Each month this year, Coffee with Councilors, hosted by Councilors
JJ Trout and Casey Brown, centered discussion around a value from the Golden Vision 2030 document, which can be found at www.cityofgolden.net/GV2030.
We wanted to know how Goldenites see the City of Golden putting those values into practice, and how we can do better to reach our vision. We examined in depth each of the value themes from Golden Vision 2030 and even had City Manager Scott Vargo as our special guest for our November meeting discussion of belonging and volunteering.
Next year, we'll continue meeting the first Saturday of every month at 10 a.m. in the Golden Community Center Front Porch area. In 2023, we'll highlight different success factors and actions from our Strategic Action Plan. For January, we'll kick off with an overview of the Strategic Action plan, including how it was created, how it gets updated, and how to follow progress. More info at www.guidinggolden.com/strategic-action-plan.
WHEN:
*New Dates for 2023Coming Soon!
Meetings will be held inperson (in the new year) on the first Saturday of each month at 10 a.m.
If you'd prefer to join virtually, visit www.cityofgolden.net/ coffee. Bring your own coffee!
WHERE: (in 2023) Golden Community Center, Front Porch (upstairs) 1470 10th St., Golden
WHY: Join your neighbors, councilors, city staff and volunteers for an open discussion.
Happy Holidays! December is filled with holiday spirit here in Golden and around the world with so many different global celebrations this month. Our Golden community includes residents from many different places, and I enjoy learning and sharing different cultural traditions with families and friends here in our community. Your family tradition may include Christmas or Hanukkah, perhaps Kwanzaa or Las Posadas, maybe Boxing Day or Omisoka, or perhaps you have a special Winter Solstice or Festivus celebration for your family tradition. Most places around the world recognize New Year’s Eve, and while we may have different ways to celebrate, we can collectively mark the passing of 2022 and welcome in 2023. There are so many reasons and opportunities to get together with family and friends this month to bring some warmth and brightness during this time of year.
I also recognize that for some in the community, December and the holiday season is a challenging time. The opportunities for fellowship and community gathering are here if you feel up to it. The City sponsors community-wide events and there are numerous local organizations, businesses, and community groups that are welcoming and invite others to participate.
One of the community-wide events that Golden embraces is our unique holiday tradition of the Candlelight Walk. While the event has changed over the years, there are a lot more battery-operated candles than actual flames now, but the connection of community and bringing a little brightness to a cold December night remains the same. Seeing thousands of Goldenites walking down the hill holding lights and spending this time together is my favorite event of the year.
A new tradition that began in 2020 is back this year as part of the ongoing Candlelight Nights. The Season of Lights Storyboard Walk invites everyone to get out for a walk along the creek for some exercise and outdoor enjoyment while also learning about other cultures and traditions from around the world.
Many holiday traditions around the world include sharing, caring, and spreading joy not just for our own families but for others as well. Goldenites are generous year-round and most especially at the end of the year. Whether it is a financial contribution to a local organization on the Colorado Day of Giving or a donation of your time and talents to help with a meal or a gift for those in need, we give from our hearts which makes for a better community for all.
If one of your traditions during the holiday season is to exchange gifts, remember the amazing, locally owned businesses we have right here in Golden. Shopping can be fun for the whole family when you come out for the Olde Golden Holiday Parade on Dec.10 or the Jingle on the Avenue on Dec. 17. Shopping local helps our businesses remain strong and gives you the opportunity to find something truly unique and special.
I wish you and your families the happiest of holidays and best wishes for the new year.

The Breakfast Optimist Club of Golden will be selling Christmas trees this year in the parking lot of U.S. Bank at 1801 Jackson Street. The lot will be open until the trees are gone. A variety of sizes and species have been ordered from a quality tree farm in Michigan. There will also be fresh wreaths. Helpful Scouts will freshen up and load your tree. These real trees can be recycled at the end of the season.
Funds raised at this event will be used in the community to support Optimists programs, such as providing school supplies to local schools, contributing to local food banks, hosting an annual high school oratorical contest, supporting the Golden Optimist Club’s Bicycle Recycle Program, and sponsoring Boy Scout Troop 329. To learn more, visit GoldenOptimist.org.

Every month, we’ll be highlighting a business here in the City of Golden.
This month in the City of Golden business spotlight, we spoke with Jeff Steinhoff, owner of The Alpine House, located at Morris & Mae Market, 18475 W. Colfax Ave., Ste. 132 in Golden. For more information, visit www.morrisandmae.com/alpine-house
If you’re a local business owner who is interested in getting access to more information about local economic development or want to be featured in upcoming issues of the Golden Informer, please reach out to the City of Golden’s Economic Development Manager Robin Fleischmann at rfleischmann@cityofgolden.net.
The Alpine House started about a year ago, working in the early mornings, making breakfast burritos from a ghost kitchen in the Golden area. We marketed our services to businesses and organizations that could utilize early morning breakfast options, delivered freshly made and always hot.
The Alpine House is now partnering with a new food market in Golden--Morris & Mae Bar & Food Hall. We will serve an expanded breakfast menu while adding an evening menu for our dinner guests and bar patrons.
My heart is tied to Golden. I moved to Golden as a young man, joined the fire department, and spent 19 years as a first responder. You get to know the city well as a first responder. I fell in love, married my wife Kristin, and raised five kids in Golden. Could there be a better location? Easy choice for me.
While we continue to improve and expand our services daily, Alpine House plans to introduce our second venture, Adventure Foods. Adventure Foods consists of prepackaged, vacuum-sealed meals for camping, back-packing, etc. We plan to offer a line of traditional meals and custom-made recipes for our customers. For those afternoon adventurers, we will be offering picnic basket options.
Winter is just around the corner and the Golden Streets Division has your safety in mind. When winter storms hit the Golden area, snowplows concentrate first on primary streets such as S. Golden Road, Johnson Road, Washington Avenue, Ford Street, and 19th Street. These are the areas with higher traffic volume and the main roads needed for emergency vehicles to access different parts of town.
Once all primary streets are deemed passable, city crews move on to secondary and then residential streets. Golden is one of the only cities in the metro area that plows primary, secondary, and residential streets.
To view the City of Golden’s entire Snow and Ice Control Plan, visit www.cityofgolden.net/streets. Maps of the snow removal routes can be found on this page as well.
Once the holidays are over, those of you who bought live trees will want to get it (and all the falling needles!) out of your home. The City of Golden has an easy way for you to get rid of your tree, and help give it a second life by turning it into mulch. Drop off your trees from Dec. 26 through Jan. 27 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the former Golden Recycle site, just west of Hwy 93 and north of Golden Gate Canyon Road. Please leave trees at the south end of the site; there will be a sign there for tree recycling.
Trees must be stripped of all ornaments, hardware, strings of lights, and tinsel. Only live Christmas trees will be accepted. Wreaths, tree branches or other wood material will NOT be accepted. The trees will be turned into mulch, which will eventually be available for free at the public pickup site on 11th Street, just west of the Clear Creek History Park. For further details, contact the City of Golden Forestry office at 303-384-8141.
The Rotary Club of Golden wants to make sure no child is left without a gift this holiday season, and their “Miracle Shop” allows struggling families to experience the magic of the holiday season. The Miracle Shop is an annual ‘pop up’ event at the Calvary Church where families experiencing financial hardship can shop for new and slightly loved toys for their children at garage sale prices. For anyone who has the means to donate to The Miracle Shop, your generosity is needed. You can donate in person, or shop for toys online (Amazon Wish List) by visiting www.themiracleshop. org. You can also drop toys off at the Miracle Toy Drive (see details below). Pick-up of items can also be arranged and tax deductible cash donations are always welcome. After collecting gifts in early December, the Miracle Shop will be open for parents to shop from Dec. 14 - 16, Calvary Church, 1320 Arapahoe Street.
Join thousands of Coloradans to support local nonprofits on Tuesday, Dec. 6 for Colorado Gives Day. This annual statewide movement celebrates and increases philanthropy in Colorado through online giving. Please consider donating to one or more of our local Golden nonprofits. Visit ColoradoGivesDay.org and search for nonprofits that are in Golden and/or benefit our city. You don’t have to wait to donate through the website--you can also schedule a donation in advance.

Do you have broken, burned-out or impossibly tangled sets of holiday lights stored away with last year’s holiday decorations? Recycle them for free at Action Recycling Center in Wheat Ridge where string lights are not only accepted for recycling, but they are also currently paying 10 cents per pound for the value of the scrap metal in the lights. Take a trip to Action Recycling; they’re open weekdays from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. - 4 p.m.
Starting on January 1, 2023, stores across Colorado will begin charging 10 cents per plastic or paper bag as part of a statewide effort to reduce waste associated with single use products. Certain exceptions apply such as small stores, pharmacies and food assistance programs. The new rules, passed by the Colorado legislature in 2021, include actions in later years which will ban plastic bags and polystyrene (Styrofoam) takeout containers statewide starting in 2024. Pro tip: keep two sets of reusable bags, one in the car and one in the house and never forget your bags again.
Whether you love it or hate it, the game Monopoly is one of the most recognizable names in board games. Sold by Charles Darrow to Parker Brothers in 1935, the gameplay consists of players attempting to purchase the most properties and drive other players to bankruptcy. As the name implies, players are trying to create monopolies by owning chunks of neighboring properties along the board. Interestingly however, Landlord’s Game, the game from which Monopoly originates, was actually an antimonopoly game, created by Elizabeth Phillips (née Magie) and patented more than 30 years earlier. Her game had two sets of rules that could be used: one where all players benefitted when wealth was created and one where players created monopolies while trying to bankrupt others. Phillips was paid just $500 for the patent rights to her game.
Ultimately, Monopoly became a huge hit. It has localized editions for 103 countries around the world and is translated into 37 languages. This is where the Museum’s copy of Golden Hometown Monopoly comes in. This 1983 game, published by Milco (not Parker Brothers), capitalized on the other game’s popularity and used real local businesses to fill the board. Also made for as many as 500 other towns, Golden’s version has some very familiar names including Woods Mortuary, Meyer Home Center, Inc. (the hardware store’s name at the time), and Carleen of Golden. More information on those three businesses, as well as a complete company listing from the game, are found at www.GoldenHistory. org/blog. Did you ever have a copy of this game? We’d love to hear your memories of Golden Hometown Monopoly at www.GoldenHistory.org/contact.
