A raft of plans are in place to ensure CityU marks its 25th Anniversary celebrations in appropriate style. The outstanding efforts of the six designated working groups in charge of organising key events and other responsibilities will come to fruition throughout the course of the silver jubilee year, to the benefit of the entire CityU community. From social and sporting events to conferences featuring a host of
distinguished scholars, the anniversary celebrations put in place by the working groups promise a broad array of activities that will appeal to students, staff, faculty and alumni. 為迎接25周年銀禧校慶,香港城市大學 (城大)已做好各項準備,安排各項主要 慶祝活動的六個專責小組做了許多工作, 務求銀禧紀念期間的慶祝活動順利進行。 工作小組將為學生、教職員和校友舉辦多 種類型的活動,包括聯誼聚會、運動項目 以及知名學者講座等。

3 Strategic development goes to The Court 顧問委員會聆取重大發展新舉措 would equip the University to meet new challenges. Among the major objectives are to meet the challenge of the threeto four-year transition of undergraduate curriculum structure and to empower the faculty and academic leaders at different levels to contribute fully to the University.

The Court was briefed on new strategic development measures adopted by University management focusing on organisational restructuring, at its second meeting on 11 December. The meeting was presided over by Dr Norman Leung Nai-pang, ProChancellor of CityU, who extended his warm welcome on behalf of the Court to Professor Way Kuo, University President, and Mr Leung Chun-ying, the new Council Chairman. The Court is one of the three statutory bodies, together with the Council and the Senate, established under the CityU Ordinance, responsible for providing advice and support on the general policies and work of the University. Dr Leung believed that with the Council Chairman's guidance, CityU would benefit from the President's capable leadership in planning and executing the long-term strategic development of the University. "I'm confident CityU will achieve even greater things in the near future," said Dr Leung. Professor Kuo reported that the University was in the middle of preparing the five-year strategic plan and assured the Court the new organisation chart
A clear line of leadership and accountability, according to Professor Kuo, will complement empowerment. Teaming up to tackle climate change 城大與中科院合作研究氣候變化 3
CityU has joined forces with the prestigious Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) to set up a joint laboratory through its affiliate, the Institute of Atmospheric Physics (IAP), to conduct atmospheric research that will have far-reaching effects on understanding climate change, especially in southern China and the Pearl River Delta region. By combining the existing research capabilities of CityU and IAP, the joint laboratory will engage in a
comprehensive study of the overall climatic changes taking place in China and the wider Asia Pacific region. The collaboration marks a significant recognition by CAS of CityU’s competitive edge in both basic and applied sciences and only came to fruition after CAS assessed the research capabilities of 21 other established and prospective joint laboratories. 城大與中國科學院(中科院)合作,與該 院轄下的大氣物理研究所攜手建立一所聯 合實驗室,其研究工作對探索華南及珠江 三角洲地區的氣候變遷將有深遠影響。 該實驗室將整合城大與大氣物理研究所現 有的研究優勢,對中國乃至亞太區的整體 氣候變遷進行綜合研究。中科院評估了21 家現有及計劃中的聯合實驗室的研究能 力,最後決定與城大合作成立上述聯合實 驗室;這一合作彰顯中科院對城大在基礎 研究及應用研究兩方面優勢的明確認可。

The CityU Chapter of Beta Gamma Sigma Installation Ceremony and First Induction Ceremony was held by the College of Business on 26 November. Chapter Honouree Awards were conferred upon Dr Joseph Yam Chi-kong, GBS, JP, Chief Executive, Hong Kong Monetary Authority, and Dr Liu Changle, JP, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Phoenix Satellite Television Company, for their contributions to Hong Kong society. Beta Gamma Sigma is a society accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB) International, which invites outstanding business schools to establish collegiate chapters.

7 CityU tops research grant fund allotment 城大獲研資局批出最高研究金 Three research projects led by CityU have been endorsed by the Research Grants Council Collaborative Research Fund 2008/09 under the auspices of the University Grants Committee, with funding totalling HK$16.2 million. CityU was granted the highest amount of funding among local universities this year and CityU’s rate of successful proposals was also the highest. The nanotechnology projects are led by Professor Michel Andre Van Hove and Professor Lee Shuit-tong of the Department of Physics and Materials Science, while the food safety project is led by Professor Paul Lam Kwansing of the Department of Biology and Chemistry.

CityU recently hosted the International Conference on Social Capital and Volunteering in Modern Ageing Cities: Building Intergenerational Inclusion. The conference, held from 15-17 December, was organised by the Department of Applied Social Studies and coorganised by the Central Policy Unit of the HKSAR Government, University of Macau and University of Salford. The

Rowing club simply oarsome 划艇學會成績彪炳 The Rowing Club of CityU was crowned men's coxed eight and women's coxless four champions of the Rowing Ladder 2008 of the Hong Kong, China Rowing Association. Elderly students make the grade 城大長者學苑首批學員「畢業」 Thirty-eight diligent elderly students received certificates from CityU at a ceremony on 10 December, after completing their Elderly Academy courses last semester. The Elderly Academy established by CityU last September is an initiative of the Elderly Commission and the Labour and Welfare Bureau to provide an opportunity for senior citizens to enjoy learning as a student. Aged 64 on the average, the students who enrolled last September studied alongside CityU undergraduates, taking courses in Chinese language and culture, social studies, computing and management.

Conveniently located in the centre of Kowloon peninsula, City University of Hong Kong (CityU) has long been constrained by insufficient campus space. To support the introduction of the four-year undergraduate structure in 2012, the University has introduced various measures to improve the campus environment and facilities. We take the opportunity to review the progress of our campus development plan, as revealed by CityU Today in 2006.

Headed by CityU President Professor Way Kuo, the Campus Development Committee under the Management Board oversees campus development. There are five buildings currently in the planning or construction phase, including the Academic and Administration Building, Student Residences Phase 4, Multi-media Building, Community College of City University (CCCU) Building and the CityU (Shenzhen) Research Institute Building.

1. Dr Ellen Ko Law Yin-lan
Dr Ellen Ko Law Yin-lan, Vice-President (Finance and Administration), and exofficio member of the Campus Development Committee, pointed out that the CityU (Shenzhen) Research Institute Building inside the Shenzhen Virtual University Science Park had completed construction of the exterior building in August 2008 and work is now under way on completing the interior and necessary fixtures. Construction on the Multi-media Building and CCCU Building got underway in 2008. Both are due for completion in 2010 and will provide a huge boost to campus logistics. The planned Academic and Administration Building has had its architectural design and site plan endorsed by the Buildings Department and a grant of $570 million (based on September 2005 price index) approved in principle by the University Grants Committee (UGC) in 2007. Rising material and resource prices mean the construction cost has been revised to approximately $1.1 billion and the funding application will be considered by the Public Works Subcommittee of Legco in April. If construction begins this year,

as hoped, it is expected to be open for use in 2012. The building comprises a 12-storey upper block and a lower block near Shek Kip Mei Park. With its northern face linked to the Cornwall Street and student residences, east to the Tak Chee Yuen Staff Quarter, and south to the main campus and the CCCU Building, the Academic and Administration Building will be adjacent to the Multi-media Building, Festival Walk and Kowloon Tong MTR station. The building will provide an additional usable area to the University of approximately 20,000 square metres. The architect is Ronald Lu & Partners (Hong Kong), which was also the builder for the 2008 Olympics equestrian venue. By integrating various elements, the building will provide an interactive, harmonious and inspiring environment for teaching and learning, research, administration and social interaction. Besides being equipped with classrooms, seminar rooms and lecture theatres, it will also have space for catering, group discussion and amenities for students, staff and citizens. “We put an emphasis on the harmonious integration between the University and the local community. The completion of the building will give a facelift to the nearby area and become a district landmark, highlighting the position of CityU and Hong Kong as an education and research hub,” said Dr Ko. In addition to the Academic and Administration Building, the University is pursuing its plan of building the Student Residences Phase 4 at Cornwall Street to generate 700 bed spaces for undergraduates. The plan received UGC approval of a grant of $140 million (price as of September 2005) in principle in 2007. The total construction cost is
13 estimated more recently at $300 million (price as of payment due date), with 25% of the funds to be raised by CityU. The application for grants will be presented and considered by the Public Works Subcommittee of Legco in April.
Sustainable development The Campus Development Committee has set up the Advisory Group on Campus Development and appointed Professor Julia Tao Lai Po-wah, Chief-of-Staff and Acting Vice-President (Development and External Relations), as its chairman to oversee matters regarding campus development. The 2 objectives of the Group are to incorporate education philosophies into campus architecture, integrate existing campus facilities, link up new and existing buildings, relieve the crowded conditions on campus and create research space for students and staff. With her concurrent appointment as Chair of the University Working Group on Campus Master Plan, Professor Tao highlighted how the campus supports the University’s Strategic Plan 2009-2014 Consultation session, produced a few months ago. “CityU endeavours to become a leading university in the world and a hub of knowledge exchange, known for academic research and professional education. Campus development should align with these objectives, to create a green and
practical campus and a vibrant ambience for sustainable internationalisation development.” Professor Tao pointed out that the university campus will undergo its development in three phases. While Phase I (1989-2009) aims to achieve the highest efficiency and maximum effects for the operation of the University, Phase II (2009-2012) focuses on meeting the challenges of the four-year academic structure. In Phase III (2012-2042), the University will review the existing campus facilities and space and plan for longterm development, with an objective of integrating its education philosophies with campus development to realise the visions set by the Campus Master Plan. Local and overseas architects are invited to provide consultancy advice on campus design in a bid to encourage a concerted effort from external and internal parties to build an inspiring and creative campus.
Environmental protection While there is a consensus on the campus infrastructure, what equipment and facilities will accompany the development? Mr Wong Ka-yu, Director of Facilities Management Office (FMO), revealed that all new building designs are environmentally-friendly. Besides tree-planting, all electrical appliances, including light bulbs, pedestrian lamps, cooling machines and water pumps, are

either energy-saving or solar-powered devices. To further save energy and electricity expenses on illumination and air conditioning, the Academic and Administration Building will be installed with high-efficiency glass panes or shading devices and its external walls will have light refraction panels to allow maximum sunlight exposure without raising the temperature inside the building. “At CityU, we are very concerned about energy saving and environmental protection, and will take these into account when formulating plans or making decisions,” said Mr Wong.

Various problems inevitably arise during the construction of a major building project. For instance, during the construction of the Multi-media Building, it was found that the soil at one corner of the site was not firm enough to support the pillars. Therefore, the pillars had to be redesigned and the construction schedule amended. The soil on the hill on which the CCCU Building was built was also too soft, meaning additional retaining walls had to be built to fortify the construction base. These are just some examples
Mr Wong promised that the FMO will exert its utmost effort to minimise the inconvenience to academic and administrative staff, students and visitors during the construction period. At the same time, he hoped all CityU members would be patient and tolerant of the inconveniences as we strove for a better campus to support the University’s longterm development.
“Whether a construction project can be completed on time depends on many factors, including the weather, site and people involved. On the days of heavy rain, construction has to be suspended,” said Mr Wong. “Our biggest challenge is to compete against time to ensure we can have the necessary facilities ready to accommodate the needs of the new academic curriculum in 2012.”

香港城市大學(城大)坐落九龍半島中心,交通便利,然而校舍空間不足是 多年的問題。為了配合政府2012年推行四年本科學制,城大積極推出各項改 善校園環境及設施的措施。早在2006年,《今日城大》已為大家報導了校園 擴建計劃藍圖,今天讓我們一起來看看最新進展。 新建建築 為校園增添姿釆 城大管理委員會轄下的「校園發展委員 會」負責監督校園發展,由校長郭位教授 擔任主席。現階段籌建中或興建中的建築 物共有五座,分別是教學行政大樓、學生 宿舍第四期、多媒體大樓、專上學院大樓 及城大產學研大樓。 副校長(財務及行政)古羅燕蘭博士是 「校園發展委員會」的當然委員。她表 示,位於深圳虛擬大學國家大學科技園內 的城大產學研大樓已於08年8月封頂,現 正進行內部裝修。08年動土的多媒體大樓 及專上學院大樓預計2010年期間竣工,屆 時,城大將有更充裕的空間可供發展。 籌建中的教學行政大樓的建築和地基設計 圖則已獲屋宇署通過,大學教育資助委員 會07年原則上同意撥款五億七千萬元(按 2005年9月份價格)。最新建築費估計約為 11億元(按付款當日價格計算),撥款申 請將於2009年4月交由立法會公務小組委員 會審批。若如期今年動工,可望於2012年

陶教授把校園發展計劃分為三個階段: 1989至2009年屬於校園規劃的第一階段, 以達到最高效率及發揮最大功能為目標﹔ 2009至2012年為第二階段,集中解決學制 三改四帶來的挑戰;2012至2042年為邁向 未來的第三階段,將審視現有校園設計及 空間使用的長遠整體發展,把大學教學理 念融入校園建設中,締造「校園發展總計 劃」願景。在校園規劃上,城大將聘請本 地及海外建築師擔任顧問,集合各方意見 和力量,共同營造具啟發性、創意無限的 校園。

節能為本 保護地球資源 對基本建設,大學上下已有一定概念,但 在配套設施上又將如何呢?物業及設施管 理處處長黃家裕先生表示,每座新大樓 的設施均配合環保、綠化概念。除了植樹 外,所有電器設備,包括光管、路燈、制 冷機及水泵等,皆會使用具能源效益的裝 置或使用太陽能。教學行政大樓的設計將 採用高效節能的玻璃及遮光裝置,並在大 樓外牆添置背陰或光線折射屏,同時盡量 採用自然光,擷取太陽光線而捨其熱力, 以節省照明及空調開支。「城大非常注重 節約能源及環境保護,於制訂計劃及作出 決定時均顧及到這方面的需要,」黃處長 說。 任何建築工程在施工時,必定會遇到各種 各樣的困難。以多媒體大樓為例,打樁工 程期間發現其中一角土質不夠堅硬,不能 承托起樁柱,須重新設計樁柱,因而影響 進度。相反,專上學院大樓卻因興建在山 坡上的緣故,地質鬆散且容易崩塌,在平 整地盤時,需要額外興建護土牆以穩定地 基。這些都是難以預測、又不能避免的困 難。
「建築工程是否能順利進行及準時竣工, 講求天時、地利及人和的配合。先不說人 為因素,舉一個簡單例子:一遇上滂沱大 雨,工程便得暫停,」黃處長說。「對我 們來說,最大的挑戰在於與時間競賽,才 能趕及2012年新學制實施時提供所需空間 及設施。」 黃處長承諾,物業及設施管理處將盡一切 努力減低工程期間對城大師生、職員及訪 客帶來的不便。同時他希望,每位城大人 都能為着大學長遠發展設想,多一點忍耐 及包容,上下一心,使城大擁有更美好的 校園。

19 H.264 is one of several fast motion estimation algorithms of core video encoding compression technology widely used in video conferencing, video telephony and online webstreaming. Over the years, CityU’s Department of Electronic Engineering has been working on this video coding compression technology and its research achievements have been adopted by recognised standard-bearers in the industry. CityU is now at the forefront of the industry and on the verge of creating a new standard to be used around the world. Courtesy of a government grant, the department recently launched a collaboration with three local universities, Hong Kong Applied Science and Technology Research Institute Company, other government departments and the industry to develop the fifth generation of video coding technology. While there might not be any prizes for guessing the new name - H.265 - CityU researchers will be worthy of kudos if it is endorsed by industry as the new international standard.
Cisco Systems, the world leader in network equipment, projects that 90% of online information will be comprised of video data within three years. To overcome the imminent network overload problems caused by the large volume of video data transmission on the internet, and to enhance video quality, the IT industry has been looking for ways to not only expand network bandwidth but also to improve the compression rate of video files. Dr Po Lai-man, Associate Professor from the Department of Electronic Engineering at CityU, has been conducting research on the fast motion estimation algorithms central to compression issues for many years and some of his research achievements have been adopted by the International Telecommunication Union. He points out that information transmission has gradually evolved from a text-based mode to a video-based mode over the years.

“Video transmission has become the prevalent form of communication,” said Dr Po. “In the old days, Confucius delivered his lectures verbally and his students transcribed his words into written notes and compiled them as the Analects of Confucius. Nowadays, many universities videotape their faculty members’ lectures and class demonstrations and upload the videos onto websites such as YouTube. This helps disseminate knowledge to a wide audience, near and far.” Dr Po pointed out that the extensive application of video conferencing, video telephoning and digital videotaping already exists. The IT industry’s next target will be the improvement of video quality. YouTube, for example, has actually moved towards high definition video. However, the constraints of video quality and file size still pose a challenge in terms of broadcasting, saving and viewing videos which is where the new standard being devised by CityU researchers come in. There has been a steady development of video coding technology over the

past 20 years. For example, the current standard H.264 is now being used for high definition broadcasting by local TV stations. The compression of TV signals by H.264 video coding technology makes it possible for TV stations to provide better quality images with existing bandwidth and save space when broadcasting standard definition or high definition TV programmes. “The new H.265 Standard improves upon the H.264 technologies, upgrading compression capability by 50%. The new standard will make reference to the one set by the European International Telecommunication Union and its development will involve many other research institutes around the world. It is hoped a new standard can eventually be implemented and recognised around the world,” said Dr Po. In regards to the development of the new standard, CityU is responsible for developing the fast motion estimation algorithm. Dr Po explained that the algorithm can save space for video signals by omitting the repeated inputs of identical image data that occurs during transmission. The collaborative research project will last for 18 months. Dr Po said it was difficult to assess whether a breakthrough in the new technology could be achieved in such short period of time, but the collaboration would definitely enhance technology exchange and improve local research standards.

城大電子工程學系副教授布禮文博士多年 來一直從事快速運動估計算法研究,有些 成果獲得國際電訊聯盟採用。他表示,經 過數千年的演變,資訊傳遞方式已從文字 逐漸轉變為視訊。 「視訊的傳遞愈來愈重要,」布博士說。 「孔子的《論語》由孔子口述、學生筆錄 而成;時至今日,外國許多著名大學已將 教授講課和課堂上的示範拍成視訊影片, 上載到YouTube之類的網站上,任何人都 可以瀏覽,使知識傳播得更廣、更遠。」 布博士指出,視像會議、視像電話、數碼 攝錄等設備目前已得到廣泛使用,下一步 要追求的是質素。視訊設備無論在廣播、 存儲及播放上仍須面對畫面質素或檔案容 量的限制,甚至YouTube也已開始追求高 清質素。

In addition to the human side of communication, we also emphasise the application of advanced technology. The University has undertaken an investment of more than HK$10 million and built state-of-the-art facilities, including a digital television studio, an advertising design studio, a video editing laboratory, a digital audio recording studio, an eye-tracking laboratory, a new media laboratory and a web mining laboratory. Our courses on streaming media, interactive advertising, television news production and anchor training are the first of their kind to be offered in Hong Kong. They can expose students to new media technology and ensure their future career development.
What are the special features of the new programme, Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in Media and Communication, to be offered in September 2009? Our new government-funded programme will integrate elements from different disciplines of news reporting, broadcasting and public relations that used to be taught separately in the conventional curriculum. In addition to compulsory subjects such as theory of communication, visual
and textual communication and media research methods, students of our new programme also need to study elective subjects in the four domains of textual media, TV broadcasting, advertising and public relations, and new media. They are required to study at least two subjects in each domain to equip themselves with the knowledge and skills of different forms of media.
Looking ahead, what is the Department’s future direction? We aim to nurture a new generation of cross-media professionals for Hong Kong and the mainland, who have competent knowledge and the skills to suit the future needs of the industry. In terms of teaching and research, we will integrate humanities knowledge with advanced technology. Also, we will collaborate with other departments, for example the School of Creative Media and the Department of Marketing, to offer joint programmes with the objective of becoming a creative education centre that plays a leading role in the Asian Pacific Region.

傳播具有人文的關懷,但我們同時強調新 科技的應用,並投資1000餘萬元,新增 設先進的數碼電視攝製室、廣告設計製作 室、視頻編輯實驗室、音頻編輯實驗室、 眼球追蹤、新媒體使用實驗室及網頁挖掘 實驗室。我們開設的串流媒體、互動廣 告、電視新聞製作與主播訓練等課程在本 港更是首創,希望藉此讓學生接觸最新媒 體技術,以助日後發展。
學系於2009年九月將開辦媒體與傳播 榮譽文學士新課程,具體教授甚麼 內容? 這個政府資助的課程特色是把傳統媒體教 育中新聞、廣播、公關各個獨立分開的領 域融為一體。修讀這門課程的學生除了修 讀傳播理論、視覺與文字傳播、媒體研究 方法等必修科目外,更須按個人興趣在文 字媒體、電視廣播、廣告公關及新媒體等 四個領域選修科目。我們要求學生在每個 領域最少修習兩個科目,藉此讓學生掌握 不同類型媒體的專業知識,並融合不同的 傳播技巧。

As a secondary school student living in Tsing Yi’s temporary housing areas, Brave Chan Yung became acquainted with a group of enthusiastic social workers. He joined an air pollution concern group and spent three days and nights counting the number of chimneys and the number of days of smoke discharge in Tsing Yi. The group presented its findings to the government and urged a reduction of polluting discharges and air quality improvements. Participation in the project reinforced his determination to pursue a career in social work. Three years of study at CityU was another turning point for Brave, during which he transformed from a timid boy into an eloquent, confident speaker. “My career success is closely tied to my education at CityU,” he said. Brave said his teacher, Mr Chan Wingtai, JP, Honorary Research Fellow of the Department of Applied Social Studies at CityU, was a strong advocator of general education who constantly encouraged students to participate in extra-

curricular activities. With his teacher’s encouragement, Brave joined the editorial committee of the Students’ Union and served as Chairman of the Chinese Affairs Association. Those extra-curricular activities significantly enhanced his personal growth and career development. “I find that CityU’s social work graduates all have a strong sense of social commitment and community involvement,” he said.
33 Brave is currently deputy chairman of the New Territories Association of Societies, where he has been working for 14 years since graduation. Appointed by the government, he also serves as a councillor of the North District Council and a committee member of the Commission on Youth. “My sense of job satisfaction stems from the respect, support and commendation of the residents in the district. They are also the driving force behind me, motivating me to work persistently and diligently to serve the local residents,” he said. Besides local affairs, Brave also cares greatly for CityU. To support the development of the alma mater, he serves
not only as an Alumni Ambassador, but also a member of the advisory committee for the Department of Applied Social Studies. For graduates and students of CityU, he encourages them not to underestimate themselves, but to have self-confidence borne of an accurate assessment of their strengths. “Like water, our students can adapt and adjust themselves very well to whatever changes there may be in the external environment. Also, similar to water that can penetrate a rock through constant dripping, our students can realise their immense potential with perseverance,” he said.
中學時期住在青衣臨時房屋區的陳勇結識一群熱心的社工,並參加由社工組 織的空氣污染關注小組,用了三日三夜時間統計青衣的煙囪數量及排放日 子,然後向政府部門反映問題,要求減排、改善空氣質素。他原本就對時事 很感興趣,這次經驗令他明白,社工專業非常適合自己。 三年的大學生活使陳勇脫胎換骨,由中學 時期的「怕羞仔」搖身一變成為「口水 佬」。他說:「我事業上取得的成績與城 大三年的培育密不可分。」 陳勇表示,當年大學高級講師陳永泰先生 強調通識教育,鼓勵他們積極參與學會活 動,把他們培育成「周身刀」的社工。他 曾擔任「國是學會」會長及參加學生報工 作,這些經驗對他個人的成長及人生發展 起到極大作用。 陳勇說:「我發現城大社工系畢業生對社 會的承擔及投入感都很強。」 畢業後,陳勇在新界社團聯會工作,轉眼 已14年。今日,他已是新界社團聯會常務 副理事長,更獲特區政府委任為北區區議 員及青年事務委員會委員。「工作上的成 就感來自街坊的尊重、熱情支持和讚賞。 這些是我的精神動力,鼓勵我堅持不懈, 努力為市民服務,」陳勇說。
除了關心市民,陳勇亦特別關心城大,既 擔任校友大使,又是應用社會科學系顧問 委員會成員。他勉勵城大學生及畢業生對 自己要有自信,正確評估自己,而不要妄 自菲薄。 他又以「水」比喻城大學生說:「城大學 生適應力強,無論環境如何轉變都能自我 調節,泰然處之。只要堅持,則能水滴石 穿,更能借風起浪,爆發出內蘊的巨大潛 能。」

a passionate foundation This has been my belief throughout my 15 years of service with CityU. At the beginning of my career, my research interest was the study of major infrastructure and construction projects in Hong Kong. Then I shifted my focus to infrastructure development in Guangzhou. These studies have not only enhanced my career development but also enriched my teaching.
It is important for a person to attain an accomplishment. However, its success often depends on many internal and external factors including capability, opportunity, perseverance, diligence, determination, knowledge and experience. I feel contented if I can find a meaningful job that interests me, so I can work on it with passion and dedication. It is difficult to define accomplishment and I am not used to using words like “success”. I feel satisfied if something can be achieved through my dedicated input. If it can be of help to other people, then it is definitely an accomplishment. Monetary return does not matter much any more.

Through the study of these construction projects, I learned about the latest building technology. And more importantly, my outlook was broadened. In the past, I had only focused on making use of technology to construct large, complex buildings. I neglected the development of the city and community. I am no longer shortsighted in this regard, having gained more knowledge and experience. I am now more aware of the relationship between nature and urban development and will factor this into future assignments. A progressive city cannot put development on hold. When I study construction projects, I focus not only on the technological aspects but also on the social development of the whole city. I set myself the goal of visiting all the streets and alleyways to fully comprehend the impact of a development on the city as a whole. I use different methods to record the complex development processes so this wisdom can be passed on to the next generation.
35 For young students, understanding this process can enhance their knowledge of society and assist them in appreciating the subtlety and social factors associated with building development. My academic pursuits have linked with my teaching and professional development during the past ten years. I hope I can fully utilise my research to open students’ minds and guide them towards an appreciation of the beauty of building development.
做人有所作為很重要,但往往需要 配合很多內外因素,例如才能、際 遇、毅力、勤奮、意志或識見等。 對我來說,找到一個適合自己興趣 和感到有意義的工作,從而滿懷熱 愛、甚至激情投入,於心已足矣。 甚麼是有所作為?我不慣用成功這 類字眼。憑自己的心神投入,最終 達到一定成效或建樹,自己感到滿 足,進而可以幫到他人,肯定是有 所作為的表現。有否取得利益回 報,已無關宏旨。 我在城大前後十五年,正是懷着這份激 情,先是跟進研究香港各項大型工程和建 設,後又把注意力放在跟進整個廣州市的 基建發展上,既發展了自己,也充實了 教學。 透過研究這類工程,我了解到很多最新的 建築技術和經驗,但這些都是次要的收 獲,最重要的是拓闊了視野。過去,我只 注重如何運用建築技術建造一座複雜而龐 大的樓房,卻往往忽略了社會與城市的 發展。增廣見識後,我不再「見木不見 林」,而是見到整個樹林,以及林與林之 間的大自然生態。
一個進取的城市,發展不會停滯。在跟進 多項工程以及整合跟進資料中,我早已超 逾單一的工程或技術,開始關注整個城 市,以及這些城市的社會發展與民生。我 為自己訂立目標,要腳踏實地走遍大街小 巷,見證城市發展,並用不同方式將這一 複雜無比、浩瀚宏偉的過程記錄下來,使 同輩的智慧、成就和得失能夠流傳下去, 成為我們的一部分,成為城市成長的一 部分。 對年青學生來說,了解這一發展過程可以 擴 展 視野,增進對社會的認識,以及體會 建築發展背後的深層意義。近十年來的這 種追求是我的專業發展與教學的橋樑,成 效亦頗為顯著。希望憑藉自己積累的材料 打開學生的心扉,引領他們體會其間的 精妙。
