From the Executive Director

Exercise contributes to brain health We often hear that exercise can control weight, improve our mood, and lower the risk of some diseases, and research also shows it can actually make you smarter. Seriously. The author of “Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise,” cites several studies indicating that exercise can actually increase one’s IQ. Dr. John Ratey says “Exercise … enriches the environment cells need to reach their full potential … which means creating new brain cells. … Exercise really improves the number of new, functioning brain cells that can be spawned every day,” he says. Research also shows that physical activity can actually grow your brain by producing new dendrites – those short, branched extensions of a nerve cell that are responsible for receiving and transmitting information to and from cells. And the news gets even better. More than 100 recent studies showed that the benefits of exercise to the brain are numerous and that they occur in all stages of life. An analysis of dozens of studies from 1947 to 2009 indicates a significant positive effect of physical activity, especially aerobic exercise, on children’s academic achievement and cognitive outcomes. And, a comprehensive review of studies and medical literature showed that older adults who exercise regularly may avoid cognitive decline, may be less likely to develop “silent strokes,” and that exercise may help protect against Alzheimer’s-related brain changes. We have a lot of fun in Recreation, and that may be reward enough. But it’s also nice to know the bottom line is serious science. And that puts meaning behind our words when we say, “Eugene Recreation is building bodies and brains while having fun and playing games.” Now, check out all the ways in this Recreation Guide to build some new brain cells! The Starting Block is located at all U of O track meets and the 2008 and 2012 Olympic Trials. Kids “get to jump hurdles, toss shot puts, and see how high and far they can jump, all in a mini version of what’s happening on the field,” McManus says. The goal is to give kids the opportunity to see what their role will be

in the future – whether that’s as fans, coaches or athletes, and any opportunity to get kids moving is a fabulous win.

Exercise might just make you smarter The author of “Spark: The Revolutionary New Science of Exercise,” says “There are several studies indicating that exercise can actually increase one’s IQ.” According to Dr. John Ratey, “Exercise … enriches the environment cells need to reach their full potential … which means creating new brain cells. … Exercise really improves the number of new, functioning brain cells that can be spawned every day.”

Growing your brain is a benefit of exercise whether you’re three or 93. Parents of children in Miss Lindsay’s Pre-ballet and Hip Hop Bop and Tots dance classes at Amazon Community Center have noticed it. Lara says she can see the mind-body connection developing in her three children as they become “more coordinated, are free and have more selfconfidence.” Chris says although his daughter was reluctant to try ballet, she was interested in Hip Hop and now, after attending that class, she’s more open; willing to try new things and learn new things. Miss Lindsay says, “For the parents, it’s mostly about that progression of where their child starts at the beginning of the session and where they end after six weeks and it’s pretty amazing what happens in between.”

Studies show that exercise, including dancing, can building new brain cells, no matter your age.
