IN GRATITUDE

It is with extreme pride and pleasure that we gratefully dedicate El Diablo 's Diary of 1958 to Mr. and Mrs. Bishop.

Mrs. Bishop has for fourteen years been girls' athletic director at Golden High School. She has also sponsored the Girls' Athletic Association to provide its members with constructive extracurricular activity.

Mr. Bishop has taught American history and ocher subJects in the field of social studies for twenty-two years. He has also traditionally been the sponsor of the Senior Class and was formerly band director in the Golden school system.

Togethe r Mr. and Mrs. Bishop have served Golden High School fa1thfully for thirty-six years with little thanks other than their own personal sa t is faction. Therefore, ,.,e feel 1t is high time we expressed ou r heartfelt appreciation to two of the finest instructors in the history of Go l den High.

BOARD OF EDUCATION

The young, aggressive Board of Education of Jefferson County has instigated many new programs for the improvement of our school system. The Board has backed the study of class sizes as ,vell as a c celerated courses for advanced students. They have also promoted the building of more new and modern sc hools for bettei education in the county .

The educational opportunities we have received this past year in our ne,., school are due largely to the Board. We feel that this 1s a fitting time to once again express our thanks and appreciation.

This was the first season for Golden's new football coach , Lou Rillos . He began the season with a huge squad consisting of mostly seniors and sophomores, inclu ding several returning lettermen. Coach Rillos soon proved his merit by guiding the fast moving Demons over their first three opponents in shutouts. Then the s quad traveled to Laramie, Wyoming, where the Cowboys handed them a 45-0 defeat. Despite this hard loss, the team rebounded to trounce Arvada in the first conference game and qualify for the sta te Lower AA playoffs. Wheatridg e also bowed to Golden making our team, thus far, unscored upon in Colorado. Ho\'1ev e r, our flu and injury-ridden squad lost an important and muddy contest to Lakewood in the next game. During the remainder of the regular se a so n, the Demons defeated West High in another shutout and then lost to Aurora to finish in a tie with Aurora and Arvada for second place in the conference. The first state playoff game ,vas scheduled with Cherry Creek. On this cold afternoon the Bruins reversed their defeat in the first of the season to elimina te u s from the tournament. During this season the Demons showed great skill and courage in both victory and defeat. Injuries to key players were a constant hinderance throughout the season; but \.,ith the usual Golden spirit, the team s till came out close to the top.

BASKETBALL CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

This year the Demon ballhawks had the smallest team in the league and perhaps the smallest in the state , but as in years past Golden came through to a flying finish. The season wa s inaugurated by a seri es of seve n non-league games in which the demons proved their potential with a pugnacious defense and an accurat e shooting o ffen se Th e beginning of the league season saw two close contests aga i nst Au r ora and Arvada. But the Coach Le wi s ' well trained s qu ad began to attain victories by large margins in score. The confe r ence season was comp l e t ed with Golden hold ing a 7 -1 record and the league championship

In the state championship tournament Golden first drew unbeaten Manuel High of Denver. rated th e top team in Colorado. For 31 minutes the spirited Demons held off the powerfu l M anual attack; but as the last seco nd s approached. the to,-1ering Thunderbolts \videned their margin \vlth a barrage of baskets t o nudge Golden into the consolation bracket.

Despite overwhelming odds , our Golden Cagers proved once again that they could make a pretty big splash in the proverbial bucket.

DEMONS IN A C TION

Gary prove s that you don ' t have to be tall to dunk a ball. All you have to do i s learn how t.o jump over the other guy's head.

Looks as if the "B" Squad games are as rough as the varsity games.
93
Mickey Baker's lay-up shots helped Golden win this game with Arvada by two points.

Although hard luck kept the Golden Wrestlers at a narrow margin between defeat and victory, they came out with a fighting heart and showed great team spirit. Even with this team spirit the Demons were kept to a match record of seven losses, two ,.,ins and two ties

The season did not prove too fruitful as far as wins ,.,ere concerned, but the boys on the squad gained valuable lessons in sportsmanship and much experience in ,-.,restling Sometimes during a victorious season we tend to overlook those important items ,-.,hich make our sports program so successful at Golden High School.

TENNIS CONFERENCE CHAMPIONS

Starting late in the year because of bad weather , Coach Hafling had a very busy season with his four returning Seniors and five ne,.,, Sophomores. Although the season history was one of only average incidence, its highlight came at the conference championship at Aurora At this meet Golden received two first and two second place wins to squeeze out Whea tridge, though only by a few points. Because the Sophomores shared half the honors i n this year's season we are looking forward to and depending on their success in the future

Not to have any spare time. Coach Haf11ng took up another sport, golf, to add to his other act1v1ues and ,.,as equally as successful. Being edged out of the championship by Aurora, Golden placed second in the conference beating Lakewood and Whea u idge
