little place called Glastonbury…

Shopping Take a wander around the independent boutiques of Clifton Village or Gloucester Road, marvel at the sparkle of Harvey Nichols or go on a shopping spree in Bristol Shopping Quarter. From vintage and retro to the latest in high-street trends, Bristol is the undisputed shopping capital of the South West.

Apprenticeships At City of Bristol College, we’ve got an apprenticeship with your name on it. We offer over 40 career paths to choose from, and our proven combination of on-the-job training and college study will give you and your chosen career a real boost. And what’s more, you’ll be paid for your efforts. Earn as you learn

Types of Apprenticeship

Apprenticeships are paid employment with training. It’s much the same as having a real job, and whether it’s engineering or hairdressing, you’ll work alongside experienced workers who will help you learn the ropes.

Intermediate Apprenticeship – this will provide you with worthwhile, functional skills and a relevant knowledge-based qualification.

You’ll also study at College towards a recognised qualification (such as an NVQ), which means that you’re getting the very best mix of practical and theoretical training. And perhaps better still, you’ll get paid! The National average weekly wage for an apprentice is £170 and, as your skills develop, your pay will increase too.

Advanced Apprenticeship – again, you can expect to receive valuable skills and training, with a knowledge-based qualification (slightly higher standard). Higher Apprenticeship – our most challenging yet rewarding Apprenticeship will provide you with the skills you need, plus a knowledge-based qualification, such as a Foundation Degree.

How do I apply? Apprenticeships are open to anyone living in England over the age 16 who is not already studying for a full-time course. The specific requirements will vary, depending on the type of apprenticeship, but they tend to be based on a mixture of academic ability, enthusiasm and knowledge of your chosen area, as well as any practical skills you may have.

Course: A Levels

Second year English Language, Media and Psychology A Level student Keran, is following in her sister’s footsteps by studying the same courses. She is really enjoying her time at the college. What were you doing before you came to City of Bristol College?

What advice would you give to anyone thinking of joining this course?

I was at school doing my GCSEs. I then came here to do A Levels and I am now in my second year.

Work hard on your coursework and if you don’t understand anything, ask the teachers. I’ve found the teachers have been easy to approach with questions and quite often I stay behind to find out more.

How did you find the transition from school to College? I really like it here, it’s a lot more laid back, whereas in school people are always on your case and that used to stress me out. At City of Bristol College you have more time to do your work in your own time.

The course tutors are evidently passionate about teaching

Course: Biomedical Science, Extended Diploma Level 3

Medical Science student Kiara wants to be an active player in the fight against illness and disease – “I’d prefer to participate in solving this issue than simply being a spectator”. How would you like your course to benefit you and your plans for the future? A positive aspect of this course is that the outcome has so much to offer, so even if you’re unsure of your specific ambitions, it’s a great place to start. I intend on using this qualification in conjunction with chemistry A Level as a gateway to studying medicine at university. What are your course tutors like? The course tutors are evidently passionate about teaching. Encouragement is a profound element that I have noticed

in many of the staff. And in the case of unavoidable absence, tutors are highly professional in terms of forwarding teaching materials via email when necessary. Why did you choose to study at City of Bristol College? It’s simple to access, offers a broad range of education and over 1,000 courses. I originally studied at a local sixth form, but this course seemed like a decent opportunity to regain where I left off and has definitely met my expectations.

Not every artist or designer is the same, and we want to celebrate that diversity.

Course: Graphic Design

Pasquale is Curriculum Leader of Art & Media, a role that allows him to work with “a great team who are all very passionate and look for interesting and innovative ways of delivering to their students. What makes you passionate about the area you teach?

What have your students been working on this year?

The range of work, projects and assignments we see across the curriculum area is constantly changing. As a visual person, it is a pleasure to work with such a visually stimulating subject, which just gets more and more exciting with every new learner we teach.

My graphic design students have worked on a range of projects, including a series of live assignments, in which several students have earned money from their design ideas that have been bought by companies they have pitched to.

Why is it great to study this course with City of Bristol College?

Which element of your work do you enjoy the most?

We encourage learners to work in an environment where they can gain practical vocational knowledge, while exploring and experimenting in an environment where it is OK to make mistakes. Not every artist or designer is the same, and we want to celebrate that diversity.

It is an amazing feeling to know that the work we are doing and the help we are giving is changing a young person’s life and giving them opportunities that perhaps they did not know were out there.

This course has benefited my plans for the future more than I originally thought it would

Course: NVQ Diploma in Level 3 Nail Services

Brittany appreciates the friendly learning environment at City of Bristol College and has made “some great friends, I am so pleased to have met them,” she says, “everyone is always bubbly, happy and supportive” How would you like your course to benefit you and your plans for the future? This course has benefited my plans for the future more than I originally thought it would and I have considered going onto university and studying a teaching degree in nails. I have also considered going straight into a full time job; I would not need training as the NVQ offers hands-on work on real clients. Which aspect of your course do you enjoy the most? I mostly enjoy the practical side of the course. I am a very social person, so to be working with all different types of people/clients, and to be providing a service that I feel passionate about at the same time, makes for an interesting environment to be in.

What are your course tutors like? Jackie Harris, my course tutor, is definitely the best teacher I have ever been taught by; I have never had a tutor as passionate as Jackie is about teaching us students. She is always happy and very approachable. What are the facilities like at your campus? The facilities at South Bristol Skills Academy have everyone in mind! It is clear to see that equality and diversity is taken into consideration – there are easily accessible lifts for those that struggle to use the stairs, and there are clear labelled prayer rooms for those that may require them.

One day I might be leading expeditions anywhere in the world

Course: Outdoor Adventure

Georgia doesn’t think she “would have enjoyed any course as much as I have enjoyed Outdoor Adventure.” She describes the course as “a great route to develop, learn new skills and provide a recognised career.” How would you like your course to benefit you and your plans for the future? I always knew I would like to go into teaching but initially assumed I would need to follow the A Level route to get to University. I have discovered where my passion lies. Who knows, one day I might be working back at City of Bristol College sharing my passion with future students or leading expeditions anywhere in the world. Which aspect of your course do you enjoy the most? It has got to be the amount of time we get to spend in the great outdoors. In my two

years we have been hiking up Snowdon, white water kayaking on the river Dart and experiencing a lunar eclipse on Dartmoor. This course not only teaches the syllabus it develops skills that are essential for careers in the outdoor industry and life in general. What are your course tutors like? My college tutors have been amazing they are all so friendly and supportive and are clearly passionate about the course. They are always on hand to help whether you are struggling or just need a fresh perspective.

Try it, love it, live it We run a programme called Try It, Love It, Live It, which – as the name suggests – encourages students to make the most of the physical activities and sports that we offer. It’s just one of the many ways we help enrich your learning experience with us. Whatever activity you’re into, we’ll help make it happen. Explore the concrete jungle and take up parkour, entertain while you exercise and learn circus skills, or get stuck into everything from table tennis to canoeing, boxing, dance, rowing, climbing, sailing, touch rugby and football. Once you’ve had a go and discovered the supreme sport for you, the college Sports Development Manager will help make sure you can carry on doing it for the rest of the term. And, if you’re ready to take on a challenge, they’ll create opportunities for you to compete against other colleges too.

Gemma Parry is a Sports Development Manager. She’s proactive about being active, and is responsible for encouraging and helping other students to take part in sports and activities. What makes you passionate about your job? I enjoy empowering learners to gain confidence, self-assurance and a sense of pride in themselves. I absolutely love having the tools to help people be the best person that they can be. Why is it great for students to get involved with our activities? The opportunities are very social and give people the opportunity to meet learners from other courses, other sites and other colleges. What events and activities have you organised in the last 12 months? Some of the activities we coordinate like spinning, circuits, dance, swimming, gym, rock climbing, sailing, cricket, tennis, basketball and football are organised during curriculum time. We also coordinate ‘open’ sessions for anyone to try, which include circuits, crossfit, boxing and tennis and basketball.
