Winter/Spring 2011 Rec Guide

Page 1

From the Executive Director Our cover photo depicts a classic program provided by the City of Eugene Adaptive Recreation. Alpine Adventures is the premier regional adaptive ski program and one of the reasons Adaptive Rec is nationally acclaimed for the service it has provided to individuals with disabilities for more than 40 years. The program itself is constantly adapting to meet changing community needs and as a result, the range of patrons it serves today may surprise you. The National Recreation and Parks Association recently honored Adaptive Rec for its service to injured veterans. Other patrons served by the program include individuals experiencing arthritis, diabetes, brain trauma, multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s, or who have had a stroke, all increasingly important with the aging population. In this issue, activities offered by Adaptive Recreation that are listed outside that section are denoted with the icon. Inclusion services allow individuals to participate in virtually any Recreation activity, whatever their ability. Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialists on staff modify programs and train employees to provide specific assistance. This happens at all age levels. On page 15 is the heart-touching story about a youth named Zane who succeeded at summer camp, and more, because of the help provided through Adaptive’s inclusion services. Our cover also tells a story about community. Alpine Adventures depends on the help of many volunteers, such as Robin Hawley, pictured on the cover, to guide skier Angel Vetter and others down the slopes. And the program wouldn’t work at all without the generosity of Hoodoo Ski Bowl which annually donates lift tickets to the guides and the skiers. As it heads into a fifth decade, Adaptive Recreation is needed now more than ever and for an ever-growing number of individuals. Read more about how these services might help someone you know at www.eugene-or.gov/recadaptive.

Help Recreation Go Paperless Beginning this fall, receive an email notice

that the Rec Guide is available online instead of a paper copy! This change will save paper, energy, money, CO2, and waste. It’s the sustainable thing to do.

To check that Recreation has an accurate email address for you on file and that you’ve given us permission to contact you by email, call any City community center or pool; see page 6 for the phone number. (If you receive Rec eNews, you’re good.)

Youth Preschool & Family

Mom finds the perfect preschool for her daugher Doreen Hock knew from the very first day that Mr. Jim’s Exploratorium Arts and Nature Preschool was the right fit for her daughter, Boitumelo, age three. After having shopped around, Doreen said, “The feel of the room, the teachers – it was 100 percent what I was looking for.” Doreen says the curriculum developed by Mr. Jim (Jim Robinson, the lead teacher) “is exceptional. Because the teachers have an arts background they present the learning in unique ways that the kids enjoy.” Dance provided to the kids by teacher Lindsey Shields, is another plus. “Bo loves dance – I watched them the other day with Miss Lindsey and it was so great!” “Boitumelo talks about preschool all the time – she is just all lit up about it,” said Doreen. “She runs to the classroom every day and I have to bribe her to leave to go home.” Mr. Jim’s Exploratorium is offered to children age 3-5 at Amazon Community Center. Sheldon summer camp leads to transformation “When we first signed Zane up for summer camp at Sheldon Community Center, he had been asked to leave five care programs in just over a year. That first summer, Rob Baker was Zane’s inclusion specialist. His patience, understanding and humor were amazing. “At the end of that summer Zane had a particularly hard week. So, when program manager Kim McManus asked to speak to me, I braced for the worst. I couldn’t believe my ears when she said, ‘Is there any way you can continue to bring him here when school starts? We’ve made some great headway and he’s such a wonderful kid.’ I was just floored by the outpouring of support, and have been ever since. “We did find a way to bring Zane to Sheldon, and over the next five years, with all of your help, he has become the warm, sensitive kid you see today. Words cannot express the gratitude we feel in our hearts.”

Water fitness becomes her career When Kelley Courtney’s physical therapist recommended a low-impact water fitness class, she never dreamed it would become a career choice. That was seven years ago. Today, she is an Aquatics Education Association certified water fitness instructor, which she says was “the hardest thing I’ve done since high school.” “Water fitness is a great workout for the able-bodied, as well as a good alternative for those who can’t exercise on land due to physical limitations,” she says. The class can be tailored to the individual’s needs and there are a wide range of abilities in each class. Kelley teaches Inch by Inch in the Water from the pool deck, so participants can see each movement. Kelley jumps in the water for Water Fitness Hour, but stands close to beginners to help them with each move. Both her classes are in shallow water, which she says is great for non-swimmers. “Water fitness helped me personally and it’s a wonderful experience to help so many people become active again and move forward through the class,” she said. The Aquatics Program offers a wide variety of water fitness classes and any of them can be tailored to your specific needs. See pages 36-38 in the Adult section.

“Lynne Mahan has made me a student of yoga for life,” says Jarrell Moore. “The cumulative effect has been profound. Starting with just one class a week, I’ve learned so much that I have used in my daily life to stay balanced, centered and aware. Lynne’s natural authentic way of being can’t help but get you in tune with yourself, through breath, poses and her unique insights to each individual.”

Yoga teacher inspires life changes

When she was two months pregnant, Jarrell attended Lynne’s Prenatal Yoga class and took it all the way to the week before her son was born. “Her centering and strengthening techniques proved invaluable throughout my labor and delivery!” Jarrell said. “Taking that time for myself was so essential; I also met other mamas who I’m sure will remain friends as our children grow. Her class really fosters a community!” Adult Services offers yoga classes for beginner and experienced, including two Try Yoga for Free classes.
