Letter from the Editor
Lark (lärk)
1) to play or frolic cheerfully 2) a type of bird that flies 3) kral spelled backwards 4) harbinger of daybreak
I know you were wondering what the heck you were going to do this summer. Ahhh, the Resource Guide I heard you sigh, barely audible above the city’s din, as you prepare to relax into the comforting knowledge that questions would be answered, schedules posted and listings listed. Yeah, well, about that...we’re trying something new this year. In an attempt to amuse, confuse and otherwise engage you we are offering a new kind of summer publication. Welcome to “Lark”, re-mastering the masters issue. Inside you will find insight into the imaginations of Recreation staff as we indulge in our whimsical side, subverting iconic art into recreation memes and otherwise challenging habitual expectations. We have included some nuts and bolts information on free summer programming to provide a smidgen of the familiar (Fun For All and Movie Night schedules, as well as event higlights for June, July, and August to name a few), but less than you can find online or in our Recreation guide—look to those sources for detailed information on summer’s goings on.

So, just to be clear, Lark highlights free programming produced by City of Eugene’s Library, Recreation and Cultural Services Department in a way intended to be amusing, at least, and thought provoking at its best. I’m interested in hearing what you think.

Jurassic Park
A melodrama in a minor key, quietly affecting, quietly chilling, quietly quite quiet…except for the crashing about and screaming. Morally complex, beautifully shaded and filled with fascinating characters, Jurassic Park is the initial installment of director Steven Spielberg’s melancholic meditation on what it means to be eaten. Rife with earthy details and poetic associations, the movie often advances like a daydream. Its suspense builds on the fragile and nuanced business of emotional rebirth deftly metaphoricizing the reconstitution of the Raptor brothers in a particularly tender harmony. Of the many things that happen in this surprising, sad and astonishing movie, none is more staggering than Sam Neil’s evolution from insouciant intellectual to delicately nuanced hors d’oeuvre. Yet again, Spielberg brings us into a world that severely tests our collective daily fiber. Jurassic Park plays Friday, August 1 at Willakenzie Park. Showtime 9-ish.
