PG&E Former Manufactured Gas Plant Site Update

Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E), in partnership with the City of Vallejo, is announcing it has begun the remediation process on property located near the Southern Waterfront Boat Launch site, that used to be the location of the former PG&E Vallejo Manufactured Gas Plant (MGP). PG&E is addressing environmental impacts from the former MGP that operated from 1872 to 1930. The 26-acre property is owned by the City of Vallejo and the remediation is necessary in supporting future redevelopment of the site.
process starts in April with the erection of several tent-like structures.
Those in the area may have already noticed preliminary construction activity. In February, letters were sent by PG&E to customers located in the area about upcoming activity in the general vicinity of the former MGP site; from Curtola Parkway and Sonoma Boulevard to the waterfront. The most visible part of the

“Safety is our top priority and transparency is also the goal,” said Heather Crawford, Interim Director of PG&E Environmental Remediation. “While we conduct this work, it is important to us that the community is fully informed about this work and has an opportunity to ask questions and share feedback. We are excited that this project will ready the property for future redevelopment by the City of Vallejo.”
Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, and other resource agencies. “The City of Vallejo is grateful to begin this project alongside PG&E,” said Mike Malone, Interim City Manager. “While this site once served as an energy source for the City, we are eager to properly and safely restore the land and soil. Soon, the area will be able to, once again, serve our residents and provide more recreational opportunities for everyone to enjoy.”
plot, which will be identified through a potential RFP. Any upcoming development on the site will get input from the public and must be consistent with City, County and State requirements, including the Land Surplus Act. The remediation and restoration work, and any potential future development, will ensure the site offers a safe and healthy environment, which will benefit neighboring communities and residents for generations.
DTSC has approved an approach to cleaning up the Learn more about this ongoing project at pge.com/ site to protect public health and the environment vallejo-mgp. long-term while minimizing impacts to the nearby communities. The approach combines excavation and the off haul of soil with on-site treatment to help minimize odors, noise, and traffic impacts. Active monitoring will be performed during work to confirm that protective measures in those plans are working as planned. Work will be conducted Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. with occasional Saturday work.
To support PG&E’s cleanup efforts, the City of Vallejo has closed a portion of the southern waterfront boat launch parking lot. One boat launch ramp and some “day parking” spaces will remain available for users of the boat launch areas throughout this work. The second ramp will not be usable. Once the remediation and restoration are complete, the City will have a refreshed parking lot complete with new restrooms and landscaping. The site will also be primed for redevelopment. In 2023, the City will consider taking proposals from potential developers to bring new life to the
