A booming, but confusing wedding season

A

fter COVID-19 forced the postponement of many weddings in 2020 and early 2021, this summer marked a season of return.

According to a study published in The Knot and reported by The Atlantic, nearly half of the couples who scheduled weddings for 2020 postponed the celebration until this year or later. That also means many couples who got engaged in the last year and a half are competing to have their nuptials in the same time frame as those who already postponed. As one photographer told The Atlantic in a June article, “It’s two years of weddings in one year.” This means vendors and venues are getting booked further in advance than in a typical year, among other obstacles, surely leaving many families confused and stressed. Even more challenging now is contending with the Delta variant and increased COVID-19 cases throughout Ohio and beyond. As I write this in mid-August, it’s unclear whether postponing or canceling major events like weddings is going to be the trend this fall, or if implementing more Periodical Supplement to Cleveland Jewish News, August 27, 2021

restrictions – like strict face mask and vaccination requirements – will be able to save the celebrations. That said, when we plan ahead for an issue of Jstyle Weddings, we always aim to both focus on trends in season, but also timeless tips for planning a beautiful and loving ceremony and party. This issue is no different – we offer both expert advice for couples looking ahead to weddings as soon as this fall, and for those planning however far ahead is needed to savor their big day. It’s my hope that any couple, family or wedding guest can find something within these pages that relieves a little stress or brings about some excitement. For example, in our wedding planning feature, a planner and garment alterations professional provide tips for dealing with the unexpected the day of the wedding. In our desserts feature, cake designers explain the elegant wedding cake styles

On the cover Victoria Goldfarb and Joseph Rosen share a moment on their wedding day at Cleveland Botanical Garden on July 10, 2021. Their wedding was officiated by Cantor Kathryn Wolfe Sebo. popular today, as well as why it’s never a bad idea to have several dessert options. Another story is about hiring and working with a wedding photographer, where professionals give advice for identifying a photographer who can capture the scenes you’ll most want to remember. As always, this issue also includes spotlights on three weddings that took place locally this year. While all the couples featured had to make some alterations or sacrifices to their imagined perfect day to accommodate challenges brought on by the pandemic, each expressed joy and excitement about how the day turned out, as well as their future together. If you enjoy stories of love (who doesn’t?) or are looking for insight into what a 2021 wedding in Northeast Ohio can look like, I encourage you to check them out. Whether you are planning a wedding for this fall or 2023, a small backyard ceremony or a bash of epic proportions, I hope you are able to do so safely and that this issue of Jstyle Weddings provides some ideas for how to make it happen.

H

ow did you meet? We have been mutual family friends for years, but we were seated next to each other at the Kahan family’s seder table five years ago. Sparks flew, a few months later we went on our first date and the rest is history. Do you have any interesting stories to share about getting to know one another? We had fun and got to know each other a little more each day through travel, spending time together at home, eating and getting to know each other’s family and friends. Our first Halloween together we bought costumes and every snack in the grocery store around the corner. We learned how to make sushi and pasta together, Joey came to love red wine, and on one of our dates early in the relationship, we ordered chicken wings in our sweatpants because Tori figured that if Joey was truly going to be a long-term partner, he would have to accept and appreciate this side of her early on, and luckily he more than did. How long did you know each other before you got married? We dated for almost 5 years before we got married. When did you know you wanted to marry your partner? Victoria: I wouldn’t say there was a particular moment when I knew I wanted to marry Joey, as that feeling grew more and more over the course of the time we’ve been together, but I knew I wanted to commit to dating him when he visited me at the elementary school where I still currently teach. Only a few months into getting to know one another, he came and listened to my curriculum night presentation and gave kind, genuine feedback. Then when we were leaving school, one of my students came up to hug me in the parking lot. When we got in the car, (Joey) seemed truly touched and expressed how much he valued and respected that I teach and thought that I was a wonderful person. That meant so much to me and made me really take him seriously and move forward with him. Joseph: It was pretty early on in the relationship. I don’t know that there was an exact moment, but the more time we spent and experiences we had together, the more sure I was. I knew when we became official and she cooked me a special dinner that I could see it forever.

It was very special to both of us that we got married in the gold wedding bands of each of our grandmothers who are no longer with us before switching to our new wedding bands. We were honored to enmesh both of our pasts with our future together in this way. - Victoria and Joseph Was there any spot-on advice you received prior to the big day, either in terms of the wedding or lasting relationship? We received lots of thoughtful advice leading up to the wedding. We were advised to make sure we take a step back during the wedding to really take it all in and enjoy the moment, and that suggestion truly helped us both be present and make the most of each moment of the day. We’ve also been told not to go to bed upset with one another.

What was the best part of wedding planning? We definitely enjoyed the food and cake tastings together, but we loved planning the details with our closest family (especially the mother of the bride). It was a special time and our vendors were incredible.

What were your favorite moments of the day? We were so grateful to be able to celebrate our marriage safely with our closest family and friends, the weather was absolutely beautiful and we truly enjoyed every minute of the day. The ceremony and ketubah signing were some of our favorite parts of the day because they both felt so intimate and special. Looking at each other, at our parents and siblings under the chuppah with us, out to the group of people who came to support us, and then up at the blue sky that had been sandwiched between two weeks of rain felt surreal, yet so peaceful and sacred. My (Victoria’s) dad telling me he was proud of me moments before he walked me down the aisle was a memory I’ll always cherish. We felt so loved and had a truly magical day we will never forget.

How did the pandemic affect your wedding plan and wedding day? We were originally planning to get married on July 11, 2020, but postponed our wedding celebrations to this summer, when we celebrated on July 10, 2021. We definitely adjusted our mindset and expectations, but in the year that we postponed we purchased our first home and our beautiful puppy, Willow, together. We were very grateful that we could safely have our event when we did this summer.

Were there any conflicts between the two of you or your families in the planning process? Did either of you have to make any sacrifices? We could not be luckier to have families that mesh and have now blended together so well. Part of what bonded us were our family values, and that translated into a very smooth and fun planning process. Especially after the pandemic, we were all so grateful to even have our wedding that Joey and I truly only felt love and support with the decisions that we made with our families during the planning process.

Cue the celebration Industry pros talk minimizing stress on the wedding day By Alex Krutchik

T

he months of preparation are done. The couple has picked out their outfits, the wedding band has been chosen and the cake has been baked. Now, the focus shifts to the day of the actual wedding and the small things that may arise. Fortunately, a local wedding planner and a garment and alterations expert have tips for what marrying couples and those close to them may – sometimes unexpectedly – need to consider when the action begins.

WEDDING PLANNER’S PERSPECTIVE Of course with the number of moving parts during the ceremony and reception, the wedding day has the potential to be stressful, no matter the amount of preparation. This is where Kim 14

Jstyle Weddings 2021

Singerman, owner of Noteworthy Events in Solon and Cincinnati, steps in. Her job starts as soon as the wedding-planning process begins, sometimes more than a year before the wedding. That’s when she starts gathering information and putting things together in a very detailed timeline. The timeline is also a collaboration, useful when she first starts working with the wedding party, hiring vendors and gathering information. “I refer to it as my Bible,” Singerman says. “Because it’s just the most important thing I do. And if it’s done with every bit of detail that could possibly be needed, that’s all I need.” The months of planning is meant to make the day of the wedding as smooth as possible for everyone involved. says her role is to manage the couple’s day. This includes managing the vendors, guests and the timing of the day. Whenever any issue arises with a vendor, she acts as the go-to person for the family, so the vendor is not going up to the client and asking them questions that they shouldn’t be bothered with on the special day. “I once had a client tell me afterwards in a thank you note that I was her CEO,” Singerman says. “And I never thought about it like that, but I’ve used it ever since.” Because of the work Singerman and other planners put in, the hope is there is no action needed on behalf of the clients once the day of the wedding comes. Singerman says her 18 years of experience with planning weddings has prepared her for pretty much anything, while most couples are doing this for the first time. This is how she is able to make the event as seamless and enjoyable as possible. Singerman says the most important thing is that the family enjoys the day. If there’s an issue that she may not see, the family should let her know so she can deal with it. Her job, as she puts it, is to alleviate tension or stress. Singerman shares a story where at one wedding she was running, during the ceremony, somebody bumped into the wedding cake. It caused the cake to 16

collapse and smear itself all over the table, seemingly ruining it. Before anyone from the ceremony could find out, she got the cake baker, gave her a glass of white wine to calm her nerves, and fixed the cake. To this day, Singerman says, nobody from the family found out.

ABOUT GARMENTS Of course, everybody wants to look great on their special day. Not only the couple, but the wedding party wants to look their best as well. Much like Singerman, Jen Rondinelli’s job begins long ahead of the wedding day. Rondinelli, in-house marketing manager for Alterations Express in Mayfield Heights, says brides typically come in for alterations three or four times in the six weeks prior to the wedding. About a week prior to the wedding, brides will pick up their gowns and men will pick up their tuxes. Rondinelli says her biggest piece of advice is to make sure the dress is steamed properly, and for the tux or suit to be pressed properly. “Before I started working for the company, I had never steamed or pressed any of my clothing,” Rondinelli says. “I know it sounds crazy, but it’s actually pretty common, especially with younger people being married. ... I know it doesn’t seem like

it makes that much of a difference, but it really does.” Rondinelli says this is especially true if you’re having a summer wedding while it’s hot outside. In these conditions, garments tend to wrinkle more. As for the day of the wedding, Rondinelli said bustles are essential for bridal gowns, as they hold up the train of a dress. So, if a wedding dress is a little bit long in the back, bustles allow for the buttoning up of the ends of the dress so it’s easier to get around at the reception. However, bustles sometimes break on the wedding day. So, Rondinelli suggests making sure to get extra bustles when clients pick up gowns from a seamstress or tailor. Similarly, Rondinelli suggests having a sewing kit on hand for any wedding attire. This will help fix any minor wardrobe malfunctions, such as bustles falling off.

FINAL THOUGHTS Rondinelli recommends all brides get their gowns preserved after their weddings. Alterations Express offers this service, in which it cleans the gown and boxes it in special paper and a special box that will preserve it for years to come. As for the wedding itself, Singerman recommends incorporating family heirlooms, like a tallit. Using a tallit of a deceased grandfather or a kiddush cup that’s been passed down through the family makes a meaningful touch for the whole family. “Weddings are very stressful,” Singerman says. “And if you have someone else to help alleviate that, or take on the stress, then you’re golden. There are things that can happen at weddings that families have no idea that it happened.” Publisher’s note: Kim Singerman is married to Paul J. Singerman, board chair of the Cleveland Jewish Publication Company. jstylemagazine.com

Weddings are slowly returning indoors, after a long hiatus as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Choose a more neutral space so you can decorate to the nines with hanging flower installations, playful tablecloths and place settings, and extravagant lighting installations. For a dress, the sparklier, the better. Beading, sequins and jewels can lend themselves to an elegant affair. Make the whole event black tie, so tuxedos and long gowns are worn by all the guests and contribute to the glamour. Planning and design by A Charming Fete. Florals by Andrew Thomas Design.

Magical Memories By Jessica Simon Throughout the pandemic, outdoor weddings were made to be gorgeous while using the stars, trees and greenery all around to enhance the atmosphere. ow did you meet? We’ve been friends since high school and stayed in touch while Madolyn lived in LA, and Michael lived in Washington, D.C., but the distance made dating impossible. Michael moved to LA last year after he started working remotely. We were both excited to reconnect – when Michael texted Madolyn to tell her he was moving to LA, she replied that “her jaw dropped.” We moved in together a couple of months after Michael arrived in LA, and the rest is history. Do you have any interesting stories to share about getting to know one another? When we first started dating, we went on a hike in the mountains outside of LA. It was a cold day, but we didn’t realize it would be snowing up on the mountain. By the time we got to the peak, it had snowed so much that we couldn’t see the trail to find our way back down. We got very lost several times on the way back, and weren’t exactly prepared or dressed for a blizzard. Michael was impressed by how calm Madolyn stayed under pressure throughout the hike, and Madolyn appreciated how concerned Michael was for her in an uncomfortable situation. Once we made it safely back to the bottom, we felt more connected than we’d ever been and had a feeling that we’d be facing many more of life’s challenges together. How long did you know each other before you got married? 20 years. When did you know you wanted to marry your partner? Michael: As soon as we started dating I knew I wanted to marry Madolyn, but there were little things along the way that validated this feeling. We had an uncanny way of agreeing with each other on even the smallest of things, and laughed so easily together that it just felt right. Madolyn: As soon as we started dating I knew I wanted to marry Michael, but there were little things along the way that validated this feeling. Seeing his love for his family and nieces, laughing while making up games in the middle of the night and dancing in the kitchen while cooking meals together solidified my feeling.

Our favorite moment of the wedding was the yichud – the 10 minutes after the ceremony we spent alone together. Our engagement and the planning of the wedding had been a whirlwind, and now that we were finally married we took a few breaths together, reflecting on the wedding and our marriage, then looked forward to the celebration. - Madolyn

What was the best part of wedding planning? Working as a team together. At different times, planning the wedding was both exciting and stressful. It gave us the opportunity to share a vision and work together to realize it. Ultimately, it was rewarding to see it all come together. We also really appreciated the support of our families – without their help and insights, we never could have pulled this off. How did the pandemic affect your wedding plan and wedding day? We’d have had more out-of-town friends and family than we were able to because of the pandemic. Were there any conflicts between the two of you or your families in the planning process? Did either of you have to make any sacrifices? We’re vegetarians and wanted to avoid serving meat at the wedding, which wasn’t ideal for all guests. jstylemagazine.com

FOOD

SWEETS

Dessert elegance By McKenna Corson After devouring plates of savory food at a wedding reception, it’s only natural for guests and the couple to develop a sweet tooth. There are many ways to celebrate with dessert, but for those yawning at the sight of tiered, plain white wedding cakes, there are new, creative takes that still provide that delectable edge. Pros from Lucy’s Sweet Surrender in Shaker Heights, Luna Bakery & Cafe in Cleveland Heights and Moreland Hills, and Unger’s Kosher Bakery and Food Shop in Cleveland Heights offer tips on the latest trends in wedding confections, from cake flavors to edible decorations, to even subbing in different treats for wedding cakes.

Lucy’s Sweet Surrender Picking your wedding cake’s flavor can be difficult. That’s why Michael Feigenbaum, the owner and pastry chef at Lucy’s Sweet Surrender, encourages couples to have many cakes of varying flavors. “I love the idea of the buffet of cakes because it gives me a chance to do some different things,” Feigenbaum says. “You can have a really nice selection of different things to eat instead of being stuck with a white buttercream cake.” A cake buffet also allows guests with special dietary needs, like those allergic to nuts or who are vegan, to enjoy the sweet spread with a cake catering to them. For couples who want dessert diversity but also envision a cake perfect for those classic photos of icing playfully smeared on their noses, Feigenbaum offers a solution: pair the cake buffet or other unique sweets with one small, traditional wedding cake for the couple to pose with. Using some photo magic with angles and depth of field, the wedding photographer can make the small cake look feast-worthy. “The photographer could take a picture of you feeding each other this traditional cake, and yet you’ve got this other dessert coming out to people,” he says. “You can have both sides: the unique, unexpected dessert and the wedding cake effect.”

SWEETS Unger’s Malka Rosenberg, owner of Unger’s, says she’s seeing more and more couples opt for simpler wedding cakes instead of multi-tiered, heavily adorned cakes. “The layers are higher and simpler, and most of the time the decoration is done with fresh flowers, not with icing,” Rosenberg says. “It’s much more of a clean look, more delicate and fancy.” Rosenberg suggests couples try a wedding cake with two or three layers that extend higher up instead of the more traditional, four- or five-layer cake that stay closer to the cake’s base. When it comes to trending flavors, Rosenberg says lemon and mousse flavors, like chocolate, vanilla and strawberry, are very popular today. Unger’s does either individual mousse cups or mousse cakes. “Lemon and mousse are more trendy than brownies or more traditional stuff,” Rosenberg says. “I think people like that more.”

Luna Bakery Annalisa Mahon and Brynn Keefe, cake designers/decorators at Luna Bakery, say they see a recent callback to “elegant simplicity” when it comes to wedding cakes. Texture is Luna Bakery’s most popular customization option, as cakes can be decorated to fit events and overall wedding vibes by using the same fresh florals from the wedding. “After 2020, people were just so happy to be finally getting married after having to postpone that they just wanted a beautiful wedding cake that tasted great,” Mahon and Keefe explain in an email interview. For desserts beyond the wedding cake, Mahon and Keefe offer the idea of using packaged custom sugar cookies as a place setting or takeaway gift. “It’s a fun way to feature a monogram, inside joke, hashtag or include a beloved pet into the wedding,” Mahon and Keefe say.

LOCATIONS

Vibrant venues By Sammi Fremont Proximity, connection, aesthetic and accommodations are all crucial considerations when choosing a location and venue for your wedding reception. Professionals from Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens in Akron, Signature of Solon and House of Blues Cleveland discuss how to choose your perfect wedding site and what makes their venues special.

When we take folks out for their initial appointment, you can usually tell if they’re going to connect with you or not. If you connect with the right person, somebody that you are confident working with, you know that everything’s going to fall into place. ... Take a look at and see what you connect to. You’re going to connect to the landscape and the flowers and the beautiful surroundings. - Bob Ulm, director of rental services, Stan Hywet Hall & Gardens

One of the things that is a true unique selling proposition for us is there aren’t very many country clubs that have a ballroom the size of Signature. We have a ballroom that can accommodate up to 500 people. And in that ballroom, there are great windows and views of the golf course and a lake. What we find is a lot of facilities that can accommodate the amount of people that we can are oftentimes hotel ballrooms with no windows, so we’ve kind of got a little bit of the best of both worlds where we’ve got the size but we also have the views that you don’t find together very often. - Dan DeCrow, general manager, Signature of Solon

It has to be a space that feels like a couple, which is why we tend to get a lot of more nontraditional couples. We can still do traditional weddings, but it really is for people that love rock ‘n’ roll, or if they met at a concert. ... It just needs to be a space that fits your budget, but fits your idea and that you’re going to have a good time planning and not be stressed because the venue itself is going to help you every step of the way – from the initial planning through the day of the event. If you’re doing your ceremony with us, we always have an attendant that’s with the bridal party to keep them on time and help them with any questions that they have. - Julie Woyma, senior director of special event sales, House of Blues Cleveland

PHOTOGRAPHY

Capturing the moment By Becky Raspe A good photo can impart vivid memories of the exact moment it was taken. But, how does one ensure their big day is remembered in the way they want? According to Lindsey Beckwith, owner and photographer at Lindsey Beckwith Photography in Cleveland; Jonathan Koslen, owner and photographer at New Image Photography in Chagrin Falls; and Stephanie Uptmor, owner and photographer at Imagine It Photography in Avon Lake and Cleveland, choosing the right photographer is the best place to start. Lindsey Beckwith Photography

LINDSEY BECKWITH PHOTOGRAPHY Since photographers are one of the only vendors that will be with couples the entire day of their wedding, Beckwith says choosing a photographer you like will ensure the best result. “You’re going to see your day through your photographer’s lens,” she says. “Memories fade, we’re going to get old, but you will always have those photos. So, you want someone you get along with, that you gel with. A person that makes sense to you – because it is through their eyes. That’s how you’ll remember your wedding.” Couples should also consider how often the photographer shoots weddings. If someone is a weekend warrior or photography is a side gig, they might not be able to deliver the volume of photos couples have come to expect, Beckwith says. “Weddings are a different type of photography and require a vast number of skills,” she says. “A wedding photographer is a portrait photographer, photojournalist and director all at once. You want someone with enough experience to shoot under any condition, emotion or weather wise. You need someone who can stay calm under all of that pressure.” When interviewing potential photographers, Beckwith says to make sure you see samples of the work – especially samples from the actual person in charge of your wedding coverage. “You want to make sure the samples they provide are actually their work,” she says. “You want to make sure the person you’re talking to is actually the person shooting your wedding. Tell them about your venue and make sure they’ve shot at that venue before.”

NEW IMAGE PHOTOGRAPHY If the “wrong” photographer is chosen who doesn’t match the needs, the couple may feel upset about it for years to come, Koslen warns. This is why couples should be sure the photographer can do what they need, especially when it comes to the intricacies present in traditional Jewish weddings. “Families will never live it down,” he says. “There have been so many issues and debacles with photographers, especially with more traditional weddings. There are so many parts. And if you have someone that doesn’t know what they’re doing, I can guarantee they don’t know the significance of the traditions. When you miss something like that, you know the family will be unhappy. There are no two ways about it – you’ll only get one part of the story.” Koslen notes couples should be confident in the fact their photographer is competent and reliable. “You need to like their work, obviously ... and try to get a lot of examples and a referral or two from their friends, the venue and their wedding coordinator,” he says. “You should also be able to ask for specific photos from weddings, from specific moments. If the photographer understands the lingo, there shouldn’t be an issue.” And many studios don’t start their wedding services at the ceremony itself, but before. Koslen says he wishes more clients went to a photographer at the beginning of their planning process for an engagement shoot. “It would be great to have them come in and meet us,” he says. “I like being able to get to know all of my couples.”

Uptmor says couples tend to know when they’ve found the right photographer when they feel “a peace of mind” on their wedding day. That’s when it’s clear the person they chose will capture every interaction. “It’s about feeling confident that you’ve hired someone who is going to capture all of those moments,” she says. “One of the things brides seem most concerned about when they talk to us is hiring a photographer that can capture all the moments of the day, every smile and look. We don’t want to miss anything. So, for our team, we have unlimited hours on ceremony days and only leave once we feel like we’ve captured everything.” When selecting a photographer, Uptmor suggests couples request to see full wedding albums to get a sense of how a photographer operates from start to finish. “This way, they can see more than just the pretty photos on a blog,” she says. “You want a clear picture of what they can do, not just their favorites on their website. What’s super big right now is photos that are edited super dark or warm, but do you want the whole gallery to look like that?” Before making their final choice, couples should make a list of what is important to them and compare it to what each potential photographer can deliver, Uptmor says. “Are unlimited hours important, or do they only need someone for six to seven hours?” she asks. “Do they need two photographers? They need to know what they want going into it, at least a little bit.” Jstyle Weddings 2021

H

ow did you meet? We went to high school together but didn’t know one another too well since we were in different grades. We reconnected at a bar, The Fairmount, in 2017, where Ryan showed Peter pictures of her recent brown recluse spider bite. While that didn’t do the trick, we eventually matched on a dating app and the rest is history. How long did you know each other before you got married? We were dating for three years before we got engaged. We were married six months after the engagement. When did you know you wanted to marry your partner? Ryan: I knew after three months of dating. Peter had just cooked me another delicious meal and we were sitting in his kitchen in his downtown apartment and it just hit me that this was the man I was going to marry. What did you plan for the proposal? Peter: The plan came together quickly when we decided to take a trip down to Miami over the holidays last year. We really wanted to get away after a year of being stuck inside. It just so happened that Ryan’s whole family (parents, sister, cousins, aunts and uncles) had a similar plan to head to Florida. I popped the question when we arrived at the hotel. I had arranged for champagne and chocolates to be sent to the room, and worked with a florist who put together a beautiful flower display. It was very romantic. The following evening we were able to celebrate at Ryan’s uncle’s house (in a COVID-19 safe way). He made a bunch of food. It was awesome! How did the pandemic affect your wedding plan and wedding day? We were very much a COVID bride and groom. Due to the pandemic, we had to keep our wedding smaller and we chose a warmer month so we could all be outside. We started planning shortly after we got engaged in January 2021, when they were just beginning to administer vaccines. We weren’t sure what the world would look like come June, but we decided to go for it anyway. We had no idea that two weeks before our wedding the state would lift mask mandates. We had the best time with our family and friends – it was great to see people again! It was one of the first events where people were able to be together again. We had the best time.

“I had a lot of fun planning the wedding with my mom, Sunny. I think the best part for both of us was getting our families involved in the planning process. We truly enjoyed incorporating many of the Jewish traditions into our special day.” - Ryan

Were there any conflicts between the two of you or your families in the planning process? Did either of you have to make any sacrifices? It was just a bit stressful at first because we began planning the wedding in the middle of a pandemic, when they were just starting to administer the COVID vaccines. We weren’t sure who was going to show at the wedding, even close family members had their concerns. In the end, our closest family and friends were able to attend and we had a blast. What was the most fun or interesting Jewish aspect of your wedding/partnership? We liked the signing of the ketubah. Cantor (Kathy) Sebo put our parents on the spot and they gave us their best advice and wishes for a happy life together. We also really loved the ceremony and all of the Jewish traditions that came with it, from getting married under the chuppah, to circling and breaking the glass. jstylemagazine.com

FLORAL

Floral allure By Amanda Koehn and Jamie Insul In the cheerful haze of attending a wedding as a guest, it can be difficult to remember any one specific aspect that defines the event’s general vibe. Rather, the memories result from all the beautiful parts coming together. Although they may not jump out to an observer, floral arrangements and the design elements they incorporate contribute more than meets the eye to the romantic and elegant themes of the day. Flowers and colorful or textured elements tend to set the look of the day – brightly colored or more natural looking, soft or striking – and with it, the general mood. For this fall, local floral designers from Pieter Bouterse Studio and Studio Floral share what kinds of flowers and arrangements are popular right now, as well as some strategies for working with florists to set the scene.

Genevieve Nisly Photography / Pieter Bouterse Studio

PIETER BOUTERSE STUDIO Lexi Norvet, the general manager at Pieter Bouterse Studio based in Warrensville Heights, says weddings today are incorporating more and more diverse elements special to the couple. Regarding current trends, Norvet explains that brides, “are less afraid to get exactly what they want. They have become a lot less attached to trends in the past year, thinking outside the box and trying to be more progressive – like working with feathers or dried goods.” This past year, people have been embracing their personal style more than ever, she says. Moreover, a good florist is able to offer creative solutions to whatever trend or idea the bride wants to follow. “A good florist is able to explain exactly what they are going to do and what it is going to look like with words,” Norvet says, in addition to “being able to offer you creative solutions ... whether you have limitations based on the venue or budget or preference. A good florist works in those perimeters.”

Jennifer Klasch, head designer and owner at Studio Floral in Cleveland, says for this season, bohemian and natural styles are a hit for weddings. “For the summer and fall I’ve been seeing a lot of the almost like boho style – very loose greens, lots of pampas grass, lots of natural colors,” she says, adding color schemes that incorporate greens, whites, ivories, taupes champagnes and browns are trending. She explains dried grasses and leaves have been a frequent request recently, which may have something to do with increased interest in appearing more natural and environmentally friendly, and thus the floral arrangements fitting in with the natural landscape and scenery. “I think everybody is trying to be more eco-friendly, and so the trends are kind of based on that,” Klasch says. “They are trying to use things that look more natural in the environment.” What should couples know before meeting with a florist to set the stage for the big day? Some vision of what you like and a potential color palette helps. “If you have a few photos or a Pinterest board started, that would be wonderful to work with before you even met with a florist, just so you have some idea of where you are going” Klasch says. jstylemagazine.com

SETTING THE SCENE

ENTERTAINMENT

Entertainment time By Alex Krutchik Putting together an unforgettable event for a couple and their family and friends can be overwhelming. When it comes to entertainment, such as bringing in a DJ, band or a late night snack, it’s important to identify vendors who can be flexible with what the family is seeking and through the night as the event progresses, music requests come in and guests get hungry again. Cleveland Music Group in Valley View, The Event Stop in Beachwood and Trikeable Treats in Lakewood all have their own unique ways of contributing to the special occasions.

When booking a DJ with technology today, there should be zero opportunity to stump a DJ. Because of the onset of iTunes, Apple Music and Spotify, every song should be accessible for a DJ, or even for a band leader to play it as a pre-recorded track. So there should be no opportunity to stump anybody in our industry that’s providing music. -Scott Jones, president and lead DJ/emcee Cleveland Music Group Spencer Photography / Cleveland Music Group

For weddings, we’re either part of a bridal shower, part of the happy hour, the dessert or we’re finding ourselves now being the late night snack before everybody leaves. Maybe instead of having a taco before they go home off the dance floor, they’re having an ice cream. So we’re super flexible, and no two events are the same. We work with the bride or the wedding planner to see what they would like to do, and we can customize around whatever our brides and their families want. -Jeff Worron, owner Trikeable Treats Genevieve Nisly Photography / Cleveland Music Group

I would always start with getting your guest count in order so that way you know what size venue you need to go with. Oftentimes, people start with the venue and then they get their RSVPs and sometimes potentially have to change or go with another option, because maybe their guest count exceeded the capacity for that venue. Also, make sure the venue fits the setup. Always consult with your event planner as well so that you can carry out your vision. -Patricia Bagley, owner The Event Stop

HORA

New Image Photography

The hora is a Jewish tradition and something we both have always looked forward to. We have loved looking back at the pictures and seeing everyone smiling and laughing during it. This was the first time a lot of our friends had been to a Jewish wedding so seeing them experience it for the first time was exciting for us. -Tara and Josh
