Thank you to those who took the time to update their emergency contacts with us. If you have not done so, please either stop at the desk or call to update your emergency contacts, which we keep on file. Thanks to a donation, the Senior Center now has audiobooks (books on CD), available for our members to check out from the library. The audiobooks are located by the DVD library in the TV room. Over the next few months, we are going to share “50 Reasons to get out of bed in the morning”, a fun little book created by the staff of Silver Lake College in the 1980’s. As you read the reasons, you may wonder what, exactly, is an aarpie? An aarpie is ageless, but really anyone age 50 and older, anyone who may be a member of AARP. “Aarpie” means, active, ambitious, resourceful people in existence, or you! Enjoy! Exercise your brain; don’t let it get mushy. Your brain needs constant exercise. Keep it stimulated. Don’t let it relax too much or it may decide it would like a steady vacation. You may have to start slowly, but—when you get the hang of it—brain exercises are fun. Pick a particular topic: read about it, talk about it, think about it. Pretty soon you will want to find out more about that topic, and ...you’re hooked! Your brain will be so busy getting exercised that there will barely be enough minutes in the day for other accomplishments. So, aarpie beware...this is only the beginning to a wonderfully productive period of your life.
Keep in contact with the world around you. Social contacts are very important— vital, in fact. Pick up the phone and call a friend or a relative. Pick up the window and call a friend. Just make a concentrated effort to make regular contact with a number of people whose company you enjoy, or whom you think you’d like to know better. Your days will always be brighter when you know you can share them with others. You’ll be so eager to start your day because of your relationships—the old ones that you treasure and the new ones you anticipate

17 Sometimes called "Chinese shadow boxing," Tai Chi is a gentle form of martial arts and exercise that involves a formal series of flowing, graceful, slow-motion movements designed to harmonize the circulation of "chi" around the body. Tai Chi can serve as a healthy form of low-impact exercise which can help to develop strength, balance and flexibility. Tai Chi is a healthy form of movement, especially for those with osteoarthritis or other musculoskeletal impairments. It can build core strength and improve lower limb musculature, as well as improve posture, balance, flexibility, and mobility. Tai Chi can assist in relaxation and focus, even while executing the moves, and synchronize the musculoskeletal and nervous systems. It helps to develop concentration and coordination, and can help reduce the risk of falls for the elderly. Because it promotes calming and relaxation, Tai Chi can be useful for conditions caused or worsened by stress and anxiety, such as hypertension, pain syndromes brought on by muscle tension and insomnia. 16. A new Beginners Tai Chi class will be starting on Tuesday, March 1, 2016. Cost is $4 per month. Members Only. Beginner’s Tai Chi Classes are held each Tuesday and Thursday 2:55p-3:55p. This is a progressive class; therefore, new participants will be allowed to join the class within the first two weeks only. After that time, you will be added to an interest list for the next beginner’s class, which will begin toward the end of summer.
I’m the life of the party...even if it lasts until 8pm. I’m usually interested in going home before I get to where I am going. I’m awake many hours before my body allows me to get up. I’m smiling all the time because I can’t hear a thing you’re saying. I’m very good at telling stories; over and over and over and over… I’m aware that other people’s grandchildren are not as cute as mine. I’m very good at opening childproof caps...with a hammer. I’m so cared for—long term care, eye care, private care, dental care. I’m not grouchy, I just don’t like traffic, waiting, crowds, politicians. I’m sure everything I can’t find is in a secure place. I’m wrinkled, saggy, lumpy, and that’s just my left leg. I’m having trouble remembering simple words like… I’m a walking storeroom of facts...I’ve just lost the key to the storeroom door. I’m realizing that aging is not for wimps. I’m sure they are making adults much younger these days, and when did they let kids become policemen. I’m wondering, if you’re only as old as you feel, how could I be alive at 150?

LIFE LESSONS WRITTEN BY A “90 YEAR OLD” WOMAN
19
People often tell Regina Brett how great she looks for her age. Turns out, she is actually in her 50s — not 90. She wrote down these life lessons the night before her 45th birthday after being diagnosed with breast cancer. Over the past decade, these lessons have gone viral on the Internet amid claims that she is 90 years old. Luckily, she finds humor in this misrepresentation, knowing how many lives she has touched. Whatever her age might be, these universal lessons are relatable to anyone who needs a little reminder of what's important in life. Life isn't fair, but it's still good. When in doubt, just take the next small step. Life is too short to waste time hating anyone. Don't take yourself so seriously. No one else does. 5. Pay off your credit cards every month. 6. You don't have to win every argument. Agree to disagree. 7. Cry with someone. It's more healing than crying alone. 8. Save for retirement, starting with your first paycheck. 9. When it comes to chocolate, resistance is futile. 10. Make peace with your past so it won't screw up the present. 11. It's OK to let your children see you cry. 12. Don't compare your life to others'. You have no idea what their journey is all about. 13. If a relationship has to be a secret, you shouldn't be in it. 14. Life is too short for long pity parties. Get busy living, or get busy dying. 15. You can get through anything if you stay put in today. 16. A writer writes. If you want to be a writer, write. 17. It's never too late to have a happy childhood. But the second one is up to you and no one else. 18. When it comes to going after what you love in life, don't take no for an answer. 19. Burn the candles; use the nice sheets; wear the fancy lingerie. Don't save it for a special occasion. Today is special. 20. Over-prepare, then go with the flow. 21. Be eccentric now. Don't wait for old age to wear purple. 22. The most important sex organ is the brain. 23. No one is in charge of your happiness except you. 24. Frame every so-called disaster with these words: "In five years, will this matter?" 25. Forgive everyone, everything. 26. What other people think of you is none of your business. 1. 2. 3. 4.
27. Time heals almost everything. Give time time. 28. However good or bad a situation is, it will change. 29. Your job won't take care of you when you are sick. Your friends will. Stay in touch. 30. Believe in miracles. 31. Whatever doesn't kill you really does make you stronger. 32. Growing old beats the alternative — dying young. 33. Your children get only one childhood. Make it memorable. 34. Get outside every day. Miracles are waiting every where. 35. If we all threw our problems in a pile and saw every one else's, we'd grab ours back. 36. Don't audit life. Show up and make the most of it now. 37. Get rid of anything that isn't useful, beautiful or joyful. 38. All that truly matters in the end is that you loved. 39. Envy is a waste of time. You already have all you need. 40. The best is yet to come. 41. No matter how you feel, get up, dress up, and show up. 42. Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. 43. If you don't ask, you don't get. 44. Yield. 45. Life isn't tied with a bow, but it's still a gift.

20 EXERCISE OF THE MONTH Bent Over Row Shoulder and back exercises like bent over rows, will help your upper body regain the strength you need to perform your daily activities like lifting a bag a sugar, emptying the trash, opening a stubborn refrigerator door or unclogging the sink! The purpose of this lift is to strengthen your upper arm and back. It improves your ability to pull and lift and increases shoulder range of motion. Here’s how it’s done….. 1. Stand, leaning over a chair, table or bench. Hold the weight in one arm while supporting yourself on the chair, table or bench with the other arm. 2. Take a breath in and exhale as you pull the weight up to your chest, raising your elbow behind you to shoulder height, palm facing the body. Keep your arm & elbow close to the ribs and return to the starting position. 4. Remember to breath. Exhale during the upward motion and inhale on the downward motion. 5. Keep back and shoulders even; parallel to the floor. Rx: Do 10 repetitions each arm. Work up to 3 sets.

We are happy to introduce our newest addition to the fitness room This is a low impact form of exercise which means less stress on your knees, hips and back. It’s a great way to increase aerobic capacity and work the whole body all at once. Don’t be intimidated. It may take a few minutes to get used to it, but once you’re up and ‘running’ you’ll love it. Ask for a demo at the front desk today!

The Lakeshore Red Hatters meet the 2nd Friday of every month at the Manitowoc Senior Center at 1:30 p.m. All ladies are welcome. Audrey Behnke, Kathy Fischer and Mary Ann Preston were the hostesses. They served Pizza and delicious desserts.. The program was the movie Walk the Line. The hostesses for March are Betty Heinzen, Ann Smaglik and Charlotte Sobel. Berdeva wants everyone to wear green clothes with our red hats. The March luncheon will be at Applebees on Thursday March 24th at 11:30. As most of you know, we have had some tragic news these last few weeks. Sharon Bruckschen, Mary Ann Preston and Denise Beyer have lost their husbands. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. We have also have some good news. Gloria Mankin is now Mrs. John Reis. Congratulations Gloria and John. We will have a place setting display this year at the Rahr West Museum. Anybody who wants to help is welcome. There were eight Lakeshore Red Hatters and four Green Bay Red Hatters at the Victorian Tea. The program was the life of Helen Keller. It was very entertaining and educational. The picture here is of the Red Hatters who attended. Some of us are thinking of forming a group of Red Hatters who would go and visit our fellow Red Hatters that are in nursing homes or in rehab. We will discuss it at the next meeting. I will have list of possible programs for our teas at the March tea. Funny Bone Ticklers A second grader came home from school and said to her Red Hatter grandmother, “Grandma, guess what? We learned how to make babies today.” The grandmother, more than a little stunned, tried to keep her cool. ”That’s interesting, “ she said. “How do you make babies?” “It’s simple, “ replied the second grader. “You just change the “y” to “i” and add “es”.” Have a great Red Hat day, Terry Prigge

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring "the Martian" home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney's safe return.
