Big-Time Humor: Big-Time Shows
Hult Center for the Performing Arts is a funny place—not funny as in “peculiar,” but funny as in “ha-ha.” Yes, the laughs are on at the Hult Center when comedy queen Carol Burnett (May 7) and chuckle kings Jerry Seinfeld (Feb. 6) and Bill Cosby shake the walls with their distinctive humor. Big-time funny people love the “Incredible Hult” big time. Take Carol Burnett, for instance. In Eugene, she’ll hold her celebrated audience-interactive chat before one of the brightest and wackiest audiences she’ll encounter. “I love the spontaneity of these evenings,” Burnett says. “I never know what anybody is going to say or do, or ask, so it keeps me on my toes.” Brace yourselves, Carol, Jerry and Bill. You’re in for a treat. I’ve appeared on the Silva stage many times myself, and while the hall is drop-dead gorgeous, it’s the audience that grabs you. Such

warmth, such love. Electric. Standing before such a smart and attentive audience gives me goose bumps. Can you imagine what it’s like for a comedy king like Bill Cosby? “The Hult Center is a great place for comedians,” shares Cosby, who has performed in top halls around the world and comes back to the Hult again and again. “The people working backstage are very, very human, professional, friendly and family-like. They can turn that hall of 2,000 people into a living room.” No wonder comics say the Hult Center is such a fun place. — Fred Crafts for the Hult Center
Powerful Partnerships Through Dance
Local dance companies and presenters often partner with guest artists from Oregon and around the country to engage and benefit the community. Recently, Eugene Ballet Company presented guest artists The Dance Theatre of Harlem at the Hult Center. In addition to a glorious Saturday night performance, their youth education and outreach performance inspired over 1500 children. This winter, Ballet Fantastique’s partnership with Portland Taiko fuses dramatic drum rhythms and modern ballet. In February, Eugene Ballet Company presents the critically acclaimed dance company Ailey II. “It’s exciting to share what we’re working on here, but also bring in acts from around the country that are on the creative edge,” says Eugene Ballet Company Managing Director Riley Grannan. The Hult Center and Eugene’s many dance troupes frequently collaborate to benefit our community. Annually, Dance for a

Reason brings local dance groups together in support of a worthy cause. This year’s performance will benefit the School Garden Project of Lane County. In February, Greenhill Human Society will benefit from Work Dance Company’s production “Animal Instinct.” The Hult Center for the Performing Arts is a place where the power of the arts transforms lives. By supporting creativity at the Hult Center, you are an important part of this transformation. – Vanessa Salvia for the Hult Center
