A Taste of History 6

A Taste of History A Taste of History, an associated Tasting Australia event, is an opportunity to meet local authors Barbara Santich (Bold Palates), Helen Bennetts (Willunga Almonds - Stories + Recipes) and speakers from the Country Women's Association and Haigh's Chocolate archivist, Pamela McAllister, as they come together in a panel format to showcase their writing journeys, recipes, history and experiences. This exciting event, seated 'cafe style' will provide the audience with a delightful gastronomic history of South Australian iconic brands and organisations such as Willunga Almonds, Haigh's and the Country Women's Association. A display of historic chocolate making equipment from Haighs and CWA memorabilia, along with book sales by Wakefield Press and a 'pop-up bakery' raising money for the CWA will make this an unforgettable experience.

In Bold Palates Professor Barbara Santich describes how, from earliest colonial days, Australian cooks have improvised and invented, transforming and 'Australianising' foods and recipes from other countries, along the way laying the foundations of a distinctive food culture. In Willunga Almonds Helen Bennetts celebrates this heritage and the almond's versatility with recipes from dips to desserts. $10 per person includes a delicious cheese platter per table and door prize entry. BYO wine and champagne. Tea and coffee provided. Wednesday 3 May, 6.30pm–8.30pm Cove Civic Centre 1 Ragamuffin Drive, HALLETT COVE 5158 Cost $10 Bookings Essential

Carol LeFevre 'Quiet City: Walking in West Terrace Cemetery' Ordinary lives are revealed as extraordinary, as Carol Lefevre traces the stories of West Terrace Cemetery's little-known inhabitants: there is the tale of the man who fatally turned his back on a tiger, and the man who avoided one shipwreck only to perish in another; there is the story of the young woman who came home from a dance and drank belladonna, and those who died at the hands of one of South Australia's most notorious abortionists. From archives, and headstones, the author recovers histories that time and weather threaten to obliterate. Quiet City is a book for everyone who has ever wandered through an old graveyard and wished its stones could speak.

Book Talk Tuesdays

Peter Monteath 'Australia - A German Traveller in the Age of Gold' Friedrich Gerstäcker, the most illustrious and prolific of German travel writers, set foot in Australia in March 1851, having walked across the Andes, traipsed the goldfields of California, and sailed over the Pacific in search of new adventures. Gerstäcker found adventures aplenty in Australia. He rowed and trekked down the Murray, absorbed the excitement triggered by the discovery of gold, visited his countrymen in South Australia, and trained his outsider's eyes on a colonial society gripped by profound change. Lydia Laube is no stranger to near-death experiences. She encounters many on the five journeys she takes to discover Myanmar, or Burma as it was known on the first three of these. As ever Lydia chooses the route less travelled to reach and explore this wondrous land of pagodas and paddy fields. Under Myanmar’s magic spell, she pays homage to the world’s biggest python, visits the world’s largest book and falls in love with a little horse called Madonna. From Burma to Myanmar is Lydia Laube’s ninth travel book. Her first, Behind the Veil, was published in 1991. It has been an Australian bestseller, reprinted eleven times and translated and republished in five other countries.
