From the Executive Director
The folks playing volleyball on the cover can reap many benefits from playing a team sport, but did you know one of them may be a bigger paycheck? According to a report in the Wall Street Journal, a study published by the Centre for Economic Policy Research concludes that playing sports at least once a month may have as big an impact on your long-run earnings as an additional year of schooling. The study author, Michael Lechner of the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland, concludes that some of the benefit could be chalked up to social networking. While helping you with that networking, team sports can provide many other benefits, too, such as getting regular exercise which releases endorphins in the brain, relieving stress, reducing depression, and making you feel good. And, because your team members are counting on you, you’re more likely to actually get on the court or field rather than work out at your gym! Team sports build leadership skills, enhance self-confidence, and encourage collaboration, goal setting, persistence, and resilience. It’s also a great way to make new friends – not to mention have fun. In fact, team sports are one of the most popular activities offered by Recreation Services. Each year, attendance on volleyball, softball, basketball, soccer, and ultimate teams provided through the Athletics Adult Leagues program tops 100,000. Leagues are offered for women, men, or as shown on the cover, co-ed. Learn more about Adult Leagues on page 33 or go to: www.eugene-or.gov/recathletics. While I’m not advocating that you cut your schooling short, playing team sports can offer many benefits, including having lots of friends to celebrate with when you do get that raise! Water aerobics is just what the doctor ordered Ann Raney came to water fitness by accident – literally.
Aquatics Aquatics Lessons
When walking and physical therapy didn’t heal her injured ankle, her doctor suggested water aerobics. The next day, when she received the City Recreation Guide, “it all fell together,” she says.
Ann has been attending the water fitness classes at Sheldon Pool three times a week for the past year and her ankle has greatly improved. “I can do so much more in my yard and in my life because of the swimming and the water exercise class,” she says, “It’s been wonderful for me.”
Eugene Aquatics offers a wide variety of water fitness classes. Please see pages 34-36.
