Who Decides the Color of Street in Taipei? Urban Landscape Planning

World Design Capital Taipei 2016: ‘Urban Landscape Planning’ collaborates with Taiwan Power Company, conducting color ref ormation plan on 144 out of 9000+ electric boxes around Taipei City. The project also invited Taipei citizens to participate in implementing environmental aesthetics in their daily life. Based on the consensus of harmonizing the landscape, citizens were en-

couraged to propose any kinds of possibility about their color experience in Taipei. When electric boxes transform into media of aesthetics, people living in the city will also be opened up to an environment of more exquisite thinking concerning harmony and better life.

Streets Only: Bubble Gum Package Re-design

Flipping Street Image of Taipei via Design There are many street vendors in Taipei, selling magnolia or daily necessary. Most of people are willing to help and buy, but there are still many concerns behind the act of purchasing. Does a gang control the vendors? How is the quality of commodity? Can the act of compassion truly help to improve vendors’ living condition? Taiwanese designer collaborates with local vendors’ group to

design and sell exclusive packaged bubble gum only on the street. It aims at encouraging more people to develop new products for street selling, in order to flip the passive situation of street vendors. Direct purchasing will benefit street vendors with more income, and build a new form of interpersonal relationship.

Taipei Corner Market : Love and Caring for Under-privileged Minority

Space Reformation of Distribution Area Social welfare institutions collect clothes for under-privileged minority as the seasons change. However, the supplies are often contained in black plastic bags, which is inconvenient for people to find clothes that suit their needs. ‘Meet Taipei: Design’ plans to create a market involving fashion design, interior design and

food design. Designers will build a market space with the homeless and open clothes shop on the street. The under-privileged can enjoy their leisure time picking up clothes and accessories comfortably, having a cup of handmade coffee, and asking designers for advices about clothing coordination.

The project expects to care under-privileged minority, to improve social relationship, to respect human dignity, and to fill the city with warmness.

Streets Only: Magnolia Fragrance Re-design

Flipping street image of Taipei via design What can we really do to help magnolia venders instead of simply rolling down the window and buying some in coins? Magnolia is a typical fragrant flower in Taiwan. In the past, it is used as a piece of accessories for female and a kind of offerings in temples. Nowadays, it is usually placed as interior fragrance. However, fresh magnolia doesn’t last long and its production is easily effected by weather. Vendors often face the situation that they have no flowers

for selling. The project collaborates with domestic fragrance industry, developing magnolia fragrant disc, which is durable, likeable and can be produced stably. Creativity can be used to reform the field where we are familiar with but too timid to get close to. Adapting design to the society, we may bring benefit to more street vendors.

Forest Bathing In Taipei Green Experience in the City

About Designer

Vincent Wittenberg & Bennie Meek Vincent Wittenberg is a socially engaged public space designer and researcher. In his unsolicited work, he reacts to locations, situations and plans, both physically and conceptually. Vincent works with an open and critical approach and act based on research. Bennie Meek, social designer that explores contemporary ways in which people can relate to nature. In 2012, Bennie received his master's degree at the department Social Design with the project A New Application For Urban Green. He is specialized in developing concepts conducting empirical research and combining critical analysis with intuitive design methods. Vincent Wittenberg and Bennie Meek have founded VERS: Eindhoven’s first neighbourhood based ‘social design’ collective.

Co-existence of nature and city, is the precondition of a sustainable environment.

Since they arrived in July, Dutch designers Vincent Wittenberg and Bennie Meek have walked and discovered the streets of Taipei. Through their observation, the most impressive thing about the city is the relationship between people, city and nature. “People’s attitude towards nature here is very different from Netherlands,” said the designers, “In our country, trees that don’t grow straight would be removed. But in Taipei, people even put supports around the trees to let them stretch freely. ” The concept of “Forest Bathing” was first introduced by the Orient, it also demonstrates the benefits the nature could bring to health and wellbeing. With the theme “ Taipei Forest Bathing”, the team collects green stories of residents in the city, taking them outdoors through a path of “Forest Bathing”, and draws attention from bustling citizens by mob shows, highlighting the lively plants and trees that live along with the city. The team expects the citizens to re-experience the urban nature, and rebuild the imagination of urban parks.

How Enviornment Constructs Our Bodies

About Designer

Charlie Evans Charlie Evans is a designer and educator. His research is currently focused on gender and performance and where they intersect at a socio-economic-political level. He employs a materially driven practice; producing objects, architecture and performance to drive investigation and knowledge production. Whilst traditional pieces of design do emerge through this practice, his outcomes are best described as interactions / events / theories / speculations / critique. Charlie is a Technical Tutor in the Design department at Goldsmiths. He is the director of The Yes Bureau, a small design and research studio based in South London. His current research is examining professional wrestling as a cultural, ethical and political practice.

Besides the nature of our bodies, we are also shaped by the society we live in.

“Our bodies are small architectures, a constructed and designed space within which we live. ” British designer Charlie Evans introduced such concept as “Body Buildings”. After his arrival, Charlie had been investigating how the citizens of Taipei understand, imagine and apply their bodies across their daily routines. His work includes participating in firefighter training sessions, trials for professional wrestling practises, and morning workout at 228 memorial park, even by setting up a big, red, Taiwanese-styled vendor cart “最大膝關節” at GongGuan night market to interact with the crowds. Through his investigations, Charlie observed how our bodies are stimulated and shaped by the environment, society and other external factors. In his Body builder workshop, Charlie shared his design method, which begins from sketches that motivate observations and selections. From observing to practising, citizens were invited to find out the key effects the surroundings have on our bodies.

Discover the potential of waste materials through design.

A tactile designer with a focus on material development, sustainable fashion and textiles, Victoria Ledig makes waste materials into fabulous creations. Through fieldworks, Victoria found that the recycling system of domestic wastes in Taipei is rather complete compared with the one of industrial wastes, it was at this point she started to collect and try to make use of those materials. At her workshop “Waste-craft” of the residential project, Victoria invited professional designers and creators to explore the potentials of waste materials. By providing a new perception of industrial wastes, Victoria tried to engage factories and creators in a long-term collaborations to enhance the whole production process.

Draw your own emotional map of Taipei from a personal view.

City maps, on paper or digital, focus on the physical shape of the city and its landmarks. But the lived experience of the city is no less real: as we go about our daily life, our feelings and emotions are also linked to places, but no map shows them. What shape do they have? Do we share feelings about certain urban places in the same way we can share a street bench or a bus? And what place holds a unique personal meaning for each one of us? At “YOUR CITY YOUR LIFE: A Subjective Mapping of Taipei” workshop, Spanish designer Viviana Narotzky invited participants to draw a map of the city with their own memories. What matters is not the appearance of the city, but the spirit it presents. Make Taipei more than what it is, make it yours.

A depiction of human-technology interaction through design for animals.

Do animals have the right to pursue sexual sensation and sexual diversity like human beings do? Taiwanese designer Kuang-Yi, Ku posed such question based on the relationship and interaction between animals and human, and further more, applying the research method of Design Fiction to construct a virtual land of future with Dolphin Eroticarium. Nothing like a traditional park which locks up animals, this playground is built open and movable in their habitats. Playground facilities are sex-toy-like constructions that stimulate their activities whilst the dolphins enters freely. It is an experiment to discover the influence of science and technology on future society through art work, so as to rethink the interrelationship between human beings, technology and the environment.

A design method of regarding various sensory perceptions as inspirations.

What would you choose as an element of Taipei? With (re)view,BCXSY introduced their approach to design. Through research, reflection and critical analyzing of the subject BCXSY work on, but also of other related elements, such as the specific people they work with, their working- and living environment and the relations between those and the techniques and materials used. In the lecture, BCXSY went deeper behind the scenes of several past projects and shared the background and stories which caused them to create the final designs. During the workshop people focus on the subject of souvenirs, starting with a chosen object/image from each participant. With the guidance, the participants developed a concept for a souvenir, reflecting their personal view and relation with Taipei, providing an alternative to the common, almost universal key-chain, pencil or fridge-magnet.
