MATES in Construction is an independent charity that exists to reduce the high level of suicide in the Australian construction and allied industries. Currently, the suicide rate is around two times higher than the Australian average for other occupations. This workshop will help workers and their families better understand the problem of suicide in the industry and provide guidance on recognising the signs and signals of a person at risk, and how to help.

The act of creating art can have a powerful impact on our wellbeing, promoting mindfulness and peace. In this workshop, local artist Helen Stacey will show how colour, form and symbolism can be used for self-expression. She will introduce you to ways of working with art materials and provide you with suggestions for starting an art practice of your own. Do you love discussing your latest read with other people? Would you like to connect with a community of fellow book lovers or are you hoping to get back into reading after a break? Then come along to our Book Club Social Night, an evening of literary fun designed to help you meet fellow book lovers who would like to start a new book club. This interactive mental health workshop aims to introduce young people, aged 12–25, and their family and friends, to information about accessing headspace services. Explore the differences between mental wellness, mental health problems and mental illness while busting myths associated with mental health.
This is a great way to increase a young person’s skills, knowledge, and confidence on a range of issues, as well as provide a great vehicle for prevention, both universal and targeted.

In addition to her writing, Valerie has worked as a tertiary lecturer, secondary teacher and the Australian director of an international education program.
Join Valerie Volk as she discusses her experience visiting a small village in Germany called Oberammergau, to observe their famous Passion Play, which dates to the Plague year of 1634. Valerie will be discussing the influence of this play on her own writing, particularly her novel, Passion Play: the Oberammergau Tales, which follows an eclectic group of travellers on a four-day bus trip to Oberammergau in the Bavarian Alps.
Jonathan is a recipient of three Police Commissioner Commendations, The Australian National Medal and The State and National Police Service Medal.
Join local author Jonathan Ray as he discusses his new book, A Time Like No Other. Jonathan’s book reflects on his 42 years of service in the South Australian Police, where he held a variety of roles, including highly specialised policing areas.
