Active Living Guide Spring/Summer 2016

Message from the Mayor I am pleased to have the opportunity to offer a few words of encouragement about the importance of staying active in order to foster and sustain good health. Whatever your activity of choice may be, the most important thing is that you do something – don’t just procrastinate citing unconvincing excuses. Caring for your health should not be just one of those New Year’s resolutions that many fail to keep. Keep active for your own personal wellbeing. Do something as a family. You will gain much more than you realize. Remember, ensuring we are pro-active in our commitment to good health encourages others by example. Our children learn from us, so let’s take our lifestyle choice seriously. As Spring brings a fresh start for those of you who may have been a little too dormant over the winter months, let’s put forth extra effort to participate in life by walking, running, cycling, or whatever activity strikes your fancy. Hiking the myriad trails available to us in this beautiful community is satisfying both physically and mentally. You may wish to try your hand at a canoeing adventure on the Powell Forest Canoe route, a guaranteed treat for the senses and manageable for all fitness levels. As well, the Recreation Complex offers fitness opportunities to satisfy every appetite. The possibilities in this community are virtually endless! Our future starts now, so let’s make the decision to live it to the fullest. At the end of the day, it comes down to a simple matter of choice. As life brings greater rewards when one has their health, let’s make a commitment to get active together! God Bless all of you!

Karate ... a great investment More than ever in today’s world, your child needs positive values and self-discipline to succeed. Our unique programs will teach your child a series of physical skills which will quickly translate into a feeling of confidence and high self-esteem. This, in turn, will promote self-discipline and concentration which often pays off at school in the form of higher grades. Add to all of this a positive attitude, acceptance of responsibility, and leadership skills, and you can see why so many parents feel that martial arts lessons are the best investment that they have ever made for their child. So, ask yourself this - if you could create the perfect activity for your children, what sort of things would they learn while doing it? • What if they learn how to become more disciplined? (Maybe their school work would improve as a result?) • What if they learnt to be more self-confident? (Wouldn’t you feel better knowing your child could deal with pressure from their friends?) • What if they learn to have genuine respect for others, like parents and teachers? (Imagine that!) • What if they learn how to set goals and overcome obstacles to achieve them? (What if you had learned how to set and achieve goals when you were eight?)

It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. It has been considered to be a form of ‘meditation in motion’ which promotes serenity and inner peace. Tai chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the most fit to people confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery. Tai Chi has been proven scientifically to increase muscle strength, balance, flexibility, aerobic conditioning, bone density, heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, sleep, post-stoke recovery, etc. 17309 Wed 7:00-8:00pm Location: Dogwood Room

A Message from the Director of Parks, Recreation & Culture Hi, I’m Ray Boogaards. I hope this guide will help inspire you to stay active and involved with our community. Our department’s goal is for the Powell River region to become one of the healthiest and most active regions in British Columbia. With your help we can reach that goal together by getting active whether it be a walk, run, bike ride, attend a cultural event or signing up for one of our many fitness programs. We’re also always working to improve our recreation services which is why we’re conducting a large-scale study of recreation needs in collaboration with Tla’amin First Nation, the City of Powell River and the Powell River Regional District. This will help us develop a parks, recreation and culture plan that will guide our services over the next 10 years. If you’ve already attended a focus group meeting, thank you! And for those who have attended a focus group meeting or have not attended a focus group meeting we’d love to hear from you so please watch for an invitation to participate in an on-line, paper, and kiosk survey in the very near future. My door is always open. Please feel free to drop by and say ‘hello’ when you are at the Complex.
