NEWS NOTES Arts Impact: $45.6 Million!
People in Eugene are arts crazy—but it took a new Americans for the Arts survey to reveal just how moonstruck we are. Now there’s proof that not only do the arts make our lives richer but fill our coffers, too. From the stunning facts the survey uncovered we now know that the arts organizations that participated in the study: • Are a $45.6 million industry • Support 1,739 jobs • Raise $2.4 million in governmental revenue To learn just how the arts impact the local economy, read it online at the City of Eugene, Cultural Services Division. It’s an eye-popping business and cultural story. – Fred Crafts in TH

Magic Behind the Curtain
The curtain rises and the audience’s attention is directed to the action on stage, though the magic unfolding there is only a fraction of the activity throughout the building. Brian Ference, Hult Center’s Technical Director, organizes carpenters, scenic artists, electricians and other stage crews who work in choreographed motion for weeks or months before a show. “I become a dance captain,” he says, “moving people around the building.” Installing the towering orchestra shell is a dance in itself. Moving on an air caster system, the work requires a crew of eight and takes
four hours to complete. The shell and platform, chairs and lighting must be in perfect position, for performances and rehearsals. “By the time the performance happens,” says Scott Freck, Eugene Symphony Executive Director, “hundreds of hours worked by dozens of people have gone into making the music and the whole evening just perfect.” View a little magic in a time-lapse video showing the installation of the orchestra shell at http://tinyurl.com/ajnm6cb – Vanessa Salvia Call: 541-682-5000 Visit: HultCenter.org
