The City of Wanneroo is proud to host the National Growth Areas Alliance (NGAA) Congress later this year. On 14 and 15 November 2016, councils from across Australia will converge on the City of Wanneroo for the two-day event. This year’s theme is Challenges and Opportunities in Building the Outer Suburbs of the Future.
The NGAA represents the interests of fast growing areas across Australia, and this year focused on the Fund our Future campaign. With the highest number of residents signing the petition nationally the City of Wanneroo lead the call to action for this campaign, which called for a strong stance on infrastructure policy and a dedicated national funding mechanism to address the congestion and infrastructure problems of the outer suburbs. RANGERS
OUR SERVICES: WANNEROO RANGERS IN THE SPOTLIGHT
City of Wanneroo rangers play a vital role in making our community safer and a more enjoyable place to live. Rangers carry out regular patrols throughout the City, including residential streets, parks, beaches, off road vehicle areas and civic buildings. Their presence deters vandalism and property damage, protects our natural environment from illegal dumping and encourages responsible dog ownership. They also manage the City’s Animal Care Centre, helping reunite lost pets with their owners and rehoming abandoned animals. The Ranger and Safety Services can be reached on 9405 5000 during office hours or 1300 138 393 after hours. When calling the City, please provide as much information as possible so our Community Safety Patrols and Rangers can respond to incidents quickly. Include details such as: • Nature of the incident • Time and location • Number and description of people involved • Vehicle description and number plates
DID YOU KNOW...? The City of Wanneroo provides a 24/7 community safety service. City rangers work 6am-10.30pm, Sunday to Thursday and 6am-midnight, Friday and Saturday. Safety patrol officers work from 9pm-6.30am, seven days a week. From December to April, coastal rangers work from 7am-6pm, Friday to Sunday. In certain situations rangers cannot assist and you should contact Police directly. Police should always be contacted for the following situations: • Hooning and road policing • Antisocial behaviour • Alcohol and drug use • CCTV on private property • Registering a party • Noise complaints • Neighbour disputes • Burglary/robbery • Assault • Domestic violence Always call police on 000 in an emergency or life-threatening situation or 131 444 for police assistance in non-emergency situations.
A JOB WELL DONE A number of residents have recently contacted the City to thank our rangers for their great work in the local community. Here are some of their comments: “Many thanks to your rangers for the effort you put in to resolve my concerns about a dangerous dog. Thank you again for keeping me informed throughout the process.” Maureen, Mindarie “I would like to pass on my commendation to the ranger that attended the Merriwa IGA to collect two dogs that had been tied to a pole for hours. The attending ranger was very professional and the way he handled the dogs was excellent, as one of them was aggressive. I would like the ranger recognised for his outstanding work and would nominate him for Ranger of the Year!” Renee, Merriwa “I would like to thank rangers and staff for following up the parking problems around the Yanchep Beach Primary School. After discussions with the ranger I was so happy with the outcome. I very much appreciate the vigilance because the safety of the kids is paramount. A big thank you to Wanneroo and the rangers. It’s a tough job and I’m sure a lot of people complain but I like to praise a job well done.” Diane, Yanchep If you have been impressed with the service provided by a ranger, the City would love to hear about it. Post a comment on the City’s Facebook page or call 9405 5000.

MKR’S ANNA AND JORDAN AT THE LIVING AND LEISURE EXPO
See Anna and Jordan cooking demos at the Living and Leisure Expo featuring Dogs Breakfast.
Wanneroo’s own Anna and Jordan Bruno made their mark on hit television show My Kitchen Rules earlier this year, and now the mother/son team are set to star at the City of Wanneroo’s upcoming Living and Leisure Expo, featuring Dogs Breakfast. The pair will perform several live cooking demonstrations throughout the day, showcasing their mouthwatering recipes. “We will be cooking home-style food with a lot of love and passion,” Anna promised. “It will be a lot of fun and we are really looking forward to the event.” Fans will also have the chance to meet the duo, with Jordan particularly keen to see the hundreds of four-legged friends in attendance.
“I am likely to steal a puppy,” he joked. “I love the idea that pets are welcome at this event, I am obsessed with dogs so I’m excited to see them all there.” A Wanneroo resident for more than 25 years, Anna moved to the area when she married her husband, who had lived in Wanneroo his entire life with his market gardening family. “When I first started dating my husband there was only one bus in and one bus out,” she said. “Growing up in Bassendean it seemed so far away, but I instantly loved the small community feel. “It has been a great place to raise four boys on acreage - it’s so open, we loved the freedom and it just has a really good community feel. We’ve seen some amazing changes over the years.”
Anna and Jordan’s passion for cooking was evident on the small screen, with both of them having an interest from a young age. “I grew up in a large family of seven children, so I started by helping out with dinner, peeling the potatoes, which grew to suggesting meals and doing the cooking,” Anna said. “I love to eat, and I love to cook.” Jordan took an interest in cooking at about 12 years of age, and while the pair enjoy cooking meals from their Italian and Maltese heritage, they love different cuisines, including Moroccan and Thai. “I love experimenting with healthy meals and trying to do a twist on the traditional,” Jordan said. Life since MKR has been busy for the pair, carrying out cooking demonstrations and doing corporate catering. In September Anna plans to have ‘Mama Anna’s Cooking Classes’ up and running, while Jordan is searching for the perfect location in Perth’s northern suburbs to open a café, where he hopes to offer traditional food with a healthy twist.

WH: You’ve opened for the Rolling Stones and played on Imagine Dragons and Fall Out Boy’s Australian tours. If you could choose to play with any band past or present, who would it be? NW: We supported the Stones in 2015, I think 1975 would have been much more the vibe! WH: You’ve been together for more than ten years, what has been the most memorable moment? NW: The cliché would be supporting the Stones, or playing this gig or meeting yadiyada but to be honest the best moments are always behind closed doors with the lads.
WH: Who has the most annoying habit? NW: Will has developed an obsession with Faberge eggs. It’s not annoying as much as it is worrisome… WH: Nothing Touches Me isn’t as punky as previous albums you’ve released with love songs such as Angela and Blame it All On Me. What was this influenced by? NW: We never embark on a songwriting journey with a fixed destination in mind. We consider ourselves lucky to ever finish a song let alone tick off any criteria along the way. I could tell you what the process was for either of those songs you mentioned but the story would be vastly different for each of them, as it is with every song. WH: What are your favourite songs to play live? What songs can we expect to hear at the gig? NW: I love playing I Can Make You Love Me because it was a big hit for us, and it is the second last song in the set. This is normally when I can bring myself to finally look at the crowd and take it all in.

WANNEROO’S HONOURS PROUD PIONEERING PAST
While life was busy in the garden, Frank enjoyed fishing in his spare time, and later joined the Hillarys Yacht Club where he remains a member. Frank remembers entering vegetables in the Wanneroo Agricultural Show, with the family even winning the perpetual trophy in the late 1970s.
Ante moved to a big block of land in Wanneroo in 1961 and established a market garden business with his wife Tereza. Here they grew all sorts of vegetables, from lettuces and silverbeet to cauliflower and broccoli. “We grew everything!” remembers Ante.
Times were tough in those days, and the family lived in a shed for two years while they saved up enough money to build a house. Ante and Tereza kept their market garden going for an incredible 45 years with their son Zoran joining them in the family business.
Tereza arrived in Perth in 1956. Tereza met a young man named Ante at a dance and the couple married in April 1960. The following year they moved to Wanneroo, in the area which is now Madeley. Tereza found it very difficult to get around without a car. “Back then there was only one bus which travelled up Wanneroo Road, once in the
morning and once in the afternoon to take the workers to and from Perth city,” she says. This led Tereza to learn to drive, a skill which saw her become the talk of the town because it was simply not the “done thing” for women to drive at that time. Tereza is proud to report she is still driving today, just shy of 80 years young.
Angelo was three years old when he made the long journey to Western Australia with his family. An £800 insurance payout to Angelo’s father provided the deposit for a 30 acre property in Carabooda, where his life in the family market garden began. Angelo remained dedicated to growing vegetables, which he is still doing today -
and has always taken pride in entering the produce in the Wanneroo Show. Angelo works with his sons, dividing their time between their Carabooda garden and a property in Gingin. A few years ago Angelo returned to Sicily for a holiday, and says he was so very thankful that his parents made the move to WA to create a life of opportunity for him and his family in Wanneroo.
Nancy was born in Wanneroo and has never moved from ‘home’. Her parents were market gardeners and Nancy and her nine siblings worked in the vegetable garden, even when they were going to school. Nancy’s brother Frank Puglia was a mechanic who restored their grandfather’s 1928 Chevrolet 4 truck to its former glory in 2002 in his workshop. Her grandfather used to lend
the truck to the old Wanneroo Road Board to carry food and beer to various functions and the family used to take their vegetables on the truck to market. The whole family were so proud of the way Frank restored the vintage truck. It is now housed by the City of Wanneroo, recognised as a precious and significant piece of local history.
Ante Antunovich
Frank was born in Perth in 1942. In the early 1960s his parents bought land at the 10 and a half mile peg on Wanneroo Road, and established their market garden. Frank was a motor mechanic, and he set up at home to work on machinery used in the market gardens. But he ended up working in the market garden himself.

This year, 15 new pioneers were welcomed into club. Below are some excerpts of their stories. Full profiles can be viewed on the City’s website or watch the video via the City’s YouTube channel.

CITY OF WANNEROO
Lucy D’Olimpio Barbara McKendry Pamela Rocca Jenny Stritof Nora Susac
Growing up with siblings Frank, Marie, Dawn and John, Lucy remembers a childhood in her parents’ Osborne Park market garden. When all of the gardens were being pushed out of the city, her parents bought land on Wanneroo Road at Lake Goollelal, near where Waldecks is today. Since her early teens, Lucy has had a love for music, excelling at piano and vocals.
She went on to become a music teacher, and many would have had the pleasure of Lucy performing for them, as she has been at everything from Deb balls to dinner dances, weddings to the Agricultural Society Dinner Dance. She is still singing, often performing at nursing homes or when her daughter - well known vocalist and entertainer Nikki Gillis - drags her on stage.
Barbara moved to Wanneroo when she was five and has not lived anywhere else since. Her mum was a piggery farmer and drove the Wanneroo school bus for 19 years. She loved swimming in the lake at the front of their farm. Nowadays, Barbara loves Wanneroo for her friends, family and the environment.
Barbara has fond memories of the orangecoloured school buses run by Mr Vosnacos and his sons. During the day they parked their buses under pine trees at the side of Wanneroo Road. Back then the pine trees came almost up to the old post office.
Pamela has had Wanneroo connections in her family history for several generations. Her father Alan Cooper was a Wanneroo Shire councillor and worked for the forestry department in Wanneroo. Pamela first moved to Wanneroo with her family in 1958. She met her husband Giuseppe ‘Joe’ Rocca, another Wanneroo pioneer, at a dance at the shire hall.
One of Pamela’s favourite memories of her time living in the City is the renaming of Rocca Way. She says it was a beautiful moment as she had tried for a long time to get a street named after her husband’s family so their memory could live on and future generations would know how hard they worked and how much they contributed to the community.
Jenny was born in Slovenia and moved to Australia when she 17. She taught herself English by memorising 100 words at night. When she was 22, she married and moved to Wanneroo. Jenny and Joseph lived in a house on Church Street for four years before buying their current house on Wanneroo Road in 1970. Jenny has fond memories of old Wanneroo being very quiet.
Soon after marriage, Jenny fell pregnant and went on to have four children. She used to clean for CALM at night. Joseph also worked for CALM for 36 years and planted many of the pine trees in Gnangara, Yanchep and near the old Cappiello house on Wanneroo Road. Jenny remembers hand pollenating the pine forest trees opposite Ashby Road that were as tall as her at the time.
When she was 18 years old, Nora moved with her family to Perth travelling on a ship called the Himalaya. They arrived after a three-week journey. On New Year’s Eve 1961, Nora met Jerry at a dance and were married in 1964 and Nora moved to Wanneroo. For Nora, life in Wanneroo has changed so much over time. While she misses the
simple way life used to be, she has really enjoyed seeing the development and growth of the area. One of Nora’s favourite memories of life in Wanneroo was being named Belle of the Ball at the Agricultural Ball.

Ena Taylor
For Ena, the early days of life in Wanneroo were an exciting adventure full of sunshine and new horizons. In 1966 Ena came over to Perth on a ship called the Fairstar with the couple’s four children; three months after Philip had arrived to set the family up in Wanneroo. They loved the sunny days compared to the grey days back in the UK and were very excited to live near the beach.
When the children were high school age, they attended St Mary’s School in Perth. At the time there was only one bus to and from the city each day so Ena and three mums from school would take turns driving the children for the school run. Eventually, Ena decided things needed to change and she went to see the manager of Transperth to ask for more buses. Her request was granted.
Philip Taylor
Yerko ‘Jerry’ Susac
Once a year, Jerry would go to see the motorbike racing at Yanchep National Park. Apart from the Wanneroo Show and the shire dances, it was the only entertainment available at the time.
When Philip first moved to Kemp Street in Wanneroo, there were only 3,000 people in the whole shire. He remembers living in a shack on Mullaloo Beach where, at the time, there was nothing else around for miles. When the family moved to Wanneroo in 1966, Philip began working at the Diamond Chicken Farm. He worked there for several years before leaving in 1970.
At that time Philip, with partners Murray Hamilton, Angus Horwood and Don Blaxell, built the largest chicken farm in WA, Dress Circle Farm. He has also been a hobby wine maker for 30 years, setting up a small vineyard with friends at Yaranary Farm in Nowergup. Philip has loved living in Wanneroo and all the opportunities life in Australia presented to him.
Angelo and his family moved to Australia in 1955. Angelo and Cristine lived with his parents in Kiro Road, Carabooda after they were married. The family worked together in the market gardens for several years.
In the 1970s Angelo and Cristine took over a property in Carabooda and established their own market garden property.
Cristine’s first memory of life in the City of Wanneroo was getting everything delivered because there were no shops, roads or even electricity in the early days. Born in Austria on 4 May 1944, Cristine moved to Australia with her parents in 1956. She moved to Wanneroo to marry, travelling by train in a journey that took 10 days.
For Cristine, Wanneroo has always been a beautiful place to call home for the whole family, with plenty of special memories.
Cristine Tsalis
Angelo Tsalis
Born on 3 March 1941 to market gardener parents, Jerry has lived his whole life in Wanneroo. One of six children, Jerry remembers how back then, everything revolved around work. He worked with his parents in the gardens until he was 15.
One of his standout memories of life in the City of Wanneroo is going to the open air cinema at Wanneroo Shopping Centre, back when it was a little shop and a post office.
She has met a lot of people and they have all grown older here together.

If you visit the Wanneroo Library on a Tuesday morning, you may well hear the clicking of needles and the hum of quiet chatter interrupted by peals of laughter. That’s because it’s the regular meeting place of the Wanneroo Joondalup Knit and Natter group. Ranging in age from early 20s through to their 90s, the ladies donate their time and skills to knit much-needed items for a range of local charities while also enjoying a good old ‘natter’. The non-profit group is made up of around 120 members, the majority of whom live in the City of Wanneroo. Founding member Eleanor Rigby said most members meet weekly at the Wanneroo Library and Edith Cowan University in Joondalup. “Around 35 ladies are unable to travel due to mobility issues but still want to help, so their knitted items are collected from their homes,” Eleanor said. “We fondly refer to them as outsource knitters.” Since the group began in 2011, the group has knitted or crocheted an incredible 28,326 items and these have been donated to a wide range of charities including Tiny Sparks
and Miracle Babies Foundation, Breast Cancer Care WA, HAND (Homeless, At Risk, Needy and Disadvantaged), aged care facilities and animals shelters. “Items such as premmie baby jackets, humidicrib covers, beanies, blankets, knee rugs, shawls, socks, knitted beanies, scarves, socks, jumpers, gloves, chemo caps and animal blankets have all been knitted and crocheted with love and care,” Eleanor said. “Currently we are working on fiddle wristies and fiddle muffs for patients with dementia and Alzheimers and children with physical and mental disabilities.” In addition to providing a valuable service to the community, Knit and Natter also acts as a support group for the members themselves. “Many of the ladies have suffered terrible illnesses but when we get together we can share our worries, shake off the last hospital visit, admire the latest wig or laugh at a silly story,” said Eleanor. “And there’s always a great deal of ‘oohing and aahing’ over the many soft, beautiful items made by other members.”

Eleanor said the knitters had been fortunate to receive feedback from all of the groups and organisations they have assisted. “In some instances they have sent photos and letters from the recipients of our knitted items,” she said. “On more than one occasion these letters have brought us to tears and they certainly inspire us to keep knitting. Our ladies are all very proud of what we do and who we help, and we feel very lucky to be able to spread a little happiness to others. “I would like to thank the City of Wanneroo for the grants they have given us to purchase yarn. Without that support we would not be able to help as many people as we do.” The Knit and Natter group always welcome new members and any donations of yarn. FACILITY
BRAND NEW SKATE PARK KICK-FLIPS INTO WANNEROO
Wanneroo Skate Park has already proved a big hit with young people after it opened at the end of July. The skate park design is suitable for all types of skates, scooters and BMX and features: • a 7-10 foot deep bowl • plenty of lines • a street section • flat rail and quarter pipe • bank with a good curb on it • lots of open flat concrete space. The City’s Youth Services team is working with a group of eight young people aged between 12 and 25 to plan an event to showcase the completed park and the skills of local young people later this year. The young people will be heavily involved in all aspects of planning the event which will include a skate, scooter and BMX competition and other fun activities. Twelve-year-old Elecia Shaw is part of the planning crew and is very excited to be able to use the new skate park. “I love skating because you’re going so fast you just forget about all your worries and everything that annoys you and you feel like you’re on top of the world,” she said.
Steve Rock travelled from Mandurah to try the new skate park. Photo: M. Kennealey-Community Newspaper Group.
“The new skate park has a skate bowl and there aren’t very many around so it’s an awesome thing to have in our area. “It’s really cool and I think it will bring in a bunch of new people and give us a cool place to hang out and skate.” The Wanneroo Skate Park is located at the Wanneroo Showgrounds. BUSINESS BENEFITS FROM COMMUNITY SKILLS BANK Community Skills Bank is a collaborative initiative between the City of Wanneroo and the Wanneroo Business Association and provides opportunities for the community to connect to share skills and learn. The City’s Volunteering Development Officer Glenda Bignell said the City receives many enquiries from people interested in volunteering. “We place volunteers into relevant and available roles within the City and refer them to other agencies that have volunteer programs but quite often their skills and experiences don’t match with the particular roles available,” Glenda said. Community Skills Bank runs every Friday out of Enterprise House and
offers information sessions, events, workshops and discussion groups. Katie Hartrick is a graphic and web designer who thought volunteering would be a good way to give back to the community and meet new people. “I did some volunteer design work for local community groups through the City’s volunteer program,” Katie said. “Glenda introduced the Community Skills Bank to some of her volunteers at a morning tea. While I was there, a member suggested I’d be a good fit for a growing company who needed a freelancer from time to time,” she said. “I met with As One Digital and have been doing work for them consistently since then, I’m very fortunate for the opportunity.”

BUSINESS
David Mureithi runs a tendering business and attended a Community Skills Bank workshop on businesses using innovation to start up or expand. “That’s something that is rarely spoken about for small to medium enterprise businesses. These workshops create space for people with questions and like-mindedness to exchange ideas and learn and that’s a fantastic thing,” David said. FUNDING
CITY FUNDING HELPS SERVE UP CHRISTMAS CHEER
The Wanneroo Christmas Lunch is a free community event that provides a traditional hot lunch, gifts and entertainment to residents in need of company on this special day. The event is organised by One Church in partnership with the City of Wanneroo and local churches. One Church Founding Pastor Trischa Botha said the Christmas Lunch kicked off in 2014 and was an initiative of Mayor Tracey Roberts. “Our community comprises of many immigrants without family support and FIFO families. Mayor Roberts’ goal was to ensure that this event allowed for every person in the City of Wanneroo to have a family friendly place to go on Christmas Day,” Trischa said. “The first year we had about 180 people and last year we had closer to 250 people as word spread,” she said. Twice a year, the City’s Community Funding Program invites community organisations to apply for grants to support events, activities and projects - like this important lunch.

“The City of Wanneroo has provided a grant each year towards the free event. This year, more than $4,000 was provided to cover the cost of providing a beautiful hot lunch and we couldn’t do this without the City’s support,” Trischa said. “The other costs are covered by local churches and businesses with more than 40 community volunteers generously giving their time to make this event happen,” she said.
“We hope that the Christmas Lunch will be a place for the community to belong on one of our most significant holidays.” The City’s community funding round occurs every March and September. Visit wanneroo.wa.gov.au/ CommunityFunding for application form and guidelines.
LOCALS GET INVOLVED WITH THEIR IDEAS The City’s wannagetinvolved workshops were a huge success with like-minded residents coming together to take steps towards developing their community projects. Four community projects were explored which included: Know Your Neighbour/Community BBQ, Beautifying Local Parks, Edible Verges and Evening Art Group for the Community. Mayor Tracey Roberts has praised the community for their enthusiasm to create their own neighbourhood projects. “It is fantastic that so many locals are passionate about building better communities and sharing exciting ideas,” she said. “The workshops inspired people to speak about their projects and flesh them out further with the City on hand to help turn them in to action.” Yanchep resident Dyan Moore plans to start an all-inclusive not-for-profit
organisation called Yanchep Connect which will offer women a safe, social and active environment to connect with other women during the day time. “Yanchep Connect will offer low or no cost activities that are interactive, engaging and low-impact from the simplicity of offering tea and coffee, a place to do craft and activities such as Zumba Gold, Tai Chi, Laughter Yoga and Drum Circle,” Dyan said. “Guest speakers will also be scheduled on a regular basis to deliver health messages and inform about topics women are interested in. “This is aimed to give women the opportunity to be active and feel a sense of belonging. “The wannagetinvolved workshop provided reassurance and reinforcement that I am on the right path. It was a valuable network resource particularly, enabling me to connect with other community groups and establish connections within the City of Wanneroo.” ( 13 )

LOCALS
Dad of three Aaron Pegler would like to bring community members to Frederick Stubbs Park in Quinns Rocks to activate the space. “The park is such a beautifully positioned place for families to relax after the beach and connect with each other,” Aaron said. “We value bringing the community together because in today’s society it seems to be more and more uncommon,” he said. “My partner and I have fallen in love with the Quinns Rocks community and believe with such a beautiful park with stunning views, it needs to be used to its full potential.” Aaron said the workshop educated and inspired local residents to be more active and suggestive in their community. “The interaction and information shared was inspiring. It was well run and great to meet like-minded individuals,” he said.
