A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR TRACEY ROBERTS WELCOME TO THE AUTUMN ISSUE OF WHAT’S HAPPENING MAGAZINE. It is great to hear so many enthusiastic comments from members of the community, who clearly like to keep up with what’s happening in the City and who also diarise ‘not to be missed’ future events. In January, the City hosted the biggest Australia Day citizenship ceremony in the country where 816 residents from 67 countries received their citizenship in front of thousands of family and friends. (Page 4) We heard from our special guest speaker Stacy Dunbar an Australia Day Ambassador. Stacy had

the spotlight on an active group within the City the Northern Suburbs Men’s Shed. This group encourages seniors to keep active whilst they create stunning woodcraft. (Page 10) We also highlight the exciting Heritage Festival in May, which will see lots of community events for the whole family, including a baking competition, picnics and workshops for young people. (Page 6) New in this issue is the featured facility article, (Page 10) where we highlight a facility in the City that residents love - please let us know if you have a facility you enjoy and think we should share with residents and visitors. Finally, it has been a hot summer and whilst some

members of the community love the heat, I know that some are looking forward to the cooler months. Our Volunteer Bushfire Brigades have been very busy, not only within our own City, but also fighting the devastating fires in other local authorities and we thank them for the thousands of hours they volunteer to keep us safe. Even though the summer months have passed, please stay safe at the beach as the warm weather continues. Surf lifesaving patrols will continue until 10 April at Quinns Beach and 30 April at Yanchep Beach. Please also keep safe in your pool. Looking forward to seeing you out and about in the community. Mayor Tracey Roberts JP

FREE HAZARDOUS HOUSEHOLD WASTE DISPOSAL CITY RESIDENTS CAN SAFELY DISPOSE OF HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE FREE OF CHARGE AT THE TAMALA PARK WASTE MANAGEMENT FACILITY. Hazardous waste should not be put in household bins. Residents are reminded that certain chemicals and substances can be extremely dangerous if thrown away incorrectly posing a danger to families, pets and the environment.

RECYCLE

WASTE

Leaks can contaminate soil and groundwater and chemical reactions can cause fires, toxic fumes, poisoning or severe burns. Tamala Park will accept domestic quantities of items including home cleaning chemicals, red fire extinguishers (non-halon), engine coolants, aerosols, fluorescent tubes, pool chemicals, smoke detectors, gas cylinders and household batteries.

‘NO GLASS IN THIS BIN’ RECYCLING EDUCATION CAMPAIGN

RESIDENTS MIGHT HAVE NOTICED A NEW ‘NO GLASS IN THIS BIN’ STICKER ON THEIR GREEN TOP GARBAGE BIN RECENTLY.

On the flip side it also means more useful compost and soil conditioner can be produced at the Resource Recovery Facility in Neerabup.

It is part of a new education campaign run by the City and the Mindarie Regional Council to prevent glass ending up in compost.

The Resource Recovery Facility removes organic matter including lawn clippings, garden greens and food scraps from general garbage and turns it into composted soil conditioner.

Residents are urged to keep whole or broken glass out of the green top bins and only place glass into the yellow top recycling bin. Keeping things like glass jars and bottles out of the general waste stream means glass can be properly recycled and reduces what goes to landfill.

If glass contaminates the compost its potential use is limited. If residents put their glass in the yellow top recycling bin, the Resource Recovery Facility can produce better compost and more of it.

The ‘no glass in this bin’ education campaign will initially target residents in four councils including the City of Wanneroo.

CITY’S CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY LARGEST IN AUSTRALIA The event also celebrated the achievements of residents and community groups who received the City’s Australia Day Awards, Matthew Vine, Ronald Arnold and Wheelchairs for Kids. HUNDREDS OF NEW AUSTRALIAN CITIZENS ‘FLEW THE FLAG’ WHEN THEY PLEDGED THEIR ALLEGIANCE TO THE NATION AT THE CITY OF WANNEROO’S AUSTRALIA DAY CITIZENSHIP CEREMONY. The City hosts monthly ceremonies, and the Australia Day event is by far the biggest of the year. With 816 people from 67 countries making a pledge, the City of Wanneroo again hosted the largest single citizenship ceremony in the country. The event at the Wanneroo Showgrounds was an opportunity to mark the significant occasion with a very special and memorable ceremony attended by more than

two thousand people. The crowd enjoyed a barbeque breakfast, run by the Wanneroo Scouts, with entertainment by the Challenge Brass Band and the powerful voice of Billie Court who sang the national anthem. Inspirational City of Wanneroo resident Stacy Dunbar, an official Australia Day Ambassador, spoke of her determination to make our community a safer place, after enduring a huge personal loss. The City’s newest Australian citizens certainly enjoyed the event, which is a very significant day on the City’s calendar as more than 35 per cent of residents were born overseas.

SIMPLE STEPS TO KEEP SAFE REMEMBER THESE PRECAUTIONS ARE JUST AS IMPORTANT IN THE SUBURBS AS THEY ARE IN RURAL ZONES. Ensure you have installed smoke detectors in your home and they are in working order. Clear all vegetation, rubbish and flammable material away from the walls of your home as they may fuel a fire. A simple tip to remember is to create a 20 metre circle of safety around your home free from all these items. All firewood, timber, petrol and kerosene will also need to be stored well away from your home. Winter brings in fallen leaves. Clean your gutters out, trim branches away from the house and ensure trees are not growing near buildings.

The recollections are complemented by concise historical summaries. The impressive book was launched by Mayor Tracey Roberts in November.

“So much heart has gone into creating this high quality book which offers a snapshot to yesteryear. Discover how people lived, worked and enjoyed their leisure time back in the day,” Mayor Roberts said. Live, Work, Play: Wanneroo Recollections will be a valuable reference book for schools and museums to help teach local history as part of the Australian curriculum. since March 2015, with the more recent St Stephens farmers’ market in Carramar opening stalls in September. The City of Wanneroo is rich in market garden history and encourages activities and events that actively promote healthy lifestyles and eating as well as those that provide business opportunities for the community. The City is proud to support initiatives that recognise good health and wellbeing as essential parts of creating healthy and vibrant communities.

CITY OF WANNEROO

To ensure long term viability of the Eden Beach farmers’ market, Council voted to waive venue hire fees, as well as the public licence fee and application fees for the stall holders, as part of an annual sponsorship agreement. Creating healthy communities is about creating opportunities for healthy food and life choices close to the home. The City urges residents to welcome and support the development of farmers’ markets and local buying opportunities.

Good mates Bob Loveridge, Viv Paust, Ron Smith and John Norman share a laugh whilst enjoying some of their handy woodwork. MATES

PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY: NORTHERN SUBURBS MEN’S SHED

MATESHIP, NEW ADVENTURES, A GOOD LAUGH AND AN ESCAPE FROM THEIR WIVES! Bob Loveridge found retirement too quiet after he’d done his ‘jobs’ around the house. He yearned for something to occupy his time other than days on the golf green. When he connected with the Northern Suburbs Men’s Shed he says he found meaning and lasting mateship. Diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease 10 years ago, Bob is keen to keep his mind and body active. He’s picked up new skills in woodwork making delightful toys, stunning kitchen items and furniture with his new friends. Bob says the men have a good laugh when they get together twice a week and all of them remark on how happy their wives are to get them out of the house.

John Norman heads the group and has guided it from 17 to 32 members in recent times. He says he enjoys the fun and freedom of the shed. Their newest skill is ‘intarsia’ akin to a 3D wooden jigsaw or timber mosaic in coloured wood - a craft that takes deft coordination and lots of patience. Viv Paust is wheelchair bound after two tumours but that hasn’t stopped him getting behind a specially lowered bench to wheel himself up to the lathe. Viv says the Men’s Shed gives his carer wife a well-deserved break and him the chance to share his woodwork knowledge. Ron Smith is the shed’s oldest member, but you wouldn’t know it. He is cheeky and quick witted and as proud of his 18 grandchildren and three great grandchildren as he is of the wood work he creates.

Members of the Men’s Shed speak fondly of the warm welcome they received and in turn extend to new members when they become ‘part of the family’. They currently meet in Gnangara and are looking for a new space to call home, perhaps a disused shop or workshop. The men smile when they talk about recently buying a defibrillator for the shed with the help of generous community support - just in case - after all they are all getting on in years. For information on the Northern Suburbs Men’s Shed, please contact John Norman on 0417 849 509.

The RFID tags will be able to identify and track all items, bringing the City’s libraries into line with many others across the State and around the world. The new system cuts the time members spend waiting for books to be borrowed and returned, and increases the time library staff are available to assist members. The project started in January with staff and volunteers placing RFID tags into library items, with the new system expected to be ready by the middle of the year. [ 13 ]
