THE USCG POLAR STAR RETURNS TO MARE ISLAND DRY DOCK
3
On Friday, April 8, the USCGC POLAR STAR (WAGB
10) paid another visit to the Mare Island Dry Docks. Although its home port is in the frigid bay of Seattle, Washington, the POLAR STAR is no stranger to Vallejo and the Mare Island Dry Docks (MIDD). In 2021, the US Coast Guard awarded an indefinite quantity, indefinite-delivery contract to MIDD for the Coast Guard Cutter Polar Star service life extension project (SLEP) as part of the In-Service Vessel Sustainment program. The project will recapitalize several major systems and extend the service life of the cutter by approximately four years. In addition, the maintenance contract with MIDD will help the Coast Guards grand "cutter " jewel of the sea continue its heavy icebreaking service as they prepare to transition the operations to the new polar security cutter (PSC) scheduled to be commissioned in 2024. Commissioned in 1976, the POLAR STAR is the US Coast Guards' only active heavy icebreaker cutter vessel, coming in at a whopping 399-feet. As part of the largest boats in the USCG fleet, the POLAR STAR boasts three aviation-grade gas turbine engines, which provide her with 75,000 horsepower, making her one of the most powerful ships in the US Coast Guard fleet. This ship frequents the arctic, making headway for Navy cruisers and other vessels charting the waters in that region. On an annual basis, the POLAR STAR travels to McMurdo Station, Antarctica, to lead Operation Deep Freeze, which supports regular missions to resupply US Antarctic bases, coordinated by the United States military and break miles of ice up to 21 feet thick in some sections.

On April 9 at 8:42 a.m., the Vallejo Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a vegetation fire on the east side of the Carquinez Bridge, near Glen Cove. The California Highway Patrol (CHP) closed two lanes of Eastbound Interstate 80 for a short time as Vallejo Fire and mutual aid worked to reach and put out the fire from the shoulder.
Responding crews quickly attacked the fire from multiple directions in order to stop its progression and protect multiple homes at the top of the hill. The total fire was approximately three acres and was extinguished around 10:00 a.m. Val l ej o W ee kl y

FLEXIBLE, EXTENDED, NO-INTEREST PAYMENT PLANS AVAILABLE
Val l ej o W ee kl y
On April 2, 2020, California Governor Newsom signed an executive order restricting water shutoffs to homes and small businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic.
14
The order protected consumers who could not pay for their water service during the pandemic, relieving them of fear that their water service may be shut off for non-payment. Although customers were protected from shutoffs during this time, this did not mean that the water delivered to customers could be provided free of charge. Costs to treat, monitor, and deliver drinking water to customers remained unchanged. For those customers not paying their bills, the unpaid amounts accumulated (interest-free) and were tracked by the Water Billing team. The Governor’s water billing moratorium came to an end on December 31, 2021. With the lifting of the state's moratorium so close to the
holidays, and then the surge of the Omicron variant, the Vallejo Water Department opted to continue the water billing moratorium through March 31, 2022, in order to continue to provide a safety net to customers. With Vallejo’s billing moratorium ending on March 31, all unpaid water charges that were delinquent on, and accrued, since April 2020 will be due. We understand this can be a stressful transition for our customers, and we are here to help. We offer flexible and extended no-interest payment plans to avoid service shutoff. Delinquency notices for past-due amounts will begin to be mailed to water customers in April 2022. TO ARRANGE FOR YOUR PAYMENT PLAN: • • •
Email vallejowaterbilling@cityofvallejo.net Call (707) 648-4345 Visit: cityofvallejo.net/waterbilling
In addition to payment plan options, the Water Rate Assistance Program (WRAP) is available to qualified customers. To learn more about WRAP visit myvallejo.com/wrap.
