I’m Genna Reeves-DeArmond, doctoral candidate from OSU. I’m traveling all over the country to conduct my Ph.D research, and I use the Eugene Airport. I’m studying how visitors to Titanic museums use dress to learn about and personally relate to the history of 100 years ago. One of the ways people connect with Titanic’s history is through the clothes worn by passengers on the ship, including their social class, life story and experiences aboard the ship. Traveling then took so much planning and now it’s so easy! I use the Eugene Airport – It fits my style.

From the Executive Director

We love recreation – and so do you! We knew we’d get enthusiastic responses when we asked why you love recreation. And did we ever! You shared hundreds of thoughtful, heart-felt responses. We asked the question during National Recreation Month in July. During the month we also shared several research-backed benefits of recreation. More than 6,650 people saw our posts on Facebook, got tweets, read our newsletter articles or saw signs posted in City community centers and pools about the benefits of recreation. You answered our question through email, Facebook, Twitter, and old-fashioned, hand-written notes. Sarita told us, “Adult Ballet has given me more confidence in my physical and mental abilities.” And Lydia told us, “It’s a great way to keep my mind fresh and my body healthy.” They’re right. Research shows that regular participation in recreational activities benefits physical health and the mind; and persons who exercised three or more times a week had a 32 percent reduced risk for developing dementia. Jennifer says recreation “Makes me feel good.” Studies show that simply walking for older adults can elevate your overall mood and sense of well-being. Melissa R. says recreation “strengthens our family when we play and explore together.” By participating in activities together, research shows family members elicit feelings of loyalty, trust, harmony, teamwork and goodwill. Jennifer B. says, “Recreation has been getting me off the couch and out and about! I have lost 19 pounds since Easter.” Studies show people typically exercise for only a few months, but they will stick with an enjoyable recreational activity for decades; and consistency does the most good. Take a few moments to page through this Recreation Guide and find an activity that you’ll love! Renee Grube Executive Director Library, Recreation and Cultural Services Department City of Eugene

“The City of Eugene Recreation does a wonderful job including children with developmental delays and disabilities in its recreation programs and preschool environments,” says Early Childhood CARES CoDirector Val Close. “Children with special needs are able to learn, play and have fun alongside their typically developing peers, which is a win-win for all children.” Eugene Recreation and Early Childhood CARES are committed to helping children reach their full potential. Parents with concerns about their child’s development may contact Early Childhood CARES at 541-346-2578 to request a free developmental screening. Recreation can make families stronger This is one of the many surprising benefits of recreation that research has discovered. In this study, researchers noted, “By participating in activities together, family members elicit feelings of loyalty, trust, harmony, teamwork and goodwill ... the family experiences create positive memories and are often the catalyst for future participation”* in recreational activities.

Youth Family & Family

Fitness, fun and relaxation are some benefits you might expect from recreation, but did you know recreation activities can strengthen family ties? According to a study by the State of California, “Social bonds are improved when families recreate together and ... families who recreate together are more cohesive and likely to stay together.”*

Eugene Recreation presents many family activities all year around. This fall, there’s a Family Afternoon Raft trip, Family Fun with Clay, the Booo Barn, Breakfast with Santa, First Friday Family Fun Nights, No School Day Recreational Swims, and First Saturday Park Walks, to name a few. And most of those are free or low cost. *California Outdoor Recreation Planning Program: The Health and Social Benefits of Recreation, 2005

Outdoor rec proves especially beneficial Outdoor recreation is truly remarkable for the number and variety of health benefits it provides. “Empirical, theoretical, and anecdotal evidence demonstrates that contact with nature positively affects blood pressure, cholesterol, outlook on life, stress reduction, and behavior problems among children.”* Outdoor activities that include walking are especially beneficial. Studies show the benefits of walking for older adults include managing weight, controlling blood pressure, boosting “good” cholesterol, lowering risk of stroke, reducing risk of breast cancer and type II diabetes, lengthening lifespan, improving sleep, and elevating overall mood and sense of well-being, just to name a few.* Eugene’s Outdoor Program at the River House offers outdoor activities year around, such as snow shoeing, rafting, sailing, skateboarding, surfing, kayaking hiking, tree and rock climbing, and more. * Geoffrey Godbey Outdoor Recreation, Health, & Wellness, 2009 ** State of California Resources Agency. For children, who studies show may spend more than 75.5 percent of their day inactive,** the benefits are equally impressive. Inactivity can result in “obesity and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).”* Multiple studies found children are most likely to be active when outdoors. And, “researchers have discovered that spending even a little time outdoors can reduce the symptoms of ADHD.”*

Campbell Center PROGRAMS AT

FALL 2013

When it opened in 1962, the Celeste Campbell Center was the first senior center north of San Francisco on the West Coast. Today, more than 50 years later, Campbell Community Center is a vibrant hub of activity for adults of all ages! Located in beautiful Skinner Butte Park near the Riverbank Bike Path, this center has lovely gardens and an outdoor courtyard. It is close to downtown and offers accessible parking. The lobby is a popular meeting place, plus there’s a woodshop, pool room, computer lab, and more. Campbell is one of three City of Eugene centers that offer activities specifically for seniors. Adult activities in this Recreation Guide are divided by center so it’s easy to see what is offered at the center you frequent most. You may, of course, attend activities at any center.

Petersen Barn Center PROGRAMS AT

FALL 2013

Petersen Barn Community Center officially became a Senior Center in 1998, although the Adult and Senior Program offered activities at the center long before. “The Barn” as it is affectionately known, helps provide greater access to senior programs for older adults living in West Eugene. The center has a great room for large events, and classrooms for smaller group activities. Located in the Bethel District, the center occupies a corner of Petersen Barn Park, which has a playground, sports fields, bike paths, and accessible parking. Events, classes and activities offered by the Senior and Adult Program promote health and well-being, strengthen support networks, and assist individuals to remain independent.

More adult activities are listed throughout this Recreation Guide. 870 Berntzen Road, Eugene, OR 97402 541-682-5521 Open M-F 9a-5p Center closed Sep 2, Nov 11, 28, 29, Dec 25, Jan 1 On the web: www.eugene-or.gov/petersenbarn Like us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/petebarn

Recreation helps wounded vets recover A research study involving wounded and disabled veterans of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom in three weeklong adaptive and therapeutic recreation programs said the findings “preliminarily indicate the therapeutic potential of adaptive sport and recreation services for combat veterans in increasing perceived competence ... while reducing negative mood states such as depression, tension and anger.” * Researchers observed improvements “in the veterans’ overall perception of quality of life....” The study also “identified the unique ability of adaptive sports and recreation activities to reduce negative mood states associated with PTSD.” * Competency in sports and recrea-

tion “is one area that soldiers with acquired disabilities can experience success ... further facilitating a positive self-view,”* the study concluded. The authors also noted, “Previous research has identified that connecting with resources in a community is a critical component of quality of life for individuals with disabilities.”*
