From the Executive Director

The folks participating in water aerobics pictured on the cover of this Recreation Guide are an example of how Recreation Services provides opportunities for individuals and families to be more active and healthy. Recreation is also collaborating with Lane County Public Health to promote community health. Although Eugene and Lane County offer an abundance of opportunities to be active, our community has an issue with obesity which can lead to heart disease, diabetes and many other life threatening health issues. In 2006, for example, the Lane Coalition for Healthy Active Youth (LCHAY) collaborated with other agencies to measure more than 10,000 local children (about 25 percent of all kindergartners through eighth-graders). The results showed that an alarming 37 percent were overweight or obese. To identify community health objectives, the City of Eugene has been selected to be part of the Action Communities for Health, Innovation and EnVironmental changE (ACHIEVE) program funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Over the summer, team members assessed the community’s policies, systems and environment to identify community assets and opportunities for improvement in the areas of physical activity and nutrition promotion, and tobacco prevention. The data will be the basis for health improvement objectives that will be part a three-year Community Health Improvement Action Plan developed by Lane County Public Health. Watch for those results in local news reports and other public communications. In the meantime, check out the many fun, social, and easy activities in this Guide that will get you and your family more active! Pre-school earns heartfelt support Stephanie Dignan and her son, Dylan, are big fans of Mr. Jim’s Exploratorium, a pre-school for ages 3-5 that opened at Amazon Community Center last year. “We were so glad to be part of Mr. Jim’s,” she said in an email. “Dylan loved every minute of it.” The daily plan prepared by Mr. Jim and Miss Lindsay was structured, but adaptable to the children, she said. And the emphasis on art awakened Dylan’s creative side. “He used to be afraid to draw, but

16

now, because of Mr. Jim’s, he’s not afraid to create art. Mr. Jim and Ms. Lindsey never ceased to amaze me with their creativity, patience and kindness,” Stephanie said. “They were always available to give parents insights on how the children are doing.” Stephanie does have one regret: that Dylan, who will enter kindergarten this fall, could have started it a year or two sooner. She asked, “Can we reserve a spot now for Dylan’s five month old brother, Finn?” For more information about Mr. Jim’s Exploratorium, call 541-682-5373.

Volunteer finds helping others ski is exhilarating

One of Keith’s fondest memories is of a woman who had been a skier before experiencing an injury. When she got back on the

slopes with Keith’s help, she exclaimed, “The sound, the sound (of the crackling snow under the skis); it’s just like I remember it!”

Outdoor

A skier since he was seven, Keith Nicolson says there’s nothing like the exhilaration of a good day of skiing – nothing, that is, except helping a person with a disability have that same experience. Keith has been volunteering with Adaptive Recreation’s Alpine Adventures program for nine years. The program uses adaptive equipment and volunteer guides to give people with disabilities the chance to ski.

Keith enjoys volunteering with Alpine Adventures so much that from January to March, he changes his work schedule to four 10-hour days so he can take Fridays off and help more people experience a “great day of skiing.” For more information about volunteering for Alpine Adventures, call 541-682-5311.

Tele-Fest 2012 ♥ This annual festival of Telemark skiing includes beginner clinics, tele-tour groups, races, gear demos and a raffle. The City of Eugene Outdoor Program is offering advanced instruction by professional telemark instructors at this event. Visit Tele-Fest on Facebook. Buy tickets at Hoodoo. Alpine Adventures Volunteers Needed! Get out on the slopes while also giving back to the community. Become a volunteer for Adaptive Recreation’s ski program for people with physical disabilities. Volunteers are needed Fridays and Sundays from January through March, and will receive a full day of training, free transportation and lift tickets for ski days. For information call 541-682-5311.

Inclusion provides benefits for Nolan When Erin Mower enrolled her son, Nolan, in Recreation’s Ducklings pre-school program, she got more than she expected. Shortly after enrolling, Nolan was diagnosed with autism. Erin worked with Recreation’s inclusion specialist to determine what would

and wouldn’t work for him, setting up his pre-school experience to be successful. “Ducklings was the one program that was willing to accommodate him,” she says, “and being around ‘typically developing peers’ made a big difference in Nolan’s development. He learned from peers about getting in line, sitting with everybody else, and learning to adapt.” Erin is grateful for another benefit of inclusion: when she and Nolan see other kids from the program at public events, they recognize and say hi to Nolan. “It’s important for kids to feel like part of the community,” she said. For more info on inclusion services for any Recreation activity, call 541-682-5311. Nolan (not pictured) thoroughly enjoyed Ducklings, a pre-school for 2½-4 year olds.
