Bikes, trikes and handcycles for all Adaptlive

When Mitch Wang had a stroke, his wife Paula knew that he’d never be able to drive a car again. But could he ride a bike? She Googled “bike assessments” and ended up on the City of Eugene’s Adaptive Recreation site. Soon, the Wangs were hanging out with Patty Prather, a programmer in Adaptive Services, getting an assessment for Mitch and looking for the right equipment. Prather “was really helpful because she put him on a trike – something I had never considered and knew nothing about,” says Paula Wang. Eventually, Prather helped the Wangs order a Catrike Trail for Mitch and get it adapted so that he can control the gears and brakes with his left side. Now, Paula says, “We are exploring neighborhoods and the bike paths.” Foot-controlled trikes aren’t the only adaptive gear at the City. Robert Taylor was injured in a car accident that left him a paraplegic. His partner, Treena Bell, took him to the City’s adaptive cycling program. Soon, Taylor was out with his family, riding a loaner handcycle. He enjoyed it so much that Bell (working with Prather) secretly wrote to the Kelly Brush Foundation, which provided a grant for Taylor to purchase his own Ti-Trike handcycle. When the Wangs or Taylor and Bell are out on the paths, they might come across Jonathan Yorck, pedaling along on his handcycle as well. Yorck found Prather and Adaptive Rec through his physical

Friday Recreation

Ages 18 & up

therapist and also through trainer Katy Reardon at the Eugene YMCA. Yorck, who had his left leg amputated after an aneurysm, says, “Patty has been a fantastic resource.” Prather helped him order his handcycle and, he says, “even showed me how to put my chain back on” – a problem any cyclist will understand after a season on the bike paths. That’s exactly where Yorck likes to be: by the Willamette River, pedaling along, enjoying outdoor recreation, all thanks to Patty Prather and the City’s adaptive cycling program. If you’re interested in getting assessed, trying out various bikes/ trikes and finding out how the program can help you get in gear, get in touch with Patty Prather at patty.l.prather@ci.eugene.or.us or 541-682-6365. See you on the bike paths this fall and winter!

Training young cyclists leads to safer streets When your kids think they’re ready to bike to school, making sure they’re as safe as possible is probably tops on your list. Recreation’s bike safety education classes can play a crucial part. In 2014-15, almost 1,100 students in Bethel, Eugene 4J and Springfield school districts took a 10-hour bike safety program led by City of Eugene Recreation instructors from River House. The program is part of Safe Routes to Schools, which now runs on a mix of federal, state and local funding. Thanks to a $30,000 grant from the Jane Higdon Memorial Fund for Bicycle Safety, the program will serve even more students in 2015-16, including in Springfield, where plans are in the works for Willamalane to oversee the program in their area.

“The goal of the classes is to increase the use of alternative forms of transportation,” he says, “by creating confident, safe and aware young riders.”

for bicyclists in the classroom before everyone moves outside for bike handling drills and practice. One of last year’s teachers wrote, “Thank you for sending us such awesome, positive, personable and professional instructors.”

The final two days of class incorporate community bike rides in The Higdon Memorial grant money the neighborhoods near the school, helps fund the City of Eugene and Wheeler says this is where Recreation instructors for the volunteers can come into play to help classes. Demand far outstrips keep things safe for the budding funding, and the generous grant will bikers to be. help meet some of that demand. Pool staff impresses rec partners When Aaron Haack got in touch with Rob Guthrie, they got along swimmingly.

Amazon Pool and its surrounding parts and community centers are. He was determined that his staff and the kids under their care be safe at all times.

Yes, that’s (mostly) literal: Haack, director of operations at the Eugene Boys and Girls Club, contacted Guthrie to “I’ve seen lifeguards at other places daydreaming talk about bringing kids’ camps to Amazon Pool, where or on their phones,” he says. At Amazon Pool, staff Guthrie is the senior programmer. members reassured him with both words and actions. “When groups come in with camps, we’re looking for those that are aligned with our mission,” Guthrie says. Providing swim instruction for children who might not otherwise have the opportunity is right on target. Haack has had years of experience at Boys and Girls Clubs, and he was a little nervous about how public

At Haack’s request, every time the Boys and Girls Club campers arrived at the pool in the summer, Recreation staff members gave a talk about behavior expectations and rules – and then Boys and Girls Club staff talked about their own expectations. “A lot of the kids didn’t know how to swim,” Haack says. They’ve gone from being non-swimmers to swimmers, while making new friends. Haack says that organizations interested in partnering with Rec should “Go! Go and use them! They’ve got energetic staff that care about the kids.” If your organization wants to partner with the city, Haack says, “You’d be a fool not to!” Looking for a partnership for your classes or camps? Recreation has quite a few resources to help you out. Call 541-682-5333 to discuss what space would be right for you.

Making creative crafts ... and sawdust Walking into Campbell Center Woodshop, in a separate building just off the main center, means smelling the sawdust and hearing powerful machines cut and polish wood. It means seeing people ask each other’s advice, get help on projects, brainstorm new ideas or sometimes just work on their own. Whether Eugene adults want to carve boxes, create chess sets, make flutes or invent new toys for the grandkids, the Woodshop has the tools and machines to help them out – and the knowledgeable volunteers to cement the deal. Woodshop supervisor Boyd Brumley, who’s been using the space off and on for 20 years, makes many things – and is so used to answering questions about what he does there that he often whips out the response, “I like to make sawdust.” He says it with a smile, though, and is ready to answer questions from everyone who comes to the shop, whether they’re taking the Basic Woodworking class, the Women-Only Woodworking class or the Woodshop Orientation, or working during the Woodshop’s drop-in hours, 9:00 am-3:00 pm M-F ($2 drop-in fee). Brumley says the Woodshop is a good resource, especially for people who retire and move into places

“It’s fun to be creative three or four days a week,” says Rik Bogen, who makes shakuhachi flutes at the Woodshop. Bogen says he enjoys bringing in different kinds of wood to experiment with (the Woodshop has a bit of wood, but most people bring their own) for his flutes. Working in the Campbell Center Woodshop is “for fun and recreation,” he says. “There’s a treasure trove here of information and good ideas.” See page 49 for Basic Woodworking, Women-Only Woodworking, Orientation and drop-in info, or call the Campbell Center at 541682-5318 for more information.
