SUSTAINABLE INTERFACE With its unique location between the Green City, the Productive city and the Living City, the new Marina del Prat Vermell neighborhood has the potential to become a self-sufficient Sustainable Interface between them, expanding the possibilities of living and working within the city.

THE GREEN CITY The existing streets, with their Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS), are extended and become Green Fingers that reconnect the neighborhood with the green lung of Montjuïc mountain.

THE PRODUCTIVE CITY The city’s lack of adequate spaces for productive activities is tackled by introducing thick Robust Plinths that have the adaptability of the industrial spaces nearby, and where any use is possible, including light urban manufacturing and local production that make the city’s economy more resilient.

THE GREEN CITY

THE LIVING CITY On top of these plinths, Living Toppings enable any desired lifestyle that encourages a low ecological footprint and seeks to build a strong community.

SUSTAINABLE INTERFACE A mixture of these cities is developed in The Workshop House for City Starters, a new social housing typology that provides affordable living and working spaces for starting economic and social initiatives. Between two Green Fingers, a Robust Plinth with workshops of all sizes has work space for residents and neighbors, becoming a social focus. On top, a Living Topping of lofts provides spaces for living and working. On the roof, there’s a large collective and productive garden with views over the port and the sea.

THE MARINA DEL PRAT VERMELL NEIGHBORHOOD AS A SUSTAINABLE INTERFACE The new Marina del Prat Vermell neighborhood has a unique and privileged location between the Green City, the Productive city and the Living City, and by adopting the best aspects of each of them it can become a Sustainable Interface between them, achieving high levels of sustainability (environmental, economic and social). This Sustainable Interface is formed by the following elements:

ROBUST PLINTHS PRODUCTIVE CITY

collective roofs with gardens, energy and food production

Green fingers (Green City)

housing offices etc

Streets and public spaces that extend the green of the Montju誰c mountain towards the city. These green fingers cross the neighborhood and structure the urban landscape.

commerce facilities offices urban productive uses

Robust plinths (Productive City) A thick ground floor of three levels is proposed that greatly expands the possible programs at the ground floors, including the possibility of productive uses compatible with housing, like light urban manufacturing. Living toppings (Living City) On top of this thick ground floor, all possibilities of low ecological footprint and community-building housing and other uses are enabled.

Upper levels accomodate any desired living and working typologies. Roofs are intensively used by collective gardens and energy and food production.

The Robust Plinths amplify the variety and intensity of ground floors usage by providing flexible additional space for activities at the base of the buildings. These activities help to activate the streets and the public spaces.

Library

The Robust Plinths expand the range of activities that can take place at street level, with a special emphasis on the live+work posssibilities within the city. The Plinths also ease and increase the adaptability possibilities, and even reversibility, in response to any future demographic or economic changes.

SOCIAL STRATEGIES OFFERING AFFORDABLE LIVE + WORK SPACES FOR STARTING INITIATIVES WITHIN THE CITY

18

The proposal tackles the issue of affordable working spaces for starting economic and social initiatives that usually find it difficult to stay within the city.

ROBUST PLINTH SHARED WORKSHOPS

The Workshop House offers space to live and work to citizens who apply for them on an affordable subsidized rent.

13

18

Thus, a comunity of people who work and live in the same building can appear, and initiatives and ideas can crossfertilize. Shared spaces for socializing include: 12 Generous roof garden with views over the neighbohood, the

port and the sea 13 Shared workshops and cafĂŠ at the ground floor. The shared

11

GREEN FINGERS

workshops at the ground floor offer a space for socializing and meeting between the inhabitants of the building, but can also be used by the neighbors and become a meeting space between inhabitants and neighbors. This fact links the proposal with the recent industrial and artisanal past of the area, with still many neighbors who have high manual skills that they can use and share.

The entrance to the workshops is done through a porch, from the sharp corner of the triangle, where two of the Green Fingers meet. The porch doubles as a terrace for the workshop’s café. The largest workshops with double and triple height have direct access from the outside for loading and unloading. LIVING TOPPINGS LOFTS THE GALLERY Stemming from the tradition of the Eixample block’s inner façades and the Mediterranean Modernist tradition, the gallery is a non-climatized buffer area for each loft, betwen inside and outside. In winter, it becomes a wintergrrden. In summer, it can be opened to provide for an outdoors room and allow natural cross-ventilation and breeze.
