SETTING THE SCENE

FLORAL

Floral allure By Amanda Koehn and Jamie Insul In the cheerful haze of attending a wedding as a guest, it can be difficult to remember any one specific aspect that defines the event’s general vibe. Rather, the memories result from all the beautiful parts coming together. Although they may not jump out to an observer, floral arrangements and the design elements they incorporate contribute more than meets the eye to the romantic and elegant themes of the day. Flowers and colorful or textured elements tend to set the look of the day – brightly colored or more natural looking, soft or striking – and with it, the general mood. For this fall, local floral designers from Pieter Bouterse Studio and Studio Floral share what kinds of flowers and arrangements are popular right now, as well as some strategies for working with florists to set the scene.

PIETER BOUTERSE STUDIO Lexi Norvet, the general manager at Pieter Bouterse Studio based in Warrensville Heights, says weddings today are incorporating more and more diverse elements special to the couple. Regarding current trends, Norvet explains that brides, “are less afraid to get exactly what they want. They have become a lot less attached to trends in the past year, thinking outside the box and trying to be more progressive – like working with feathers or dried goods.” This past year, people have been embracing their personal style more than ever, she says. Moreover, a good florist is able to offer creative solutions to whatever trend or idea the bride wants to follow. “A good florist is able to explain exactly what they are going to do and what it is going to look like with words,” Norvet says, in addition to “being able to offer you creative solutions ... whether you have limitations based on the venue or budget or preference. A good florist works in those perimeters.”
