NOVEMBER 7 DAY OF THE DEAD

The Evanston Children’s Theatre presents Monty Python’s SPAMALOT Young@ Part, Original Book, Music and Lyrics by Eric Idle, Music and Lyrics by John Du Prez. Auditions will have a new workshop format. Everyone who auditions gets a part, so register for the program and attend the audition at the Levy Center on August 28 for the cast your child wants to be a part of—there is nothing to prepare, come dressed to move and have fun. Cast A will audition from 9 to 11am, Cast B will audition from 11am to 1pm. Rehearsals for Cast A are Tuesdays from 4 to 6:15pm beginning August 31and Saturdays 9 to 11am. Rehearsals for Cast B are Thursdays from 4 to 6:15pm beginning September 2 and Saturdays from 11 am to 1pm all at the Levy Center. Performances will be November 19, 20 and 21. Join us at the Levy Senior Center as we celebrate Día de los Muertos. This event will feature live entertainment and interactive art stations where families can create ofrendas together. SEPTEMBER 11- 26 TWILIGHT: LOS ANGELES 1992 Anna Deavere Smith’s performance piece Twilight: Los Angeles, directed by Tim Rhoze, and featuring Jazzma Pryor tells the story of the “Los Angeles riots” in the aftermath of the 1991 Rodney King beating from a variety of perspectives. She has collected fragments of monologues derived for actual interviews that both invite and provoke conversation. This timely, powerful performance play raises questions about race, power, truth, and justice. It reveals how myths, misinformation, and misunderstanding can lead not only to prejudice and stereotyping but also violence. OCTOBER 22 TRUNK OR TREAT Firetrucks, police cars and other awesome City of Evanston vehicles will take part in the City of Evanston Trunk or Treat event. Held in the ChandlerNewberger parking lot off of Central Street, young trick-or-treaters can see how City of Evanston vehicles dress up for Halloween. After your stroll through the parking lot, join us in the Chandler-Newberger Center for our Indoor Playground, snacks and craft activity. OCTOBER 23 BUG A BOO Our annual Halloween event will highlight the creatures that call the North Shore Channel home. Learn fun facts and amazing adaptations of animals that live right here in Evanston. You’ll meet these characters (costumed volunteers) outside as you travel around the Ladd Arboretum. This class celebrates iconic Disney music, movies, and characters through imaginative, joyful movement and games. BROADWAY JAZZ Class covering beginning-to intermediate-level technique in Broadway-style jazz dance. INCREDIBLE ANIMALS IN PAPIER MACHE

You will make sculptures, pots, plates and other items by hand-building and using the wheel. Make delightful gifts or create something for yourself. A child and parent work together in a 2 step workshop exploring the fun of making exotic and imaginary animals based on the creatures of Oaxaca, Mexico in Papier-Mache. MINI TREE HOUSE Bring a small branch and any scraps of materials, string, bits of screen or small pieces of wood. Bring a branch that is 12-18 inches long and has branches. MAGIC CLASS You will have fun as they learn fascinating tricks from the Magic Team of Gary Kantor. Some tricks may appear difficult but they are quick to learn and easy to perform. Intuitive art making with intentions and witnessing. Get a break from social media and create art for personal growth & stress management. Explore a variety of art materials and techniques. Podcasts are valuable tools for teaching teens to use spoken language to communicate. Teens will learn the difference between scripted and Q&A podcasts, as well as familiarize themselves with a wide range of podcast topics. This six week session is open to any boy or girl in Kindergarten. Focus will be on development of skills and drills with periods of scrimmaging. TRIPLE PLAY SPORTS

Micro League Soccer introduces players to soccer through fun soccer specific activities that engage each player’s imagination under the guidance of our professionally licensed coaching staff. During the course of our training, players will learn different ball mastery skills to control the ball, evade defenders, and score goals! Players are grouped into “teams” each week for the conditioned games and records are not kept week to week. The concentration is on the player’s skill acquisition and enjoyment of the sport, rather than team records and rankings. This program will prepare players for Team Evanston’s pre-travel program, and is a great introduction to learning soccer in a fun environment. Age: 4-6 yrs. Fencing Learn the basics of fencing with Coach Diana Unger. Fencing requires patience, concentration, discipline and self-awareness. The rewards are self-confidence, self-control and emotional strength. Each participant will receive a mask and a fencing jacket to keep throughout the program. No deposit is required, however if the equipment is not returned on the last day of the class a $200 fee will be charged to your household. The masks and jackets will be pre-cleaned and disinfected. Refunds, Pro-rating and Make Ups The figure skating program follows the department’s refund policy. Classes are not pro-rated if registering after class begins and makeup classes are not offered.

Progression and Testing Classes should be completed and passed in sequential order. Each child’s progress will be monitored weekly and at the end of the session an instructor will evaluate their skills. After passing the evaluation, the skater should enroll in the next level.

Which class is right for me or my child? Parent Tot class is for parents who wish to skate with their children. Snowplow Sam 1–4 levels are designed to help the skater develop preliminary coordination and strength to maneuver on the ice, and are for children ages 3-5 years. Basic Skills 1–6 are the fundamentals of the sport. See class listing for more details. Pre-Free Skate and Free Skate 1–6 is comprised of a variety of progressive skating skills, transitions, spins and jumps—all of which build on the previous skill, providing skaters a strong foundation of all elements. Adults: Skaters 18 years and up who have never skated before begin at Adult 1.

Learn to Skate USA Membership The figure skating program follows the curriculum of Learn to Skate USA, which is supported by U.S. Figure Skating, USA Hockey and US Speed skating. LTS USA requires a yearly membership fee of $17 per child which is valid July 1–June 30 annually. Payment for your membership will be required when registering for your first skating class. Membership fees are not pro-rated regardless of when registering for your first skating class. All figure skating programs require the membership. TAKE TWO Our Take Two program is a great first independent experience for any child! Take Two is designed to provide children with a warm, nurturing environment for children 2-3 years old. Our staff members introduce preschool concepts in a caring, cozy environment, supporting a gentle transition from home to school with emphasis on the active development of children’s social, emotional, and cognitive skills. In addition to activities and learning experiences utilizing the Creative Curriculum, the teachers focus on preschool readiness skills such as taking turns, following simple directions, listening, and sharing. Our little ones benefit from individual instruction during center time and an interactive circle time, followed by art, music, and movement, story time, outdoor play and gym games. Toilet Training is not required for this program.

CREATIVE PLAY PRESCHOOL This program, defined as “innovative play with a purpose” many years ago, has become the standard for our community center based early childhood program. Our multi-age classroom offers children the opportunity to participate in a variety of age appropriate activities as they develop socially, emotionally, and cognitively through PLAY. We utilize the Creative Curriculum alongside Teaching Strategies GOLD assessment tools. Classroom activities are planned to meet the needs of each individual child, and are focused on the development of each students problem solving skills, peer relationships, and making real life connections through math, literacy, and science activities. Super Senior Day is a convenient and voluntary program for driver’s license renewal, which includes rules of the road classroom instruction and a vision screening exam. The rules of the road review course also includes a review of safe driving techniques and Illinois driving laws. The Secretary of State mobile driver services unit will be available for participants to renew their driver’s licenses. An identification card can be obtained for $20. However, if you are age 65 or older you may obtain a free, non-expiring State of Illinois photo ID card. Drivers age 75 years and older are required to take a driving test to renew their driver’s licenses. Therefore, they must visit a Secretary of State Driver Services facility. No Real ID’s will be issued at this event. Registration: Pre-register is required for the rules of the road class at 847-448-8250; space is limited. Admission: Free, registration required. What is the Benefit Access Program? Formerly known as the Circuit Breaker. Benefits available are fee discount on license plates and free rides on fixed-route transit for seniors and persons with disabilities. Eligibility is determined by age, disability, residency and income.

Congregate Meal Program Heaven Can Wait This program is designed to honor our most experienced community members. The Levy Senior Center Foundation will underwrite the Levy Senior Center annual membership fees for program participants who are age 90+. Current membership rates: $34 for residents who live in postal code 60201 and 60202 $54 for non-residents. To qualify, registrants need only to show an official ID with proof of their birthday when they register at the Levy Senior Center.

The City of Evanston offers two enhanced lunch program locations, through a grant administered by Age Options, which will offset the fee of each meal. No person age 60+ shall be denied participation due to the inability to contribute. The suggested donation: $5, age 60 yrs. and up Fee: $7, age 59 yrs. and less.

Please register at least a week in advance. Classes which don’t reach a minimum enrollment level are canceled.

Fee assistance is awarded to qualified Evanston residents on a sliding scale according to the number of family members in relation to total family income. Fee assistance is not available for special events, rentals, drop-ins or trips. Information regarding the fee assistance application process and the documents needed to verify family income and residency may be obtained online at cityofevanston.org/scholarship.

As the City of Evanston has received federal financial assistance, the U.S. Department of the Interior, under Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibits discrimination on the basis of race, color, national origin, age or handicap. Who is a Resident? To receive the Evanston resident rate for a Parks and Recreation Department program, you must live in ZIP code 60201 or 60202.

Class Cancellations In case of class changes or program cancellation, we’ll notify you in advance by telephone or postcard. Generally, refunds are issued within two weeks. If circumstances arise causing us to cancel a class session, every effort will be made to schedule a make up class.

Payment Deadline Payment in full is required at registration (except for summer camps, which allow a $25 deposit per child per camp #/session to hold a space until the balance due deadline). You (or your child) will be admitted to a class or program after full payment is made. If your family has been approved for fee assistance, your portion of the fee must be paid in full before you (or your child) will be registered in the class.

Insurance The City of Evanston does not carry hospitalization insurance for program participants. Contact your health care provider for details regarding your individual plan.

Refund Policy Unless the program is canceled by the City, a $5 service fee will be charged for refunds. For classes already in session, refunds will be prorated and issued in the following situations: 1. Written proof of illness or medical problem for the participant or immediate family member prior to or during the program or activity. 2. Written proof that the participant has moved or will move out of the service boundaries of the City of Evanston prior to or during the program or activity. 3. Unusual circumstances which fall into the category of “hardship.” No refunds on Daily, Seasonal or Yearly Activity Passes/Programs These include beach tokens, ice-skating passes, extended care coupons, fitness passes, season launch permits, leagues, dog beach passes and the like.

How to Initiate a Refund To initiate the refund process, please mail, email or drop off written notice of your request, along with written proof of illness, moving or hardship (see refund policy), to the community center where the program is held. Information: call 311 (847-4484311).

Child Supervision/Pick-up Policies Parents/guardians are responsible for picking up children promptly at the time the program is scheduled to end. Instructors often have other programs to teach and can’t supervise children for an extended period after the program. Parents or guardians who pick up a child more than five minutes late from a program are assessed a late fee of $10 per child per 15-minute time period. For instance, if the program ends at 4pm and you arrive between 4:06 and 4:21, the late fee is $10. If you call and advise staff that you are running late, we’ll allow a 10-minute grace period, followed by the $10 per 15-minute late fee.

Photographs and Videotaping Program participants may be photographed or videotaped. These images may appear in future promotional materials. If you do not want to be included, please tell the photographer. If you don’t want your child photographed, please call 847-448-8041.

Americans with Disabilities Act The City of Evanston’s programs, activities and services are subject to all applicable laws regarding non-discrimination, including the Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA). ADA prohibits discrimination on the basis of disability. The City has established a committee to review its programs and policies and welcomes suggestions from interested individuals. Reasonable accommodations will be made in recreation programs, activities and services to enable participation by an individual with a disability. To aid staff in making accommodations, please contact them no later than two weeks in advance of the program by calling one of the phone numbers listed below, by writing or in person (three weeks’ notice is even more helpful). The time line for summer camps is no later than 10 days in advance of a program. I acknowledge and understand engaging in activities and programming as described in the City’s Program Guides or brochures for programming and/or camp with the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department during the COVID-19 outbreak may be dangerous and carries with it certain inherent risks to me, my child, my family, household members and / or heirs and assigns that cannot be eliminated regardless of the amount of care taken to avoid injuries or illness. There is currently community-wide spread of COVID-19 amongst individuals, which poses risks even when individuals are asymptomatic carriers of the COVID-19 virus. By agreeing to participate in the City’s Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department Programming and/or Camp is assuming an elevated risk. These risks may include the exposure to a transmittable disease(s) that can result in serious injury or even death to me, my child, my family, household members and/or heirs and assigns. I understand, appreciate and agree to personally assume any and all liability and risks on behalf of myself, my child, my family, household members and/or heirs and assigns pertaining to the programming and activities outlined in the Department’s Code of Conduct and Camp Parent Manual provided by the Parks, Recreation and Community Services Department that may be dangerous and carry with it certain inherent risks. I affirm that I am at least eighteen (18) years of age. I, on behalf of myself, my child, my family, my household members and/or heirs and assigns further agree to DEFEND AND INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS the City, its officials, agents, employees, officers, and representatives from any and all claims, actions, suits, procedures, costs of any kind (including, but not limited to, medical costs), expenses, damages and liabilities, including attorney’s fees and court costs brought by any party as a result of my child’s involvement in any aspect of the City’s programming and/or camp directed by the City’s Parks and Recreation Department. I agree to reimburse the City for any such expenses incurred. In consideration for my acknowledgment of, and agreement with, all provisions of this Liability Waiver, the City agrees to allow me the privilege of participating in the City’s programming and /or camp. I understand and agree that neither I, nor my child, are employees of the City, and I am not entitled to any compensation or benefits of any kind. I am not entitled to workers’ compensation or any other insurance policy or benefits through the City. I, on behalf of myself, my child, my family, my household members and/or heirs and assigns hereby agree that I have read where applicable, and will not object to or challenge the protocols and procedures outlined whether in writing or not, any handbook or verbal instruction of the City. Violation of any of these guidelines or any other rules or directives imposed by the City and/or its Departments will be grounds for my child’s immediate removal from programming and/or camp activities. I agree that the foregoing liability waiver is intended to be as broad and inclusive as is permitted by the law of the State of Illinois or any other applicable federal laws and that if any portion thereof is held invalid, it is agreed that the balance shall, notwithstanding, continue in full legal effect and force. The City makes no representations or warranties whatsoever with respect to the environmental conditions, physical conditions, or working conditions of any of the properties where my child will participate in City programming and/or camp activities. By signing below, I hereby agree on behalf of myself, my child, my family, my household members and/or heirs and assigns that I have read this liability waiver in its entirety and fully understand all of its terms. I, acknowledge that I am signing the liability waiver freely and voluntarily, and intend by my signature to completely and unconditionally release the City of all liability to the greatest extent allowed by law. The representations, conditions and commitments contained in this instrument shall be binding upon me, my child, my family, my household members, our estate, heirs, assigns, legatees, next-of-kin and personal representatives.
