Have you thought about volunteering in the Library and would like to know more about it? Our current librarian will be holding a meeting on Wednesday, May 19th at 10am to explain what is involved in being a library volunteer! This includes shelf reading (using a step stool and being able to stoop) and using a typewriter to type out new cards and inventory new books. Flexible days & hours!!

A big “thank you” to all who participated in our tornado drill on Thursday, April 13. Everyone did great in getting to the designated tornado shelters (interior rooms without windows). One thing to remember, however, in the event of severe whether, time is of the essence. Please be sure to get to shelters as quickly as possible. Additionally, please be sure to help those who may need assistance, evacuate to the appropriate shelters. It is extremely important that in the event of severe weather, everyone is safe. Again thank you to those who participated, and thank you to the Manitowoc Fire Department for assisting us with the drill. Those without access to adequate shelter may go to the following City of Manitowoc Fire Department locations during a severe thunderstorm or tornado warning: Station 1, 911 Franklin Street; Station 2, 1410 N. 8th Street; Station 3, 3823 Dewey Street; Station 4, 1225 Fleetwood Drive.

Enjoy “50 Reasons to get out of bed in the morning”, a fun little book created by the staff of Silver Lake College in the 1980’s. As you read the reasons, you may wonder what, exactly, is an aarpie? An aarpie is ageless, but really anyone age 50 and older, anyone who may be a member of AARP. “Aarpie” means, active, ambitious, resourceful people in existence, or you! Volunteer your time & expertise You are in a unique position. You can pick the kind of volunteer work in which you are interested and can develop your capabilities. When signing up as a volunteer, be available when they need you...not just when you feel like it. Volunteering brings rewards: friendships, satisfaction, and a development of self-esteem. To offer your services, check: hospitals, nursing homes, libraries, hospices, schools, civic organizations, daycare centers, literary councils, museums, art galleries and parks.

Learn new skills and embellish the old When it comes to finding skills, aarpies are veritable gold mines. When it comes to USING those skills productively, there’s a better than average chance that you held back from having your treasure tapped. Make a list of your talents. Establish what you are capable of doing and then decide to renew old skills and add new ones. Maybe that list will lead you to the library, school, or special interest classes. Try a couple of back-to-school classes in a variety of areas. The curriculum can be as classy or as casual and kooky as you choose. Who can predict where your own personal treasure hunt may lead? The prospect is exciting.

19 Gardening can be a very rewarding and therapeutic hobby. Not only can you benefit from the healthy fruits, herbs and vegetables, but it is also an emotionally rewarding hobby, which also contributes to our overall health and well-being. Container gardening has become more popular in recent years and is a great option for many to consider. As many seniors choose to downsize homes and enjoy a more active lifestyle, container gardening has become quite a hobby. In container gardening, plants, whether herbs, fruits or vegetables, are grown in smaller containers. Tomatoes do especially well in container gardens. These containers could be window boxes or even pots in the yard or on the patio. Supplies for container gardens can be picked up at nearly any hardware/home store. Just keep the following tips in mind: The bigger the container, the easier it will be to maintain, your planter should allow for proper drainage, and be sure to use a good quality soil. If you wish to grow larger vegetables, but don’t want a large garden and container gardening isn’t for you, then perhaps a raised garden bed would be a better option. Raised beds are larger plots of land, and can be sized based upon your growing needs. Raised beds can also be raised to any height of your choosing, which is especially good for seniors. If you don’t have the space for either a container garden or a raised bed, consider renting garden space from a community garden. Both Manitowoc and Two Rivers have community gardens available to area residents.

20 Instead of focusing on the physical body this month, let’s focus on our mind. This month we will practice

HOW DO I MEDITATE? 1. Choose your mantra. A word or phrase you repeat to yourself during meditation, to give you something to put your attention on other than your thoughts. Ex: Peace, Love, I am or ‘Om’ (means ‘it is’ or ‘to become’).

5 Reasons meditation is the ‘fountain of youth’ for the elderly! 1. Helps memory by stimulating the parts of the brain that store long and short term memory. 2. Makes the digestive system work better by improving circulation and blood oxygen enrichment with the deep breathing exercises. 3. Activates the happy part of the brain by stimulating the ‘feel-good’ brain region. 4. Sharpens and focuses the mind with increased mental alertness with synchronized left/right brain hemispheres. 5. Melts away stress, yielding many great benefits.

2. Find a comfortable, quiet place to sit where you will not be disrupted (a couch, chair, floor with your back against the wall). Sit as upright as possible while still being comfortable. 3. Gently close your eyes and begin to take deep cleansing breaths through your nose and out of your mouth, then continue to breathe through your nose at a normal relaxed pace, letting your belly rise and fall. 4. Begin repeating your mantra silently without moving your tongue or lips. 5. Do not try and stop your thoughts or empty your mind if you find your thoughts wonder, simply return to silently repeating your mantra. 6. Stop repeating mantra after 20-30 min. If that is too long, start with whatever time you can. Even a little bit is beneficial.
