Reaching for the Summit

From the Editor

Sustainability means more than recycling plastic bottles and used paper. If we are to achieve a sustainable future, we have to review every aspect of our lives, and rethink our fundamental values. In this issue of CityU Today we are using one of the signature events for our 30th anniversary celebrations, the Sustainability Summit at the end of October 2014, to explore what sustainability means throughout campus and across the disciplines. We hope you find the stories inspirational and thought-provoking!

Reaching for the Summit

By: Michael Gibb

In October 2014 a special summit brought together highly distinguished academic, policy and business leaders from CityU and further afield to consider the interdisciplinary, and increasingly urgent, field of sustainability.

In this issue of CityU Today we will take a look at how the principles of sustainability are becoming embedded in the teaching, research and operational culture on campus. The summit itself has proved to be a huge boost to raising awareness. “The summit has given us all a chance to work

Professor Lam and his team have found a way to effect the complete degradation of polystyrene, one of the major components of municipal plastic wastes. The research team will expand the scale of the degradation into a pilot-scale operation that can take care of 0.1 to 0.5 tonnes of plastic waste in one go. If all goes well, a full industrial-scale treatment plant for the complete degradation of plastic waste can be realised in 10 to 15 years.

One potential concern is that nanoparticle coatings could damage human health should they come off and be inhaled or absorbed. In response, the team has developed a set of platforms and standard protocols for testing stability, nanoparticle performance and the overall safety of nano-coating fabrics. The project, which started September 2013, has attracted funding in collaboration with Lora & Festa Limited from the Innovation and Technology Support Programme of the Innovation and Technology Commission, which is under the Hong Kong government. “A preliminary study of the interaction of the nano-coatings with the nano-particles shows no harmful effects on cells,” Dr Daoud said. The new findings can facilitate more effective and safer technology transfer of the nanocoating fabrics to the market, and can help improve the traditional textile industry.

So my teaching goes beyond the classroom to let them meet experts in the field, conduct research on impending issues and, more importantly, give them the opportunity to gain hands-on experience on how they can contribute to society. That was the objective of an Idea Incubator Scheme project that I led. The project, which was completed last year, assesses the carbon footprint of Shek Kip Mei residents. A team of faculty and students identified practices that helped raise residents’ awareness on what they could do to lead a low-carbon life, which is a way to “walk the sustainability talk”, i.e. putting
