Colors of Summer
Colorful ways to enhance your summer, vacation, and everyday layouts.
by S

From the warm reds and yellows of sunshine, fruit, and flowers to the cool blues and greens of water and grass, colors enchant us during the summer months. If your scrapbook pages need a little splash of summertime happiness, explore one of these four summer-inspired color palettes: fiery red, yellow, and orange; oceaninspired aqua, green, and silver; nautical blue, white, and yellow; or tropical pink, turquoise, and orange. On the following pages, you’ll learn how to use these color palettes to enhance your scrapbook pages about the summer season, your favorite vacations, and pages that depict your everyday life.

Ocean-Inspired:
Aqua and Green with Silver
Alternate Palette One: Dove Gray, White, and Teal
Alternate Palette Two: Lime Green, Light Blue, and White
The opposite of a fiery color scheme
is the cool, soothing, ocean-inspired color palette of aqua and green. They’re strong summer colors as they represent water and grass, which surround our summer activities. Adding a touch of silver to this cool palette will make your layouts shimmer with understated elegance. Cool colors tend to have a calming effect, and although summer is filled with warm days spent in the sun, you can use this palette to bring to mind the relaxing and restful side of summer (with lots of cooling off in the water).
Brigid Gonzalez used a metallic silver cardstock background for her layout, which is reminiscent of the shimmer of sun on water. Using silver as a neutral backdrop allows the aqua and green in your layout to pop while keeping your viewer’s focus on your darling photos.

Beyond Landmarks by Mou Saha. Supplies: Cardstock: Core’dinations; Rubons: American Crafts; Stickers: 7gypsies; Stamps: 7gypsies, Hampton Art, Martha Stewart Crafts, and Studio Calico; Ink: Ranger Industries; Pen: Faber-Castell; Adhesive: 3M; Other: Book paper and brochure.
Capture the flavor of the city you visit by photographing the sights you see as you leave your hotel each morning, in addition to the attractions you’re there to see. Like Mou Saha did, you can photograph the souvenir shop where you bought your postcards and interesting signs or advertisements on the public transportation you take. Also consider other daily sights, like the street café where you drink your coffee, the mailbox you pass on the street, and more.
BudGet TIP
If you spent all your fun money on your vacation and you’re looking for an inexpensive way to scrapbook your trip, consider creating layouts like this one. Using your photo-editing software (or even Microsoft Word), arrange a selection of your photos in an attractive collage. Then download free fonts to create your title and journaling. Tah-dah! You’ll have a quick and beautiful layout without spending a lot of money. Bay View 08 by Becky Pogatchnik. A Day at the Pier by Stacy Cohen. Supplies: Cardstock: Bazzill Basics Paper; Patterned paper, chipboard, and die cuts: GCD Studios; Stickers: American Crafts; Rhinestones: Darice; Baker’s twine: Jillibean Soup; Glitter glue: Ranger Industries; Glitter: Doodlebug Design; Ink: Clearsnap; Font: American Typewriter Bold; Adhesive: Beacon Adhesives, EK Success, and Tombow; Other: Brads.
Use a scenic photo as a title path. Add energy to your page by placing your title along the contour of something in your scenic photo. Stacy Cohen’s title wraps around the Ferris wheel in her photo, bring energy and movement to her layout.
Don’t be afraid to move around an object, by walking or even driving, to capture the best scenic shot. It sounds like a lot of extra effort, but as Stacy shows us (she walked around the Santa Monica Pier until she found just the right spot to photograph the Ferris wheel), it’s so worth it!
Add your title to follow the path of a • Mountain range • Roller coaster • Ski slope • Bridge • Building or monument
photo tip
Rather than take a tight photo of your subject, opt for a wider shot that includes the surrounding elements to better capture your story. You can always crop the photo later if needed.
