On May 16, Senior Center participants embarked on a fantastic Mystery Trip! Thankfully, the weather was cooperative and the day turned out to be beautiful for an exciting boat tour of the Horicon Marsh, narrated by some very knowledgeable tour guides. After the boat tour and a home-style lunch in the area, the group headed to the Cristo Rey Rach in Mt. Calvary. There the group enjoyed some more time outdoors with a hayride, and a chance to visit with the plethora of animals that the ranch houses. Even better, as it was early spring, there was many baby animals to visit with! For those of you who are unfamiliar with Cristo Rey Ranch, it is a skilled nursing & assisted living facility, and a weekend respite for children who reside in foster care. The Ranch has many varieties of animals, both farm and domesticated, which are used for pet therapy and help to create a positive environment for residents, guests, and associates. The foster children who come on the weekends also help care for the animals on the ranch. Everyone had a great time! If you are interested in learning about the history of our wonderful Senior Center, you may want to stop in the TV room (next to library) at the Center and look through all the old scrapbooks/pictures we have put out. Back when the Senior Center was “younger”, people did a great job of documenting everything that was done here, from taking pictures of trips and parties, to scrapbooking all newspaper articles that had to the with the Center. We would love to share this history with you! Possibly, you may find pictures/ mentions of your parents, grand parents or old friend/neighbors! Please stop by and take a look, but please sign in on the sheet so we know who was here. Thank you!

Enjoy “50 Reasons to get out of bed in the morning”, a fun little book created by the staff of Silver Lake College in the 1980’s. Become a foster grandparent...There are many children lacking readily available grandparents; in some instances, none exist. What could be more rewarding than spending time and giving love to one or more children? It can easily lead to a parttime job in which your meals and transportation are paid and you are reimbursed for the hours you spend with the child (if you would like it to lead to that). But the real reimbursement—the important reward—is the satisfaction you’ll get from filling in where the need is great...and the personal return on the time you invest is even greater. Remember aarpie...all children need grandparents.

Become a foster adult child...How many times have you met aarpies who are hurting because they don’t have regular contact with their children? This is where you can step in, by stopping in. Make a friendly visit chat over a cup of coffee, shop together for groceries, or clothes, or other necessities, assist with little odd jobs around the house, remember birthdays and anniversaries, take a drive in the country...and on and on—you name it aarpie, and you can do it (or let them name it...and you can still do it!!). Get out from under the covers; find someone who needs you...maybe your parents aren’t around, so you need your foster parents just as much as they need you.

19 Introducing the newest class available to members of the Manitowoc Senior Center: Chair YOGA! MONDAYS at 1:30pm in the North Assembly Room. Two FREE Introductory Classes will be offered on Monday, July 18th and 25th at 1:30pm. Anyone of any level can participate in a chair yoga class. Some students may need to stay seated the entire time, while others will do standing poses using the chair for balance. Class will be 1hr in length. The teacher provides options whenever possible, and when something arises which you cannot do, simply imagining the movement will be beneficial. The goals are to learn something new (about yoga or about yourself) each class, and to leave feeling refreshed and peaceful. Regular classes will begin Mon. Aug. 1st at 1:30pm. This class will be taught by one of our newest members, Jean Dasgupta. Jean enjoys sharing her love of yoga with her students. Her classes promote the development of inner awareness while strengthening, stretching, paying attention to the breath, and to alignment. She has practiced yoga for 18 years and, in 2014, completed her teacher training program (a Yoga Alliance-registered program) at Sun and Moon Yoga Studio in Virginia. Before moving to Manitowoc in spring, she taught at the yoga studio, and at two senior centers in VA. (She thanks Jean Wolfmeyer for priming her, decades ago, for yoga.) Class is open to all center members. Cost will be $4/month beginning 1:30pm Mon., Aug. 1st . Free introductory classes will be held Monday, July 18th & 25th at 1:30pm. PRE-REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY. Please stop by the front desk to register!

20 EOTM: This movement will strengthen and tone the upper arm. For example, it will give you more power when using armrests to rise from a chair or bed. The triceps is the muscle that assists in extending your arm when reaching or raising your hand over your head to get something from a high shelf. Increased arm strength will also help in most of your daily activities including, holding groceries, opening doors, sweeping floors, and lifting your grandchildren! 1. If sitting, lean forward over your knees slightly. If standing, lean over a chair or table (as pictured) and hold a weight in your right hand. Bend your arm, bringing your elbow behind your and the weight to your chest, palm facing the body. 2. Keeping your upper arm and elbow stationary, straighten your arm bringing the weight behind you. Return to the starting position. The only part of your arm that should be moving is your forearm. Tips: It is important in this exercise to keep your elbows high during the backward movement. This will assure you optimal training in your triceps by keeping the shoulder still. Do not swing the weight. Move the weight with control at a moderate speed. Really squeeze at the top portion of the movement. *Try the exercise standing to improve balance. Source: ElderGYM.com

The hostesses for June were Evie Schnieder, Barb Ahrens and Joy Krejcarek. Their program was Lt. C. Olson and Pump Operator D. Griepentrog from the Fire Dept. They talked to us about safety in the home. They gave us a lot of good information and some handouts to make our homes safe . The desserts were delicious. The June birthdays were Barb Ahrens and Kathy Fischer. The July Tea will be the CORONATION OF OUR NEW QUEEN. The tea will start at 1 p.m. and will be a luncheon. After lunch we will crown our new Queen. The coronation committee of Betty Heinzen, Shirley Oswald, Ann Smaglik and Terry Prigge are planning a special day along with the hostesses for July which are Gloria Reis, Delores Boeckman and Joyce Morrison. If you have any ideas or would like to help let one of the members know. We are asking that every Red Hatter make an effort to come and to dress in your most glittering glitter and glamorous glamour. Because our Tea will be a very special event , there will be no luncheon in a restaurant in July. There are a few other things going on in the next few months. August will be a pot luck salad picnic. Plan ahead and at the July Tea a sign up sheet will be sent around for everyone to let the hostesses know the kinds of salads you will be making. Also in August we will do a new HOSTESS SIGN UP SHEET. We are doing this because we have lost some members and we have also gained some members. Another outing brought to our attention is a SHEOZWA. This is a Red Hat outing on Sunday Sept 25, at West Bend. The cost is $21, which includes lunch and entertainment. The theme is Patriotic and the entertainment is Dan Bertler, who put on a show called “Back in the Day Dan,” which is music from the 50’s and 60’s. I know that is before our time, but we might recognize some tunes. Now a personal plug, I am a member of the Sunrise Optimist. We are selling chances to win money on NFL games. The tickets are good for the whole season and the cost is $20. This is a fund raiser for the organization. If you are interested I will have tickets to sell in the next couple teas and explain how it works to anyone who is interested. Funny bone Tickler A Red Hatter’s birthday was coming up and she said to her Red Hat friends “I would like to be ten again.” So, her friends got together and gave her a birthday surprise. They started the day with chocolate chip pancakes, her favorite childhood breakfast. Then they went to the play ground and swung on the swings, titter tottered and went on the merry-go-round. They finished the day by having a banana split. “So, how did you enjoy being a kid again,” her friends asked her. “Great ,“she said, “but when I said I wanted to be ten again, I meant my dress size.” Have a great Red Hat Day Terry
