ELECTION
It was great to see local people supporting a local event by attending the Wanneroo Show in November, and what a fun-filled event it was. As we welcome the warmer weather and the school holidays, you will find plenty of information on events and programs the City has to offer. From Live at the Amphitheatre outdoor cinema to Retro Rewind which celebrates all things vintage, we are excited to reveal the
fabulous events that are in store for the community to enjoy. Australia Day will also bring residents together to celebrate what it means to be Australian, with many new citizens welcomed at the City’s Australia Day citizenship ceremony a memorable highlight on the City’s calendar. We value our hardworking volunteers in the City. In this edition we talk to two of our volunteers who share their experiences about their invaluable work in the community. As always, we remind the public about the importance of keeping safe on our beaches, and to be vigilant during the bushfire season, supporting the essential services of

CITY OF WANNEROO BUSHFIRE PROGRAM RECEIVES PRAISE
2015 City of Wanneroo Fire Services with Mayor Tracey Roberts.
THE CITY OF WANNEROO’S BUSHFIRE HAZARD REDUCTION PROGRAM HAS RECEIVED PRAISE FROM THE MINISTER FOR EMERGENCY SERVICES JOE FRANCIS. The three-year program provides detailed mitigation strategies to minimise the impact of bushfire on life, property and the environment. The program identifies the best use of City resources with the aim of providing maximum protection to the community from the threat of bushfire. Its main role is to identify bushfire risk areas and propose mitigation strategies to treat those risks such as managing fuel loads to reduce the rate, spread and intensity of bushfires while minimising environmental and ecological impact.
The City’s fire protection officers undertake site inspections, assess fuel loads, evaluate past fire history, report risk areas and start treatment strategies for risk areas with follow up inspections. This year the City has conducted prescribed burns to 446.8ha of land in addition to excess fuel loads at Carramar and Marangaroo golf courses. Mr Francis complimented the City for its efforts towards the creation of the fire mitigation program during a visit to the Ashby Operations Centre. “Recently I had the opportunity to speak with the City of Wanneroo fire protection officers and brigades and was very impressed with the results of the program so far,” Mr Francis said.
“I wish all other local governments set the same standards that the City of Wanneroo is setting.” “It is great to know that we are leading the way in bushfire preparedness.” Mayor Tracey Roberts said. “This praise is testament to the wonderful work our firefighters do.” City fire officers recently conducted a prescribed burn in bushland around the property of Neerabup resident Kathryn Birch. Although the Birch family-of-seven maintains their own firebreak, the City identified an increased risk of fire in City land surrounding the property and intervened for additional burning. “There was about 25 tonnes of fuel load on the ground and they took it down to about two tonnes,” Mrs Birch said. “They’ve taken all the fuel load off the ground and have allowed us to feel so much safer. It’s going to be much safer summer for us - We really appreciate the work of the City of Wanneroo firies.”

FIREBREAKS ARE ESSENTIAL THE DUE DATE FOR COMPLETED FIREBREAKS HAS NOW PASSED AND FIRE PROTECTION OFFICERS HAVE BEGUN FIREBREAK INSPECTIONS. Firebreaks are a simple way to help protect your property and are a legal requirement. For properties less than 2000sq metres a firebreak is to be no less than 2m wide by 2m high. For properties more than 2000sq metres a fire break is to be no less than 3m wide x 3m high. Firebreaks need to be maintained until 30 April. ALL BURNING IS PROHIBITED BETWEEN 1 DECEMBER AND 31 MARCH.

SIMPLE STEPS TO KEEP YOUR HOME SAFE REMEMBER THESE PRECAUTIONS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT IN THE SUBURBS AS THEY ARE IN RURAL ZONES. Ensure you have installed smoke detectors in your home and they are in working order. Clear all vegetation, rubbish and flammable material away from the walls of your home as they may fuel a fire. A simple tip to remember is to create a 20 metre circle of safety around your home free from all these items. All firewood, timber, petrol and kerosene will also need to be stored well away from your home. Winter brings in fallen leaves. Clean your gutters out, trim branches away from the house and ensure trees are not growing near buildings.

MAKE SAFETY IN THE WATER THIS SUMMER A PRIORITY

WAYS TO KEEP SAFE: Read the beach warning signs Swim between the red and yellow flags Don’t swim alone Learn CPR Ask a lifeguard for safety advice The City is also doing its part and has significantly improved the safety of coastal access and facilities through a city wide improvement to beach risk signage, improvements to access paths, increased maintenance and education programs.
SUMMER GOES HAND IN HAND WITH SWIMMING SO MAKE SURE YOU AND YOUR LOVED ONES STAY SAFE IN THE WATER BY FOLLOWING SOME IMPORTANT ADVICE. Making the most of our City’s glorious coastline is a pastime many residents and visitors relish. The City is continuing its successful partnership with Surf Life Saving WA on the BeachSafe program to keep people safe in and near the water. So far nearly 3,000 residents have been taught valuable beach safety skills through programs delivered at schools, beaches and community centres. The aquatic safety program has four key principles: supervision, education, first aid skills and being prepared.
Learning to swim is crucial. The ocean is a dynamic environment that requires extra surf knowledge and skills. Surf Life Saving WA’s community education programs can teach you about wave types, rip currents and marine life. Making sure you check the beach conditions, always read the safety signs and tell someone where you are going and when you will be back. Knowing CPR and first aid means you will be able to respond quickly in an emergency and significantly increase chances of survival. And remember if you need help, stay calm and attract attention. You should conserve your energy by floating on your back. This will ensure you have the energy to remain afloat until further aid arrives.

LOCALS
LOCAL VOLUNTEERS MAKING A DIFFERENCE
FOR RAE CULL AND JENNIE DANHER, VOLUNTEERING IS A WAY OF LIFE. Rae is a volunteer at the City’s Community History Centre located in the Wanneroo Regional Museum. Rae regularly volunteers a few hours of her time to help catalogue materials, upload oral history interviews and scan photographs - essential services to help the City maintain its extensive collection of history and heritage. Rae started volunteering two years ago as she wanted to give back to the community, she also wanted to learn new skills and gain confidence to help her return to the workforce. “Volunteering gives you a great feeling,” Rae said. “Everyone is grateful for anything you can give and it is a rewarding experience.”
For Jennie (pictured) who volunteers at the Wanneroo Library, her experiences are similar to Rae’s. Jennie, who hails from Wales, started volunteering as a way to meet new people when she migrated to Australia five years ago. “It is a great way to meet new friends and get to know your local community,” Jennie said. Jennie donates two hours of her time every Wednesday at the library - one week delivering books for the Books on Wheels service, and the alternate Wednesday processing. The City is always looking for volunteers, like Rae and Jennie, to help make vibrant and connected communities and has many volunteer opportunities that would appeal to men and women of all ages and experiences.

KOOKABURRA DAY CLUB CELEBRATES MILESTONES THE KOOKABURRA DAY CLUB CELEBRATED TWO MILESTONES THIS YEAR, THE CLUB’S 25TH ANNIVERSARY AND LONG-TIME MEMBER MARJORIE CONWAY’S 80TH BIRTHDAY. The group of about 10 Aboriginal women meet at the day club in Girrawheen every Tuesday and Thursday to create craft and projects for themselves and the community. The group started in 1990 with some of the founding members of that group still attending regularly today. Together the group created six works of art on hessian depicting the six Aboriginal seasons and recently published the works in a book now for sale in the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of WA.
CULTURE
They are already working on their next book which will include the stories of the lives of each of the ladies in the club. Marjorie credits the club for keeping her mind and body active for the past 25 years. “It has change my life in a big way really, I’ve been able to get out more, do different things, go to different places,” she said. “We go on holidays together… we’ve been everywhere from Albany, Esperance, Kalgoorlie, Busselton, Mandurah, Shark Bay and Geraldton.” The City held a morning tea for birthday celebration for Marjorie attended by Mayor Tracey Roberts, the City’s funded services team, Kookaburra members and friends.
CULTURE
Mayor Roberts said this was a significant milestone for the club and its long-time member Marjorie. “The health and vitality of club members is a product of the club’s great work. I am sure we will only see further need for more great festivities like this for club members’ birthdays.” Club co-founder Dot Bynder said the projects completed by the women gave them something to be proud of. “We don’t just do craft work and projects we also do outings and visit other day club groups,” she said. “Originally it was a good time out place for all the grandmothers to come here to do their own thing, whether it be craft or having a good yarn, it’s good to see that everyone’s happy and achieving things together.”
RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN IN AFFECT
THE RECONCILIATION ACTION PLAN WORKING GROUP HAS BEEN BUSY FULFILLING THE CITY’S VISION FOR RECONCILIATION. The City’s 2015-2017 Reconciliation Action Plan, launched in June, is well under way with 37 actions to complete by the end of 2017. A successfully completed action this year includes the expansion of National Reconciliation Week and NAIDOC week celebrations. The City hosted a series of Aboriginal art and culture workshops for local schools to celebrate both events as opposed to previous one day events and was attended by about 180 students over six weeks.
As well as the workshops the City hosted Aboriginal story-time sessions in City libraries, a Noongar language session, a fashion and photography exhibition developed by the Community Arts Network WA and held a display by Narrogin Senior High School at the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre. Upcoming actions include the installation of culturally educational signage at three significant Noongar sites in the City, development of a tour of significant Noongar sites, host a guided walk of the Yaberoo Budjara heritage trail and the development of a Aboriginal ‘Museum in a Box’ that can be loaned to local schools as an education resource.
