I’d dare to make more mistakes next time.fI’d Relax.fI would limber up.fI would be sillier than I have been this trip.fI would take fewer thing seriously.fI would take more chances. I would take more trips.fI would climb more mountains and swim more rivers.fI would eat more ice cream and less beans.fI would perhaps have more actual troubles, but fewer imaginary ones.fYou see, I’m one of those people who live sensibly and sanely hour after hour, day after day.fOh, I’ve had my moments.fIf I had to do it over again, I’d have more of them.fIn fact, I’d try to have nothing else.fJust moments, one after another, instead of living so many years ahead of each day.fI’ve been one of those persons who never goes anywhere without a thermometer, a hot water bottle, a raincoat, and a parachute.fIf I could do it again, I would travel lighter than I have.fIf I had my life to live over, I would start barefoot earlier in the spring and stay that way later in the fall.fI would go to more dances.fI would ride more By Nadine Stair & Elizabeth Lucas merry-go-rounds.fI would pick more daisies.

Adult coloring books, pencils and markers are available at most stores around town and come in a variety of themes: Mandalas, Nature, Floral, Animals, Celtic, Art Deco and so much more! This would be a great way to socialize and meet new friends with similar interests! DID YOU KNOW.. The top seven benefits of coloring for adults include: 1. The brain experiences relief by entering a meditative state 2. Stress and anxiety levels, as well as pain, have the potential to be lowered 3. Negative thoughts are expelled as you take in positivity 4. Focusing on the present helps achieve mindfulness 5. Unplugging from technology promotes creation over consumption 6. Coloring can be done by anyone, not just artists or creative types 7. It’s a hobby that can be taken with you wherever you go In the U.S., bingo was originally called “beano”. It was a country fair game where a dealer would select numbered discs from a cigar box and players would mark their cards with beans. They yelled “beano” if they won. The game’s history can be traced back to 1530, to an Italian lottery called “Lo Gluoco del Lotto D’Italia,” which is still played every Saturday in Italy. From Italy, the game was introduced to France in the late 1770s, where it was called “Le Lotto,” a game played among wealthy Frenchmen. The Germans also played a version of the game in the 1800s, but they used it as a child’s game to help students learn math, spelling and history. When the game reached North America in 1929, it became known as “beano”. It was first played at a carnival near Atlanta, Georgia. New York toy salesman Edwin S. Lowe renamed it “bingo” after he overheard someone accidentally yell “bingo” instead of “beano”. He hired a Columbia University math professor, Carl Leffler, to help him increase the number of combinations in bingo cards. By 1930, Leffler had invented 6,000 bingo cards. It is said that Leffler then went insane. A Catholic priest from Pennsylvania approached Lowe about using bingo as means of raising church funds. When bingo started being played in churches, it became increasingly popular. By 1934, an estimated 10,000 bingo games were played weekly, and today, more than $90 million dollars are spent on bingo each week in North America alone. Please let us know if you are interested in participating in Sunday activities, beginning in the Fall. Second Sunday activities were cancelled over the summer months, due to low attendance in the winter/ spring. If we do not have enough people who are interested in attending, Sunday activities may not take place.
Senior Center BINGO The Senior Center offers bingo: Wednesdays @ 1:00pm Breakfast Bingo—Fridays @ 9:30am Birthday Bingo—Last Mon. @ 1:00pm Cards are $.50 each, with a limit of four. All participants must be members of the Senior Center or have purchased a guest pass at the desk. See page 8 for more information.

Parents everywhere are rejoicing! August marks the end of summer and the beginning of a new school year for kids. This year, the Manitowoc Public School district has lengthened their school days for the elementary schools, much to the disappointment of most students. As kids are getting ready for back to school, please keep in mind that speed limits in school zones are 15 mph when children are present. As a reminder, the Senior Center collects Box Tops for Education and Milk Moola caps for schools. Please be all milk caps are clean and have the Milk Moola logo on them.
18 FEEL GOOD! Volunteer with AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Program! Help people and give your mind a workout too! We are happy to announce the return of the AARP Manitowoc County Tax-Aide Program to the Manitowoc Senior Center for the 2017 Tax Season! However, we NEED your HELP! We are looking for Volunteers to help out this coming tax season: We could use two greeters and one or more preparers! Are you good with numbers? Become a Tax Preparer! Preparers work with taxpayers directly; filling out tax returns and helping them seek a refund. Experience isn't necessary — AARP will train you on the latest tax preparation forms and software. What does this mean for you? It would mean a commitment of six days of training plus Friday mornings during the tax season (Feb – April 15). Training for new tax preparers is held in Green Bay and will consist of two days each in the months of Nov., Dec., & Jan. AARP does reimburse for mileage. Preparers would be trained and become IRSCertified to prepare simple State and Federal returns as well as Homestead Credit Claims. Love working with People? Become a Greeter! Greeters welcome taxpayers, help organize their paperwork, manage the overall flow of service. Training for greeters includes reading a booklet and taking a simple five question test. The duties of a greeter include checking paperwork prior to appointments to insure that they have all documents needed. Does this sound interesting to you? Do you have time to give? It’s important to know, experience is NOT necessary! We will train and mentor you! When you become a volunteer of AARP Tax-Aide, your expertise will be appreciated more than you could ever imagine! Get the joy and satisfaction of helping out by becoming a AARP Tax-Aide Volunteer TODAY! Interested? Please contact the Manitowoc Senior Center at 686-3060! We will forward your information to our Tax-Aide representatives who will get you started! GET INVOLVED—GIVE BACK—FEEL GOOD! The answer is c. If 20 men pull on the rope (10 on each end), the stress on the rope will be no greater than if 10 pulled from one end and the other was tied to a tree. The tension on a rope is no greater than the pull at one of its ends.
19 Introducing the newest class available to members of the Manitowoc Senior Center: Chair YOGA! MONDAYS at 1:30pm in the North Assembly Room. Starting Monday, August 1st at 1:30pm. Join anytime. $4/mth (members only) Anyone of any level can participate in a chair yoga class. Some students may need to stay seated the entire time, while others will do standing poses using the chair for balance. Class will be one hour in length. The teacher provides options whenever possible, and when something arises which you cannot do, simply imagining the movement will be beneficial. The goals are to learn something new (about yoga or about yourself) each class, and to leave feeling refreshed and peaceful. This class will be taught by one of our newest members, Jean Dasgupta. Jean enjoys sharing her love of yoga with her students. Her classes promote the development of inner awareness while strengthening, stretching, paying attention to the breath, and to alignment. She has practiced yoga for 18 years and, in 2014, completed her teacher training program (a Yoga Alliance-registered program) at Sun and Moon Yoga Studio in Virginia. Before moving to Manitowoc in spring, she taught at the yoga studio, and at two senior centers in VA. (She thanks Jean Wolfmeyer for priming her, decades ago, for yoga.) *Class length is one hour. PRE-REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY. Please stop by the front desk to register!

Tai Chi, often referred to “meditation in motion”, is a low-impact, slow-motion exercise, where muscles are relaxed and joints are not fully extended or bent, and connective tissues are not stretched. Tai Chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit, to people confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery. Although Tai Chi is slow and gentle and doesn’t leave you breathless, it addresses the key components of fitness— muscle strength, flexibility, balance, and, to a lesser degree, aerobic conditioning. A NEW Beginner Tai Chi class will meet every Tuesday and Thursday afternoon at 2:55pm beginning Tue, September 6th. Sign up now at the front desk. Cost is $4/month. Participants can only start up to the 3rd week of class. *Available to members only. A special Tai Chi graduation class will be held at the Aurora Hospital Healing Gardens (weather permitting) Sunday, August 28. Instructor will provide details.

Good balance is important for fall prevention in seniors and the elderly. It requires the ability to keep your center of gravity over your ankles when standing and walking. As we go about our day we call on our body to keep us upright, maintain our equilibrium, anticipate obstacles and react to them, speed up and slow down, bend over and reach around corners. The benefit of the following two exercises will help strengthen your ankles and hips for greater ability to maintain your center of gravity and train your brain to become more aware of just where your center of gravity is located. The more we can practice stressing our balance systems, the more stable we will become. Give it a try! 1. The Single Limb Stance: Stand with feet together and arms at sides. Lift one leg and balance on the other. Hold for 10 seconds, then repeat with the other leg. Breathe normally. Use a chair to hold on to while standing. Hold on with two hands at first. Then try one hand. Then just one finger. Eventually as your balance improves, try to let go of the chair and balance without assistance. *Don't close your eyes or hold your breath. Raise your arm out to the side if you need more balance. 2. The Staggered Stance: Begin with feet together and hands at sides. Step forward with your right foot, bringing the heel of your right foot directly in front of and in contact with the toe of your left foot. Maintain this position for 10 seconds. Alternate putting the other foot in front. Breathe normally, in through the nose and out through the mouth. Lift chest and look at the wall eye level. Hold on to a chair if needed. Practice with tape on the floor for more accuracy. * As with any exercise program, always check with your doctor before beginning a new exercise or routine.

Ingredients 5 eggs 1 can (8oz) Pillsbury refrigerated crescent dinner rolls 8 fully cooked breakfast sausage links 4 slices Cheddar Cheese Salt and Pepper to taste
22
Directions 1. Heat oven to 350 degrees. In small bowl, beat eggs. Reserve 2 tablespoons beaten egg for brushing on tops of crescent rolls. Scramble remaining eggs. 2. Unroll dough onto work surface; separate into 8 triangles. Cut cheese slices in half; place one half on each triangle. Top with spoonful of scrambled eggs and a sausage link. Loosely roll up triangles as directed on can; place on ungreased cookie sheet. 3. Brush reserved beaten egg on top of each crescent. Sprinkle salt and pepper over each. 4. Bake 15-18 minutes or until golden brown. Ingredients 1/2 cup salted butter, melted 1 large egg 1/2 cup granulated sugar 1/3 cup light brown sugar, packed 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup all-purpose flour 1/4 teaspoon cream of tartar 1/4 teaspoon salt, optional and to taste Directions Batter: 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line an 8x8 baking pan with aluminum foil, spray with cooking spray; set aside. 2. In a large microwave safe bowl melt the butter 3. Wait momentarily before adding the egg so you don’t scramble it. Add the egg, sugars, vanilla, and whisk until smooth. 4. Add the flour, cream of tartar, optional salt and stir until just combined, don’t over mix. 5. Turn batter out into prepared pan, smoothing the top lightly with a spatula; set aside. For Sprinkling: 1. In a bowl (same one used for the batter is okay) combine the sugar, cinnamon, and stir. 2. Using a small spoon, evenly sprinkle cinnamon-sugar mixture over the prepared pan. Looks like a lot but it sinks down and soaks in while baking. 3. Bake for about 24-25 minutes or until done. A toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean, or with a few moist crumbs, but no batter. Place pan on top of a wire rack to cool for at least 15 minutes before slicing and serving. Bars will keep airtight at room temperature for up to 1 week, or in the freezer for up to 6 months.
