Who Picked This Book? Book Discussion Age: 18 yrs. & older Registration Required T, Sept. 13 & Nov. 8 6 p.m. Who Picked This Book? Book Club is led by a rotation of librarians, so the book choices are varied and there is something for everyone! Selected titles are available to check out about one month prior to the book club meeting. The book for September is “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter” by Carson McCullers — a classic work of American fiction and Southern Gothic literary style. This story centers around John Singer, a deaf-mute who relocates to a Georgia mill town in the 1930s, and the residents who are drawn to him for his kind, sympathetic nature. The book for November is “Cherish Farrah” by Bethany C. Morrow. Farah is one of only two Black girls living in a wealthy gated community. But when Farah is faced with losing her home and having nowhere to go, she manipulates her way into her friend’s household, where she begins to notice strange things. The shocking end to this suspenseful novel will leave readers breathless.

Geek Out! Book Club Age: 18 yrs. & older Registration Required M, Oct. 3 6 p.m. Geek Out! Book Club is for adults who enjoy reading fantasy, science fiction, dystopian, and other unique titles. Book club titles are available to check out from the first floor Circulation Desk about two months before each meeting. The book for October is “A Deadly Education” by Naomi Novik. The story is set at Scholomance, a school for the magically gifted where failure means certain death —until one girl, El, begins to unlock its many secrets. Ukulele Time! Adult Ukulele Lessons Age: 18 yrs. & older Registration Required Every other Tuesday Sept. 6 - Nov. 29 6 p.m. Want to learn how to play the ukulele? Join librarian Ben every other Tuesday to work on chords, exercises, and songs all geared toward beginners. If you are brand new to the instrument, consider arriving early for help with tuning your uke. Participants are encouraged to bring their own instrument or check one out from the library if available.

Movie Night @ Carnegie-Stout Age: 18 yrs. & older Registration Not Required Th, Oct. 6, Nov. 10, & Dec. 8 7:30 p.m. Join us each month for a free movie suitable for adult audiences. Pet Café with Dubuque Regional Humane Society Ages: All Ages Registration Not Required Sat, Oct. 1 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Stop by the library to enjoy tea, coffee, or juice and meet a few cats and dogs from the Dubuque Regional Humane Society. This event is free and open to the public. Please consider donating an item or two to the Dubuque Regional Humane Society to support animals in need (visit dbqhumane.org/donate for ideas).

Korean Lotus Lantern Virtual Workshop Ages: 18 & older Registration Required W, Oct. 5 5:30 p.m. Participate and follow along virtually as a member of the Korean Spirit and Culture Promotion Project (KSCPP) demonstrates how to make a lovely lotus flower lantern using colored paper and wire frames. This virtual Zoom workshop will include a documentary film about Korean culture. Registration will begin two weeks prior to the program and is limited to 20 participants. Kits with all the supplies to make a lantern will be available for registered participants to pick up prior to the event. Envision a More Creative Life with Author Mary Potter Kenyon Ages: 18 & older Registration Required M, Oct. 10 6 – 8 p.m. Mary Potter Kenyon introduces a mind-mapping brainstorming technique that uses both sides of the brain to draw a diagram connecting one’s desires and goals around a central topic. This program will also include a vision board workshop that will give participants a visual representation of their hopes, dreams, and goals. Attendees will leave with an attractive vision board to take home. All materials provided. Space is limited.

Ghost Hunting 101 with Great River Investigative Paranormal Society Ages: 18 & older Registration Required Sun, Oct. 23 6 p.m. Have you always wanted to know how ghost hunters look for signs of the paranormal? Join the Great River Investigative Paranormal Society (GRIPS) in learning about the various equipment used in paranormal investigations and how it works. Members of GRIPS will share where they have been, the evidence they found, and will share the art of debunking. You’ll even hear about rumored hauntings right here in Dubuque!

National Family Literacy Month 350 for $50 Writing Contest Ages: All Ages Registration Not Required Nov. 1 – 30 November is National Family Literacy Month, and we challenge you to compose a short, 350-word story that includes the following phrase: “It all began at the library.” Each entry will receive a book.
