To all of us our school is the main part of our daily world. We spend the larger pan of the day here So it is to our new high school that we proudly dedicate our yearbook. Our new buildings have provided a whole new world for us. Its many facilities roake our hours in school much more pleasant. The modem chemistry and biology labs , the home economics room , che shop, and the cafeteria are some of our best example s of the modem, fully equipped rooms. The student lounge provides a place where we can relax and forget the worries and trials of the c lassroom. All in all our new school adds up to a wonderful educational unit to make our school days much more happy and fruitful ones.
This is our faculty and administration. In these men and women rests the tremendous responsibility of educating us. It is hard to fathom the amount o'f work they do for us. Almost every teacher is the sponsor of at least one school organization. Several teachers have the added job of coaching our athletic teams. Many are also trying to further their own educations by working for higher degrees in their particular fields. All these avocations are in addition to the teachers' regular classroom duties.
Now we have a new school which eases the job of the teachers just a little. We have new and modern equipment , the use of v1hich makes many of our subjects more mteresting. The advanced education toward which each of our faculty is striving enabl~s them to apply new techniques to their 10struction and makes them even more qualified to teach their respective subjects. It takes a whole faculty of good teachers and a good administration to raise a school's scholastic standing and to graduate better educated students, and Golden High School is mdeed fortunate to have a very capable administration and a very capabl e faculty.
To the men of the Board of Education we owe one of our most successful years. They chose Golden a s a site for the new high school and planned it to be a model school for the county. We are grateful to them for our school and the opportunity to receive a better education. In appreciation let us strive to take proper care o f our new school and work to improve our scholastic standing s
The scholastic and citizenship standards of a school are the direct responsibility of the principa l. It is his duty to encourage better citizenship and greater study. Mr Johnson has worked hard for these principles in our school and has succeeded in raising our st andards to the degree that we are one of the top schools in the state. We are all proud to have as capa ble a man as Mr. Johnson for our principal.
Miss MABEL BOLlTHO-Student Advisor and Typing
There are other positions in the administration o f our school that the principalhas no time to fill. All of the clerical work of the school , the handling of st udent tunds, and many other miscellaneous jobs are done by the school secre tar y The problems of the students , whether with their fellow stu den t s or w ith t eachers , are capably ironed ou t by our student advisor. The beautiful new library is kept in goo d orde r by our librarian wh o is consta nly adding to our collectio n of books t o make more and better ones available for our use
Mr. WILT.IAM LEWIS-World History and Coach
Mr. RALPH BISHOP-American History
Mr. JA .MES J OHNSON -W o rld History, Sociology , and Geography
History, geography, and sociology are but thre e o f a large groupof s ubj ec t s classified a s social studies. All of these subjects are related in that they d eal with man, his existence, and his environment. Our study of man in high sc hoo l begins with \'/Orl d history Here we gain a fundamental knowledge of how our world came into its present state. Then we go on to geography and sociology, learning man's economic and social problems. In our senior year we take up American history. Here for t he first time we become able to fully appreciate and understand our American hertiage and way of life.
Mr. ROBIRT ELLIOTT - English and Coach
Miss HELEN FAIRBANKS-F.ngllsh
Miss MAUD PRIEST - English , Latin , and Dramatics
Mrs. HELEN NOLLEN-Engllsh, Spanish , and J o urnalism
The next thing t o visiting a foreign country is to learn its tongue Language students not only learn the language, but also become acquainted with many o f the customs and ideas of the coun tr y and thereby gain a better understanding o f its people. It is even more imponant, though , to l earn well our own language fo r, "Reading maketh a full man; conference a ready man; and writing an exact man."
Mrs. CAROL HURR•Music
Miss CHARLENE PETERSON-Art
Mr. NORMAN Beville -Band
Many of those things which add to the fu1ness of our lives are classified as the fine arts , A rt and music are the two subjects of this group that are taught in Golden. In these classes we l earn to appreciate good art and good music and to panicipate in the fine projects and activities ca rried out by the music and art departm ents
Mr. ALFRED PERRELLA Shop and Mechanical Drawing
Mr. VERNON WlilTING •Distributive F.ducation and Office Practice
Mr s KATHLEEN TOWS-Home Economics
Of all the courses in school, t he ones that can be put to immediate practical use are sho p, home economics , and distributive education. Shop gives a boy the feeling of doing something useful and the feeling of accomplishment. Many girls in home economics put t heir skill to work as soon as they go home. Distrib utive education students receive help and instruction in the everyday problem s that they face on t 11eir after-school jobs.
Mr. AMIL SWANSON - Typing and Bookkeeping
The commercial subjects are useful in many fields other than business. They do prepare a person fo r entrance into the business worl d, but they also teach skills that can be ap plied to other activities. Typing is useful in high school and even more so in college. Also many college students take notes in shorthand while listening to lectures. The general p r inciples of business can be a pp lied to many situations to keep record s straight and to work more efficien tly.
Mr. RICHARD BOOTON - Boys ' Physical Education and Coach
Mrs. MABEL BISHOP-Girls ' Physical Education
Besides good food , medicine , and proper rest, it takes physical exercise to keep in good health. Some people are more naturally athletic than others, but all can receive the benefits of physical education classes. Exercises are far more effective when taught by and done under the supervision of a skilled teacher. The finer points of many types of athletic games are taught from the standpoints of both the participant and the .spectator.
Mrs. MONTGOMERY
Mrs. BACHATEY
Mrs. DARDEN
Mrs. RENKE-Head Cook
Every morning as ,.,.e pass by the lunchroom, we smell delightful odors eminating from it. The question always goes around, "I wonder what we ' re having for lunch today?" Whatever we do have, our cooks cook it to perfection. They give us a great variety and we all enjoyed the special Thanksgiving and Chrisonas dinners they made for us.
Mr. ARTHUR PAPENFUS - Biology
Mr. LOREN CHRISTENSEN -Chemistry and Physics
Mr. DARREL HAFLING - Algebra
Aeronautics, Geometry, and Coach
Mr. EDWARD HERBER- Algebra and Geometry
In our modem world a technical educatlon is of uonost importance. The foundations of a technical education are the sciences and mathematics. Vital facts about the world around us are taught in the science classes, biology , chemistry, and physics. A working knowledge of algebra and advanced math are taught in the three different algebra courses. Aeronautics teaches the fundamentals of flight and airplane design. Figures both plane and solid are studied in the geometry and trigonometry courses From these classes come our scientists and mathematicians of tomorrow who work to create a more pleasant and easier world in which to live

With the ne,.,. Golden High School our custodians have a terrifically hard job. But every morning ,.,.hen we come to schooJ we find the floors spic and span . All r epairs are made promp tly and cheerfully . We had two custodians added to our st aff later in the year ,vhen i t became apparen t that we would need more help to keep our huge school clean.
For the first time in Golden's history we have only three classes in our high school, the Seniors , Juniors, and Sophomores. I t is an arrangement th.at everyone seems to like , students , faculty , and adminis tr ation . Ready to graduate this year a re our mighty Seniors Many are sad about having to leave Go l den High , but they leave with a good rec - \. ord and satisfied with wha t they have done " for our school It is a very fine class that is graduating this year, both scholastically and athletically. Next are the J uniors . They have one more year ahead of them during which they will be able to use the fully completed facilities of our new school The Juniors are also building a record of scholastic and athleuc achievement like that of the Seniors. The youngest class in our school are the Sophomores. They have just begun the routine of high school life, but much is expected of them in the future .

Many tJ:ungs combine to make Golden High School what it is, but one of th e most important factors is our athletic program . Our sports activities benefit everyone, the boys who play the game and the students watching from the stands The boys receive the benefit of rigid practice and tra inin.g. The student body have the fun and thrills of cheering t he ir teams on to victory. But sports also teach a great deal The players learn to get along with their teammates and cooperate with their coaches. They l earn physical and mental coordination. They l earn to make split-second decisions, to win gracefully, and to accept defeat. All these things combine to build a man out of a boy The audience in the bleachers also learns good spo:1:smansbip, to win gracefully, and to accept defeat. This year Golden High has had one of it ' s best years in all phases of athletics. We have had highly capable coaches, fighting teams, peppy cheerleaders, and terrific student support. We can truly say, "Football, wrestling, basketball, we ' re the school that l eads them all. 11
Because of only a fe,-1 returning lettermen on this year's squad, the Golden gridders ,-1ere rated by the local ne,-1spapers as having a good chance of placing last 1n the league. The papers found they had sorely underrated the skill of our new head coach, 8111 Lewis, the rapid development of last year's numeralmen, and the team ' s ceaseless ,v111 to win The Demons began the season with four non - league games. Adams City first fell by a 20-0 score, then \vesnninister by a 6 - 0 score, Littleton by a 33-7 tally, and Brighton by a 21 - 0 tally.
Golden dropped the league opener to Lakewood 19-21, but rebounded the next '"eek by crushing Wheatridge 25 - 7
Following a 56 - 13 defeat of Las Animas in a non - league game, the De1nons rolled O\ier Aurora 35-25 and then trounced Arvada 41 - 6 to qualify for the Lower AA State Football Tournament
The first tournament game ,..,as against Brighton ,-1ho ,..,ere handily defeated at Golden 26 - 7. The Demons then travelled t o Trinidad for the state finals Although Golden drew first blood, the po,verful, fast-moving TrinidaJ squad \'lent on to ,-1in 27 - 6, taking the state championship.
Brighton interference couldn ' t do much to stop the hard f 1ght 1ng Demons in th is 21-0
Under the capable direction of Coach Darrel Hafl1ng , the Golden grapplers had a very successful season, winnir,is nine matches, tieing one. and losing only one. In the preseason non-league matches, the Demons defe a ted South 36-13, Colorado Springs 34-16, Litt leton 39-15, Boulder 22 - 21, Engle,.,ood 22 - 21 , and tied Greeley 20 - 20.
The regular season began ,.,ith Arvada taking the ma t ch 26 - 21. However, the Demons proved they wer e not a losing team by downing Aurora 47 - 5, Lakewood 31-17, and Wheatr1dge 31-9. Adams City fell 40 - 5 in a nonleague match.
As in the league , Golden ended up 2nd 1n the district tournament , losing to Arvada by a score of 95-92. Eigh t Golden \vrestlers qualified in the district tournament for the Final Stat e Wrestling Tournamen t. In the fust r ound of the State Tournament, four Demons won. In the second round only Doug Jacobs was able to ,-.rin and he \'lent on t o take the consolation position
The Golden "B" Squad wrestlers had a slow start this year, but turned in some fine performances to split even at 3 \vlns and 3 losses.
This is one of the f e,v times J ay Martine ,vas on the bottom Here he prepares to reverse his position.
After several years of developing h is runners, Coach Bo oton st arted o ut this year with a very fast, well-trained s.quad. In all meets this ye ar, the Demons lost only one This was by one point to Longmont, the defending state champions Golden easily won the confe renc e meet by n ine points In the state meet Gold e n far o utran Longmont to become the state champions Th is was the first state championship in Golden's history and Golden is i ndeed proud of the C r~- Country team for bringing it h ome.

The Cr~ -Country Banque t was an affair that will be long remembered by thooe who attended. There were guest speakers from near and far at the dinner honoring the new state champions
The Golden ballhawks started off this season with a roar. In preseason play the Demons overpowered Ft. Morgan 42-41, Larimie 50 - 38, Sterling 72-41, and West 55-40. Then Golden dropped their first non -league game to Cherry Creek, 49-56. Undaunted by the one loss, the Demon cagers went on to complete preseason play by downing Englewood 70-61 and Brighton 52-47.
The league schedule included eight games and Golden continued on their rampage. Aurora was trounced 59-30 and 42-36. Arvada was no match for the sharp-shooting Demons who trimmed them 61 - 30 and 84-53 Wheatridge fell 36 - 32 and 67 - 53. Golden split with Lake, vood 64 - 63 and 44-58 to become league co - champions with a 7 -1 record During the league season the Demons dropped a non-league game to powerful Adams City 49 - 56.
In post-season playoff games the Demons dropped a hard-fought contest to Lakewood 66 - 72. This forced the ballhawks to play North, the Denver League co - champions. Although the team played hard, the superior height of North led them to a 62-43 victory.
The "B" Squad through the years has proved to be a fine developer of varsity athletes. This year ' s team showed great ability and great promise for the future. During the basketball season, the "B" Squad played other "B" Squads from many of the same schools that the varsity played. Under the competant handling of Coach Elliott, the team compiled a 5 - 4 record

Rod Peterson shows the jumping ability that earned him an All-Conference rating. His brilliant rebounding helped keep the Demons often in posse~ion of the ball
Gary Flebbe may be down, but neither he nor the rest of the team was ever out .
Don Maurer stretches high and far making a layup and showing the form that made him an AllConference forward
Gary Flebbe seems to be putting out all his effort driving in for a layup. This picture shows the determination and spirit with which this year ' s basketball team played.
The ball leaves Gary Flebbe 1s hand on its way through the net. Flebbe made approximate l y onehalf of all his shots thls year, compiling the highest scoring percentage on the team.

This year our baseball team had a new Head Coach, Bob Elliott and a lot of new material. With only a few returning lettermen, Coach Elliott had a difficult building job ahead of him, but one which he capably managed
Drew Barbee demonstrates the skill and determination that signified the Demons all year long Incidentally, he knocked the ball a country mile on this pitch.
With several returning lettermen and the state champion Cross-Country Squad, the Demons had one of the finest track and field team s 1n the state Coach Booton ha s worked with the freshman squad also to build a team of the future.

High School life is far more than books and classes. As well as sports , th ere are in· numerable other activities in ,-rhich to panicipate and which keep a monotonous routine from forming. Our school has clubs and or ganizati ons of every type; clubs for athletes and other sports -mind ed students , clubs for performing services for the school, and clubs to generate interest in some particular field or subject. All our school organizations provide ample work for spare time, develop good character and citizenship and develop leadership. The idea of service is one of the foremost principles in all our organizations. No matter to which ones any of us belong, we all enjoy school much more for our extracurricular activities.
Pep and enthusiasm were the by-words of our cheerleaders this year. They constantly wor ked to keep our school spiri t alive. Their clever routines were smoo th and well-coordinated and showed a great deal of practice. The pride of the Pep Clu b and en tire school were our chee rl eaders, Shir ley Gillett, Joann Babcock, Gwen Maughan, and JoAnn Papageorge.
To the players on the football field, the basketball court , the wrestling mat, and the baseball diamond, the moral support of the student body is all-important. Always there and always supplying the support was the Pep Club At all athletic contests, home and away, the Pep Club cheered their hardest in victory and defeat.
Often the Pep Club girls were able to persuade some of our athletes to take part in their pep ass em bl y skits. The results ,.,ere usually very humorou s as can be seen in these pictures of the funniest of the skits
