Theme Introduction

Words from Prof. Ip

Evolution It is generally believed that by the year 2030, over 30% of the worldʼs human labour (or around 500 million jobs) will be replaced by robots and intelligent agents derived from Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies. Job types such as taxi drivers, truck drivers, counter staff in banks or fast food restaurants, telephone receptionists, will no longer be performed by human; similar to the fact that many factory jobs have been replaced by industrial robots over the past twenty years. At the same time, new job types or professions would be created - data scientists, robot trainers, affective computing engineers, user-experience designers, etc., to name a few. Some of you may think that such large-scale elimination of certain job types is unprecedented and unique to the 21st Century. But no, large-scale elimination or ʻextinctionʼ of existing job types and creation of new job types had occurred during the past three industrial revolutions. ʻExtinctionʼ, being one of the distinctive phenomena in the Theory of Evolution, implies that if we cannot adapt to changes and stay competitive, we will be eliminated. ʻSurvival of the Fittestʼ happens in Nature as well as in the job market. In the 21st Century, the key to ʻevolveʼ successfully in the job market lies in the development of an ability – the ability to pursue lifelong learning, which is the ʻongoing, voluntary, self-motivated pursuit of knowledgeʼ and acquisition of new skills for personal or professional growth. Lifelong learning is not an innate ability, instead, we would have acquired the skill to pursue self-direct and independent learning through our university education. It is just a matter of continue to practice this skill after graduation and throughout our life as a way to stay competitive in the job market and ensure self-sustainability in the society. Technologies may replace human in certain jobs, it is human who develops the new technologies that in turn create new jobs. Clearly, the evolution of the human minds that results from our university education will continue to fuel the evolution of jobs.

Words from Wilson

As Charles Darwinʼs famous quote goes, “It is not the strongest of the species that survives, nor the most intelligent, but the one most responsive to change”. Hall 2, among 11 halls, is one of the smallest halls in terms of student capacity, yet apparently it is becoming a success story of evolution in the Student Residence with its high responsiveness to changes under the strong RM leadership of Dr Ray Cheung in the past 3 years. By now, Hall 2 is one of the most robust halls with several arrays of life-enriching events/activates throughout the year. Just to name a few, other than the PEK Cup, Hall 2 spearheaded the SPECIAL Hall Night Talks, becoming a well-acclaimed brand-name among residents; Hall 2 boasted its hiking and BBQ with active and high participation rate; Hall 2 hosted a series of cooking and food sharing effective in bonding the friendship among residents, and among all, Hall 2 has set an ambitious mission of enabling 80% of its residents with the caliber of coding as an essential survival kit in the AI era.

In this highly competitive knowledge-based economy, to walk out of oneʼs comfort zone and effect changes are indeed difficult and many times painful, but not to change could be fatal in this fast-paced global village. In Hall 2, we see each tiny effort builds on the next, brick by brick with evolution into a hall with a vivid culture gradually taking root with a brand-new identity reborn. This is a miracle and join efforts of all stakeholders in Hall 2 over the years past. Life is full of ups and downs and evolution takes time, trials and errors and constant flow of efforts. However, evolution is not the end but an ongoing process, demanding a positive attitude and readiness for changes for a better world. So do embrace every challenge in life as an opportunity for evolving and deriving the best out of your life. Wilson Lam Director Student Residence Office

Residence Tutors

1/F & 2/F

Jerry

Hi everyone. IĘźm Jerry, Residence Tutor of 1/F and 2/F. ItĘźs my 4th and last year living in Hall 2 and I love this hall so much. I am a senior CS student. As you can see, I am very good at programming and IT-related stuff. In this hall, I am in charge of the IT Team, Scholarship

Team, and Entrepreneur Team. Here I would like to highlight my contribution to IT team, as I am the co-founder of IT team and it is my 3rd year to be in this team. We organized a series of IT activities,

maintaining our hall website, and organized two Hackathon event (for the first & second time in CityU)! If you are talented in IT as-

pects, please do not hesitate to join this team! Serving as an RT in

Hall 2 is an enjoyable experience. If you are willing to contribute to

our hall, please do not hesitate to apply for an RT. Time to talk about myself. I am from Chengde, a small town in the northern part of mainland China. My favorite sport is soccer and I love to watch

animes or play CS:GO (Sometimes I declare my major as Count-

er-Strike for CS) in my free time. I am here in Hong Kong because of

my devotion to this city. Time flies and it is time to say bye to Hall 2, CityU and Hong Kong. I am about to pursue my master's degree in the U.S. next year and I will miss this place, and most importantly,

you, for sure. If you miss me just like how much I miss you, maybe you can access my personal website via lpzjerry.github.io and find my contact information. I am always willing to talk to my old and new friends.

3/F & 4F

V eronica Hi everyone, I am Veronica. This is my second year of living in

hall2. I am very glad that I have the opportunity to be the RT this year. I am responsible for the 3&4th floor. Our Hall is really a

warm place like home, everyone here is nice and kind. Throughout this year, I have accumulated a lot of wonderful memories.

Also the position of RT has taught me a lot, it is really an “unforgettable experience”.I really encourage all of you to try to take

the post if you really love hall2. Being a prosperian is wonderful, I hope all of you feel in the same way. Enjoy your hall life here:D

5/F & 6/F

Bauhinia Hello everyone! This is Bauhinia, the tutor responsible for 5/F

and 6/F. This is my second year of serving as a RT. To me, Hall 2 is a big and warm family. I have met lots of lovely local and

international friends here, we gathered, we chatted and we spent a lot of good times together. This year, I mainly responsible for PEK competitions and the SPECIAL Hall Night Talk series. I am glad that our sports team players have tried the very best to

fight for the honour of our hall, and our managers also have provided continued support for backing up all our activities.

Throughout this year, I have earned many precious memories

with all of you! Time files, memories stay. The Hall life is undoubtedly an important part of my university memories!

7/F & 8F

Alice I am Alice, a final year student studying Mathematics. I have

lived in this hall for three years. I am so glad that I can be an RT and responsible for the 7th and 8th floor. I am always aiming to promote a friendly atmosphere between multiple races, cultures and genders in both academic and non-academic aspects

through hall activities. For example, I mainly work with Special Hall Night Talk team this year. Under Dr. RayĘźs supervision and with his great support, our team held monthly talks that pro-

vides opportunities for residents to approach and learn from the renowned elites in the society. I am also active in IT workshop

series and CityHack Hackathon that emphasize “coding-every-

body, innovation and cooperation. These very experiences are derived from my early passions of sharing, and further lead to my awareness of the value of passing down knowledge to

people from different backgrounds. My sense of mission and

personality gradually turn me into a deliverer of knowledge and value. Thanks to hall 2, I am able to learn and build up my

strength and personality here together with friends I met here!

9/F & 10/F

Fiona I am Fiona YAN, a year3 student majoring in Finance. This is my second year living Hall 2. And the first year, with great honor,

serve as a RT responsible for 9th and 10th floor. It is a unforgettable memory to be a part of Hall 2, where I meet my friends,

where I get a taste of home. ThatĘźs also why I applied to be a RT initially. I want to take care of others as much as I was taken

care of by my RT. However, I gained far more than I expected

through my experience as a RT, which is about multitasking and prioritizing ability, about effective communication ability, about problem-shooting ability. It is about dozens of abilities, which

would be extremely important for oneĘźs career and life. For me,

RT is a position where you encounter different challenges everyday, where a small mistake can make a huge impact. But I am not afraid and even so appreciate these challenges, because I

have the generous support from Dr. Ray, from our team, from all the hallmates. It is these challenges and help that make me better, much better!

I would like to say thank you, to our Hall Master, Dr. Ray, to other 5 RTs, to all of you. Once again, I am so glad to be with you all!

11/F

Nelor Hi all! Iʼm Li Yujie Nelor, 11/F RT from Mainland China majoring in Criminology. I have all kinds of hobbies but Iʼd say I love

music the most. Iʼm always ready to try new things, gain new

experiences, and meet new friends. Also I do love exciting activities like bungee jumping or just roller coasters!

This year Iʼm responsible for finance, RA liaison and discipline.

Four years of living in hall 2 has made me proud of who I am as a Prosperian. To me, hall2 means more than just a place to live, but also a big warm home. I have loved living here both as a

resident and a residence tutor. Iʼll be working and studying Juris Doctor after graduating from CityU. So Iʼll be in HK for quite a

long time (at least for now). All prosperians feel free to catch up with me if you can! :D

These problems consist of land problems, water problems, and air problems. One of the main sources of these problems is rubbish. The volume of rubbish is increasing. We can find many types of rubbish everytime and everywhere. Commonly, rubbish consists of residue of foods, plastics, leaves, and many others. This rubbish comes from many ways, such as, houses, schools, factories, and so on, including every person. Today, we can produce 1200 ton rubbish/ day. If we cannot minimize production of rubbish, day by day, the level of rubbish will be over limit and make some disasters. Hall life is too short, Don’t waste it reading my introduction. Be frd ok?

Hall Activities Recap

The Joint Hall 25710 Orientation camp was held on September 21-23. Freshmen of the four halls spent 3 days and 2 nights togehter getting know with each other and engaing in various exciting activities like mass games, detective game, tug of war, watter battle and bonfire.

P.E.K. Basketball Women The first PEK Cup competition in semester B is a basketball match. In addition to the male basketball match, our girls also did an excellent job in the activities. This year, our hall has a team of highly competitive players, namely Oscar, Carina, Pemberley, Jay, Mimi, Elanor, Kwan and Tings. With their brilliant work ethic and their outstanding teamwork, our players finally got the second run-up for our hall, as well as the respect from the other halls and our support. We really appreciated the girls’ enthusiasm and hard-training. Their placement was absolutely remarkable.

CityHack 2019 - Smart Campus or Smart Fintech with AI

CityHack 2019 was the second iteration of CityU Hackathon (i.e. CityHack) organised by CityU HSBC Prosperity Hall IT Committee. It is designed to provide students with a unique opportunity to create a "hack" through softwares such as Mobile APPs or websites. This year, our Hackathon was conducted on 26th and 27th January and the topic was Smart Campus or Smart Fintech with AI. A total of 21 teams took part in this challenge. Each team had 3-5 members from different universities and different countries. Moreover, most group members were from a variety of majors and programs such as Computer Science, Electronic Engineering and so on. During such events, students with different academic backgrounds may perform different roles such as team leader, developer, and marketing guru! They can feel the joy of cooperation and competition by giving free play to his or her originality and putting what they have learnt to practice in real world scenarios. After a fierce competition, the position of second runners up went to “ ZUCKERBOTS” team and the first runners up was claimed by “HACKERDEW” team. The champions award and the most popular team award went to “ Ching Ho Ball” team for their creative ideas. They won the competition by creating an APP which could "know" user's feelings and emotions via conversation, and were applauded by the judges and other participants for their excellent and powerful presentation skills! We thank our sponsors, SenseTime, imsure life and BNP Paribus. Also, many thanks to AI Lab, SRO and KTO for their support! Thank you to our genius IT team for organizing this creative and successful event! See you in next year!

Cooking Competition Our Hall 2 is famous for its cooking culture and we promote "Eat Healthy and Stay Healthy", so we usually hold a cooking competition in each semester which is an opportunity for our residents to demonstrate their cooking skills. This semester, it fell on February 17th and each floor will have 1-2 representatives in a group to prepare the special dishes from their hometown and introduce their home culture to other residents. Let's take a look at these dishes. For example, we have residents who are from Fujian Province, they prepared "Buddha Jumps Over the Wall (ä˝›衳墙)", which is a signature dish in their hometown. And other residents also brought their favourite dishes, like American style banana salad, Hong Kong style lemon chicken wings and so on. And the winners of this competition are Pakistani residents from 7F and 8F who prepared their authentic dishes like Pakistani-style rice and won the praise of everyone. Definitely, all the dishes were impressive and creative! We learn how to cook these great dishes from each other and what is better, learn the culture of their hometown from these dishes! Best applause to the greatest cooks in Hall 2!

Barbaque Togather On the sunny morning of 2nd March, dozens of our Prosperians departed for a short hike and BBQ atop Lions Rock. With beaming smiles, all members were thrilled for this much awaited annual BBQ. Taking in the fresh mountain air, our Hall mates chatted away, while feasting on the delicious food organized by the prompt RA members. To add to the excitement, Dr Ray joined us with his family and filled the atmosphere with great fervor and drew it to an end. To sum it up in a phrase, we shared a great morning with each other, perfectly like a big Prospeian family.

Singing Contest Prosperians’ Voice

Held on 27 February 2019, The Prosperians’ Voice was an important annual event in Hall 2. At this night, residents had the chance to showcase their singing talent either individually or as a group. Using their beautiful voices, the participants had put up a great performance with all their hearts through a wide variety of songs as the audience swayed to the rhythm. All in all, it was a memorable night as the hidden gems in Hall 2 were discovered.
