SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

From the Mayor Hello, Lansing! This citywide publication combines the Lansing Parks & Recreation Activities Guide, the Capital Area Recycling & Trash (CART) Greensheet, and other important information. While overcoming the pandemic has had its challenges, I am committed to growing our city and coming out stronger, and Lansing Living is a big part of that. In this issue of the publication, you will find a variety of fun and safe activities for our youth, adults and seniors, all happening here in Lansing. From swim classes, to exercise programs, to upcoming events and more, the Parks and Recreation Department offers just about something for everyone.

lansingmi.gov | WINTER 2022 | 2

RESOURCES

COMMUNITY RESOURCES ACCESSIBLE OPPORTUNITIES - 517-483-6074 Lansing Parks and Recreation accepts registrations from all people regardless of skills or abilities. Those individuals who may require accommodation or assistance are encouraged to call the program site or program coordinator two or three weeks before the start of the program. Staff will contact you and make arrangements for reasonable accommodations. The City of Lansing encourages all citizens of our community, including those with disabilities, to participate in recreational programming. Questions may be directed to the Manager of Leisure Services.

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY - 517-483-4477 OR 517-483-4479 (TDD) The City of Lansing provides services and employment on an equal opportunity basis without regard to religion, race, color, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, height, weight, arrest record or handicap. Any questions regarding this may be directed to the Human Relations and Community Services Department.

PARKS & RECREATION PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS Lansing residents under the age of 18 who meet Federal HUD low-income guidelines for the Lansing area are eligible for partial scholarships for Parks and Recreation sponsored programs. Applicants will be asked to show proof of income and proof of residency. Scholarships do not cover team fees, supply costs, out-of-town trips, one-day activities or activities not sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. A co-payment is required at the time of application. Visit any community center or the main Parks and Recreation office for information and applications. Call 517-483-4277 for more information.

SAVE YOUR MONEY. BORROW OUR TOOLS. Do you know someone who has an eviction or a poor rental or credit history that is keeping them from finding quality and affordable housing? The City of Lansing sponsors a free program called Rent Smart that can help overcome these barriers. Rent Smart is an intensive interactive workshop that focuses on the knowledge and skills essential for a successful renting experience. It challenges participants to know and understand their rights and responsibilities as well as that of their landlord. Emphasis is on forming a strong partnership between the tenant and landlord, understanding key terms in the lease, how to handle maintenance requests, and budgeting, among other things. This program, developed by the University of Wisconsin, consists of four 2-hour weekly sessions and will help in establishing a positive rental history and starts participants on the path for success. For more information or to register, please call the Office of Housing Ombudsman Joe McDonald at 517-483-4019 or visit lansingmi.gov/housingombudsman.

The City of Lansing is working to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and ultimately lower our carbon footprint. We are encouraging businesses, households and others to do the same! More information can be at lansingmi.gov/ sustainability.

The BWL offers free services to income qualified residents. For more information, please visit lbwl.com/hometownhelp. • Consider updating old appliances – BWL and Consumers Energy provide rebates and other incentives. For more information, please visit lbwl.com/applicances or consumersenergy.com/residential/save-money-and-energy/ rebates/applicance-rebates. • Consider upgrading an old furnace, air conditioner, windows and other less efficient parts of your home – “green” financing is available through Michigan Saves and they can help you find a local contractor and work with utilities to get you the rebates that you qualify for. These measures can save you money in the long run by making your home more energy efficient. For more information please visit michigansaves.org. lansingmi.gov | WINTER 2022 | 18

BULK COLLECTION

• Large items over 30 pounds and longer than 4 feet such as appliances and furniture are considered bulk waste. The cost to have these picked up from the curbside is $33.00 for the first item. Additional items are $16.50/each. • This is a non-refundable fee. There are no longer trash stickers. Instead, simply pay in advance of your scheduled bulk collection day and place your item at the curb by that time. • To request bulk collection, please visit: lansingmi.gov/trash.

CHRISTMAS TREE AND HOLIDAY WASTE DISPOSAL After the holidays, there is generally an increase in waste. CART encourages residents to use the following tips to reduce waste and properly dispose of items: • Please break down cardboard boxes that result from online shopping and place them either inside of or next to your green recycling cart. • Please do NOT recycle wrapping paper. Instead, throw it away in your blue trash cart or consider a gift wrap alternative such as newspaper, artwork, reusable bag, etc. • Use real dishes, glasses and cloth napkins instead of paper cups, plates and disposable products. • Consider giving gifts that don’t result in unwanted waste such as gift cards, organizational donations, etc. Christmas trees will be collected starting the week of January 3, 2022, through the week of January 10, 2022. • Trees should be placed at the curbside like normal • All bags, decorations and other materials MUST be removed from the tree for it to be collected • Trees that are taller than six feet MUST be cut in half to be collected lansingmi.gov | WINTER 2022 | 22

MINECRAFT MODDING QUEST

CODING WITH ROBLOX STUDIO

Does your child enjoy playing Minecraft? Minecraft: Education Edition is built on top of the regular Minecraft game and includes additional features to teach kids coding and other STEM skills. It promotes creativity, collaboration, and problem-solving in an immersive environment, where the only limit is imagination.

Does your child love Roblox? There are 40 million games on Roblox and enjoying Roblox is a great way for friends to hang out together. So why not go from playing to learning and creating, while having just as much fun? Take a big step forward with your Roblox experience by actually creating your own games! In this unique live interactive class, students will learn how to use Roblox Studio to create customized worlds and code mini-games.

FEES: $225/PERSON

FEES: $180/PERSON

In these carefully designed classes, we cover a broad set of coding concepts. We start by introducing kids to the very basic concepts of stacking commands together to make computers accomplish tasks - the fundamentals of coding. Kids will control agents to solve puzzles while interacting with different in-game characters. We will then move on to learn core coding concepts such as loop, operations, conditional, events, function, variables, and more. As students get more comfortable with these coding skills, they will also start building more complex structures as well as mini-games through coding. With our inquiry-based approach, your kids will have plenty of opportunities to not only learn but also create! Level: Intermediate (7-10 yrs. old) Prerequisites: For students who are new to coding, we recommend taking Scratch Ninja 1 & 2 first before this class. Requirements: Students must have a laptop or desktop device with Zoom, a Chrome browser, and high internet connectivity. Windows or Mac Computer (Chromebook is not supported) Class Code

For students who already have some experience with block-based coding systems such as Scratch, Roblox Studio is a great next step. Here, through a combination of configuring and scripting/coding, your child can create their own game world using a built-in 3D design tool and coding the interactions with the world. Coding is done via Lua, a scripting language that is relatively easy to use. The course starts with simple coding concepts such as loop and conditional to get students familiar with text-based coding, and gradually goes deeper to more advanced concepts such as variables, arrays, and more. It is entirely project-based, as we will be building fun games throughout. Prerequisites: Requires familiarity of fundamental coding concepts (though block-based coding such as Scratch is fine). If your child is new to coding, take Scratch coding and or Minecraft Modding Quest classes first. Requirements: Students must have a laptop or desktop device with Zoom, a Chrome browser, and high internet connectivity. Need Windows or Mac computers (no Chromebook), and a mechanical mouse.
