12 Things to remember‌ There are two crews picking up. One crew for leaves, thatch and garden waste and one crew for brush. This is because brush is placed in a different area at the compost site. If your leaf and raking pile is picked up but brush is not, another crew will be coming through to pick it up. To ensure pick up, all material must be placed between the sidewalk and curb by 7:00am on the specified Monday of your scheduled week, but no more than two weeks prior to the scheduled pickup week. Make sure all yard waste is placed between the sidewalk and curb by 7:00am on the Monday of your pickup week. There will be a minimum $100 charge for material picked up after the initial pickup on your street. The two crews will pick up on each street one time only. Yard waste consists of leaves, thatch, yard and garden waste, and brush (including clean, woody vegetative material) not to exceed five feet in length or six inches in diameter. Brush, branches, and bushes/shrubs without root bulbs are to be kept separate from rakings. Pickup is limited to one truckload per property. Bagged materials WILL NOT be picked up. Crews WILL NOT pick up lumber, garbage, animal droppings, broken concrete, refuse, fill, demolition material, edgings, yard debris greater than six inches in diameter or longer than five feet, including stumps, roots or shrubs with intact bulbs or debris in bags, buckets or garbage cans. PARKING BAN: A parking ban has been put in place for Spring Cleanup. No parking will be allowed in front of garden waste, brush, and/or leaf and raking piles during the week of pickup from 7:00am3:00pm. Vehicles parked on the street in front of any debris piles will be ticketed. *Please note dates are subject to change based on bad weather. Please check www.manitowoc.org or call the Streets and Sanitation Division at 686-6550 for updates. A map of the cleanup schedule is below. You may also view this map and additional details online by visiting www.manitowoc.org.

With over 28,000 graves to maintain, the support of families who observe the cemetery rules is greatly appreciated. Some rules to keep in mind: Beginning May 15, 2016, new decorations or flowers may be placed on gravesites. No perennials or plants which have thorns, thistles, or burs are allowed. Annual flowers can be planted in baskets, urns, or in the ground in a flowerbed. Any flower urns not planted for three consecutive years, which are not part of a permanent marker will be removed. The maximum size of a flowerbed is one foot away from the marker and to the width of the marker. No fences, above ground edging, gravel, lava stone, shredded bark or similar materials may be placed on gravesites. Dirt mounds in the flowerbed or by the marker are not allowed. Decorations that are made of glass or other materials that shatter easily are also not allowed. Up to two solar lights may be placed at each marker. If flags are placed in the ground, the cloth/plastic portion of the flag must be at least 12” above ground level. The complete set of Rules & Regulations can be found on the Pricing & Policies page for Evergreen Cemetery on the City of Manitowoc website (www.manitowoc.org). For additional information, call the Cemetery Division at 686-3570 between the hours of 7a-4p, Monday through Friday.

Earth Day—A day held since 1970, to honor the Earth and to demonstrate 15 support for environmental protection! On this day, many trees are planted! Why Trees? Trees help combat climate change. They absorb excess and harmful CO2 from our atmosphere. In fact, in a single year, an acre of mature trees absorbs the same amount of CO2 produced by driving the average car 26,000 miles. Trees help us breathe clean air. Trees absorb odors and pollutant gases (nitrogen oxides, ammonia, sulfur dioxide and ozone) and filter particulates out of the air by trapping them on their leaves and bark. Trees help communities. Trees help communities achieve long-term economic and environmental sustainability and provide food, energy and income.
Join us for an Arbor Day Celebration at 12:45pm Friday, April 29th at the City Hall, 900 Quay Street, with a tree planting ceremony along the river! Log on to www.manitowoc.org for full details.
We are in need of one or two volunteers to help us get organized! Our puzzle and yarn storage could use an overhaul, and if you enjoy organizing, you may be just the person for the job! Puzzles need to be sorted and labeled by season, and any puzzles with missing pieces need to be removed, to be included with our puzzle and book sale. Yarn needs to be sorted by color. After the initial organization, upkeep should be relatively easy, only one morning or afternoon per month (or however much time you wish to spend). Also, we need someone to water plants once per week. If you are interested in helping out, contact Melissa or Penny at 686-3060. Thanks!
Over the next few months, we are going to share “50 Reasons to get out of bed in the morning”, a fun little book created by the staff of Silver Lake College in the 1980’s. As you read the reasons, you may wonder what, exactly, is an aarpie? An aarpie is ageless, but really anyone age 50 and older, anyone who may be a member of AARP. “Aarpie” means, active, ambitious, resourceful people in existence, or you! Enjoy! Exercise your body. Physical activity is a must. This may be as strenuous as you wish, within medical limitations (but not as light as you might pick—because if a weakened will is in charge, you could find yourself flipping through scandal-sheet pages or pushing pencil points through crossword puzzles or jogging to the jam jar...and nobody gains anything except for weight from those). Start by forcing yourself into a physical regimen; increase your leg-strength and lung power from daily walks; try aerobics, bicycling, golf, swimming, tennis...whatever turns you on and tones you up. Try a health club, join an exercise class... whatever works for you (but do not try reverting to your old habits). Exercise promotes longevity, reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke, helps the digestive process, and aids in the reduction of mental fatigue and tension. Try exercising to your favorite music and with another aarpie, and make it an enjoyable experience. You will look and feel better because you did your brain exercises and are now smart enough to get out of bed in the morning and e o give your body that extra push it needs. Check out the on Page 20 for the exercise of the month!

Tornado Shelter Alternate Tornado Shelter
The Manitowoc Fire Department will be at the Manitowoc Senior Center the week of April 11, to conduct our annual tornado drill. Due to the unpredictability of a storm, such as a tornado, we will not provide a date/time for the drill. Tornado drills are important for keeping us prepared and safe in the event of severe weather. We encourage everyone to participate in the drill on that day. Please take the time to become familiar with the location of storm shelters in the Senior Center building. These maps are also located in each room, near the exit. It is imperative that everyone knows where the appropriate shelters are in the event of a storm. Thank you for your help and cooperation in this important matter.
The City of Manitowoc Early Warning System Operation Thunderstorm Warning: Tornado Warning: The sirens will sound for 1 minute The sirens will sound for 3 minutes with an oscillating tone with a solid tone. Tornado Safety at Home, Work, or at Play Listen, Act, and Live In a home or building, avoid windows. Move to a basement, and get under a sturdy table or the stairs. If a basement is not available, move to a small interior room or hallway on the lowest floor and cover yourself with towels, blankets or pillows. If possible, get under a sturdy table, desk or counter. Put as many walls as possible between you and the storm. Wearing a bike helmet will help protect your head. If outdoors, seek shelter in a sturdy building. If you cannot get to shelter, stay in your vehicle with the seatbelt on and place your head below the windows. Do not seek shelter under an overpass. Mobile homes, even if tied down, offer little protection from tornadoes. You should leave a mobile home and go to the designated storm shelter or the lowest floor of a sturdy nearby building. Go to the interior hall or room. Crouch low, head down, and protect the back of your head with your arms. Stay away from windows and large open rooms like gyms and auditoriums. Benefit of Strength Training: Improve Your Sleep! People who exercise regularly enjoy improved sleep quality. They fall asleep more quickly, sleep more deeply, awaken less often and sleep longer. The Lakeshore Red Hatters meet the second Friday of every month at the Senior Center. Our tea is at 1:30 in the afternoon and all ladies are welcome. The hostesses for March were Betty Heinzen, Ann Smaglik and Charlotte Sobel. They served delicious cakes and ice cream. March birthdays were Donna Durbin, Charlotte Sobel, Bonnie Willems and Delores Boeckman. Hostesses for April are Terry Prigge, Joan Maltby and Berdeva Fischer. Mayor, Justin Nickels has been asked to speak to us about all the exciting things happening in Manitowoc. The April luncheon will be a Kurtz’s in Two Rivers on Tuesday, April 19th. At the March tea, Betty Hienzen organized a surprise mock wedding to help celebrate Gloria’s and John’s nuptials. Bonnie Willems was the bride and Kathy Fischer was the groom. Everybody joined in the fun and gave the “real” bride some lovely and not so lovely gifts. It was a lot of fun. Lydia Groeschel has joined our group. Welcome Lydia. Joann Fischer and Georgeen Tienor are leaving the Red Hatters. We are sorry to see them leave. We will miss you. Our membership is dropping and it seems we are in the doldrums with our teas being very predicable. Therefore there has been some discussion about changing things around a little bit. One idea is to have a party committee of two ladies to organize the Christmas party, the picnic and maybe another special tea, such as a potluck with the Two Rivers Red Hatters. This would free up hostesses for three months, because of our lower membership. Right now we have only 23 members. This needs to be discussed and voted on by all members. Our hostess list will also have to be revamped because of some members physically not able to do the duties of hostesses and not having enough members to cover all the months. Some ideas that have come up are, going out for breakfast instead of lunch, or dessert and coffee or a movie afternoon with an early supper. These are just some ideas that have been suggested. So put on your thinking Red Hats and bring your ideas to the April tea. Another idea that has been brought up is term limits of two years for the queen. This needs to be discussed. Funny bone tickler A Red Hatter was reading a very interesting article on gathering down from geese and wanted to share it with her Red Hat friend. “Do you know how to get down from a goose?” she asked her friend. “Jump.” her friend said. Have a Great Red Hat Day! Terry Prigge
April Movie: Bridge of Spies Tuesday, April 19 @ 1pm A dramatic thriller set against the backdrop of a series of historic events, Bridge of Spies tells the story of James Donovan ( Tom Hanks), a Brooklyn lawyer who finds himself thrust into the center of the Cold War when the CIA sends him on the near-impossible task to negotiate the release of a captured American U-2 pilot.
