Fitness, friendship help woman recover After a surgery and an ankle injury, Christina Rathsack began taking deep water fitness classes at Sheldon Pool in hopes that low-impact exercise would help her to lose weight and become healthier. Six months later, she began utilizing Sheldon’s fitness center. Now, two and a half years later, Christina has not only lost 60 pounds and built up muscle tone, but she has also found a community of motivation and encouragement. “Right away I noticed everyone was here for different reasons,” she says, “but we all keep each other on track with our individual goals.” Christina has formed friendships with a community of about 10 regulars,
and the accountability they have found in their workouts has transformed into a bond. With the oldest member 90 years old, these unlikely friendships inspire Christina to stay motivated. “If they are here and working out,” she says, “then I can do it too.” Christina is now in remission from Type II diabetes, no longer has high blood pressure and her cholesterol levels are at a normal range. Working out in the morning sets the tone for a healthier day for Christina, and she often chooses to park far away from stores and walk, something she never would have done before. Christina keeps a calendar at home just for her workouts. She puts an “X” on the days she goes to the fitness center, and seeing all of the X’s makes her smile and say, “I got this.” “It’s a lot of hard work and I struggle every day,” says Christina. “But it’s worth it when my kids say to me, ‘Slow down, Mom,’ and I respond back saying, ‘Mama’s not staying behind anymore.’ ”

Quilter leaves legacy of comfort for kids Jean Liittschwager’s three daughters were so attached to their blankets, it was hard for Jean to wash them. She came up with a solution: she cut the blankets in half, and her daughters didn’t notice each half was missing. Recognizing the bonds children develop with blankets, when Jean began volunteering with the Pioneer Quilters in 1991 and saw unused fabric available, she had an idea. Together with a friend, Jean began making quilts to give away to children who had been separated from their homes due to neglect or abuse. As a former kindergarten and third grade teacher, Jean was a mandatory reporter and saw the impact turbulent home lives had on her students. Comforts for Children has now distributed more than 30,000 quilts to at-risk youth through community service agencies such as First Place Family Center and Womenspace. The quilts are also distributed to hospitals for all children going into surgery

because, Jean says, “It gives the kids something to look forward to.” After 24 years of volunteering her time, Jean recently retired as director of Comforts for Children. Comforts for Children produces about 50-60 quilts each month and receives quilt donations from other organizations. Between five and eight volunteers meet each week in a space provided by the Campbell Community Center. They spread out the fabrics and quilt together.
The group also has kits with instructions and fabric for volunteers to quilt at home. “People take these out like library books and bring them back finished,” Jean says. Over the years, Jean has spoken in children’s hearings and even stays in contact with a few of the kids she knew personally. She says, “One kid is now grown and still keeps his blanket.” Drop in and join the Comforts for Children quilters group any Thursday 12:30-4:00 pm at Campbell. See listing on page 49.
