Just as quickly as vaccines entered the state of Ohio in the last few months, health professionals endeavored to administer them. Westerville Division of Fire (WFD) Chief Brian Miller said the process has been fast-paced and largely unpredictable, but moved as efficiently as can be expected. “Anything we were involved with has developed really quickly in the first days of vaccine deployment,” said Chief Miller. “It was all driven by supply provided to the state, but we were able to move quickly when asked.” In February, WFD quickly assembled a vaccine strike team during “Phase 1B” of deployment for older adults. Firefighter/ medics, including Chief Miller and Deputy Chief Mindy Gabriel, vaccinated more than 100 seniors at two Westerville senior/ assisted living apartment complexes. The clinics, coordinated through Franklin County Public Health, offered relief for members of these vulnerable communities. “At the time, we were coming on up the full year mark since the pandemic really hit home in the U.S., so the sense of gratitude and relief filled the room,” said Chief Miller. “To be on the EMS side of pandemic management at the beginning and vaccine deployment near the end has been something we will never forget.”

Chief Miller says WFD works closely with the public health agencies as a standby agency for ongoing vaccine distribution. There are plans ranging from small to mass participation capabilities. The state of Ohio opened vaccination requirements to all adults in March. WFD stands ready to be activated and was integral to organizing a vaccination clinic for essential frontline workers the same month. “We’re encouraged by the demand for the vaccine,” he said. “On the public health side of the issue, this is the best tool we have to get back to a pre-COVID way of life.” For the most up-to-date information regarding vaccine resources, please visit www.westerville.org/covid19. The Westerville Division of Fire worked together with Mifflin Township, Truro Township, Upper Arlington, Grandview, Jackson Township, Madison Township and Jefferson Township fire divisions in collaboration with partners at Franklin County Public Health at a vaccination clinic for essential frontline workers at John Glenn International Airport. Together they vaccinated 415 people.
