In this issue we take a fascinating look at ground-breaking research that a team of philosophers at CityU has undertaken. Their work on classical Chinese and Korean thought, particularly in the area of Confucian studies, is attracting attention from all over the world in terms of funding and collaboration with some of the most senior philosophers in South Korea and the US. Staying with the humanities, we also look at pioneering work in translation studies and linguistics, and then we will check out some intriguing research into the carbon footprint and robotic arms. And we will find out how alumnus Vivek Mahbubani came to be named a HK Spirit Ambassador for 2013. Agreement with Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings Limited forms strategic alliance 城大與廣州醫藥集團簽訂合作協議建立戰略夥伴關係 CityU and Guangzhou Pharmaceutical Holdings Limited signed a framework agreement and announced the formation of a strategic alliance on 20 December. The aim of the alliance is to pursue collaboration in areas including business, economic and financial policy research; new drugs and diagnostic and therapeutic technologies development; and the training of healthcare management professionals. 城大12月20日與廣州醫藥集團有限公司宣佈結為戰略合作夥伴，雙方並簽訂框架 協議，在商業、經濟與金融政策研究、新藥及診療技術研發，以及醫療保健管理人才培訓等領域開展全面合作。

New Senate Room opens 全新教務會會議廳啟用 Members of the Senate attended a ceremony in November to celebrate the opening of the new Senate Room which is located at the top floor of Academic 3. Professor Way Kuo, University President, officiated at the ceremony, welcoming members of the Senate, the body responsible for all academic matters, to the new facilities. At the Senate meeting, it was unanimously decided to establish the Department of Biomedical Sciences. News & Notable CityU dedicates lecture theatre to war heroes 城大舉行命名典禮紀念抗戰英雄 The main lecture theatre in Academic 3 was named “Wong Cheung Lo Hui Yuet Hall” in October after the late Mr Wong Cheung and Mrs Wong Lo Hui-yuet in commemoration of their patriotism and humanitarianism. The naming ceremony also acknowledged the generous support of their youngest son Mr Wong Chun-hong to CityU. During World War II, Mr and Mrs Wong Cheung helped rescue some 700 patriotic intellectuals, including He Xiangning, Mao Dun and Zou Taofen, and some 80 British and US prisoners of war. 為紀念已故抗日戰爭英雄黃翔先生及黃羅許月女士的愛國和人道精神，並感謝黃氏伉儷的幼子 黃俊康先生對城大的慷概捐助，城大於10月把學術樓（三）主演講廳命名為「黃翔羅許月伉儷講 堂」。第二次世界大戰期間，黃氏伉儷協助拯救了不少性命，包括何香凝、茅盾、鄒韜奮等700餘 名中外文化人，以及80餘名英、美盟軍戰俘。

Security platform secures major IT accolade 城大資訊保安系統贏得大獎
Award-winning hi-tech research showcased at major regional fair 城大高新技術成果享譽高交會 Five research projects developed by CityU faculty won Excellent Product Awards at the 15th China Hi-Tech Fair. In addition, CityU was awarded the Excellent Pavillion Award and the Excellent Organiser Award. In all, nineteen research projects from the University were exhibited. News & Notable Thanksgiving dinner in appreciation of CityU friends’ support 城大舉行感恩晚宴表謝意 The annual Thanksgiving Dinner in November acknowledged alumni, donors and friends for their longstanding support over the years. More than 160 donors, guests, Council members, alumni and students took part in the event which was organised by the Community Relations Committee (CRC) under CityU’s Council. The dinner started after Council representatives and CRC members gave a simple but solemn toast on stage. 城大於11月舉行「感恩晚宴」，向多年來支持城大發展的校友、捐助 人及各界人士表達謝意。晚宴由城大校董會轄下的社區關係委員會籌 辦，出席者有捐助人、特邀嘉賓、校董會成員、校友、學生等共計160 餘人。校董會代表及社區關係委員會成員上台主持簡單而隆重的祝酒儀 式，為晚宴拉開序幕。

Lecture discusses global economy 諾貝爾經濟學獎得主探討全球經濟前景 One of the world’s foremost thinkers on financial and economic issues presented at a talk at CityU a range of possible scenarios that had the potential to characterise the development of the global economy over the next few years. Professor Myron S. Scholes, the 1997 Nobel Laureate in Economic Sciences and the Frank E. Buck Professor of Finance, Emeritus, at Stanford University, was speaking under the auspices of the City University Distinguished Lectures on 13 November. The title of his lecture was “Global Economy: Post the Global Financial Crisis”. 1997年諾貝爾經濟學獎得主邁倫‧斯科爾斯教授為城大主持11月13日的「城大傑出講座」，探討 全球經濟的發展前景。斯科爾斯教授是美國史丹福大學Frank E. Literary donation enhances Library resources 圖書館獲贈珍貴文獻 Literary material from the archives of a highly respected literary magazine from the mainland has been donated to the Run Run Shaw Library of CityU. Manuscripts, galley copies, illustrations, letters from readers, audiovisual materials, and literary magazines published in the 1980s by higher education institutions in mainland China were donated by the Today Literary Magazine and its chief editor Professor Bei Dao. 城大邵逸夫圖書館獲《今天文學雜誌》及其主編北島教授捐贈《今天文 學雜誌檔案》文獻，包括該雜誌自創辦以來的手稿、初期文稿、插圖、 讀者書信、錄音帶和錄影帶等資料，以及1980年代中國內地某些大專院 校自辦出版的文學刊物等。《今天文學雜誌》是中國內地的文學雜誌，一 直備受尊崇。

If students can have the opportunity to use the platform to develop their language skills, we may expect to have more time teaching translation in translation classes, Professor Zhu said. There are all kinds of language teaching websites online, but few have an interest in translation, let alone the teaching of translation. The platform constructed by Professor Zhu, Dr Mu and their team exemplifies a path-breaking approach to the teaching and (self-) learning of translation by its click-to-connect function that can bring a systematically annotated set of teaching materials to learners’ fingertips, either in or out of class. As a trendsetter, it is suitable for teaching and self-learning of translation and bilingual writing in Chinese and English, no matter in Hong Kong, mainland China or overseas.

Multifunctional 多功能機械臂 Traditional remote-controlled mechanical tools can only receive and carry out commands from an operator. However, the supermedia mobile robotic arm, a breakthrough innovation developed by research conducted at CityU, has broken the existing limitations. Enabled by advanced network and communication technologies, supermedia information such as visual, tactile, haptic, temperature, auditory and action commands, can be fed back to operators and sent to the robot. As a result, intelligent, safe and reliable operations could be carried out. This allows the mobile robotic arm to work in different environments remotely and perform complicated tasks with flexibility.

Viva Vivek! – laughing at adversity

Beating cancer, raising laughs, getting a first in Creative Media and turning prejudice to his favour have helped a highly talented CityU alumnus earn himself a very special award from his hometown of Hong Kong. When Vivek Mahbubani takes to the stage to perform his comedy act, the fact that he has just been named a Hong Kong Spirit Ambassador is unlikely to raise too many laughs. However, winning this title highlights the incredible versatility of this CityU alumnus. Vivek has had to overcome a great deal in his life, making him a perfect candidate for the ambassadorship, a scheme dreamt up by a group of individuals who share a strong sense of commitment to the future of Hong Kong and to bringing the best out of Hong Kong and its people, and to ensure that our Hong Kong Spirit prevails. From the outset, Vivek has been marked out as “different”. Hong Kong born-and-bred, his family comes from India, and in a city as Chinese as Hong Kong, the colour of his skin has always been a potential catalyst for prejudice. In fact, when he was studying Creative Media at CityU, his classmates asked him to play the role of a “savage Indian”, an act of stereotyping that is potentially very offensive. But, rather than feeling picked upon, and as a way of overcoming such stereotypes, Vivek responded favourably. After all, he says, it meant he had a performance opportunity! “If you view an episode like this from a different perspective, you can easily discover a completely different mood,” he says. His unique optimistic vision originates from his belief that you have to understand and accept yourself instead of waiting passively for someone else to pigeon-hole you.

Nevertheless, no fight against cancer is a picnic, and he had to make a lot of sacrifices. He shelved many plans, including drumming practice, which he loved. “Every treatment cycle lasted 20 days,” he recalls. “The first four days after the injections were ok, but on the fifth day I felt my whole body collapsing, and I got weaker by the day, until I hit rock bottom and could only lie in bed. Architecture is one of the oldest vocations. It does not rely simply on “academic philosophy”. Rather, it focuses on the natural and built environment. I have always tried to integrate teaching and design practice in my teaching based on my long practical experiences in mainland China, Hong Kong and the US so that the architectural design class becomes a journey of different learning experiences while students can make a contribution to society at the same time. CityU began its higher diploma course in architectural studies in 1988. The government started to finance a top-up degree in architectural studies at CityU in 2012 following our successful joint-programme with Queensland University of Technology, Australia, and our self-financing bachelor programme. Over the last twenty-some years, more than 2,000 students graduated from our programmes, they are now working as architects, engineers, technologists and project managers active in the building industry. In 2009–10, as requested by the Professional Green Building Council, we designed an eco-village on the site of a former rubbish dump in Tseng Kwan O. My students and I sought input from professionals and members of district and government departments during the preparatory stages. Based on this input, students explored possible functions and techniques, and their work has provided a number of interesting ideas. In the same way, students were involved in the Phase II design of a resort in Dunhuang, Gansu province, which is part of the “heritage tourism” project pioneered by a Hong Kong entrepreneur and social activist. One of his projects was the Dunhuang Resort, a brave development started in

學生心聲
小空間 大發現 我在科學及工程學院修讀建築學理學士 （榮譽）學位，2013–14學年的上學期 內必須完成「設計室作業」，這項設計是 我的功課之一。 我的導師是建築科技學部的助理教授達明翰博 士，他把14個攻讀該學位的三年級學生聚集起 來，一同探索營造空間、分析空間的新方式。 我們的作品安裝在圖書館的一個自習區，那裏 可以望見校內的中國式園林。 我們的任務是設計出富有紀念意義的建築物。 按照課程大綱的要求，「構思過程必須超越結 構的功能及空間的利用，以求喚起崇高莊嚴 的美感。」課程大綱還說，「崇高莊嚴的美感 可……強烈激發……設計之意念產生」。
我們的做法是：在心中想像「我們懷念一個至親至愛的人而引起」的種 種情感，「並設想為之舉行撒骨灰儀式的幾處彼此相聯的空間」。我們 着手選出三個視覺圖像，用以代表如此想像而得的情感與空間，然後 將三個視覺圖像分別變為三件實在的立體模型，並營造銜接的空間將 三者聯為一體。 我們盡力結合抽象的空間觀念與具體自然的空間觀念，並且將空間設 想為建築構件。接着，我們把這些構件擴充為三個較大的局部模型， 以助理解按比例進一步放大時必須如何充實其細部。這一過程促使我 們深入體會尺寸縮放與細部詳略的關係。在最後階段，老師要求我們 想像自己進入這件設計作品而穿行其中，親身體驗多處空間連成一體 的效果。最後，還須對模型作修改潤飾，使各部銜接呼應，方位適 宜。我們將最終的模型製成一座獨立結構的建築物。 這項設計令大家都很興奮。這樣的設計方式十分特別；按照這個理 念，我們可以構想出富有新意的設計系統和設計手法。例如，在這項 設計中，我運用了並聯分支的平衡，我的同學周家樂和李璟怡則分別 運用了投影法和撓曲線法。 我們明白了建築師如何為自己心中的概念賦予形體，使之轉化為一座 建築物，感到樂在其中。展出作品時，我們力求將之以最好的位置與 角度面對窗口，希望路過的同學能駐足觀看。動手安裝這件模型時， 見到有人拍攝的那一刻，我們就意識到展出將會成功。
