Find a snowy adventure

with Eugene Rec PHOTO BY BEN SCHORZMAN

Summer and fall may be over but the outdoor adventures never have to end. Rain, shine or snow, Eugene Rec has something fun for you this winter and spring. Let us be your guide to beautiful areas of our city and state where you may not otherwise go. Our snowshoe and skiing trips have experienced guides and van drivers who are here to help and eager to take groups into the mountains to traipse around in the snow. Or, stay in town for a local hike, bike ride or go to the park on one of our guided walks. Many of our 14 snowshoe trips this winter are led by our longtime outdoors guide Dave Walp. Spend a day following Walp as he shares his knowledge of our forests and best practices for fully enjoying a day in the snow. Pack some warm coffee in a Thermos and a filling lunch and sit by a frozen waterfall as he recites a poem.

If snow isn’t your thing, you can stay active through the dark winter months with our wide variety of fitness classes and equipment. Try a class for free during Free Fitness Week in January, drop by one of our pools for lap swim or check out our brand new fitness equipment at Sheldon or Echo Hollow pools and fitness centers. Or maybe choose to beat those winter blues by learning a new language at Campbell Community Center or starting that painting class you’ve been meaning to take. We’re here for you no matter what the weather. See you soon at one of our pools or community centers or out on that snowshoe trip. Just don’t forget to pack that hot drink.

Adventure. Community. Happiness.

Expanding the versatility of Eugene Rec’s indoor-only pool is a large part of the 30-year Parks and Recreation System Plan. A new warm-water therapy pool and the addition of a hot tub are just two of the many options. An expanded patio area and community room would allow for rentals, land fitness and parties, and the addition of an indoor water slide and lazy river would make rec swims at Sheldon even more fun.

Sheldon Community Center has been a vital part of Eugene’s health and happiness for 50 years. The 30-year Parks and Recreation Systems Plan envisions creating more space at Sheldon for childcare programs and expanding offerings for fitness, art and languages. Exploring an addition of a branch library is on the table as well as creating a shared lobby with Sheldon Pool to truly connect the two buildings and their services.

A new multifield sports complex would make our community-wide system more effective and efficient and keep up with growing demand for local amateur sports teams. The multi-use complex would feature baseball and softball diamonds as well as soccer fields to keep local youth teams home and draw visiting teams to our community.

Senior Activities One important part of the 30-year Parks and Recreation System Plan is to identify underserved areas of our community that could benefit from service expansion. This rendering provides one answer to how Eugene Rec might better serve a part of our community that has never had the benefit of a nearby center. While the final location is yet to be determined, this new, 33,000 square foot facility would have classrooms, a fitness studio, a 50-meter indoor pool and spaces for the community to meet and gather.

We create transformative experiences that build social connections and enhance the health, happiness and livability of our community. We couldn’t do it without the partnerships of more than 150 local organizations. Whether it’s donating building space to the Boys and Girls Club, supporting Oregon Country Fair’s youth Culture Jam or helping maintain Eugene public school athletic fields, we’re all in this together. The Parks and Recreation System Plan aims to continue these crucial relationships. The community has said they want us to create more connections and build better partnerships, whether that be forging new ones or reinventing old ones across the board – from community health and social services to education, the arts and economic development. We have a plan for the next 30 years. But we won’t be able to do it alone.
