From the Editor

New look, new initiatives Every new academic year brings with it new faces, new initiatives and new campus developments. The sense of excitement and regeneration that abounds this year is keener than ever. Perhaps befitting an edition that informs you of so many of the latest developments to the campus and its programmes, CityU Today has itself undergone a stylish transformation. The establishment of the School of Energy and Environment, the first in Hong Kong and one of the few in the region, heralds a dynamic new era in teaching and research that cross-examines two of the most pressing issues of our time. Also the talk of the University for all the right reasons is the revamped Library, which defines space and creates ambience intelligently by combining contemporary and traditional elements. Whether CityU Today is an old friend or a new acquaintance, share with us the joy and pride in all that is new at CityU.

Mr Reliable passes the test ቌ੡Ͼ ͱ́ಡ໰΋ࣟ By Craig Francis

ʼi௏ɾቀ

CityU has set up a Centre for Prognostics and System Health Management (PHMC) with headquarters in Hong Kong and a laboratory in Shenzhen. This new centre, established in collaboration with the CALCE PHM programme at University of Maryland, came about in response to the growing interest in PHM implementation and reliability testing on the part of a large number of companies in China in avionics, aerospace, computing, telecommunications, LED lighting and the power and automotive industries. The ever-reliable Professor Michael Pecht, Director of PHMC, took some time out to explain the intricacies of prognostics, reliability testing, some mathematics and just how the space shuttle keeps on lifting off.

The title of the centre conjures images of operating tables and surgery theatres. But there’s a little bit more to it than that, I believe? We are actually looking at the health, or reliability, of a machine or system. Our general area is reliability but we have a particular focus and that is called prognostics. With prognostics, what we are trying to achieve is the prediction of failures before they actually happen. If you can predict a failure before it happens, you can arrange maintenance, you can prevent accidents and costly malfunctions and save a lot of time and money. Prognostics also has a role in design, with results helping answer the question: “Is there a better way to make this product?”

What are the immediate aims and longer term aspirations of PHMC? Asia is such a manufacturing hub that there is undoubtedly enormous potential in this field. We see this as an area that has been missing in Asian information systems and something that can really help to revitalise the regional economy. Asian producers outside Japan have traditionally not had a solid understanding

goods – not everyone drives a car or uses a computer

So how do you test such a wide range of products? You just turn it on and let it run a couple of years until it breaks down? Well, no. No one has time for that! You’re right in that our tests have to cover the life spans of a multitude of very different items, some highly complex, others more simple, some mechanical, some electrical. Let’s say, for example, we are testing two fans, one costing 40 dollars and one costing 400 dollars. Both may pass a simple pass-fail test but how do you detect which is going to last perhaps six months, or maybe a few years? When we look at measurements for fans, we are developing qualification tests, where we are monitoring acoustic noise, vibrations, the speed of the fan and the current. Applying mathematical models, we work out what is a healthy system and what is an unhealthy system.

behaviours. The military has been very quick to accept this principle and test accordingly.

At PHMC, what is the division between education, research and contract work? It is predominantly research at the moment but we have been offering a lot of training to companies and industry groups. We’ve been spending a lot of time getting potential customers and government agencies, both here and on the mainland, educated about exactly what PHMC is all about. As well as that we’ve been giving talks and short courses at universities and other companies. Hopefully next year we’ll be able teach some graduate courses here at CityU in prognostics, reliability and quality.

Gown to Town

Cheongsams, China and chartered accounting Ρነɺࠞ ι˲ɾ਀ By Jo Kam

ʼi‫ܑټ‬ᑈ

“We need to cherish every opportunity to better equip ourselves, as you never know when your knowledge or skills are required,” said Ms Venus Tang Lai-wah, Group Financial Controller and Company Secretary of Excel Technology International Holdings. Ms Tang started her career in information technology but later switched to accounting. Studying part-time after work, she graduated from CityU’s first accounting degree programme and became a fellow member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and a Certified Public Accountant of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants. After working in public-listed companies, including Henderson Land Development Company and Shui On Group, she took up the role of Group Financial Controller in Star Telecom and South China Media Group. She is one of the few women to have served as a financial controller in the telecommunication, media and technology industries. At Excel Technology, a Hong Kong public-listed company, Ms Tang now applies her computing and accounting expertise to selecting appropriate accounting systems for the company. “Our company mainly provides corporate software solutions and information technology planning and consulting services for the banking and financial sector. Since our business covers 10 geographical regions, I need, in my capacity as the Group Financial Controller and Company Secretary, to ensure our group is in a sound financial position and complies with the regulations set for public-listed companies,” she said. She takes the initiative to work with colleagues in the computer department to improve the company’s accounting system when there’s none on the market that can fulfill the company’s requirements. Her heavy workload has not subdued her enthusiasm for study. Instead it has made her realise the importance of continuous learning. After graduating from CityU’s first Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) programme in 1999, she recently enrolled in CityU’s first Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programme to further enhance her management skills. “CityU’s College of Business has many distinguished professors who are very willing to advise us of the proper ways to study and conduct research. I’m glad I can study amidst a group of experienced and outstanding

From the Heart

Helping students develop appropriate attitude the most important task By Dr Mei-yung Leung, Assistant Professor, Department of Building and Construction ĘźiડޝࢀŕŻ&#x;ÉĄ â€ŤŰşâ€Źá‹žÓĄĐĽŕŹ‰ઠ઒

Teaching approaches influence the learning process and determine the learning outcome or what kind of students we bring up. In my class, I adopt interactive teaching techniques, combined with self-directed learning activities. I serve as a knowledge source and, at the same time, a facilitator in the learning process.
