'The Raven' and Gothic Poetry

Join James from Reading Companions as he introduces us to legendary writer Edgar Allan Poe and his most celebrated work, The Raven.

A tale of grief, loss and insanity, The Raven transformed Poe into one of the most famous authors in America. Alongside a reading, James will also chat to us about Poe’s influence on gothic fiction – short stories, poems and novels full of dread, horror and the supernatural.

Written in 1953, Fahrenheit 451 is a novel about a future society where books are banned. We follow protagonist Guy Montag, a fireman whose job is to burn down houses in which books have been discovered, as he begins to doubt his mission.

Harmony Week Film Screening: The Song Keepers

Celebrate Harmony Week at the library with a special screening of The Song Keepers, which follows the visionary Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir.

In the obscure churches of remote Central Australia, a hidden musical legacy of ancient Aboriginal languages, sacred poetry and baroque music is being preserved by four generations of song women who make up the Central Australian Aboriginal Women’s Choir. Together they share their music and stories of cultural survival, identity and cross-cultural collaboration. Refreshments and snacks will be provided. Brought to you by Kanopy. Suitable for ages 12+

Book Talk Tuesday: Fay Lee 'Empathy'

Join author Fay Lee as she discusses her thrilling new science fiction novel, Empathy. Set in the near future where the ultra-rich have abandoned Earth and cruise a network of decadent Sky Towns, Empathy follows an unnamed sex worker with amnesia, as she tries to track down the men who kidnapped her. Likened to Margaret Atwood’s classic A Handmaid’s Tale, Empathy is a fascinating exploration of power, politics and ownership. A fast-paced thriller where empathy is a service, a luxury and a corruption.

Fay Lee will discuss the process of writing her first novel, the strengths of science fiction as a genre and her experience of writing competitions.

'The Wonder of Little Things'

Join author Lea McInerney as she discusses the late Vince Copley’s extraordinary memoir The Wonder of Little Things with Vince’s daughter, Kara McEwen. The late Vince Copley, a First Nations elder, shares his extraordinary story of finding kindness in the midst of prejudice, and joy in living life to the full. Vince tells his story with humour, humility and wisdom. Written with his friend Lea McInerney over many cups of tea, it is an Australian classic in the making, a plain-speaking account of hardship, courage and optimism. Science is everywhere! Especially in the Circus! In this high energy show Dr Quark explores the science and forces behind the circus tricks we all love. While performing feats of unicycling, juggling, rolla bolla and plate spinning, Dr Quark demonstrates the effects of gravity, momentum, friction, air pressure, energy transfer and push and pull forces. He then applies those same concepts and more to his favourite science demonstrations.

California Dreaming

By the 1970s the hills of Los Angeles were alive with a new sound - an amazing group of young singers and songwriters were at the dawn of their legendary careers. Linda Ronstadt – HITMAKER

In the 1970s there was one woman with the Midas touch in music, the most versatile vocalist of the modern era. Linda said, “I don’t write ‘em, I just pick ‘em...” because she spun other peoples’ tunes into gold. She made them hits. This show is about those wonderful songs and Linda’s magical touch which sent them to the top of the charts.
