An Evening with the Vegetarian Librarian

Brought up on Oaklands Estate, Mary Genevieve Dwyer trained as a nurse serving during World War I. She experienced both hair-raising adventures and opportunities to sightsee. Twice she was mentioned in despatches for her work, and her career continued to flourish after the war. Dr Janet Scarfe is a professional historian with a particular interest in Australian army nurses in both world wars. She is indebted to Vieve Dwyer’s niece for the opportunity to access the treasure trove of records Vieve left and to uncover her story.

She might be a vegetarian, but she's also the Gen-X meat in the inter-generational sandwich of the modern workplace. A mostly true, slightly made-up tale of thwarted ambition, underachievement, and a funeral in a library. A meditation on reading and an ode to life before the device. Sold out at the Adelaide Fringe, An Evening with the Vegetarian Librarian once again brings Tracy Crisp's trademark blend of poignancy and humour to the stage.

Presented by Dr Janet Scarfe Wednesday 27 April, 10.30am Marion Council AdminBuilding - CR1/CR2 245 Sturt Road, STURT 5047 FREE! Bookings essential BOOK heritage@marion.sa.gov.au T 7420 6455

An exclusive experience not to be missed, these curated lunches will allow you to get up-closeand-personal with some of our State's favourite award-winning, best-selling and creative writers in a relaxed atmosphere.

Katherine Tamiko Arguile 'Meshi'

Victoria Purman 'The Nurses' War'

Wine and dine with poet, author and bookseller Molly Murn. Heart of the Grass Tree is an exquisite, searing and hope-filled debut novel set on KI about family stories, country and its living history. Enjoy lunch made with local native ingredients.

In Japan, food expresses a complex and fascinating history, tied to tradition and spirituality that has endured for centuries. With vivid insight and emotional honesty, Katherine’s new book Meshi reveals the culture infused into Japanese food. Enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine and local wine.

Over high tea and bubbles, learn about the role food played in Victoria’s book The Nurses' War, especially the rationing during World War I. Food can be an evocative tool, taking readers back to a time before the array of cuisines Australians enjoy today.

Library Through the Lens: Jonathan Butler 'The Boy in the Dress' Join Jonathan Butler live via webinar as he talks about his historical non-fiction work that was more than ten years in the making. On a balmy Townsville night in 1944, a young serviceman, Warwick Meale, is killed. The army and police do not, or will not, conduct a proper investigation, and history forgets the killer until now. Nearly eighty years on, Warwick's descendent Jonathan Butler dusts off the case and chases the leads that were there all along.

Book Talk Tuesday: Katherine Tamiko Arguile 'Meshi' For Katherine Tamiko Arguile, the Japanese food her mother cooked was a portal to a part of her that sometimes felt lost in the past. In Japan, food is never just food: it expresses a complex and fascinating history, and is tied to tradition and spirituality intrinsic to Japanese culture. Exploring the meals of her childhood through Japan's twentyfour sekki (seasons), Katherine untangles the threads of meaning, memory and ritual woven through every glistening bowl of rice, every tender slice of sashimi and each steaming cup of green tea.
